Ok, so I just bought the note 3 as an upgrade from my note 2. I set up the phone and came to make a call when I soon realized that the bar on top is ALWAYS green. It should be black until someone answers then it turns green and when the person hangs up it turns red. It's a small bug but it's rather frustrating. And also, before the set up was call, video call, message. On the note 3 its video call, call, message which is a bit confusing. Please help. I'm new to this whole thing. Thanks in advance
Not with me any such issues. Never experience even

This happened to me when I first got my note. It went away after I disabled T-Mobile lookout mobile security. It may have just been a coincidence though.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that and sadly the problem still occurs. I called Samsung and they said it was a problem with the update that will be fixed soon. I blame Samsung and their stupid Touchwiz UI. I got 4.4 on November 25th on my Nexus and 4.4.2 a week later. Yet here we are on near $800 phones and we don't even have 4.4 yet. Bunch of baloney. Might be getting a Nexus 6 instead of a Note 4 if they keep this up.

I agree, simplest thing they could do is give us a non buggy phone after spending that kind of money. Well, hopefully the new update will fix this issue. Does anyones screen keep flickering on and off? The lights keep dimming on its own. Checked all the options and everything is off. Seems like the new update is needed today before tomorrow

I thankfully don't have this problem. Chrome always opens to a totally black page when I click it from the dock, then as soon as I go to scroll, the page will appear. Nothing going on with the actual screen brightness though.

When the phone is changing brightness that's because of the hardware. If your phone is really working hard on something it will dim the display to get extra power for the hardware. Don't have brightness on max if you would like to avoid this. It's a supersmart solution by Samsung.

Dont know where to start.
1. crashes all the time,
2. crashes when the battery is low, have to do a soft reset to regain functionality
3. the battery life is a joke. charge in the morning and by around 4pm i got to be cautious on what calls i take as it will die on me.
4. freaks out randomly when using opera. could it be my fingers are too big? lol
5. sms some times dont send. found the fix on the htc site, still not working.
feel like i made a terrible mistake getting this phone, why should i have to do hacks/fixes my self when i have never needed to on any othr fone before?
its trully a different fone culture using this, as i type this on the hd2 i have had to retype this at least 7 times. lol....
anyway the basic functions should be flawless, but they are not which worries considerably.
Seems like you got a bad piece which is unfortunate. I hope you can get it changed, because this is not how it's supposed to be.
I think I got a pretty decent piece. I never experienced any battery issues and neither the sms bug which I know many experienced on this forum. Also mine never crashes so I can just assume that you got a faulty piece.
As for the typing I can agree with you. However, if you tweak by decreasing the sensitivity (which actually I never experienced as a decrease in sensitivity, only as an enhancement while typing), that problem will be gone as well. It's not a difficult tweak, it can be easily done by installing BsB tweaks which can be found here in the forums.
Although I agree with you that one should not be forced to tweak this phone oneself, but I guess we'll have to live with it
thanks for your reply,
i will try the tweak, and see how it goes, i emailed vodafone to let them know. i forgot to let them know how slow the phone gets some times.
oh well, this is what i get ditching nokia!
try to see if you can exchange the phone. must be able to if you can show the phone crashes to vodafone and if you have the device not for too long they should exchange it for you as far as I know,..
Vodafone! are saying they have none in stock and cant replace it, would it be worth just flashing it with a different ROM since there is nothing they can do...

Have you tried a hard reset?
Also MaskedMagi just posted that Vodafone DO have some replacement phones left: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5285586&postcount=184
Perhaps it would be worth calling them back.

Yep, just to clarify that was about 3 hours ago so fingers crossed I'll get the phone tomorrow, though with the incoming snow probably not
I'm hoping that it is actually a HD2 and not a HTC Touch HD 2 or something as people have been confused over the phone before, I'll definately check before giving back my old one!
Needless to say I hope the newer one is not in fact worse than the old one! Give them a ring if you want, but remember you have to be within the 28 day period to get a return/replacement.
The direct line for returns they gave me was: 08448540430
Called them back but it was to late, got to call back during normal working hours... they are playing the arse because i called after the 28 days, when in fact I originally called on the 30th December, 27 days from when i received the phone on the 3rd.
I am very much annoyed, if they werent on holiday, there systems were down, then if not that they put me through to 3 different depts to then have to email v-store to them then telling me I am actually meant to call another dept.
These guys cannot be serious!!!
If you make enough of a fuss and tell them your original call was within the 28 day period and that they have delayed you they might listen, just have to see how it goes. Good luck with them tomorrow, keep us posted on how it goes

Originally they did, and the lady was meant to call back. But when she did the phone crashed. So I called back on the land line and got someone else instead.
Then had to go through the whole process again!! Will call back tommorrow though!
Did a hard reset we will see how that goes in the mean time.

My fiance's Evo Shift has sporadic problems with the touch screen. We can't replicate it on demand so the Sprint techs refuse to believe it's actually broken (we've been in 3-4 times).
Basically, it will just go crazy sometimes. We can literally set the phone down and watch her notifications bar jump up and down all over the screen. Her contacts will open and it will start calling people, disconnect the call, then call someone else...all on it's own.
It's as if it becomes hypersensitive and registers touches that aren't there. It's in a completely random fashion but makes the phone unusable for a good amount of time. Sprint forced her to the 2.3.3 update so I can't root it, though I'm not sure I'd want to anyway in case I found a tech who actually knew what the hell they were doing (very rare with Sprint in this area, at least.)
Any ideas on what's causing it? I am convinced it's hardware but Sprint won't replace the phone because it happens to sporadically. Could it be software? Is there a screen calibration tool I can use without being root?
Go into menu-settings-Language & Keyboard-Touch Input settings-Text input-Calibration tool. Folow the prompts. May or may not help.
If they won't fix it in the store and prboy's suggestion doesn't work you should call Sprint and talk to someone. They aren't doing their job otherwise. You shouldn't have to deal with a phone that isn't working properly. It would be different if you were trying to get a free upgrade to an EVO 3D or trying to replace a beat up phone for free or something which it doesn't sound like you are doing. Mentioning you have heard good things about the competition will usually seal the deal if it comes down to it as well.
Car dealerships do this too and it really pisses me off. It can really be hard to diagnose an intermittent problem and they blow you off because of it. They should give you the benefit of the doubt and switch out your phone. Why would you be there if you weren't having issues.
The calibration prboy suggested doesnt sound like itll work because thats only for the htc ime keyboard.
You said it happened on 2.2 then sprint told you to upgrade to the 2.3.3 OTA update and it still has problems?
Yes, that's exactly what happened. FIRST they told me it was the app Lookout that was causing the problem...that they had an internal memo from Sprint saying it was malware and to delete it. They refused to even look at the phone further until we removed Lookout from her device. Then they sent us home and told us to download the 2.3 update and it would fix the issue.
It didn't and that Sprint tech REALLY made me want to punch him in the face. Incredibly condescending.

Well first off lookout security protects you from the very thing they said it is so dont listen to that.
If it is happening on both updates then it probably is not Software that is the problem.
Is there alot of times where you press something and it doesnt work and you keeps touching it? maybe it is finally registering those touches after you leave it be and thats why. it reads those touch inputs all at once and performs them
I suppose it could be that, but how could we stop that from happening? Stop them from 'queuing' up in such a manner?

It also calibrates the finger touch response for the screen. To the individual using it, we all press the screen differently.

Agreeded. As long as it happens even before you install any apps. Like right after a just doing a phone reset back to factory.
If its because its responding to finger touches at a later time then that usually is a problem with the hardware like the processor. Since it sounds like a hardware issue i can only suggest take it to sprint and show them the problem
I had the same problem with my first shift just call them talk to the tech. dep. Tell them your problem and the will set you up with a new phone they did it for me. But it does sound like what happened with my old one.

Hello there. I went to Los Angeles last month and after a little research on tablet pcs, I decided to buy a nexus for my wife. Since I had no time to order it online, decided to visit a retail store at Santa Monica called Macmall.
I was bringing this as a gift, so I bought it and opened it right away just to make sure it was working properly.
So, I went back to argentina, wife happy with her nexus, until yesterday.
She came crying saying that the nexus was broken.
The screen is showing nothing but vertical lines. The touchscreen is responding to finger swipes and sound works, but of course all of that is useless since screen is defective.
She swears she didn't hit, drop or wet the tablet pc, I did check it many times and it has absolutely no signs of mistreatment.
I turned it off, soft reset pressing power for ten seconds, removed the cover and the battery, and once, I was able to see the Google logo properly but quickly vanished into lines again.
So... What options do you think I have?
Nexus is not being sold on my country and Google is giving me no support at all.
I contacted Asus through their website, still waiting for an answer but I'm not sure if they will help since I'm far away from USA.
I'll appreciate any help, or piece of advice you can give me.
You might be in luck. I had a problem with the speaker once, thinking it was the hardware, and I thought I would have to return it. I think for fixing your screen problem, you should reflash the stock Rom. If you are unfamiliar with what I am trying to say, it is basically like reinstalling the stock Operating System (Android). Find out how to reflash the stock Rom. Since you could see the Google logo properly, i'm pretty sure it isn't hardware. Might just be a corrupted stock Rom. Here is a guide that should work: Click Here. It will wipe all of your data/storage so it will be like your Nexus 7 came out of the box.
Best of luck recovering it!
Edit: What is also very weird is it seems like it happened suddenly. Not out of the box, but randomly.

Thanks for the answer. I may have not expressed myself correctly.
I'm not seeing anything on the screen but those annoying vertical lines.
After removing the battery a few times, once showed me the Google logo, just a one second flash, and then the lines again.
The only person I saw with this very same problem, had it as you said, straight from the box.
I asked my wife and she updated the nexus a few days ago and barely used it, so even if it sounds weird it could be a software issue.
Question is, will I be able to reinstall the stock OS just guessing where to push, I mean, with only those lines on the screen. I'm like... Blindfolded

Oh now I see. First, anyway, do not manually remove your battery. That might affect something. To force shutdown hold down the volume down and power button for about 10-20 seconds until it turns off. Now, with the vertical lines, now i'm pretty sure since you clarified, it is the software. I think I know a fix for reflashing the stock Rom. Use this toolkit: Here. Click the option "Flash stock and unroot". Try that and it will Flash stock. Try software updating once it works and you could boot up without the problem. If it still has the problem if you software update (Unlikely), then just do that again and keep it at stock version.
Hope this helps!

I'm still not allowed to post any URLs, but I found a video on youtube of a guy with exactly the same problem.
Just search "Jon417silka nexus" and you'll see it.
I'm dowloading this NexusRootToolkit you recommended, it's +200MB so it'll take a while.
I have no skills on flashing or rooting any device, but I have read the instructions and doesn't seem to be too complicated.
I'll be awake all night trying to solve it if it's necessary.
I'll let you know how it went in a few hours.
Well... I finally downloaded the nexus root toolkit.
It was kinda easy actually, just had some hard time trying to enable the USB debugging mode, since... well i can't see anything on the screen.
I was able to download the drivers, and run the stock rom but, unfortunately, no luck on the screen.
Im just seeing green lines which i assume is the green android logo on the center on the first boot or something.
by the way, google answered me today saying somthing like, they cant do anything since im outside the us, so i have to contact asus.
It's too bad flashing the stock rom didn't fix it, I'd say it seems to be a hardware problem.
Even if you were in USA, google will only help you if you bought it within 14 days from Google Play Store.
You should call Asus Argentina [ http://latin.asus.com/Static_WebPage/Service_center_argentina/ ] and explain what is wrong, and give them the serial number. The number is located somewhere on the box, and on a removable sticker on the bottom back of the Nexus [As well as in the Settings, but you cannot read the screen so that is useless]. If you can't find the serial number, you might be able to get it via adb, but I'm not sure.
Asus has a 1 year warranty on tablets, but I'm not completely positive what they will say since it was bought in USA, and you are now in Argentina. But hopefully they will be able to RMA it and repair/replace your device. gl!
Yeah, it has to be hardware. I think you should follow Sikagoon7's advice and return it because it is under law. It couldn't be your or your wife's fault, because as you described, there were no scratches or anything. I guess it just might be a bad device. Replace it because the Nexus 7 is so worth it.
Probly gpu chipset. Its getting distorting at high frequency. Since first logo is a small frequency image and some times provided for BIOS its show normal. (Thats my guess)

I was giving up all my hopes on this, plugged the nexus to the computer and clicked the OEM lock to return to its original factory state.
You know... I don't want them to say my warranty it's void for messing with it.
Of course, I didn't noticed any changes, swiped my finger a couple times and then...
WHAT THE....
The lines vanished and screen started to function properly, a few lines were noticeable for a few moments, now the screen is fine.
Now things got even weirder...
My wife it's been using it for two hours, with Monsters Ate My Condo (which may be pushing the cpu a little bit) and it's working flawlessly.
Problem is... I'm pretty sure that if the screen turns off it will die again.
Is there a way to keep the nexus always on, never go to sleep, just dim the screen to minium brightness or something...
Any other solution you guys think i can try is also welcome.
Please understand that returning this to Asus will be my last resort (if they decide to accept it, which I'm not sure).
Once again, thanks for everyone's time and replies
If you can not turn off your screen without it breaking it I would RMA it back to Asus.

No, I haven't.
I don't even know where to start...
The fact that I live in Argentina may be a complication.
Since Asus is does not sell the Nexus here, they probably won't help me at all.
And the distance may be a problem since shipping to USA is quite expensive.
I contacted Asus via their global website, still waiting for an answer.
This option kind of sucks but maybe you should sell it cheaper to someone on xda have them use the warranty exchange and you could buy another one also possibly from xda. Like i said it sucks but it may be your best option at this point.

I'm gonna bump this old thread I started about a year ago, to share with you guys the rest of the story.
I contacted north american ASUS RMA by email since Google is not taking any responsibility for their tablet.
And latin american ASUS won't take my warranty as valid.
I tried to explain my complicated situation to the RMA guy. It was a little hard to understand since my english is not flawless.
But I had a friend flying to united states, he carried my broken nexus with him and sent it to repair as soon as he arrived.
Tricky part was: he was only staying for 10 days. So ASUS had ten days to receive, repair, and send the Nexus back to my friend so he could bring it to Argentina.
I crossed my fingers and decided to wait, fortunately they did a good job and now it's working back again.
However I noticed the battery doesn't lasts for as long as I expected...
Anyway thanks to everyone for sharing ideas and for your time.
Please see attachment, it is a screenshot similar to the problem I have.
A part of the screen is not touch-respondsive. It only happened recently, never had this problem before.
Possible to fix? I have trouble unlocking the 9 dots pattern everytime I turn on the phone because of this problem.
Please help, thanks.
Never mind, flashed a different kernal and its working now.
edit: Wait, no it's still there.
update: I wiped everything and installed factory 4.2.2 patch (occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz) but still cannot fix this problem. Please help!
update: Tried this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027476 still not working :crying:
update: This also not working for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163924... possible hardware issue?
verdict: I will live with this for now, after 1 day and still can't fix it then I will contact google hopefully for a replacement.
bump
I am having the exact same issue. That almost makes me think it could be a software issue but you said you already did a factory reset.
The weird thing is that it looks like the same part of the screen. Its a horizontal section in the very middle.
My best conclusions are that its the digitizer. It just started happening out of no where though. Very frustrating. Makes it impossible to hit the send button on the stock messaging app without minimizing the keyboard! I take excellent care of my Nexus 4. It has a case and it hasn't been dropped. It hardly has a scratch on it! Its a month old.

Strongertyer I can feel your frustration.
Here's mine (the one in my op was found from google). Mine is a bit lower, it blocks the top half of the qwer line on the keyboard and the yes/no buttons on prompt windows.
I can still type qwer just fine by pressing the bottom half of the keys, but for the the prompts I have to tilt and rotate the screen every time so the buttons aren't under the "dead zone".
Strongtyer are you also thinking of sending the phone back to Google?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Just talked to support and they seemed helpful. However, his first suggestion was to do a factory reset of course. He said if that didn't work then I could send my phone back for a replacement. Did a factory reset and still the same issue. Looks like I'll be calling again tomorrow.
I guess the plus side is that they send brand new phones and not just refurbished ones.
Any luck on your end?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I gave up fixing it already as you can see in my 2nd post and I believe it is not possible to fix it other than having the whole screen replaced, so I asked directly for a replacement under warranty. Then after a brief moment google emailed me a set of instructions for packing the phone.
So on Sunday evening I booked the courier, printed the documents, picked everything back in the box, warped and taped it. And today the courier came and collected my phone.
Now I have to use my good old HTC Legend again. However it uses regular SIM card, so I had a bit of fun making myself an adapter to up size the Nexus 4's micro-sim!
I talked to Google today and they are sending me a replacement. They told me I can keep the phone till the new one arrives. I just have to return it within 21 days.
Just crossing my fingers that they don't say the damage is my fault. I don't know how o could have caused it. I haven't does it and I take really good care of it.

You should contact google anyway if you want a warranty replacement. Go to the link below, click contact google, answer a few check box questions and there should be a phone number.

I live in the Netherlands and the nexus 4 did not get official release here. Should I still contact Google?
Could it be this problem only happens with the newer phone's? I have the one with the little feet on the back. Version 605 I thought. What version do you guys have?
Also should I unroot and lock the boot loader when I send it in for repair ?even though the problem has nothing to do with it.

Welcome to xda-developers. Your English is fine.
You should contact Google.
Interesting that you mention the newer version of the phone -- I'd be interested in knowing if this is in fact a result of a newer manufacturing process, different materials, or maybe the place of manufacture (Korea or China). The place of manufacture can be identified by the letter in the fourth position of the serial number found on the box.
can someone update us on this issue? I have the same problem and i am so sad! I saved up 8 months to get this phone!

Could it be this problem only happens with the newer phone's? I have the one with the little feet on the back. Version 605 I thought. What version do you guys have?
Also should I unroot and lock the boot loader when I send it in for repair ?even though the problem has nothing to do with it.
Sorry for the poor English...

well, its certainly a hardware issue.
Digitizer, for what I know.
But no easy solution.
Would have happened due to the faulty charger.
But google is not helping!
I have the same exact issue. Playing PVZ2 is now extra difficult because of this issue.
Is there any other fix other than an RMA (currently not in the US)? :crying:

I have this same screen issue. Mine is is first row from top which makes it very frustrating. I am on 4.4.2 and still have this issue.
Can you describe what you've tried in more detail?
I have the same problem but mine is like 2 inches from the bottom of the screen. I can use the softkeys in portrait but they are unusable in landscape. I have had the phone since Nov 12 so sadly my phone is now out of warranty. LG's approved repair centre want £95 for a new screen. I am thinking maybe buy a Nexus 5 and trade this in for £70. I could sell it for like £130 but I would feel bad selling a phone I know the screen is on its last legs.
So ASIDE from the problem where my touchscreen doesn't work right when plugged in, and ASIDE from the problem where my screen flickers at random, and my screen would get lines through it, now I'm having this exact problem here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyOG-FPL0Mc
Whenever I turn my phone on it has these green lines. I have tried rebooting, restoring, and different kernels. **** is still there. Phone has never been dropped, and it's out of warranty. Literally the worst phone I've ever had the unforunate experience of having to use. Sorry, but never using another Nexus device, but since I'm stuck with this piece of **** till I can get the funds for a different, less worthless phone, is there any temporary fix? At all? Pretty impossible to text or read emails or anything when the whole screen is flickering and half of it is green, gives me a goddamn migraine.
Oh yeah, let's not forget the part where I had it charged to 100%, left for work with it in my pocket, maybe a dozen times today checked the time on it, and sent two text messages, never even made a call, and got home and it was at 10% battery.
sounds like you should have changed it while it was still in warranty, why did you wait?

I figured it was a problem with 4.3 (other members here said some custom kernel and rom usually fixed it) so I figured 4.4 would fix it. It used to be a once-every-two-weeks or so problem, not a literally every time I use the phone problem, so it wasn't a problem.
Never had an issue with the N4 or my GNex before it! (GF has the GNex, and still going strong!). Looking forward to the N5 and will be getting the GF one as well in the new year!

I was talking to a friend about it - I love the premise of the Nexus line, and will still definitely support it and tell people to buy them, but I personally will never own another one myself. Well, maybe I will, when it's non-LG. May sound stupid but of all the phones I've had, besides the suicide-HTC One X, no phone has given me as many problems as this Nexus 4.. I'll be selling it for parts and adding some money to get a Note 2 or S4 as soon as I get some funds.
This thread is pointless. You aren't going to change anybody mind by posting this. This is a Q&A section.

Looked like a defective LCD unit that needs to be replaced.
