Friends.
Android V5 is near launch in a month or two. So then Android V4 will be old.
Same samsung will launch new S4 with few more months waiting.
Update for s3 then will take even more time to come.
This procedure is going on & on with many bloatwares given by Samsung & also by other companies.
I love samsung phones & Use their phone, But support or poor support is biggest hurdel in buying s3 this time.
I am in serious confusion seeing future of S3.
It will get the update.
SGS got its update, SGS2 got its update, SGS3 will get its update.
Updates DO matter but the update plan for android 4 has been a disaster for ALL manufacturers except LG which we shouldn't even talk about as LG is the biggest joke on the android front. Even the nexus line is a failure. I almost got the nexus S a year ago just because of the whole dedicated concept but now I'm glad I didn't. I don't even think the nexus S will get android 5.
Samsung and HTC are those that I feel is the least slow with updates but still none of them will update their first flagships (SGS1 and DHD) even if they without a doubt can run vanilla ICS great. I thought Sony Ericsson learnt their lesson but apparently not as their flagship this year runs GB and that is laughable.
The only "comfort" in all this is that it's the same for all brands.

This cycle will repeat every year. If you want fast updates get nexus or you can flash roms on the sgs3 to get latest software. If you want latest hardware keep changing phones.
Also what support you are referring to? Why do you need support from useless samsung or any other manufacturer in that matter? XDA is your best support forum and you need manufacturer support only in case of hardware defect and need a warranty replacement or repair

Exactly. If you are confused, then get a nexus so you won't be. Also, who says we are going to Android 5, what about 4.1? Lets not overhype please.

Rumor has it Samsung, HTC, etc have early access to Jellybean in order to make their Nexii. Previously everyone besides Samsung only had access when it was released.
Whether or not this affects the update schedule remains to be seen. If it doesn't, you can either expect early-mid 2013 for the update, or flash it yourself (no company, not even some ideal hypothetical, can compete with homebrew speed).

What are you basing any of this on? I highly doubt we will see Android 5 this soon (unless it is purely a tablet OS, which I doubt).
Based on your logic, there is no point in buying an Android phone.

Android 5 or 4.1 will more then likely come in December just like ics and gingerbread before that. If this is true, this gives you 5 to 6 more months with ics and I doubt the s3 will be as old as you are thinking; sure better devices can come to the market in the next 6 months but let's be real, the s3 will be able to do everything for the next year to a year and a half just fine. I've been with the HTC inspire and this thing is 2 years old yet I rarely have any lag considering I use this for everything including gaming.

Have perfect solution for u, don't by the SGS 3 and keep waiting for the perfect one, I have a Gnex and very much doubt that it will have Jelly Bean in a month or two or three , maybe more like 5 months and in the smartphone age that is like a year. Or go get a phone named after a fruit. See no one will get Jelly Bean before it makes it's debut on the next Gnex and thats just the way the cookie crumbles. Thank the fruity company for making the latest version the "best " one, at least with Samsung you get more from the next version then just S voice as they did with the 4S and a bit more power.
If you rooted, you won't bother whether Samsung update on time or not because you have everything the best XDA can offer you. If you are not rooted, obviously you are not software geek, why bother whether your GS3 running ICS, Jellybean, Gingerbread or any other version? Everything is a big problem to human if he or she want to think that way.

having a nexus phone doesn't guarantee you getting updates in the future. look at N1. and NS got it's first update pulled fast and then it took several months before a new ICS update came. That's why I don't care about the nexus line. And I think that the SGS3 will be a phone that feels fresh longer than any phone before, even with android 4.
ye, even i was thinking about that problem but then i just thought that if android 5 comes out then i will use the customised rom
Custom rom/buy new phone.
Ive had enough of waiting for retarded companies to update things.
Motorola milestone - 6 months late, not fully functional (GB)
LG optimus 3d - not available till september 2012 (at the earliest), sold with the promise of prompt ics update, instead waiting more than a whole year.
Never waiting for an update again. Just gonna buy the new phones.

They messed up on the Dec update and probably had to redo. Unfortunately, company bureaucracy works much more slowly than we do, and a new update cycle can take 3-5 months. This is true for any company that offers warranties - they have to break as little as they can.
Had they not messed it up, however, NS could have had its upgrade hella quickly.
Don't want to deal with company bureaucracy? Flash homebrew (NS certainly had them much, much more quickly). Otherwise there's still no better option.
s3 will get official JB update and may be cm11 or cm12 for the other version of androids

No pessimism allowed... indeed... and AGREED!
Of course there's going to be a version of KLP for the Nexus 7!
Seems to me to be inevitable.
Not a case of 'if', but 'when' ... which of course, is the metaphorical Six Million Dollar Question.
So, I would recommend people just enjoy whatever ROM/Kernel configuration they currently have installed on this terrific little device... and instead of attempting to gainsay the future... let the future take care of itself - (it usually does, you know).
And when KLP eventually shows up for the N7, (as I'm sure it will, at some point)... we'll enjoy it all the more.
(And this is from a cynical, hardcore pessimist).
Rgrds,
Ged.
i am only basing this on gut instinct but i have a feeling our beloved nexus 7 might not get 5.0

I do believe we will get the Android 5.0. First of all, this is a nexus device, google's flagship line of devices. Second, nexus devices will get the latest updates FIRST before any other carriers. And Third, I think that the Nexus 7 has the capacity to run the KLP( I mean its still quad core right?).
Nexus 7 will deffo get KLP.
This is a samsung specific report, they are the devices in samsungs line that will recieve it.
Google isn't going to make KLP and not put it on their own devices.

You obviously don't understand the reason of buying a Nexus device. You buy a Nexus device not because of specs but because it runs pure Android and gets updated and supported straight from Google for years to come.
It is one of the sole reasons for owning a Nexus. If Kit-Kat were not to come to the N4 it would ruin everything that the Nexus line stood for.

No, only for Nexus S.
Logic says that KitKat will be first seen on Nexus 5 on release date, and after that we, nexus 4 owners, will receive it too.
Google would definitely want to show off KK on its new device first. Thats my guess.

What was the reasoning for those statements by those 10 places? Bring a few examples, I want to see how they came up with that. I have heard the opposite, that kitkat will be built so that older and weaker devices could run it also, which is based on one sentence "It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody." - doesnt sound like "its our goal to make it exclusive for the next nexus".

Hmm ... Not sure if Andoid M classifes as a update or as patch . IMHO its both ,since 5.1 is sluggish and tad buggy .
No updates would be bad and it sucks . One might think why invest in a expensive Nexus device when updates are so short lived . Apple fanboys might have some thing to brag about .
I'm not very concerned. Even if Google doesn't give us the update, it probably won't be very long before CyanogenMod comes out with it. I'm willing to bet that this tablet continues to get community support for another couple of years.
Without a CM Flo or deb device maintainer I doubt CM based on Android M would appear officially for us. Maybe other ROMs that have flo maintainers/devs will bring Android M to our devices after making 5.1.1 Lollipop binaries and stuff compatible with M

The only thing keeping me on Android is the ability to root, secure my devices, and retain full control of the file system - you know, administer the device. This is slowly being taken away, and when it does, I will probably jump ship. Apple makes quality hardware, and iOS isn't awful. It just doesn't give you any easy methods to truly administer the device without jumping through hoops.
In a world where you are a guest on your own device regardless of OS, Apple will come out the winner.

Besides the point you mentioned , Android does have other benefits ... But I was talking more in terms of Nexus devices . If high end devices & Nexus devices (from the google stable) dont get updates for longer , it would be crappy .No point investing in an expensive Nexus device..
If they stopped selling the N7 2013 in October 2014, 18 months of updates would end April 2016 I think.

Despite rumors circulating about the chance of official M for flo, I doubt that it will be left out. After all, Google recently announced monthly updates for a list of nexus devices that includes flo. Even if those updates came only in the form of patches for L, I'm sure unofficial support will be there. Even my old galaxy nexus has unofficially made it to the latest revision of lollipop...
I believe we will get it. It just turned 2 and its only like 3 month's older than the nexus 5. It'll be the last major update but it'll still get it. The 2 year guarantee is just that, a guarantee it doesn't mean they'll necessarily cut off devices at that point

Totally agree, 5.1.1 runs smooth on my N7 so I see no reason from a hardware perspective that the N7 shouldn't get M. I think it will be last release so lets hope its a good one.
When I bought my wife's 2013 Nexus 7, it was mid-2014 and I thought for sure it was my only chance of owning a Nexus device, living in the US. I bought it for me, but then I discovered I don't like tablets very much. Fortunately, my wife loves it, so I wiped it and made it hers.
From 4.2 to 4.3, 4.4, 5.0, and now 5.1, it's had four major updates. That's more than any Android phone I've owned has gotten. First got one, second got none, third one got three, fourth one got one so far. Samsung, Motorola, and Samsung again on US Cellular, and HTC on Verizon. All flagships but the first one. It seems to me that I really care about updates on my phones, but on the tablet, it doesn't matter. The tablet doesn't feel like a mission-critical device. It feels like a media device. Had the price gap not been so wide, I wonder if I shouldn't have just gotten an iPad. Not that the Nexus 7 is bad. I just found that a tablet didn't do anything for me. It's just a bigger screen.
If Google is going to cut Nexus updates off after just two years, that's better than a lot of OEM phones get. Though, I do wonder, why did the Nexus 4, released in 2012, get the M preview, but not flo, released in 2013? Or am I mistaken? Was the Nexus 4 abandoned as well?

Nice, why didn't I think of that. I suppose CM is the most popular rom for N6?
Cm would be popular but most ROMs are going to layers instead of cm theme engine as it's native in marshmallow on nexus ... So a lot of ROMs like slim and pure nexus are very popular
6.0 also has native multi task
Pa still has builds but not much going on there as a lot of their big things never got merged

I made my purchase the first day in which preorders became available, it'll arrive by October 27-28. Marshmallow will be coming out this week, so I'll be working on Marshmallow when I have the time, Nexus 6 (2014) should start receiving builds and once the 6P arrives (I selected 1 day shipping), I'll start working on making the ROM compatible with N6P which shouldn't be too difficult.
Hope to see you there

No, and its app is available on Google Play. Welcome to XDA!
Definitely looking forward to getting back to using custom roms after being unable to with my last 2 phones having a locked bootloader (so they were limited).
Really disappointed Android Pay won't work with Custom Roms, but holding out hope someone will find a workaround.
Chroma and BeansTown(purenexus) ROM would probably be the best top two for customization and stability. And it looks like Chroma ROM will be coming for N6P =]
