so i thought i'd give vista's "windows mobile device center" a try on my vista laptop, and wasn't surprised to find that i couldn't get it to recognize my phone. i was surprised to find that the xp computer that i've been using with activesync for a long time suddenly stopped recognizing my phone as well.
up to now i've hard reset phone (dcd 3.04, 3.37 radio) and reinstalled activesync 4.5. no dice. please if anyone can help me troubleshoot this thing i'd be way grateful. why has my phone stopped communicating with my computers?
For WM 6 devices, on Vista you must upgrade to Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.
i downloaded and used 6.1 on my vista machine, but it didn't work. any other ideas? i think there may be something that changed on the phone, because now, activesync won't work either...
...bytheway, the phone will charge when plugged into either, but that's about it.

Just for ****s and giggles, have you tried the following:
1. Using a different usb port
2. Blowing the dust out of the port on the phone
3. Using the Y adapter that came with the phone in between the sync cable and the phone
First, plug into the USB, wait for the Windows new device chime, see if anything occurs in the WM Activesync.. If no Activesync connection is made (after the 'connecting' has stopped) then unplug and plug in back in another USB port. Do that at least 4 times (cycling between ports...even the same may eventually work) to see if you have a success.
Restart your PC, Soft-rest your phone and try again.
If still nothing, then don't bother plugging your phone in and then Run As An Administrator the attached batch file and then under View 'Show Hidden Devices.' You'll now see all devices that have ever been installed and retained for your OS, with the faded devices as those not currently attached/active.
Rather than the batch file you can open up a Command Promp Window with Administrator access (Start\Programs\Accessories\Right Click on Command Prompt and Run As An Administrator)
(I usually keep that batch file accessible in the root of my OS partition, just to keep it easy to clean out legacy device drivers that can cause problems.[/i])
Enter:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Uninstall
Network adapters\Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter
Portable Devices\PocketPC
Then under Programs & Settings uninstall the Windows Mobile Device Center upgrade, and then reboot your PC. Reinstal that Device Center 6.1 update and then again connect your phone with the USB. (for the XP machine you can do all of the and unistall/reboot/reinstall the ActiveSync 4.5.
(note to self or another.....these steps to be added to the Wiki for ActiveSyn issues)
well, i'm thinking that the "****s and giggles" have it. i blew into the port, plugged her in, and it connected to my xp machine, just like days of old. after about 3 minutes though, the connection dropped, and i've not been able to get it going again since. i think this rules out any software/settings problem, and looks like it's a hardware issue. i'll try cleaning it one more time a little later, and if no go, i'll have to figure a way to re-flash the stock rom (i only have a 6gb card...) and send the beast back. thanx for the input, guys (specially keystone, dang man that was one badass post with some instructions that will help someone, i'm sure.)
Do you have the Y adapter that came with the phone? The one with the audio jack and the 5 pin mini usb on one end and the 11 pin mini usb on the other? The reason I ask is because for some reason HTC decided to put an 11 pin mini usb connector on our phones, yet supply us with a data cable that's standard 5 pin mini usb. If you have it, just humor me and try it and see if it keeps the connection.
Oh and P.S....the "****s and giggles" wasn't just a shot in the dark. I've solved many activesync problems for people before using all 3.
I actually hadn't used the cord without the Y-adapter untill today. both ways yeild the same result.
Another Activesync problem
I've been on vacation the last week and while away i had to do a clear storage..anyway, my phone was fine but when i connect thru activesync i get an error code : 85010014 and my contacts list doesnt get updated...:S can anyone out there give me some advice or do i hafto start from scratch?
Also is there a way to find my contacts on my comp?

Well the hoop jumping is fun and all but I think if you uncheck the "Enabe advanced network functionality" in Start > Settings > Connection > USB to PC it may help.
Damn! That was simple. I unchecked the "Enabe advanced network functionality" box and I'm up and running! I'll save the hoops for later. Thanks!

Hi, thanks that work for me fine too
my mogul has been giving me crap with vista and xp for weeks. Nothing can solve it. I've re-flashed, downgraded, used different ports, different cables, modified the USB to PC settings.
Add this to the list of things that randomly seem to be a problem for this phone.
I had a similar situation, none of the software based suggestions fixed it. Wiggling the cord around would sometimes connect, but soon thereafter, my phone stopped charging. The USB port was the culprit, so be careful.
I'm sure everyone who was having troubles figured out solutions, just thought I'd add in my dealings with this.
I just had the phone activated today (yes I bought used) and brought it to work to sync with my work outlook, well the usb cord would charge the phone but give me nothing but errors in the way of actual data connection. I was a little bummed this afternoon thinking I bought a partially broken phone. But WHILE HAVING THE PHONE CONNECTED ( I bold because I had done this multiple times while not connected and had no results) I opened the Comm Manager and clicked on the sync button at the bottom, suddenly my computer could recognize my device and I was sync'ing like a mad man.
Very possibly a stupid thing I should have done from the start, but I don't know any better since I'm brand new to all of this. I only post in hopes of helping another bummed out soul as was myself
I an running a HTC TyTN-II 4550 phone (WinMo 6.1) on a desktop PC (WinXP).
I couldn't get Activesync 4.5 to work either, but there were obvious reasons--my version of Office 2000 isn't supported (2003 is the earliest, I think) and IE and Outlook are not set as my default mail clients (-and that's how I like it-).
I didn't really need Activesync but I did want to be able to get files on and off the phone from my desktop PC through the USB cable. When I'd connect the phone, Activesync would automatically start up and spin the little logo for a while and then say "connection couldn't be made" and then I couldn't do anything--even move files on and off the phone.
What I found works is this:
1) open the Task Manager, and kill the wcescomm.exe process.
2) navigate to the folder that Activesync is installed in, and run the file named WCESMgr.exe.
3) that will popup a window, asking if you want to sync, or cancel. Press [cancel]
4) the normal Activesync window will come up, and the choices for "Sync" and "Schedule" will be greyed out, but the "Explore" button should work.
Sometimes I can disconnect and reconnect the phone without going through steps #1-#4, but not always.
With the "Explore" window you can drag files on and off the device.
I tried dragging small Word and Excel docs on and off; both converted properly when dragged onto the phone, but only the Word file would convert again when dragged off.
The phone will access the internet through the USB when hooked up this way, also.
I have searched this forum, found some Sync issues but nothing that relates directly to my issue. If I just didn't see it, point me in the right direction please!
I have a TILT2, stock ROM, I have made some reg mods for text msg notification, Data speeds & auto rotate via G-Sensor. My phone was syncing perfectly fine for a few weeks and I have the USB to PC "Enable Faster data sync" unchecked.
I lost sync a few days ago, I rebooted phone & computer figuring that would fix it as it has in the past only to find I only get charge light, no data connection. I don't hear the bum-bum audio indication that it is connected, and the device does not show under Device Manager nor mobile device manager and my connection methods include USB & Bluetooth.
Here is the caveat, I can sync to the computer through my bluetooth on my PC and I do hear the audio tone connection. I figure a reg change affected this, but I reviewed my changes, nothing dealing with USB, and I even reverted back to a Reg backup from prior to the problem occuring - no luck. I have swapped USB cords, nothing has helped.
Does anyone know of registry setting that would disable my USB sync? Do I have a defunct device?
Assistance appreciated - Dan

Is this of any help to you?
http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index.php?page=Windows+Mobile+Device+Center+Troubleshooting
Thanks for the link - I had found this before, and it really deals with no connection at all. I ran through most of the post, nothing helped. Considering I have sync via Bluetooth, it is not firewall.
Looking at restoring my computer to sometime last week, see if an update that came through caused this.
I'll post more when I done the restore.
OK - Update. I restored my PC to prior to issue, no luck. I disabled my security suite, no luck. I have tested the phone on another PC, it acts the same. communicates via bluetooth, but only charges via USB.
I am starting to work my way through the phone registry, is there any specific setting I should be looking for?
I'm just going to throw in a suggestion here: have you tried using a different cable? Often times the cable is the bad piece of the connection, but people don't even think to switch it out with another one.
And as well as the cable, have you tried a hard reset on your phone?
same problem!
i have the same problem. went to htc and they told me sorry you have a 3rd party rom so we are not going to help you.
yes i have treid 4 other pc's and 3 difrent cables and no luck.

I had the USB port go out on my TP2. I used the SD card to flash the sock hard SPL and then used the SD card to flash the stock T-Mobile ROM. Then I sent it in for warranty exchange. I suggest that you do this and then seek help from HTC.
cool can you perhaps help wit how to do it? please?

same problem here and the problem that the battery was draining even when the phone was off. call htc and the next morning the ups was at mine house to get the phone. 7 days later the phone was back with new motherboard. a had started a tread in general of this problem
Yep, mine too. I had to send it back to HTC UK for repair after the USB socket stopped working - came back with a new mainboard.
It looks as if it's prone to failure as I'm careful with connecting and disconnecting cables and it looks as if this one is already starting to go again!
Can't fail HTC UK Repair for it's great service though...
Hi All,
Can anyone help me in getting the issue resolved that I am facing.
Few days back all of a sudden my PC stopped detecting my Phone (Samsung Vibrant). I thought it might be an issue with my PC so I tried to connect the phone storage on some other PC, but the result are still the same.
I am also not getting any pop up notification on my phone to "Mount".
I can download anything to my phone via direct internet browsing but cannot transfer or upgrade my phone via my PC.
I checked all the setting and also restored my phone to Factory Default but still the issue persist.
Pleeeeeease guys can someone pleeeeease help!!!!!!!
Sorry to say this, but seems like a hardware problem. Did you tried with a different cable? Try Different port on the PC? What happens if you plug the phone to a wall charger?
Is the phone still on warranty? You can send it back to Tmo and get a "new" one.
Try a new cable.

Yes I tried different cable and also tried different port of PC but nothing happens. Also the other functions works as normal.
The phone charges when I connect to my wallcharger or PC. I often get a messag from my PC that the harware is detected but is not properly installed.
Any clues, also I cannot send it to TMO because I am not in states right now and TMO does not works here.
will flashing the ROM work?????
This has happened to me before. What usually works is to reboot the computer and then connect your phone to it. Wait for the connection error message. Then go into ur device manager and find the "unknown" USB device. Make sure u both uninstall and delete the "unknown" device. Unplug the phone. Reboot the computer again. And once its finished booting up plug connect your phone again.
Always works for me.

This issue has been bothering me for such a long time. It started since I updated my G2 to android 5.0.1 lollipop, and I couldn't connect my phone to PC for a long time. File transfer has been so difficult as I have to upload pics and files to Google Drive then DL from computer. What's more, I don't even want to swipe my phone or reset to factory because the backup process would be so difficult without a computer! Spent lots of time searching for fix online but never found one, and I kind of gave up long ago.
Yesterday this issue popped backed into my head and I tried to look for answers online again. After hours of searching still can't find useful tips. Trust me, I've tried all the tips I found online, including change USB ports, change USB cable, use different computer, uninstall/reinstall USB drivers on computer, enable developer option's on phone, enable USB debugging, etc. Non has worked, just as before. I know this issue should be the problem of the phone instead of the computer, and luckily I crossed over a thread of a people with MIUI having somewhat similar problem, and he solved it by installing a MIUI USB app. So I searched for similar apps, and BINGO! my problem solved! So here's my solution:
I went to Google Play and search for "LG USB", and installed the first app says "USB Driver for Android":
imgur.com/x81eztb
I guess the key word is "USB driver", and other similar apps should work too.
The App is very simple. Just tap on the MTP button:
imgur.com/j7enxFn
And the long lost USB connection options reappears!!!
imgur.com/cZjO8xl
My phone is in Chinese but I think it's simple to find the corresponding app and options in English system. I think what the APP does is simply take you to the USB connection options page, which is hidden somewhere in your phone but can't be found.
I guess the problem is that when updated to Lollipop, some phones got this bug that the USB connection type selection menu somehow doesn't show up when connected to PC. While I was looking for solution online, I found that not only G2 users, but people with G3 and even non-LG phones got the same problem. For LG, I don't know what they're thinking as they even took away the "USB PC connection" option menu (as the last picture) in "Settings", making it impossible for users to manually choose connection type when this bug occurs. (I found that other brands' phones kept this option in settings->storage)
Any way, just happy to solve a problem bothered me for over a year and want to share my solution. Wish this post will help people who got the same problem as I did.
PS. It says I can't post links, so I can't post the screen shots' full links. But I guess this solution is not hard to understand even without pics.
Thanks for the solution but in my case - after installation - menu USB PC connection appears but unfortunately disappears in a sec.
Is like someone push the back button .
Probably there is a software who creates the problem but i do not know how to find it in order to close it or uninstall it.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance.
Hello, I've had the V20 for a number of months now and love the phone, but I never tested out a data connection before, only to find out that when I use both the LG cable and a Anker USB3.0 cable, my phone is not able to connect to any computer. The system prompt to select the MTP or PTP connection appears, but after making a selection and the computer seeing the phone for a split second, the connection is lost and the USB prompt appears rapidly over and over again. I even went into developer options and set MTP connection always.
I tried a reboot, battery pull and capacitor discharge, and a full system restore. No fix. The only work around I have now is a samba server or moving files with the SD card manually.
Please, if you have any ideas? Does not work in Windows and Linux.
Thank you.
Have you installed LG bridge?

Did you enable USB debugging in Developer options? If no, enable it.
Change the power settings in windows for the USB.
Power options
Advanced settings
Disable "USB selective suspend setting"
Tried all the above

Yes, USB debugging works and I'm able to use ADB with my phone and both the Windows laptop and Linux Desktop. However, neither is able to reliably connect through the typical MTP and PTP methods. I finally got MTP to limitedly work with MTP when I use the LG supplied cable and ignore the USB connection prompt in Windows and Linux. I go straight to File Explorer and access the file directory of the phone. Every time I open a folder or access a file though, the phone rapidly pops up the USB connection message over and over while the file moves.
All third party cables and USB devices are not working other than just charging. In Linux, the error message in my logs is:
usbfs: process 20678 (mtp.so) did not claim interface 0 before use
reset high-speed USB device number 101 using xhci_hcd

Is this behaviour on accessing and copying? You can not copy a file from your Windows laptop to the phone?
Yes, I cannot open folder directories, nor move files from phone to computer or visa versa.
Also. Try to not let the phone screen turn off. Change display time to 15 minutes or something.. Change back when finished. GL

dbo989, did you resolve this issue? By any chance are you running avast mobile security? I was able to transfer files both ways via USB and had the pull down USB options without ever having to add USB debugging. Then I installed AVAST and USB has become charge only... none of the widely recommended solutions above will unlock USB. I see no apparent settings in AVAST so I will call them. If no resolution then I will trash Avast

No, I never could resolve it. I ended up using Samba to fileshare with home computer, but lost any OTG cable ability. Never used antivirus or security software with my phone.

Just fixed it... turned out to be the port on my PC, I switched ports and its back as it was, no need to enable dev mode or USB debug... its still slow connection... I have to look up Samba solution, never used it.
Thanks for sharing
I just experienced the same problem with the USB connection constantly cycling between being plugged in and not. Windows kept alternating between the device connected and disconnected system sounds. I unplugged the USB 3.0 to USB-C cable on both ends, unkinked and straightened it, and plugged the cable back into the PC and the phone. Hasn't made another peep for the last half hour and the phone is staying in USB file transfer mode. I wiggled the cable at the phone end and still no further disconnections. Maybe I didn't connect the cable securely at the PC end the first time.
This is the first time this has happened since I started setting up the phone this week, so I don't know what to make of it. Regardless, I need to order some more USB-A to USB-C cables since this is my only one.
USB File Transfer Issue - Resolved
Hi, I had the exact same issue with the computer not seeing the phone as far as files. I was still able to use ADB, Fastboot, etc, so I figure it was not a hardware problem. Tried two different computers as well. Every time I selected "File Transfer" in the USB settings, the phone would beep, and when connected to the computer, the computer made the usual chime. The phone would not show up in explorer still.
Previously this phone had been rooted, but I wanted to bring it back to stock. I had flashed the latest KDZ file. Then using ADB and Fastboot locked the bootloader. It seems that the USB issue happened after that. Here is what finally fixed it:
Turned on developer options the usual way (tapping build number in software info) and then turned off "Allow OEM Unlock." Then I turned off developer options. Still, no luck, so I then re-flashed the latest KDZ (H91820h) again, but this time with the bootloader locked.
After everything was done, I set the phone up again, and now file transfer works perfectly.
I did not want to chance locking the bootloader while the phone was still rooted. I learned the hard way about that, and nearly bricked the phone once before. Luckily I still had factory upload saved in the LAF partition.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Turns out it was not fixed permanently

After thinking it was in fact fixed, I rebooted the phone several times, turned off, then on, and all seemed well. Until the next morning. I turned it on, and the same issue happened again. No File Transfer mode to computer. ADB still worked. After being on for a while and getting warm, all of a sudden file transfer started working again. Rebooted, and turned on and off, and it continued to work. I figure its a bad part with a thermal issue somewhere so I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. When booted up again, the same problem occurred until the phone warmed up. Weird? So I tried something completely different. I downgraded the phone to H91810p and tested again. It seemed to work fine. I put it in the freezer again, and the problem will not show itself. For whatever strange reason the problem appears to be heat related, and ONLY happens with the latest KDZ, Oreo 8.0 The only thing that I can theorize is that the SOC is bad, or there is a bad area of flash memory that is intermittent.
Does anyone have any clues? I am going to put it back in the freezer, go to work, and test again when I get home to confirm.
