Google Play Books starting to get annoying. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have this issue with Google Play Books working then after 2 days the app is missing? When ever it happens I have to uninstall updates then update it again for it to show up. I think part of it is that I live in Guam, part of U.S. at the same time not really. Same situation as Puerto Rico. Anyone have any suggestions for this problem. Besides going back to the mainland.

I was able to download the app back from the Play store after it disappeared and now it stays. Go look through the list of apps you own / have downloaded.

It disappeared again from the home screen and app drawer, widget disappeared too, so I decided to check settings>apps> all and its there but unusable, have to uninstall then install. Sigh, it's such a hassle to check if it disappeared when going to places without Wi-Fi.Just purchased 3 books, and would be a waste of money to switch to another app.

If you are rooted, you can convert it to a user app instead of system and it'll stay. That's what I did and I've never actually been to the us

I see, thanks, just going to stay stock for a month. I've always rooted my phones on day one and never experienced pure stock before, plus its different with a nexus, there's no sd card, so all my content would get wiped, nearly filled my 16 gb, and could imagine how long everything would take to put back.

Little Tip mate, stop uninstalling and re-downloading etc.
Try downloading a File Explorer e.g. - ES File Explorer.
Find the App in the File Explorer, long press it and click "Create Shortcut" BAM!
Hope this helps !

I'm still on stock too, I just unlocked and flashed su and bb for the little extra functionality.
Sadly, unlocking will do a complete wipe. But I picked up something about rooting without unlocking, using a method from the galaxy. Not sure it'll work tho, at least one person here suggested that it should. Might be worth looking up if you feel books is worth the trouble

Original sw on nexus s

I was wondering if you guys the following software on your new phone installed by default.
Qik
App brain
Skype
Quadrant
Speed test
Because when I got my phone from best buy it was already there and I am wondering if I got a used phone.
Sent from my Nexus S
None of those apps were preinstalled on the 2 NS's I bought on 12.16. Looks like someone played with/used it before you got it.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I agree with Herr Bauhaus, app brain alone proves the phone's been played with before you got it.
Disappointing to hear that Best Buy is slipping returned phones into the "new" bin. If nothing else, they should have given you an "open box" discount. I'd take it back and demand that, or a new one. Turn it on before leaving the store and make sure nothing on the phone.
Thanks...this is disappointing. Shame on you best buy
Sent from my Nexus S
just some more confirmation, none of those apps should of been on the phone, you got a used device. Take it back and demand a new one, also as someone else said, open it in store.
if it still has the film over the screen telling you how to turn it on then thats a good sign but best to still turn it on and make sure no other apps are there.

He never said his wifi passwords were restored, and if it were Google restoring apps via the backup feature from an old phone, wouldn't it restore ALL his old apps? I doubt those were the only apps he had installed on his old phone, if he even had one...I guess we should ask him (did you, OP?).

It will restore as many as it can, depending on a couple variables. One variable being reception. If you are turning on your phone for the first time in a location with crappy signal, you will probably only get a partial, if any, app restore. I speak from experience here.

And the rest will never come in after the first attempt? Not a very reliable system, then.
I remember it working for me once with my Nexus 1 way back when, but it's never worked reliably when switching to any other phone.
Of course also on the app restore issue there will be a notification letting you know that X number of apps were restored (or if there was a partial restore as well, I believe).
Whatever happened to the OP?

There's no restore notification as far as I know.
My apps and settings didn't restore when I replaced my nexus s. I have backup my data and automatic restore enabled, and did on the previous phone too.
in the end it's quite clear the OP got a "used" phone from the "new" phone pile from BestBuy
it might have even been from some of us here in XDA that found some defect and sent it back (j/k)
if i were you, i'd got back to complain at BB, and get a new unit
as mentioned by the guys above, you should get a WELCOME screen, touch here to begin your setup wizard.... blah blah blah, and no weird software should be installed
you can also go into Phone> Settings> About, and check on the usage status

That's odd, I always get a restore notification letting me know how many apps were reinstalled after changing devices or wiping/restoring.
Thanks guys for the answers. Quick update. I went back to BB to replace the phone and got a new one. No more extra apps.
I also noticed that this time the screen was no longer a finger print magnet either. They must have cleaned the previous phone and stripped the anti-smudge coating.
Problem: This time around though, I have a problem with the back button being stuck sometimes -- checking on xda forums and google forums, it looks like this is a hardware issue. Guess this phone is going back too. Too bad.
Maybe i'll just wait and see what happens to the GT-i9023.....
No for me. I did not own an android phone before (well, except for the 2 weeks I owned a Vibrant last summer), but I never had Skype or Qik installed, so it is not possible that this is a restore.
This was a used phone from Best Buy.

The updater being DMClient right?
One thing to keep an eye on (I plan to disable OTA's on my two tablets) is battery life.
There are supposedly some instances where the system may think the OTA update is corrupt and will continuously try to re-download it in the bg affecting battery life. It's still worth attempting IMHO, just a tip though to keep an eye on your battery, if disabling the OTA affects it for you, you could unfreeze the dmclient service and use a different workaround to stop the OTAs
-For freezing, after looking around, these three apps seem to be best suited - Titanium Backup pro (obviously), AntTek & Gemini App managers (free)
I'll be Rooting then freezing OTAs on my Prime (ww .15) and rebooting it to ensure it doesn't softbrick. If unsuccessful I can flash a blob/format no probs, if successful, I'll root my Nxs7 JB, rinse repeat and report back
--
Successfully performed all tasks on the Prime (hooray no OTAs!!), it's rooted with frozen DMClient, no firmware download prompts since the service was stopped and frozen.
I have rebooted a few times to ensure it is not soft bricked and the App remains frozen
I will be doing my Nexus next since I do not foresee any brick issues, all I need to do is simply look into rooting it.
edit: seeing the several methods all require unlocking to exploit root capability, I'm going to wait out my DOA period (since Ive only had this tablet for 2 days lol) before I unlock the bootloader.
The methods discussed though work perfect for ICS, if you've unlocked and root then turning OTA's off is a sinch, with very minimal risk of a softbrick IMO
Thanks, I will try freezing with TB.

Just to let you know, everything's going awesome with my Prime, initially when I downgraded it, the OTA tried to download (i stopped it at 66 percent) and I just kept the wifi off while I rooted and disabled DMClient.
The bonus of freezing the process/service is when another update occurs ours should continue to block the FOTA, some other methods like modifying the build prop only work until a new update is out.
I'll definitely be unlocking and rooting my nexus to stop ota's

And what would that file be? Where is it located?
Disable using autostarts works...
I had my nexus 7 nagging me constantly to update too... rooted and heavily customized stock rom, different kernel, a lot of system files I altered... I really am not overly concerned about doing an update that might screw with any one of those components and having to go through the whole process of getting it where I want again.
I couldn't find this DMClient you guys are speaking of.
Here's how I did it:
Install Autostarts app.
Go to "After Startup"
Scroll down until you see "Google Services Framework"
There should be several of them. For me it was the third one. Touch it and read the bottom of the popup to find out. It will say "Receiver com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService.....(you get the point)
Disable it. Done...
I don't know if there are any other repercussions to disabling this.. I just know it's not nagging me, and everything works still.
DMclient is a service, it's the most ideal thing to freeze since when stopped the OS will not even attempt to check of OTAs or attempt to download anything, plus it does not modify the OS in any significant way (i.e, editing build.props) so you can undo it with ease if you want. All you need is Root to be able to freeze the service.
I'm not arguing about how to do it... I just couldn't find dmclient , as one of the others stated as well. Just sharing what worked for me.
I don't know if it matters, but it's stock jb 4.1.1 on the nexus 7. If somebody knows where I can locate this dmclient in it, I'd probably feel better about doing that as well. Don't like the idea of it downloading or doing anything in the background if I don't need it to. I'm rather anal about background processes.. at least I have been in my other OS's so far... getting more familiar with the innards of android now... lol
Are we sure it's in this version? I don't even see it in ps in terminal. Unless the process I disabled with autostarts stopped it.
I might enable it again tomorrow and reboot and check ps again.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
You're right, I checked my nexus 4.1.2 and the service isn't there, the All area doesnt show everything but even using apps that show all apps/services it doesnt show up. :/
I checked my TF Prime which is 4.1.1 now (sigs outdated) and the service is there, it mustn't exist in AOSP builds or something
It seems as if Google has done a lot of little different things to the OS on the nexus 7. Some of the system components I've messed with relating to sound don't have any effect... I think they left some files in place but are utilizing something different for configuration of sound.
I see every mobile OS now is taking proprietary steps... I still gotta stick with Google though, because they are so heavily involved in the open source community and do a great deal to help the development community.
Next tablet is going to have top have more options for me... better usb support, hdmi out.. the ability to use a headset with Mic connection.. sd card... I am, however, extremely happy with my nexus 7 purchase. For the price and the performance.. can't go wrong there. They are practically giving away the 8 gb models.. barely more than cost of construction. The 16 gb ones aren't exactly a ripoff either..

Note 3 Keyboard

Is anyone else seeing a Note 3 Keyboard listed as installed AT THE BOTTOM of your "All" list in google play..... but not showing as installed in your "Installed" list? I am not able to find it anywhere on my device and Samsung on live chat said that they never issued a OTA with a note 3 Keyboard. This is spyware. I can not get rid of it. No matter what I do it comes back after a day or two.
Don't see that. Stock rooted mf9.
This crap won't go away. It keeps coming back. Rooted or not. I never see a notification. It just appears suddenly. I have appnotifier and it shows nothing being installed. I just appears magically. I hate this ****. Whatever it is is deeply embedded in my phone. I notice that when I do a wipe in recovery my data partition doesn't mount. Can you tell me if yours does please? You don't have to wipe anything just see if you can mount and unmount the data partition. Mine says unmounted and will not mount at all. I think this might be part of the problem. The data wipe doesn't really happen, and this Keyboard is in that part that isn't getting wiped. That is the only thing I can think on how it keeps coming back no matter what I do. PIT files and numerous firmwares, and nothing removes it permanently. If you could tell me if yours mounts...That would help me a lot. Thanks

I talked with Samsung. They said it is not a legit Samsung app and it was never rolled out to any S4 OTA or included in any OEM firmware. I think I know where it came from. Did you ever flash firmware from Galaxys4root.com? That is just a hunch of mine. May not be the source at all. But after I flashed that firmware I noticed lots of extra b.s. going on and found it. It shows on my phone, but not when I look at my play orders on my computer. Samsung said it's not really linked to Google play at all. That is why you can't leave a review or report the app. Try that and you'll see. The creator was cleaver enough to give it the appearance of a legit Google apps so that it will install on your phone without being blocked. Have you ever looked on your device for it? I can't find anything and my appnotifier and lookout never pick it up. It just magically appears once I root or allow install of apps from unknown sources.
Can anyone tell me if maybe my SIM card needs to be changed? Like is it possible that this Note 3 Keyboard keeps coming back because of the personal information or MEID contained on my phone? LIke, I did a full reflash with PIT files, and pulled the battery and did a factory reset from recovery before I let it boot. It still came back after about a day with no updates at all.
Would some of you more skilled people give me some ideas to try and maybe explain or suggest how this can be happening? Like is it possible that a new partition has been created that does not get rewritten with PIT file and firmware? Please... I want this **** off my phone! Any suggestions are gonna be appreciated and tested. I know somebody has an idea of what is happening here....Thanks for reading this.

All I know is that I talked to Samsung via live chat and they said that it is not affiliated with Samsung in any way and a Note 3 keyboard should not be on any Galaxy S4. Go to live chat yourselves and ask questions. Sprint told me that I can get a new one on my warranty but there is a $50 surcharge. The Tech at sprint said it's not affiliated with Google play. It just has some of the API's to trick the phone into letting it install. I don't kow for sure where it came from. I've flashed so many ROM's and firmwares that it is impossible to pinpoint it. I got a feeling that a lot of people will find it if they look for it. At least the ones that are flashers will anyways.
I've tried deleting everything but when the new ROM loads and I look through the files, I'm still finding folders and files with week old dates on them. I'm not sure how that is happening. I'm dying to get to the bottom of this. Help me keep this thread bumped so more people will see it. Hopefully someone will give us the right info to get rid of it.
I see the same thing I'm on stock.

I would say they are full of it. That app is from Samsung. I have a friend with a Note 3 and it updated itself using that app. Now why it is showing on the S4 is probably just some glitch in there programming, or because they are working on a 4.3 update for the S4. I also have it on mine. Once the new update comes out for the S4 I suspect it will have the new keyboard and the app will then work.
Delete the Samsung keyboard lol. I did.
Well I went to the mall yesterday and a friend of mine has a note 3 and he has that keyboard as well, also the link on the playstore takes you to the korean or japanese samsung website. I am beggining to think is just a glitch. I also have the stock samsung keyboard removed and use swiftkey.

I'm certain that somebody has exploited the keyboard. It wasn't on my phone when it was stock unrooted right from the store. It only showed up after flashing back to "stock" firmware. In which one instance I was seeing lots of bogus crap going on. Apps where getting flashed right over the top of the little green android. In the applications manager you could see the little green Android behind numerous app icons. They all had a little something extra. My phone was doing all sorts of neat crap on it's own. Somebody had complete control of my device. That came from galaxys4root.com Flash that **** and you'll see for yourself. Everything was tainted. The play store, the play services It was like it was in a war, it would have two updates for the same thing showing in pull down notification window. One real, one bogus. The first time I flashed it, I just hit updtae on everything. When I noticed all the funny stuff, I re-flashed it and paid attention to all the updates. All of the Samsung apps were tainted, It would go back and forth updating and then updating back to the other. Thats what made me notice the differences. It kept updating the same apps over and over. That is when I noticed that they were different.

I did. It still shows as installed. I cut everything out. Even everything that had input devices in the name. It still shows as installed. When I factory reset it is not there for anywhere from 12 hours to 24 hours. My phone is fast as hell, scrolls like a champ and the battery lasts all day on one charge. Like 16 to 18 hours. As soon as that keyboard shows up it slows down, acts funny and gets laggy. The battery is disappearing like crazy. I have to charge it twice a day to make it till I get home. It might be a legit app for many, but I'm positive that someone has exploited the app and is using it in firmware as a information collector, and it does not go away no matter what I do. I'm wondering if it is in my efs partition... if that is even possible. What I know is that with Android, almost anything is possible. If you can think it, someone can code it.

[Q] Reboots

Hey Ladies and Gents,
I've updated my Note3 to the latest Update and installed Scotts Clean Rom 1.5 and it ran great until I started restoring my apps. Once all apps were restored (from the Play store, not from my Titanium BU Archive) the phone started rebooting and was stuck in a loop, couldn't get it back to the homescreen. Googled and found that some folks say "Remove your SD card and turn off the constant Wi-Fi scanning" but that didn't help, so I wiped and re-installed the Rom....all was well...until I restored my Apps again. I don't know which App could be causing this, they're all from the Play Store and all of my apps are Paid Apps (Don't like Ads in my apps so I pay for them if they have a Pay App available). Just wiped again and haven't restored any apps, but rebooted the device myself about 5 times, everything works.
Have any of you ever seen this before? Most of my Apps are Camera and Photo Editing Apps. I'm not going to restore anything because I need my phone work work, so I'll only attach my Personal and Work E-mails to it, but that's not going to fly for long. Apparently the Boot-Looping issue is known http://www.sammobile.com/2013/10/17/some-galaxy-note-3-units-experiencing-boot-loops/
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

That'll be my next step....I have over 450 paid apps, so I'm going to weed out the apps that I don't use all the time, and focus on the ones I do use. It will be time consuming.....

LOL...I'm an App-o-holic.
I just downloaded another ROM for the new update, and I'll load all of my apps with that to see if it's isolated by ROM's or Apps. It's a snowy wonderland outside, so there's nothing better to do than play with my phone and figure this out.
Ok....this is odd. I've tried a different ROM and installed ALL of my apps, no issues, no rebooting.....so one of my apps doesn't like to play with Scotts Clean Rom.....hmmmmm. Seeing how there are only two ROM's available that are for the new OTA update, I'm going to stick with this ROM and install Scotts into another slot and then go one by one, and see why/how/which app is not playing nice.

LG V20 on Sprint - hanging/freezing/performance issues

My first 5-6 days with this phone were pretty solid.
Now, once or twice a day the phone will just start hanging, and eventually freeze, requiring a battery pull.
This will happen randomly. No particular app that I can pinpoint is contributing.
I have noticed it seems to have occurred some times when either an email or text is arriving.
It also has happened without an email or text coming in.
Of course it may be an app. I am dreading a factory reset, but think I need to. Then will load the apps fresh from the Play store instead of transferring them from my previous Note 4 like I did initially.
I searched online regarding this issue....there are only 2 YouTube videos from users. One said he just had a bad phone, exchanged it, and is now fine. Other comments pointed to Facebook app vs using the Samsung 256 gig memory card (from Note 7 owners, which is what I am actually doing).
Any tips on how to stop this vs how to capture what is causing this is appreciated.
FWIW: using the BlueMail and Textra for default apps.
I've noticed this too using the sprint version. I have to reboot the phone to fix it

Sometimes it is hung up so much I cant reboot and am forced to take off my case and pull the battery. There has never been an overheating issue for me.

Have the same problem. Am on T-mobile. Hopefully an update to 7.1 comes soon.
Any word when 7.1 will happen?

My phone [Sprint] also does this. The entire phone locks up requiring a battery pull. Hope to find a solution soon.

Same thing started happening to me - week 3 with T-Mobile variant.
Thanks for heads-up on this potential issue, I'm on day 2 of this device, and it seems fine thus far, but I'll be on the look out...perhaps a reboot once a week like the Samsung devices will help.
I'm still unhappy about Sprint leaving out the lg gallery app, and the content lock with this app. I tried the side loaded lg gallery apk, and although it installs okay, the lock feature doesn't work!

Never had this happen, on sprint, had the phone since before the official release
Am on T-Mobile. I was having to do a battery pull once or twice a day. I gave up and did a reset and reinstall. Never had an LG phone before and tried out the Backup and Restore program. Worked fine although I didn't try reinstalling any of my Exchange accounts for fear of corruption or deletion of emails, calendar events, contacts.
Was happy with the speed of the reinstall. Especially with the sms. I have about 16,000 sms and mms. When I got this phone I used that and it took almost 6 hours to restore those messages. With the LG backup and restore, everything took less than 3 hours.

Probably after it is available as a final for Nexus devices...AKA 2017. Even Nexus phones are beta-ing until 2017 probably.
I've had my Sprint model since day 2 and it has never done this.
Looks like it might have been Lux and its persistent notification that was responsible for the slowdowns. I disabled it and everything seems must faster.
Lux? As in the app to control brightness?

Never had any lag or freezing on mine either. Have had since sprint release day, didn't restore or transfer anything over. Everything was setup as new, just transferred sd card with music and pictures.

Yes Lux the brightness app. I noticed the worst lag when pulling down the notification drawer and thought it might be related to Lux's brightness widget, which seems to have proved to be the case. Disabling its notification privileges and haven't seen any lag all day.
Never had even a moment of hesitation since owning the phone (Verizon).
