OTA - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will the Nexus 7 get any more OTA from Google? I read that google only updates devices for 18 month and no longer. I don't know how long ago they released nexus 7. I hope CM and others will keep bringing updates that google will no longer bring to us. it'll be a while before i can upgrade to the newer device. I'm trying to wait for the updated nexus 10 if it will ever be released.

Nexus devices always have up to date custom roms....long after official updates end.

[Nexus 10 Support EOL?] Is 4.4.3 the last Nexus 10 update?

Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 were released Nov 2012. We're nearing the 2 year End Of Official Support for Nexus devices. If a newer than 4.4.3 OS is announced at this year's I/O would it be available for official release on the 10 before November? Last year A LOT of people were VERY upset that the Galaxy Nexus wasn't getting Kit Kat 4.4.

The official life cycle for Nexus devices is actually 18 months, not 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get the next major update (4.5?) on our N10. That being said, 4.4.3 with Xposed Framework is so smooth on this thing that it wouldn't be that big of a deal for me personally. However, I'm sure even if it isn't officially supported, there will be a good AOSP ROM to flash to update if you're feeling burned. That's the beauty of owning a Nexus device. The dev support on these things is unparalleled.
Regarding the Galaxy Nexus, I believe it not receiving Kit Kat was more due to the fact that Texas Instruments had bowed out of the mobile game, so it was impossible to "officially" support. I have since then ditched Verizon and their faux Galaxy Nexus, and picked up a Nexus 5 on T-Mobile. That being said, I am currently using said GNex as a glorified WiFi media device, and it is running the latest Android version (4.4.3) by way of ShinyROM, which is a great AOSP ROM that, if you didn't know any better, was nothing more than stock. This goes back to the fact that it's a Nexus device. Anything is possible. :good:

About Android 6.0 Previews

Our devices will not get Android M. Everyone's saying it.
So what is this? Why google worked on these devices for Android 6.0?

On October 15, 2014, Google officially announced that Android L would be known as Android 5.0 "Lollipop". The company also unveiled launch devices for Android 5.0—including Motorola's Nexus 6 and HTC's Nexus 9—for release on November 3, 2014. Google stated that Nexus (including the Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10) and Google Play edition devices would receive updates to Lollipop "in the coming weeks"; one more developer preview build for Nexus devices and the new SDK revision for application developers would be released on October 17, 2014. Update schedules for third-party Android devices may vary by manufacturer.

Maybe we need to wait a little bit.

Probably to give the dev's something to work with rather than officially supporting it, someone will get it booting and that's probably what they're hoping for.

I never thought about this... If this is true, it will probably go down as one of the greatest strokes of genius to happen at Google in regards to the Nexus program. Capitalizing on the unlocked bootloader, and throwing devs a bone without taking the time and resources to support them officially. Those who really want it get Marshmallow, and everybody's happy.
Great....now I don't need to upgrade to Pixel C.

How long will be the nexus 6p supported?

Hi,
I want to buy the nexus 6p, but I want to know how long the nexus 6p will be supported by Google?(updates)
I do believe it's 24 months from the release date. N5 has had its last update ever (to Marshmallow) as it's now a 2-year old phone and they aren't going to update it anymore. So you will see two more major updates to your phone (Android N and O) before Google cuts support on it.
Nexus 5 is still being updated! Google hasn't said anything about Android N yet, but the Nexus 5 is on Android 6.0.1 and receiving security updates still

Yep, you're right - it's at least two years from device's release;
Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus 10 devices get the latest version of Android directly from Google. These devices will receive Android version updates for at least two years from when the device first became available on the Google Store.

A minimum of 2 years. Nexus 4 had 3 years (after that it still had a few monthly security patches), Nexus 5 had 2 years and counting.
No need to worry about losing official support, custom ROMs are always there to cover you for 1~2 more years.

At least 2 years, but probably a few more as well....
Isee,
It will get Android N and O for sure. Beyond O it's up to Google if it will get more. As for N and Nexus 5 it's likely it won't get it but Google may not pull the plug for N5 yet. Even if they do who cares there are tons of custom roms. Only a dead battery can stop a Nexus from getting updates now.
Bump

No more security updates

Well, that's it guys & girls.
I bought this tablet new 6 days ago and today the big G issued their September security update, and there's no love for the N7 2013 :/
I wasn't expecting Nougat but their site did say updates until July next year I think. Oh well. It's still a great device.
I assume it's not possible/too much work for someone to take on creating security otas from other devices?
Wait a few days. They've supported everything else through the guaranteed time for them thus far. (Maybe they are going to surprise us and throw Nouget at us......I doubt it, but it was dead simple to port and mostly works)
^No if they stick to what they say we are done: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en
We are obviously over 3 years since release and are also over 18 months since it was removed from the store.
Going by that link we were lucky to get M as that was over 2 years.
Honestly it doesn't matter to me that Google stopped supporting the 2013 Nexus 7, even though it's three years old it still performs extremely well for it's aged hardware. I'd love to know whether or not the rumored 2016 Pixel tablet is an actual thing...
I see factory images for other devices containing the september 6 2016 security patches but not for the nexus 7 2013. So it looks like I will have to migrate to another rom in order to have my device secure.

But they won't work for this device if they're for another device, right?
I wonder how difficult it would be to create N7 patches from patches released for, say, N6 etc?

Don't worry, nobody is going to hack your lousy 90$ tablet.

I am assuming that other nexus 7 2013 roms (AOSP/Cyanogenmod/etc) do incorporate the latest security patches. It is just google that has stopped creating and pushing images to our devices.

Future updates for Nexus 6P

I am thinking of buying the nexus 6p in the upcoming flipkart sale. If I remember correctly, it was released with Android M. Now it has got N. Google has promised 2 new versions to each phone. So will the 6p get Android O whenever it releases?
I know Pixels are around the corner but I am quite sure that I won't be able to afford it right now.

Here is the EOL of the Nexus products.

Looks like "September 2017" for the 6P. But there will be lots of custom ROMs after the EOL. I love my Nexus and will not be upgrading to a new phone for years.
Yes we should get Android O if that is your question.

That is what I love and hate about Android phones. It's almost as if Google is bullying you into buying a new phone every 2 years. The hardware is more than capable of running newer Android versions unless future releases are 10 years ahead of the hardware, which I doubt will ever be the case in our lifetime. Google should really think about those of us who don't wanna buy a new phone every 2 years. I'm generally speaking from those people who do not root to get custom builds.
