[Q] Reboots - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Ladies and Gents,
I've updated my Note3 to the latest Update and installed Scotts Clean Rom 1.5 and it ran great until I started restoring my apps. Once all apps were restored (from the Play store, not from my Titanium BU Archive) the phone started rebooting and was stuck in a loop, couldn't get it back to the homescreen. Googled and found that some folks say "Remove your SD card and turn off the constant Wi-Fi scanning" but that didn't help, so I wiped and re-installed the Rom....all was well...until I restored my Apps again. I don't know which App could be causing this, they're all from the Play Store and all of my apps are Paid Apps (Don't like Ads in my apps so I pay for them if they have a Pay App available). Just wiped again and haven't restored any apps, but rebooted the device myself about 5 times, everything works.
Have any of you ever seen this before? Most of my Apps are Camera and Photo Editing Apps. I'm not going to restore anything because I need my phone work work, so I'll only attach my Personal and Work E-mails to it, but that's not going to fly for long. Apparently the Boot-Looping issue is known http://www.sammobile.com/2013/10/17/some-galaxy-note-3-units-experiencing-boot-loops/
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Have you tried restoring 1 app at a time to narrow it down?

That'll be my next step....I have over 450 paid apps, so I'm going to weed out the apps that I don't use all the time, and focus on the ones I do use. It will be time consuming.....

LOL...I'm an App-o-holic.

I just downloaded another ROM for the new update, and I'll load all of my apps with that to see if it's isolated by ROM's or Apps. It's a snowy wonderland outside, so there's nothing better to do than play with my phone and figure this out.

Ok....this is odd. I've tried a different ROM and installed ALL of my apps, no issues, no rebooting.....so one of my apps doesn't like to play with Scotts Clean Rom.....hmmmmm. Seeing how there are only two ROM's available that are for the new OTA update, I'm going to stick with this ROM and install Scotts into another slot and then go one by one, and see why/how/which app is not playing nice.

[Q] Amazon App Store and Android Market

Hey Everyone,
I haven't seen anything on the Epic forums about this yet... so here is my piece.
I got the Amazon app store the other day, and I'm pretty impressed. The most impressive feature, to me, isn't the free app a day... it is the fact that it remembers your purchases/downloads. I've wiped my phone yesterday to start from scratch, and as soon as I reinstalled the Amazon App Store, it asked me if I wanted to view my purchased apps. I clicked each one, they downloaded and installed.
The part I don't get, is why can't the Android Market do the same thing? You are required to put in a user/pass (just like amazon app store)... so what prevents them from at least remembering what apps you've downloaded and provide the links to re-download them? I've used Titanium Backup to back up and restore, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't create problems (phone runs much smoother and with less problems when I don't use Titanium Backup to restore).
I know this was long, and you've probably lost interest already... but if anyone has any info or knowledge on the subject, please chime in!
That is all.
Actually my nexus one does auto restore from android market, so it might be a feature in gingerbread.

Ok, maybe I need to clarify a bit...
I haven't "purchased" any apps from the Android Market or the Amazon App Store. I've downloaded numerous free apps.
I would imagine paid apps get re-linked... but what about the free apps you've purchased?
I've been playing around with ROMS... so after every wipe, I go in to the market... and nothing is there.
If this is a feature in Gingerbread, it will be awesome. I would never worry or hesitate to wipe my phone if I had an issue. It isn't downloading the apps that bother me, it's searching for each one individually.
For some reason the epic doesnt have the back up data thing that aosp phones do.
When you sign in, it automatically redownloads and installs everyapp you had installed.
Also, on market.android.com you can see everything youve downloaded and install it by hand.
I agree that its stupid the epic is missing that feature. My hero running cm6 has it

DK28 had the app restore feature, not sure why it was removed since.

Wow, never knew about this. So if I wipe my phone, I can log into market.android.com and it will redownload all of my apps for me? As nice as it would be to have it all on the device, logging in to the website isn't bad at all!
A lot of the reviews of the Amazon Appstore never seem to mention what I personally think is a killer feature: sorting and filtering.
At any step of the way, you can choose to only view 3+/4+/5+ star apps, among other options. As soon as I heard about the new store, before it even came out, I had high hopes for sorting, knowing it's one of the great features of Amazon.com.
Google tends to shun sorting/filtering in favor of typed search queries. You can see this in the almost religious devotion to search in gmail, where sorting by anything but date is impossible without using a third party client--and this limitation is vehemently defended by Gmail supporters.
In this regard, I think Amazon will remain on top. I just don't see Google backpeddling on this philosophy, and the Android Market will remain dominated by algorithms and search queries.

A little off topic but Sense 2.0 ROMS do that also. I've been running Myn's and Mik's Desire Z ports on my Evo and whenever you log back in with your Gmail account all of your apps, paid and free, automatically start downloading to the phone. Pretty neat feature.
Yep, got a Wifi Xoom today, and sure enough about 90% of my installed apps came over...all of my purchased apps are available for redownload.
Same thing happened when I switched from HeroC to Epic.
This re-download was a new feature of 2.2, and you have to have 2.2 and be going to 2.2+ to restore.

Anybody having issues with the Market?

Just wondering if anyone besides myself is having market issues?
Whenever I attempt to download any app...I keep getting the message the download was unsuccessful. I wiped the data and everything on the Market app and still couldn't download any apps. I even uninstalled the updates on the market and still I couldn't install any apps.

So does anyone else have any issues downloading apps from the Market? Everytime I attempt to download an app, I'm still getting the message that it was unsuccessful.
In addition, whenever I turn on my 4G...I used to get the "4G Antenna On" icon in the taskbar. Now I don't even get that. When I check the 4G status, it just says "scanning".
I just got this Evo this past sunday and I'm trying to hold on to it so I can exchange it for a Nexus S once they come out. But this is driving me crazy. I've updated the prl, profile and did a factory reset, cleared the Market cache and data and I'm still I'm having issues. this has been going on since 6 this morning...
I don't know if this matters but I'm in Madison WI and I'm also stock..non-rooted and my Evo version is the 004 model.
I'm having issues downloading anything since a couple hours ago on my Evo Shift in Milwaukee. New rom, so i wasn't sure if it was my fault or the market's.

I'm unrooted right now. last night when I was rooted, I didn't have these issues. However, I unrooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141&highlight=unroot
When after I unrooted the phone, everything worked fine. But this morning, I updated 3 or 4 apps..then all of sudden all the apps stop downloading and the "download unsuccessful" message popped up.
google market fails...
I rerooted my phone and after I rerooted, I was still unableto download and install apps from the Market App itself. I cleared the Market's Cache/Data again and it still didn't work.
However, if i went to https://market.android.com/ on my pc, I was able to download/install apps. So I'm wondering if the issue is with the Google App itself...
Flashed CyanogenMod Final earlier and have had no problems today / tonight with Market.

I had the same issues while I was on vacation in Orlando last week. First, I thought it was my Miui. Wiped everything and started from scratch with Miui. Didn't work, so I switch Roms, CM7...didn't work. Flashed back to my stock backup...still didn't work. Went back to Miui and said the hell with it after I tried other family members phones, and they couldn't either. No app dwnlds or updates from JUST the app market.
It has been working fine since Monday. I was freaking out though, lol.

been having problems since yesterday and thought it was the rom. I have changed to three different for my flashaholic addiction since then and still some problems. Google maps shows unintalled on all roms and it's installed. Don't know whats going on with that.
Market seems to be running again for me. I just installed 2 apps.

When i go to update my apps... It just hangs and says downloading and doesn't do anything. I have to force close and clear cache for it to work again. It has only done a few times to a new downloading app.

Play Store

My market just changed to the play store. It FCs before I can accept the terms.
I'm on GalaxyTask 14. In fact I just went to GT14 so I tried wiping clean and I still get the FC on the store. Anyone else?
Same here ... I'm sure Task (on his thread) will tell us what to do once his Market also upgrades to Play...
glad to hear I'm not alone - sorry but misery loves company.
I didn't want to start off bothering Task in case it wasn't ROM related
Task 14 here and I get the same. Sucks because I need to redownload Touchdown tonight for a trip tomorrow afternoon. Hope there's a fix before then or else I'll have to find my corporate Palm Pre (gasp).
My market...eh, Play Store forceclosed and the icon is gone. Task 14 as well.

I had the same error with the fc... This fixed it for me. I went to settings> applications> manager applications> all. Found the new google play app & wiped everything I could, such as clear cache, clear data, then did a force stop, and finally an uninstall. After this I clicked my normal app store icon it told me it was being changed to google play again, so I figured I was in for more fcs. but went ahead and agreed. Everything was fine after no more fcs.
I noticed another file updated itself too, but can't remember the name it was some market file though.
Try this and see if it works for you or if I just got lucky.
In double checking on my memory of what I did so I could be precise here I noticed the google play application is now gone. but the market is updated and no fcs.
EDIT: Just noticed it may have only been called the play store app that I uninstalled. not google play app.

Do you actually have an icon for it that works?
Edit: nevermind... I'm sure you do. While the forum was in maintenance I found a way to keep the new google play store and still not have the fc's
So although if you want a quick fix you can uninstall as I instructed before, or just wait until I get up a quick guide to keep the play store without the fc's.
I'm hoping someone will beat me to it though.
Edit 2: Sometimes I make more work for myself by posting quick fixes before thoroughly making sure it's the best fix and this is one of them if you want to keep the google play store and still stop the fc's.
Final Edit: If you are having issues with the play store and haven't uninstalled it yet you should just have to force close it, clear data and run it again and it should start without the FC's.
If you have uninstalled it like I suggested in the previous post and want it back or if you don't have it and want it quicker this quote I swiped from somewhere while googling should help... "If you want to speed up the update process, the usual trick involving force-closing Market, clearing data, uninstalling updates and then loading up the app again seems to work." then wait for the update. It updated so fast for me that I had a hard time testing this fix and had to disable my wifi to confirm uninstallation although YMMV especially if you're trying to get it for the first time. You may want to make sure your device is on the list of supported devices at http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=190860 before trying this a waiting for something that may never come.
This may cause the FC's that started me on this issue to happen again and you'll need to force close it, clear the data and run it again, as stated above in this final edit.
I've already checked this at least twice, but just in case, I'm going to make sure everything works as I say so stay tuned for a few minutes until I post a final edit 2 just in case I'm missing anything.
Final Edit 2: Seems everything works as stated. I couldn't even mess it completely up when I tried.
I think the name is stupid as [email protected], but it's the new app store so what can we do? Seemed like it is really fast and they are having some great sales on apps and a little music, so maybe it's worth putting up with the stupid new name.
If I've caused you needless hassle feel free to call me names and cuss at me. I should have thought of the short way to fix the FC's before sugesting the uninstall. My bad.
Let me know if you have any issues still and I'll help where I can.

This must be a HC 3.2 only issue.. I had the problem on Task 14 and it was easily fixed but flashed back to AOKP b27 last night and the market updated with no issues at all...
Probably... Everyone I've noticed I said they were Task 14 except one who was still on Task 10 or something and asked task for help. I'm sure you know how that reply went.

I wouldn't run any app downloaded from hotfile, not knowing where it ultimately came from. Too much of a chance it's been modded to steal who knows what. Especially a market app :what:

actually this must be because i updated it on my galaxy nexus phone first - to update that i had to clear data on the market and then launch market and after i accepted the terms it updated itself. I then applied the same to my tab so did not see the issues others have experienced

The updater being DMClient right?
One thing to keep an eye on (I plan to disable OTA's on my two tablets) is battery life.
There are supposedly some instances where the system may think the OTA update is corrupt and will continuously try to re-download it in the bg affecting battery life. It's still worth attempting IMHO, just a tip though to keep an eye on your battery, if disabling the OTA affects it for you, you could unfreeze the dmclient service and use a different workaround to stop the OTAs
-For freezing, after looking around, these three apps seem to be best suited - Titanium Backup pro (obviously), AntTek & Gemini App managers (free)
I'll be Rooting then freezing OTAs on my Prime (ww .15) and rebooting it to ensure it doesn't softbrick. If unsuccessful I can flash a blob/format no probs, if successful, I'll root my Nxs7 JB, rinse repeat and report back
--
Successfully performed all tasks on the Prime (hooray no OTAs!!), it's rooted with frozen DMClient, no firmware download prompts since the service was stopped and frozen.
I have rebooted a few times to ensure it is not soft bricked and the App remains frozen
I will be doing my Nexus next since I do not foresee any brick issues, all I need to do is simply look into rooting it.
edit: seeing the several methods all require unlocking to exploit root capability, I'm going to wait out my DOA period (since Ive only had this tablet for 2 days lol) before I unlock the bootloader.
The methods discussed though work perfect for ICS, if you've unlocked and root then turning OTA's off is a sinch, with very minimal risk of a softbrick IMO
Thanks, I will try freezing with TB.

Just to let you know, everything's going awesome with my Prime, initially when I downgraded it, the OTA tried to download (i stopped it at 66 percent) and I just kept the wifi off while I rooted and disabled DMClient.
The bonus of freezing the process/service is when another update occurs ours should continue to block the FOTA, some other methods like modifying the build prop only work until a new update is out.
I'll definitely be unlocking and rooting my nexus to stop ota's

And what would that file be? Where is it located?
Disable using autostarts works...
I had my nexus 7 nagging me constantly to update too... rooted and heavily customized stock rom, different kernel, a lot of system files I altered... I really am not overly concerned about doing an update that might screw with any one of those components and having to go through the whole process of getting it where I want again.
I couldn't find this DMClient you guys are speaking of.
Here's how I did it:
Install Autostarts app.
Go to "After Startup"
Scroll down until you see "Google Services Framework"
There should be several of them. For me it was the third one. Touch it and read the bottom of the popup to find out. It will say "Receiver com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService.....(you get the point)
Disable it. Done...
I don't know if there are any other repercussions to disabling this.. I just know it's not nagging me, and everything works still.
DMclient is a service, it's the most ideal thing to freeze since when stopped the OS will not even attempt to check of OTAs or attempt to download anything, plus it does not modify the OS in any significant way (i.e, editing build.props) so you can undo it with ease if you want. All you need is Root to be able to freeze the service.
I'm not arguing about how to do it... I just couldn't find dmclient , as one of the others stated as well. Just sharing what worked for me.
I don't know if it matters, but it's stock jb 4.1.1 on the nexus 7. If somebody knows where I can locate this dmclient in it, I'd probably feel better about doing that as well. Don't like the idea of it downloading or doing anything in the background if I don't need it to. I'm rather anal about background processes.. at least I have been in my other OS's so far... getting more familiar with the innards of android now... lol
Are we sure it's in this version? I don't even see it in ps in terminal. Unless the process I disabled with autostarts stopped it.
I might enable it again tomorrow and reboot and check ps again.

You're right, I checked my nexus 4.1.2 and the service isn't there, the All area doesnt show everything but even using apps that show all apps/services it doesnt show up. :/
I checked my TF Prime which is 4.1.1 now (sigs outdated) and the service is there, it mustn't exist in AOSP builds or something
It seems as if Google has done a lot of little different things to the OS on the nexus 7. Some of the system components I've messed with relating to sound don't have any effect... I think they left some files in place but are utilizing something different for configuration of sound.
I see every mobile OS now is taking proprietary steps... I still gotta stick with Google though, because they are so heavily involved in the open source community and do a great deal to help the development community.
Next tablet is going to have top have more options for me... better usb support, hdmi out.. the ability to use a headset with Mic connection.. sd card... I am, however, extremely happy with my nexus 7 purchase. For the price and the performance.. can't go wrong there. They are practically giving away the 8 gb models.. barely more than cost of construction. The 16 gb ones aren't exactly a ripoff either..

That solution uses a paid app. Any free solution?

I used this and it stopped the nag, but for some reason, it removes my email app (standard nexus 7 app) it says app not installed . Luckily. I had a titanium backup of it , but putting it back would not work. I reenabled the service, and put the app back and all is well now, but obviously the nag is back. Any ideas?

Google Play Books starting to get annoying.

Does anyone have this issue with Google Play Books working then after 2 days the app is missing? When ever it happens I have to uninstall updates then update it again for it to show up. I think part of it is that I live in Guam, part of U.S. at the same time not really. Same situation as Puerto Rico. Anyone have any suggestions for this problem. Besides going back to the mainland.

I was able to download the app back from the Play store after it disappeared and now it stays. Go look through the list of apps you own / have downloaded.
It disappeared again from the home screen and app drawer, widget disappeared too, so I decided to check settings>apps> all and its there but unusable, have to uninstall then install. Sigh, it's such a hassle to check if it disappeared when going to places without Wi-Fi.Just purchased 3 books, and would be a waste of money to switch to another app.

If you are rooted, you can convert it to a user app instead of system and it'll stay. That's what I did and I've never actually been to the us
I see, thanks, just going to stay stock for a month. I've always rooted my phones on day one and never experienced pure stock before, plus its different with a nexus, there's no sd card, so all my content would get wiped, nearly filled my 16 gb, and could imagine how long everything would take to put back.

Little Tip mate, stop uninstalling and re-downloading etc.
Try downloading a File Explorer e.g. - ES File Explorer.
Find the App in the File Explorer, long press it and click "Create Shortcut" BAM!
Hope this helps !

I'm still on stock too, I just unlocked and flashed su and bb for the little extra functionality.
Sadly, unlocking will do a complete wipe. But I picked up something about rooting without unlocking, using a method from the galaxy. Not sure it'll work tho, at least one person here suggested that it should. Might be worth looking up if you feel books is worth the trouble
