How do you disable USB automount? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the past I could enable USB debug and my USB storage would not auto mount to the computer it was connected to. Now no mater what I try with the S5 it will not allow me to disable this automount behavior, even while on the lock screen. I find this to be a HUGE issue with security anyone who can grab my phone can access all the files on it very quickly.
Has anyone figured out how to disable this?
Sorry if this has been asked already, I did search.

First you need to enable developer options by going to settings>about phone and tapping on the build number about 7 times, a pop up will come saying they are enabled. Then go there and scroll down and you should see it, about the 5th option down

I think you mis-understood my question, automount of usb is still occurring with debug mode enabled. Nothing I do will disable it and it happens even on the lock screen. I have already enabled developer options, was already familiar with the press 7 times option....although many are not!

Hmm, have you tried deselecting the options that pop up once you plug the USB into the computer? Should give several options of what you want it as such as installer or media, deselect both? Not by a computer ATM so I'm unaware of the detailed options.

He's trying to find the function for attaching that says "Charge only" for attaching it via USB to computer/phone.

I know how useless charging from a computer is the real intention is to stop a random person from just hooking it up via usb and downloading all my files. When I connect I intend to use storage mounted to the host PC.
Deselecting does not work by the way either MTP or PTP has to be selected and if you try to uncheck it stays checked at least that is the behavior i am seeing.

What was the last device you owned that allowed you to charge only? I don't remember my S4 having a charge only option, although I never feared someone would hook it up to a computer and steal files.

Cyanogenmod Modded Note II was not charge only, just had the ability to not auto select mount options from the storage menu you could simply uncheck both. Cant seem to do that with S5 stock rom.

It may or may not but previous android versions allowed this behavior on stock roms. Took a bit of messing around but you could get it to stop auto-mounting, usually by enabling debug mode in developer options, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore .

I think it may be the opposite, have you unchecked USB debugging and then plugged it into a computer? I know that sounds simple and stupid, but debugging mode is made to transfer files

If the screen is locked you should not be able to see phone or SD storage. Try this.
- Unplug the phone from the PC
- Lock the screen
- Plug phone back into PC
You should see the PC recognize the device, but when you click into it, it should be empty until you unlock the phone.
If you unlock the phone while plugged in. It will remember this until unplugged and locked again.
As far as I'm concerned turning the only real way is to set Windows to stop auto play for the device. However this would have to be done on any PC it's connected to.

Dennis, you are half right. USB debugging is meant for file transferring (but on a deeper level). It is more of a dev. tool then setting for the average user. When USB Debugging is enabled Devs. use it for establishing a connection Between the Android SDK(Software Development Kit) with an Android Based Device

Hi. I have the same concern with my Android 7.
I used to own, years ago, and Android 2 device and once plugged in to a computer by USB, you needed to activate the data transfer manually on the screen, otherwise it was charge only.
I wish Android 7 would behave the same way. It is safer : you may charge your phone on any USB slot and use the phone at the same time without being worried that somebody could be downloading your files and installing a back door.

Possible JI6 OTA bug, no USB mass storage option?

Looks like a bug to me, Suddenly I do not see the "USB connected" message on the notification bar! I have to disconnect USB and change mode from mass storage to something else and then change it back then connect USB and it shows the USB connected message with mount option.
Never had this problem with any previous builds. Also, I see the accurate battery mod shows "plug" sign while USB is connected but no "USB connected" message or mount option!
Any comments people...anyone with this problem on JI5 leak?
Simple question first. Did you leave de-bugging enabled? I updated my device thru Kies (one of the lucky ones it seems) instead of flashing Eugene's or the Odin mount and I haven't had that problem. I think I saw someone in the orginal JI5 on Kies thead mentioned this too. I tried to replicate their bug but my seems to 100% good. What's your OS?
its a bug, with mine is seems to come and go

Thanks for the reply. I flashed it through ODIN on Windows 7. Also, USB debugging was never enabled in the process. It seems like a bug because it comes and goes, randomly. Maybe this was one reason Tmobile told us not to upgrade...

Good to hear I am not alone with this problem...thanks for the reply...
hopefully we'll find a workaround...
Just wanted to note here, flashed to stock, formatted internal sd card, upgraded to leaked JI6 and the bug still exists, hopefully OTA JI6 fixes this
Tried OTA, erased everything, flashed from scratch still the same issue...hopefully someone has a solution, if not then this adds another reason for Froyo update
That's wierd. I upgraded to OTA and problem went away for me.

It's not really a bug. There is an option under Settings > Applications > USB Settings. Mine wasn't showing up either so I swithed it to "Ask on connection" then plugged the USB back in and that worked. Then I switched it back to "Mass storage" and now it immediately gets ready to mount. I guess you just have to set it that first time.
Its a bug with leaked JI6. This thread started with leaked JI6... Think he recently changed headline. And you solution was temporary fix with leaked version problem would come back. Can't comment about OTA since the problem went away with mine
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Ok, Well I can let you know that it doesn't come back with OTA. You should flash JI6 The other builds are buggy.
wow, for those who went all the way to reformatting internal sd because of this im sorry.
all you have to do is go to settings> app settings> usb settings> and change to ask on connection
thats it, i would not really call it a bug
oh yea, and thats with JI6

THIS solves it. Just did that and everything is back to normal. With that out of the way, this JI6 software is close to perfect (the RFS file system thing is the imperfect part). This is the software this phone should've launched with. Now if they can just go to a proper file system in their 2.2 update, Sammy will have a beast of a phone.
Thanks for the replies guys. I have set the default USB to "mass storage" instead of "ask on connection" as I don't want to make a selection each time.
Now, when I connect the phone I see USB connected and sometimes there is a USB connected message in status bar with no mount option and sometimes there is no USB connected message at all... now sure what's going on. I've been seeing this problem since JI5.
I've also read some threads about this in QnA forum..thanks...

Just for the heck of it, if you haven't tried already. Check off debug mode. Because when you plug in usb debug mode pops up and maybe usb will also every time
Thanks for the reply... Yes I now I leave the USB debugging to always enabled. This is the only way the USB mass storage option is always presented on USB connect.
Hopefully Froyo fixes this as I've seen some other people having the issue as well...
I have never seen this issue on JI6. It always pops up "USB Connected: Select to copy files to/fom your computer" in the status when I plug in the USB cable. It's never failed, even when I had USB Debugging off.

Just FYI, I was having this problem when I flashed the JI6 update via ODIN. Mounting would only work when I had usb debug mode on. However, I disabled USB debug mode and then went to
Settings -> Application Settings -> USB Settings
I then changed it from mass storage to ask on connection and then back to mass storage and it gives me the option to mount in status bar just fine when I connect it to the computer via usb.
HTH.
I noticed that after the update i don't get updates ffrom the market place anymore?
Anyone experience the same thing?
Are you using the auto update? I'm not sure it tells you if this is on.
When I connected to my mac (debbuging has to be left on) I get a menu to either connect to kies, mass storage and one other.

[Q] Connecting to a PC

Hi everybody. I got this new myTouch 4G by T-Mobile, and when I connect it to my PC, nothing happens. I went into "Settings" and then into "Connect to PC" and chose every setting one by one, but nothing. My comp doesn't recognize it. There has to be a pretty easy fix for this, what is it?
P.S. It has a light on it, just as it's charging, and it is charging, but my PC doesn't see it connected.
Thanx for the help!!

Download the "USB Tethering Driver" here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/t-mobile-mytouch-4g/downloads/
While it says it's for USB tethering, it's basically just a generic driver to get Windows to recognize your phone. There's also a copy on your SD card.

This is Windows Vista, Autorun needs to pop up so I would be able to turn it off, and it never did. And there is nothing to pull down on the device. I know what you are talking about, but I don't see anything appear; only that light comes on orange. My pc doesn't even see it in my Device Manager. But the light does light up on the device just as if I connect it to a charger.

Out of continuing pondering on your issue, what happens if you connect your phone to a different USB port? Still nothing? Does anything at all show up as "?" or unknown on Device Manager. It might be listed as a "mass storage device" and you'll need to direct it manually to the driver location.

What connection mode does your phone default to? Check under Settings -> PC Connection (IIRC, phone not in hand ATM) and make sure it's not disabled. I think there is USB Storage Device, Charge Only, or Disabled. It will set the default of how the phone acts when plugged in to a PC.
You will need to test it on another pc or with another cable if possible. That would be the best way to find out what is causing the problem.

MPT connection once again

I already asked this but couldn't get a proper answer. I don't get this screen anymore when I attach GT 10.1 to any USB. I am going to root my tab, and I want to know if this is normal. To better explain myself this time I am attaching a picture of my SGS2 on USB connection. This is what I am not seeing anymore on my tab.

Is USB Debugging on? This may be the cause.
Thanx but no. It is off and I can sync with KIES or see my tablet in windows explorer. I can say that I prefer this. I don't need USB debugging anymore. I can do anything with my tab, still connected to USB and dont need to press home button to return to tab. As though KIES mode is disabled and still active. I wonder if this is an abnormality. I am scared to root my tab.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
C'mon guys. No one here in the same boat? Just care to answer. I just rooted my tab fine, but this issue is really occupying my mind. It seems that my tab is stuck at debugging mode. When I check debug, my tab disapears from windows explorer. Nothing, nada! When I uncheck debug, it is there again as a phone icon. Titanium backup tells me to put debug on, and after I check it, it still tells me to check it.... but does the backup fine. I am really confused here. Please... someone...explain. Otherwise my wife will put me in a white jacket with arms tied. You know what I mean.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
Thats for sure, I have no PC connection when in debugging mode. Is that normal? There is no option to mount the TAB. Only an icon, bottom right, shows debugging mode and when touched it gives you the option to quit debugging mode.... and I am really surprised no one has any idea. Where are the gurus?
I'm confused, what was the question again? You answered yourself so many times, that I'll address only the last question.
Even when debugging is on you have an USB connection. You can access your Tab through ADB but MTP won't work. And since there is no USB mass storage mode you can't access /sdcard via Win Explorer while debugging is active.
Have I answered myself? How my ignorance can answer itself? If someone told me, "There is nothing wrong with your tab" I would have been relieved. Just tell me this: With which update have I lost the MPT screen? (See the attached pic.) And secondly, when in debugging mode, shouldn't I see my device in windows explorer? I used to see it, and I still see my SGS2 when debug on. Thanx for answering BTW.

USB MTP/PTP Connection Problems to any computer.

Hello, I've had the V20 for a number of months now and love the phone, but I never tested out a data connection before, only to find out that when I use both the LG cable and a Anker USB3.0 cable, my phone is not able to connect to any computer. The system prompt to select the MTP or PTP connection appears, but after making a selection and the computer seeing the phone for a split second, the connection is lost and the USB prompt appears rapidly over and over again. I even went into developer options and set MTP connection always.
I tried a reboot, battery pull and capacitor discharge, and a full system restore. No fix. The only work around I have now is a samba server or moving files with the SD card manually.
Please, if you have any ideas? Does not work in Windows and Linux.
Thank you.
Have you installed LG bridge?

Yes, USB debugging works and I'm able to use ADB with my phone and both the Windows laptop and Linux Desktop. However, neither is able to reliably connect through the typical MTP and PTP methods. I finally got MTP to limitedly work with MTP when I use the LG supplied cable and ignore the USB connection prompt in Windows and Linux. I go straight to File Explorer and access the file directory of the phone. Every time I open a folder or access a file though, the phone rapidly pops up the USB connection message over and over while the file moves.
All third party cables and USB devices are not working other than just charging. In Linux, the error message in my logs is:
usbfs: process 20678 (mtp.so) did not claim interface 0 before use
reset high-speed USB device number 101 using xhci_hcd

dbo989, did you resolve this issue? By any chance are you running avast mobile security? I was able to transfer files both ways via USB and had the pull down USB options without ever having to add USB debugging. Then I installed AVAST and USB has become charge only... none of the widely recommended solutions above will unlock USB. I see no apparent settings in AVAST so I will call them. If no resolution then I will trash Avast

No, I never could resolve it. I ended up using Samba to fileshare with home computer, but lost any OTG cable ability. Never used antivirus or security software with my phone.

Just fixed it... turned out to be the port on my PC, I switched ports and its back as it was, no need to enable dev mode or USB debug... its still slow connection... I have to look up Samba solution, never used it.
Thanks for sharing
I just experienced the same problem with the USB connection constantly cycling between being plugged in and not. Windows kept alternating between the device connected and disconnected system sounds. I unplugged the USB 3.0 to USB-C cable on both ends, unkinked and straightened it, and plugged the cable back into the PC and the phone. Hasn't made another peep for the last half hour and the phone is staying in USB file transfer mode. I wiggled the cable at the phone end and still no further disconnections. Maybe I didn't connect the cable securely at the PC end the first time.
This is the first time this has happened since I started setting up the phone this week, so I don't know what to make of it. Regardless, I need to order some more USB-A to USB-C cables since this is my only one.
USB File Transfer Issue - Resolved
Hi, I had the exact same issue with the computer not seeing the phone as far as files. I was still able to use ADB, Fastboot, etc, so I figure it was not a hardware problem. Tried two different computers as well. Every time I selected "File Transfer" in the USB settings, the phone would beep, and when connected to the computer, the computer made the usual chime. The phone would not show up in explorer still.
Previously this phone had been rooted, but I wanted to bring it back to stock. I had flashed the latest KDZ file. Then using ADB and Fastboot locked the bootloader. It seems that the USB issue happened after that. Here is what finally fixed it:
Turned on developer options the usual way (tapping build number in software info) and then turned off "Allow OEM Unlock." Then I turned off developer options. Still, no luck, so I then re-flashed the latest KDZ (H91820h) again, but this time with the bootloader locked.
After everything was done, I set the phone up again, and now file transfer works perfectly.
I did not want to chance locking the bootloader while the phone was still rooted. I learned the hard way about that, and nearly bricked the phone once before. Luckily I still had factory upload saved in the LAF partition.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Turns out it was not fixed permanently

After thinking it was in fact fixed, I rebooted the phone several times, turned off, then on, and all seemed well. Until the next morning. I turned it on, and the same issue happened again. No File Transfer mode to computer. ADB still worked. After being on for a while and getting warm, all of a sudden file transfer started working again. Rebooted, and turned on and off, and it continued to work. I figure its a bad part with a thermal issue somewhere so I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. When booted up again, the same problem occurred until the phone warmed up. Weird? So I tried something completely different. I downgraded the phone to H91810p and tested again. It seemed to work fine. I put it in the freezer again, and the problem will not show itself. For whatever strange reason the problem appears to be heat related, and ONLY happens with the latest KDZ, Oreo 8.0 The only thing that I can theorize is that the SOC is bad, or there is a bad area of flash memory that is intermittent.
Does anyone have any clues? I am going to put it back in the freezer, go to work, and test again when I get home to confirm.

I need HELP, Samsung, Adb and a broken screen

Hello,
I'm trying to reach out here because I've been looking this up for the longest time and can't seem to find a solution ,
I have a Samsung galaxy S7 edge G935F, about a week ago the phone fell from 3rd floor and the screen is broken, it's still working and I see that the screen is still responsive but when I try to put in the pattern lock for some reason it doesn't work,
It was working just fine for the past couple of days but what I forgot is that I had the automatic reboot option enabled,
two days ago the phone reboots and I can't use my fingerprint, because after the reboot you need to enter the pattern before being able to use the fingerprint option,
my question is, can I get access to my phone still? I did recover some photos and videos but I wanna use the phone on pc using an app like Vysor,
I tried ADB but it doesn't recognize the phone when I do 'adb devices', even tho when I connect it on pc it shows up but it's empty when I open it, normally it would show the files and everything if I unlock it,
I wanna know if there's any way to install the app so I can control it on pc, I tried the official samsung sidesync app but again it needs to be on the phone too to work, can you please assist me in this, it's very important for me and I need some contacts ASAP
thank you :c

If you did not have USB debugging enabled in developer options, adb isn't going to work, you have to get it enabled first.
The fact that you can connect and see the storage doesn't mean anything, that only requires USB MTP connection, not adb functionality. They are two different kinds of connections requiring different drivers.
If you can get USB debugging enabled, then you have more than one option to get connected to recover your data and probably even remove the pattern/fingerprint.
