Hi there,
when I plug my phone into my PC, it doesn't connect anymore. It charges but I don't get any connection options on my phone and my pc doesn't see it.
Also tried resetting the phone, no luck.
Go to the settings tab and go to Menu, All settings, Connections, USB to PC and make sure that "Ask me first about USB blah blah blah..." is ticked. Also, tick whatever you want as the default USB connection type (ActiveSync, Disk Drive etc..)
Hope this helps
Activesync and "ASk me.." were already ticked. I tried changing the options and then changing them back to see if I could force it to take effect but no luck

I expienced the same problem, caused by TomTom Home. This piece of ugly written software started at boottime, preventing to use activesync (even when I choose not to be a drive). I disabled it and now it works perfect, whem I need TTH for updates I start it manually.

I don't have Tom Tom installed unfortunately!
When you choose diskdrive, is the HD2 then visible in your browser as an external drive?
No, but now I'm getting "One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned" errors
I've tried in various ports on my pc
Try reinstall either activesync or mobile device center. Try also to connect the phone to another PC or laptop and check if the phone is responding ok (eliminate the good parts)

I think I've reached the problem. Dunno why it took so long to check this - it's so obvious. My new puppy is a bit of a chewer, and there's now some exposed cable on the wire. Enough intact to charge, I guess, but no data.
Typical type b-micro, yes? Can easily get a replacement.
Hi everybody. I got this new myTouch 4G by T-Mobile, and when I connect it to my PC, nothing happens. I went into "Settings" and then into "Connect to PC" and chose every setting one by one, but nothing. My comp doesn't recognize it. There has to be a pretty easy fix for this, what is it?
P.S. It has a light on it, just as it's charging, and it is charging, but my PC doesn't see it connected.
Thanx for the help!!

Download the "USB Tethering Driver" here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/t-mobile-mytouch-4g/downloads/
While it says it's for USB tethering, it's basically just a generic driver to get Windows to recognize your phone. There's also a copy on your SD card.

Hm, what version of Windows do you have running? Is Autorun(on Windows) turned off? What happens when you pull down the tab on your phone, and hit "Mount SD card for storage" or something similiar?
EDIT: Scratch the Mount SD thing. I forget that mySense doesn't have that option like that.

This is Windows Vista, Autorun needs to pop up so I would be able to turn it off, and it never did. And there is nothing to pull down on the device. I know what you are talking about, but I don't see anything appear; only that light comes on orange. My pc doesn't even see it in my Device Manager. But the light does light up on the device just as if I connect it to a charger.

Wow, if you don't even see it in Device Manager that's beyond strange. o_o On my first phone, I connected it to my computer and it instantly recognized it. On the second device, I had to go to the link I provided to you and then guide Device Manager there for it to work.
I think someone more technical savvy will have to help you, mate. Sorry.

My PC is supposed to make a sound when there is something being connected to it, but nothing. I went thru all 3 settings in "Connect to PC"; I restarted my device after each, but nothing. My Device Manger doesn't refresh when I connect/disconnect the device. What could this be? Anybody has any ideas?? Thanx for your help!!
Out of continuing pondering on your issue, what happens if you connect your phone to a different USB port? Still nothing? Does anything at all show up as "?" or unknown on Device Manager. It might be listed as a "mass storage device" and you'll need to direct it manually to the driver location.
Racking my brain for ya!

What connection mode does your phone default to? Check under Settings -> PC Connection (IIRC, phone not in hand ATM) and make sure it's not disabled. I think there is USB Storage Device, Charge Only, or Disabled. It will set the default of how the phone acts when plugged in to a PC.
You will need to test it on another pc or with another cable if possible. That would be the best way to find out what is causing the problem.

Hi. I need to place a file on to a ROOT of my device, install and run it, NOT on a storage card. How do I get the phone's memory itself show up on my Windows Explorer not my storage card?? I want to perform unlocking steps that are given on this forum. Thank You
In the past I could enable USB debug and my USB storage would not auto mount to the computer it was connected to. Now no mater what I try with the S5 it will not allow me to disable this automount behavior, even while on the lock screen. I find this to be a HUGE issue with security anyone who can grab my phone can access all the files on it very quickly.
Has anyone figured out how to disable this?
Sorry if this has been asked already, I did search.

First you need to enable developer options by going to settings>about phone and tapping on the build number about 7 times, a pop up will come saying they are enabled. Then go there and scroll down and you should see it, about the 5th option down

Hmm, have you tried deselecting the options that pop up once you plug the USB into the computer? Should give several options of what you want it as such as installer or media, deselect both? Not by a computer ATM so I'm unaware of the detailed options.

I know how useless charging from a computer is the real intention is to stop a random person from just hooking it up via usb and downloading all my files. When I connect I intend to use storage mounted to the host PC.
Deselecting does not work by the way either MTP or PTP has to be selected and if you try to uncheck it stays checked at least that is the behavior i am seeing.

It may or may not but previous android versions allowed this behavior on stock roms. Took a bit of messing around but you could get it to stop auto-mounting, usually by enabling debug mode in developer options, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore .

I think it may be the opposite, have you unchecked USB debugging and then plugged it into a computer? I know that sounds simple and stupid, but debugging mode is made to transfer files

If the screen is locked you should not be able to see phone or SD storage. Try this.
- Unplug the phone from the PC
- Lock the screen
- Plug phone back into PC
You should see the PC recognize the device, but when you click into it, it should be empty until you unlock the phone.
If you unlock the phone while plugged in. It will remember this until unplugged and locked again.
As far as I'm concerned turning the only real way is to set Windows to stop auto play for the device. However this would have to be done on any PC it's connected to.

Dennis, you are half right. USB debugging is meant for file transferring (but on a deeper level). It is more of a dev. tool then setting for the average user. When USB Debugging is enabled Devs. use it for establishing a connection Between the Android SDK(Software Development Kit) with an Android Based Device

Hi. I have the same concern with my Android 7.
I used to own, years ago, and Android 2 device and once plugged in to a computer by USB, you needed to activate the data transfer manually on the screen, otherwise it was charge only.
I wish Android 7 would behave the same way. It is safer : you may charge your phone on any USB slot and use the phone at the same time without being worried that somebody could be downloading your files and installing a back door.
Hello, I've had the V20 for a number of months now and love the phone, but I never tested out a data connection before, only to find out that when I use both the LG cable and a Anker USB3.0 cable, my phone is not able to connect to any computer. The system prompt to select the MTP or PTP connection appears, but after making a selection and the computer seeing the phone for a split second, the connection is lost and the USB prompt appears rapidly over and over again. I even went into developer options and set MTP connection always.
I tried a reboot, battery pull and capacitor discharge, and a full system restore. No fix. The only work around I have now is a samba server or moving files with the SD card manually.
Please, if you have any ideas? Does not work in Windows and Linux.
Thank you.
Have you installed LG bridge?

Yes, USB debugging works and I'm able to use ADB with my phone and both the Windows laptop and Linux Desktop. However, neither is able to reliably connect through the typical MTP and PTP methods. I finally got MTP to limitedly work with MTP when I use the LG supplied cable and ignore the USB connection prompt in Windows and Linux. I go straight to File Explorer and access the file directory of the phone. Every time I open a folder or access a file though, the phone rapidly pops up the USB connection message over and over while the file moves.
All third party cables and USB devices are not working other than just charging. In Linux, the error message in my logs is:
usbfs: process 20678 (mtp.so) did not claim interface 0 before use
reset high-speed USB device number 101 using xhci_hcd

Yes, I cannot open folder directories, nor move files from phone to computer or visa versa.
Also. Try to not let the phone screen turn off. Change display time to 15 minutes or something.. Change back when finished. GL

dbo989, did you resolve this issue? By any chance are you running avast mobile security? I was able to transfer files both ways via USB and had the pull down USB options without ever having to add USB debugging. Then I installed AVAST and USB has become charge only... none of the widely recommended solutions above will unlock USB. I see no apparent settings in AVAST so I will call them. If no resolution then I will trash Avast

I just experienced the same problem with the USB connection constantly cycling between being plugged in and not. Windows kept alternating between the device connected and disconnected system sounds. I unplugged the USB 3.0 to USB-C cable on both ends, unkinked and straightened it, and plugged the cable back into the PC and the phone. Hasn't made another peep for the last half hour and the phone is staying in USB file transfer mode. I wiggled the cable at the phone end and still no further disconnections. Maybe I didn't connect the cable securely at the PC end the first time.
This is the first time this has happened since I started setting up the phone this week, so I don't know what to make of it. Regardless, I need to order some more USB-A to USB-C cables since this is my only one.
USB File Transfer Issue - Resolved
Hi, I had the exact same issue with the computer not seeing the phone as far as files. I was still able to use ADB, Fastboot, etc, so I figure it was not a hardware problem. Tried two different computers as well. Every time I selected "File Transfer" in the USB settings, the phone would beep, and when connected to the computer, the computer made the usual chime. The phone would not show up in explorer still.
Previously this phone had been rooted, but I wanted to bring it back to stock. I had flashed the latest KDZ file. Then using ADB and Fastboot locked the bootloader. It seems that the USB issue happened after that. Here is what finally fixed it:
Turned on developer options the usual way (tapping build number in software info) and then turned off "Allow OEM Unlock." Then I turned off developer options. Still, no luck, so I then re-flashed the latest KDZ (H91820h) again, but this time with the bootloader locked.
After everything was done, I set the phone up again, and now file transfer works perfectly.
I did not want to chance locking the bootloader while the phone was still rooted. I learned the hard way about that, and nearly bricked the phone once before. Luckily I still had factory upload saved in the LAF partition.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Turns out it was not fixed permanently

After thinking it was in fact fixed, I rebooted the phone several times, turned off, then on, and all seemed well. Until the next morning. I turned it on, and the same issue happened again. No File Transfer mode to computer. ADB still worked. After being on for a while and getting warm, all of a sudden file transfer started working again. Rebooted, and turned on and off, and it continued to work. I figure its a bad part with a thermal issue somewhere so I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. When booted up again, the same problem occurred until the phone warmed up. Weird? So I tried something completely different. I downgraded the phone to H91810p and tested again. It seemed to work fine. I put it in the freezer again, and the problem will not show itself. For whatever strange reason the problem appears to be heat related, and ONLY happens with the latest KDZ, Oreo 8.0 The only thing that I can theorize is that the SOC is bad, or there is a bad area of flash memory that is intermittent.
Does anyone have any clues? I am going to put it back in the freezer, go to work, and test again when I get home to confirm.

You have an H990 or an LS997? Also, the phone will charge, even on MTP(which is what it uses to communicate with PC), so you don't have to try to force stop it. Have you gone into device manager or ADB to verify your PC isn't reading the phone?

I've been having the same problem I couldn't change USB connection type from mtp to charging or ptp etc...what I found is if I try to change it from the developer menu it doesn't want to work, but if I bring down the notifications shade and expand the notification for it and change it with the popup it tends to work most times...I did have one time I couldn't get it to work at all until I factory reset my phone (wiped and reflashed ROM but I'm rooted and rom'd)... Sometimes restarting both phone and PC works...I'm not sure what it is it seems to be different on every PC I hookup to ...oh and sometimes I've toggled USB debugging off then on and that helped....so without several people having the problem and all trying to collect information about types of PC and cables and other individual variables I figured its some kind of glitch or some code error somewhere that under certain circumstances makes the v20 stupid, that likely won't be fixed or solved...this is just my experience , i thought maybe one of the things that seemed to help me might help you....good luck
