Should I jump to the Moto X? - Moto X General

Motorola is offering the X at a stupid cheap price. I was wondering how the dev scene is for the phone? Is it fully unlocked including the kernel?

Its fully unlocked if you buy the Dev edition or T-Mobile unlocked edition, the latter lose its warranty when unlocking. As for the 'dev scene' you could find that out yourself, but there will be official CM for it.

Depends on which one your buying. Dev edition? Which carrier? Seems like most people (including myself) are just rooting and installing gravity box. The phone is so solid as is that I don't think most people feel the need to be flashaholics. Do yourself a huge favor and read up on all the development threads

I would buy the Verizon edition and It would be the dev version;. Honestly yeah, Id just like to root it so I can well have root access for xposed framework, titanium back up etc.

I see it comes on JB 4.2.2 ... Also hows the hardware and camera?

Hardware is great IMO.....camera not so much

Don't know about Dev edition but my daughter just got hers and it had 4.4 installed.

I'm pretty sure the camera is the same as the maxx. Actually, everything should be the same inside save for larger battery and wireless charging.

I'm thinking about making the jump today as well. It's the Moto X with a wood back or the Nexus 5. Has anyone transitioned from a Nexus 4 to the Moto X?
Main thing I'm concerned with is the lack of dev's and ROM options in comparison to my Nexus.

Roms aren't in big demand here. Xposed and gravity box give all the same customizations. Plus cm based anything takes away the unique Moto x features.
If rom flashing is anyone's thing....I'd pass on the x.
Maybe when the x is done getting updates roms will start flowing....but don't see much happening before then.

A better camera is the only thing stopping the Moto X from being the greatest phone of all time.
I own the Moto X Dev Edition GSM
My back up phone is the Nexus 5 to fulfill any flashing needs.

I dont have wireless charging and Im going to sell my phone on swappa. I dont have a need for it any longer.

yeah I dont need to flash roms much anymore.. Im mainly interested in Xposed. That will work fine once rooted right? Would I need to root with the dev edition? this would be my first dev edition.

Yes...you still need to unlock dev edition boot loader...and root. Like the other phones capable of those. The only difference is you get to keep your warranty. Lol
And xposed will work fine once rooted.

Okay yeah /I have to look into whats the best way to root and unlock. Im guessing there is a utility program.

Well if the support's loose, hopefully they can tighten it back up.
Wouldn't bother me if it did happen though, this is the only phone I've ever had where I prefer the stock ROM (with some xposed tweaks) to a custom, including CM which has been on every device I've owned that it supports.
It was just a matter of time before he lost it again.. Really am surprised it took that long.

I have not run a ROM yet that didn't have issues its not even worth it with xposed. Since I have some apps that require xposed modules to work I have to run it anyway. So there is no benefit to a custom ROM that since the beginning has been broken ie. No speaker phone camera and video issues. Just don't see the need unless it was flawless. I will say this my phone is much smoother on a custom ROM that is for sure. But no active notifications and touch less control sucks.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well, Active Display and Touchless control were not going to be portable anyway..
Most of the things in GravityBox give a feel of a custom ROM.
One thing I don't understand, why all the hate for xposed modules? I am not too fond that they must exist but don't get why one be be so obverse to running a couple to make life better.

Once Motorola stops supporting this phone , we will need custom roms to stay updated. And I think AD and TC will be an inbuilt feature in the future versions of android. So I would want dev to go on to keep this community alive.

Funny. The Moto X (first gen) is the first phone I had in years that I did not feel the urge to root. And I used to be a compulsive flasher. About the only thing I miss is being able to easily block ads, and even those I can handle. Makes life easier....

At home at least, have you tried to use open DNS to block them? You can set up your router to use openDNS as the DNS it hands out to client and then any of the known ad domains that are erksome you can block at the DNS level similar to what you did with adblocking via /etc/hosts previously with root.

This!
My last phone was a samsung and it was nearly useless with touchwiz and bloat.
The only thing that really annoys me on the moto X is the "AT&T" constantly in notification bar.
In the latest update they have an option to disable the carrier in the status bar. Should be on this screen. Mine disappeared for some reason but I looked it up and it should he there.

I've been the same way with my Moto X. I did try running TowelPieRoot for a few weeks recently with Xposed but was having some weird glitches so yesterday I went ahead and factory reset again and updated to 4.4.4. I don't feel like I'm missing enough to make it worth the trouble, and I want to get 5.0 on it as soon as possible which will mean not waiting till root(assuming root is possible). I've still got my Nexus 4 for flashing stuff and have been running an Android L port on it for a few months now; it's pretty awesome and I can't wait to get the new look and features on my Moto X.

VZW dev edition here. My experience has been similar. I am rooted since there are several Tasker things I like to do that require it. Also one or two Xposed things. Never had a glitch. I'd stay unrooted but miss the tweaks when they're not there.
The upgrade to 4.4.4 was enough of a hassle that I questioned whether to stay stock or not afterwards. But missing my Tasker apps and wifi tether led me back to root.
But damn, this phone is close to perfect.

Yeah it won't be hard to root if you have an unlocked bootloader. I'm keeping mine locked until my warranty runs out. There's no way of knowing if there will be another solution like TowelPieRoot to achieve root w/out unlocking the bootloader for Android 5.0.
So, with Android 5.0 on the horizon for our Moto X, should it be expected that at first lots of things will be broken with xposed, and gravity box and such?

No problem. The way xposed is now, If you switch to ART with it installed it never switches to ART.

is it hopeless waiting for turbo development?

I see there is a thread abt a reward for who ever makes an exploit to root the turbo.
I have an upgrade available but I don't want to waste it on a phone that can't even be rooted. Another thing is that this decision is on limited time. Because once the turbo gets lollipop , rooting will be out the window . so if you wait to long to get the turbo and it's shipped from the factory with lollipop, your screwed from the get go. So judging by the older lines of "moto droids" do you think or have read anything online abt development being slim to none?
Or any future plans on a developers edition ?

You are forgetting that there is another variant of the Turbo, the Maxx one that will come with unlockable bootloader and free of Verizon crap. People will make it their way to get on of those, and probably development will be significantly more active that with Turbo.
On the other hand, Lollipop doesn't mean no more root, there are already devices with Lollipop and gained root few days ago, so it shouldn't be a worry.
:fingers-crossed:
Correct about root and lollipop but what's the point? Why do you NEED root and unlocked boot loader when lollipop gets here? Xposed won't work. Lollipop will be the os that negates the need for root.

Xposed doesn't work yet, but likely will in the future. And there are other things to use root for than just Xposed. Such as Tasker, AdFree, Cerberus, etc. Root works great on my Nexus 7 with Lollipop, albeit without Xposed.
I mainly want/need root for ARLiberator or ARUnchained. Right now I can cast to my receiver and get sound but ARU gave full mirroring and allowed me to control my phone through my headunit (with root). Combined with Tasker to automate and it was fantastic. Xposed was real nice to have and I'm sure it will be updated for L at some point but I wasn't really using a whole lot on there I'll miss. Same goes for battery tweaker like Greenify. It was awesome with root and combined with Xposed but w/ the monster battery on this thing and the improvements with Project Volta I'm thinking I won't miss it so much.
Just want root access to freeze the VZW crap. My 2 cents.

You can disable those apps now which is essentially the same thing.
Disable works just as good
Hadn't tried that. Just hid them using a launcher. OK, I'll disable them. Gracias!
I don't think it's hopeless. Just look at the bounty. No, it's no guarantee a dev will obtain that full amount but it show's that we're interested.
My guess and hope is that the Middle Man will come back and we'll be able to get unlock codes. It's our best shot.
In the meantime I'll stay at KitKat and cross my fingers. Root for me will give me custom DPI's which 4.7"+ phones need so badly. Besides that I'm doing just fine without root. Yeah, a few customization options would be fine but stock Motorola Android flies!
Only thing I really want/need is WiFi Tether. I've managed to tether using a USB but the process is way more complex and only allows for one device at a time.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
Without root you cannot manipulate the hosts file meaning you cannot block ads completely as you can with root. This alone is enough to make root worthwhile for me because I despise ads. I also like to change fonts at the system level and make many other customizations that require root and lollipop in no way negates those needs.
Not that my opinion or likes and dislikes matter. And that's the thing, people who say root is not needed speak for themselves just as I speak for myself and no one else. I don't ever say YOU need root or YOU do not need root because I have no business deciding what someone else does or does not need. Just saying...
I just think it's going to take some time gents. Phone has been out for what? Two weeks?

Agreed. This is the on thing I really want. I can live without the rest of the stuff. If I could pay for an app that worked for wifi tether I would do that and probably be happy without root all together.
I had the RAZR maxx HD. I thought we'd never get root for the longest time. It took a while - a bunch of months, at least, but we got it.
Now, the maxx HD never was nearly as popular as the droid turbo. That's a fact.
I'm sure someone out there will find a way. It's not about if, but when. That's my opinion, at least
2 things I want root for..
Messing with speaker output
And shutter speed of the camera
This phone will probably never be rooted, but if you aren't okay with that then why would you ever buy this device?
Maybe I'm not understanding this, but why is a developers edition needed? Why dont you just unlock developer mode on the phone you get? I did.

Just wanted to share my sadness lol

The only part of your list I can relate to is adaway.
I used to ROM my Samsung phones to debloat and get better performance.
The Maxx just plain works as is.
Now the WiFi tethering root would allow would be nice.
I have rooted for a while now, and I am not missing it as much as I used to. All that flashing was out of control... Especially because the builds were sort of sketchy on my Razr M. Just not enough Dev support for the phones I seem to like. The Maxx works quite well as it is, and now I am impatiently waiting for Lollipop. I still flash builds on my Razr M once and a while.. Now that I have Maxx, the builds have gotten better.
I feel the pain, had an unlocked bootloader on my Maxx until I had to send the phone back in for warranty work. Now I'm stuck with locked 4.4.4. *sigh* I have a Moto X Developer Edition on the way so I can play.
At lease I am not alone lol. I do like flashing ROM. I usually stay wit the ones that is more stable. I play games on my fone so the more space I can make the better I feel haven't seen lollipop so hopefully I get it due to I have my maxx on metro pcs working perfect 4g LTE

People have had success getting it to work on the Nexus 5 and Note 5. They just needed a Nexus 6 to initially activate the sim. I don't see that being any different here.
I feel like the pure edition is a great choice for people who are not coming from the N6. I mean if I could do it over again I probably would be picked the pure over the N6 but now that I have one I probably won't be upgrading to the Pure. Surely something better will come along next year that will blow the N6 and the Pure edition completely out of the water lol. Just as long as it has front facing speakers.

Now, there isn’t a way to tell if calls placed with WiFi connected are actual WiFi calls like you would see on the Nexus 6, so I can’t confirm that you are able to make WiFi calls and go through that whole seamless hand-off that Fi enables. I also don’t know if this will connect to Sprint and then switch to T-Mobile as I bounce around Portland. Source here
