Noob question about data setting - Desire HD General

Hi guys,
Got my HD yesterday...love it x100000. My first android so im still getting to grips with it all but what a fantastic phone.
Anyway my question is just about the data connection set up. I was just looking through the settings making sure everything is how I like it and I stumbled across this:
Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks and at the bottom there is an option which says 'Enable always-on mobile data'.
What is this and what does it mean? It says it uses more power on some mobile networks so do I turn it on or turn it off?
I have a wifi and mobile network widget on my home screen cause I like to be able to turn them on and off quickly.
If someone could just explain to me exactly what this setting is and whether I need it on or off.
Thanks a lot

This is your 3g connection. You should switch it off when you're not using it as it's a battery drainer. The always on option is good if you're waiting for a lstge ota update ir something similar and you have an unlimited data cobtract.

I see, but the thing is if I have Enable always-on data yet I have a mobile network widget on my home screen and I turn it off what is actually on?
I have sort of interpreted this always-on setting as:
If you have you mobile (3g) network turned on and have the always-on setting on, then when your phone goes into sleep mode the 3g connection is maintained and apps can still sync whilst your phone is locked/sleeping.
If you have your mobile network (3g) turned on but have the always-on setting turned off then whenever you lock your phone and it goes into sleep mode it is no longer connected to the 3g network and apps and stuff cannot sync (unless you're on wifi obviously). And as soon as you unlock the phone it will reconnect to the 3g network.
And turning the mobile network off from the widget or in settings overrides the always on setting.
Like I said this is only my interpretation of this setting...I've searched google and found almost nothing concrete about it just some opinions and I have searched through the full user manual for the desire HD and this setting has no mention.
So what do you think? Anyone else have any knowledge of this setting?

im not sure about this but i think it means that it doesnt connect, disconnect, connect again whenever you open or close the internet. its always connected, but not always active, so its faster to start up. its like leaving your wifi on all the time. theres always a connection but its not always passing data.
i leave mine always on because it doesnt eat much battery and it makes connecting over 3g much faster.

3G Problem with SGS

I am using APNdroid app for switching data connection from WIFI to 3G. However, I need to restart the phone every time to make it work.
Is this normal ? or Is there anyway we can fix it? I have searched through all the threads but didn't get much info.
Your help is much appreciated.
Not the answer to your question, but if you turn off 3G *only* when you turn on Wi-Fi, you don't have to do anything. While connected to Wi-Fi the data connection isn't on.
If you leave 3G on, Wifi (when enabled and connected) will disable 3G. Also superpower (in the app store) will turn off wifi and 3g when the screen is off. I also recommend Power Control Plus which provides a widget in which you can customize each button and toggle 3G and Wifi on the fly.
Thanks for the replies guys...To be more specific on the problem , I don't have any issue while I am on wifi its only when I switch to 3G...i tried beautiful widgets also ...looks like the problem is with phone rather than app

[REQ] app that stops DATA when being connected to Wifi

hi,
the data (3g/2g) is taking alot of my battery life..
i'm looking for someting like "setting profiles" that is running as a service and while being connected to wifi its automatically disabling the data (Data enabled)
and returning it to enabled when there is no wifi connection...
i didn't see in setting profiles option to set profile without data....
when you connect to wifi, android OS turns of the 3g data connection already.

As far as I know, Android turns off data when on wifi automatically without any additional software

Turns off, or just uses the WiFi preferentially? There's a difference, though operationally perhaps irrelevant.
My NS frequently shows BOTH the WiFi connected and the Edge signal indicator while I'm at home. Both green.

it turns it off. the 3g data session is terminated once you connect to wifi, and when you turn off wifi, the 3g data connection is re-established.
Agreed, it turns OFF the the 3g data. Notice that when you get on WiFi, that the wifi icon appears, and the 3g icon DISAPPEARS. This is because it's disabling the 3g since it has access to a wifi connection
this has been the default since as far as i've used Android

[Q] How to turn off cellular radio on N7 3G

I must be missing it somewhere, but I cannot seem to find where to turn off just the cellular radio on the N7 3G.
To save battery, I'd like to turn off the cellular radio and only use Wi-Fi when I'm at home. I can go into settings, and under Wireless and Networks I can go into Data usage and turn off mobile data there, but I still get a status bar icon with signal strength for cellular. That leads me to believe the radio is still powered on and scanning for a signal. That has to use some power.
I found I can turn on Airplane mode which turns off everything and then turn Wi-Fi back on. This seems like a really strange way to turn off the cellular radio. Every other device I've had there was a place to turn the cellular radio on and off. So then when away from home I can turn off Airplane mode and turn off Wi-Fi.
If anyone has a better way to do this, let me know.
I'm running a stock 4.2 ROM that has been rooted.
The airplane + WiFi method is the one I've always used on Androids. Are there other Androids with such an option in the standard user facing menus?
Anyway in the Testing menu (easy way to access is with the app "Phone Info") under Tablet information there is a "turn off radio" button. That seems to kill the cell signal while leaving WiFi on. Go back to the same place to turn it back on.

My HTC One X has an entry for Mobile Networks with an on/off control near the top on my settings screen. HTC also supplies widgets to toggle on and off all the radios of their phones. There is one called Mobile Network that will toggle the cellular radio.
Has anyone seen a set of widgets that I can install to toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and the Mobile Network that works with the N7 3G? To conserve battery, I prefer to turn off the ones I'm not using.
For instance, with only Wi-Fi enabled, three email accounts syncing, plus Facebook and Twitter, my battery drain is about 0.5% per hour. If I leave the cellular radio and GPS enabled, it jumps to about 1.7% per hour. These numbers are when sitting idle with the screen off. I haven't tried enabling Bluetooth and NFC to see how much they increase the drain.
I only enable the radios I need to conserve battery. I'm just looking for an easier way to do it. Currently I have to go through several steps.

Data connection turns itself off when phone is on WiFi

When I am on WiFi connection for some time, data connection will turn itself off automatically and won't turn back on when I am out of WiFi range. So if I forget to turn data on manually, my email etc won't update and I have missed important business emails that way. Anyone else have this issue and what to do? Let me add that I don't have battery saving mode turned on.
This is not a issue it's a feature, turn on switching in wifi settings so when are not in wifi range it will switch automatically to data.its called smart network switch.

I switched the suggested setting on but the problem persists.
I am pretty sure this has been going on since the latest OTA update.
Definately OTA update caused it. Fa tory reset fixed it.

Dreadful AT&T GS7 Edge Quick Setting Toggle

Alas the same fate from Galaxy S6 the dreadful no Mobile Data toggle is not there anymore, please tell me there is some sort of program that will fix this I don't want to deal with this again after kitkat and marshmallow.
I don't know of any quicker way than to drill down into the Data Usage settings (unless you want to turn off mobile voice too, in which case you can toggle Airplane Mode and then optionally toggle WiFi back on, which will also give you WiFi Calling if you have that enabled).
Just out of curiosity, why do you toggle Mobile Data so often as to benefit from a quick setting for it?
Thing is I don't like using my data when there is Wi-Fi but for some reason the data is still used while the Wi-Fi is connect, and no the Wi-Fi booster option you can use isn't on. It's quite annoying repetitively going into the connections and what not to turn it off rather than having a quick button to use in the notification dropdown.
And when I do turn it off it has that absurd mobile data turned off in the notifications it won't let me swipe it away just sits there in sure that bothers someone else. I have tried to make it go away but nothing works. Other than that I just would like to know why there isn't a mobile data toggle

I can see how a mobile-data toggle would be a useful workaround for that problem. But have you tried to fix the problem itself? Has it occurred on more than one WiFi network? When you turn off mobile data and use WiFi, does the Internet connection ever drop out?

Yes it has, no the internet connection doesn't drop out at all, I don't know what's going on but yes a mobile data toggle would be great I just don't see why AT&T supposedly removed it.
If you could get your data bug fixed, there wouldn't be much need for the toggle. Is it any app in particular that's using mobile data despite having a WiFi connection to the Internet? Or does everything on your phone do that?
Everything on the phone, and yes a mobile data toggle would still be required whether it's fixed or not, as I said having to repetitively go into the settings to turn it on and off is quite annoying especially when I need to use it.
try using Usage Manager app to toggle data..its faster than going through settings.
May I ask what are you talking about a usage manager

It's a system app. Think it has a widget, too.
Did you happen to purchase the phone from Samsung itself?
If you use nova launcher u can add a widget thru nova actions that takes u strait to mobile data settings.
Alright thanks for the help guys I had to snoop around to find usage manager apparently it was disabled on the phone, that is much better and faster

I use this. With the edge screen you can access from anywhere.
