Hello All:
This is my first post here but just reading around has solved many problems for me already. However, my phone (sprint mogul 8600) has been misbehaving and even a hard reset did not solve this problem.
My problem is that the stupid thing won't stay asleep, ruining my battery life and sanity. Is there a way to set it so that it will only wake on active decisions (incoming text, incoming call) and me pushing the power button? I've cruised option after option but I haven't been able to find anything useful.
It still functions properly when it should wake up, it just seems to wake up every few minutes on my desk and i think i have an incoming something to deal with. In the end I have just stopped paying attention and have missed lots of calls because of it.
My apologies if there is a faq that goes over this already, I looked but could not find.
Thanks in advance
Battery life goes down approximately 50% per 10 hrs because the phone turns on as if someone hit the power button at irregular intervals. Is the phone SUPPOSED to be able to turn on for reasons other than incoming messages or using the power button? Its driving me crazy, I can't even go out for a day because it will run out of battery.
Are you running a custom rom or stock rom? If stock, is the most up to date from your carrier? After you did the hard reset, did you test it before installing any cab files? It's possible one of the apps you are installing may cause this.
If it's the stock rom and you are installing nothing, I would say it's a defective phone.
I know on an old PDA I had years back at midnight every night it would turn on, it would do maintenance on my scheduler and then turn back off, but haven't seen my phone ever do this during normal hours.
BTC
It has to be software on that rom or additional installed by you. If you haven't installed any software you might want to try flashing a custom rom and see if that takes care of it.
i have had the same problems with my ppc6800 and blackjack 2, i think it has to do with the changing networks... on my drive home from mass to maine it will do it in about 5 spots anyways consistantly. in my hotel in mass i get crappy reception and itll do it every now and then. this has been an issue with both phones. bugs the hell outta me on my trip home cus itll light up, then i grab it to figure out why and theres nothing... learned to live with it
I performed a hard reset after continued trouble with this. It will come on at least 1 time per hour, and as often as every 5 minutes, with absolutely nothing done to it short of initial calibration/data entry. It will also do this sitting on my desk, not moving or anything.
I suppose I could try a custom rom, but I fear I am opening pandora's box, as I am told these phones are on backorder if i happen to brick mine. Any recommendations for a new ROM to try?
This is normal.
Is this sufficient problem to get it replaced? A hard reset and nothing else and problem persists.
It's a win mobile "feature" since the early WinCE days. Every Palm-size/WinCE/WinMO device I've owned turned itself on from time to time. Now, it's blamed on network changes, mostly going in and out of EVDO coverage. When these were simple PDA's, it was blamed on internal housekeeping. If you corner a MS rep on the issue, they will blame the hardware and outside software vendors. I never believed them. Either get used to it or buy a device other than a WinMo based, it will never ever be fixed!
BTW, I'm in my basement where I get less than an ideal signal and my Mogul has turned on and off 3 times while I was typing this.
I have my phone sitting next to me in the cradle all night long, 2-3 hours before I go to bed I turn out the lights to either view my laptop easier or watch TV, if my phone was turning on I would know it because I would have bright light in my eyes.
So I would say it's not as common as you described in the 2-3 times while composing the email. Mine might turn on at midnight, tho I am usually asleep by then, so I can't say for sure, but the only time it turns on (that I know of) is when I receive a text message or a phone call. Emails don't wake up my phone. And I get 20-30 emails a day.
I am on a 1X only network, no EVDO here yet, so it could be an issue with EVDO, in my phone settings I have an option for Service Tone, that makes a beeping sound when I lose or regain service, might try turning that on and see if it's beeping when the phone is turning on. If so, it's a signal issue.

I have this problem too and hate it. Every time I come out of the subway the phone turns on in my pocket. I cant drive at night with the phone facing up on the dash because it turns on every couple of mins. It's completely annoying, kills the battery and launches tons of programs, every once in a while it makes calls too. I would be very happy to get this "feature" taken off my phone!
B
WinMo devices turning on all by themselves is the reason there are so many screen lock programs available. If you've got a WM device and plan to carry it in a confined pocket (like your pants) check out S2U2 or throttlelock. Your phone turns on when leaving the subway because it's aquiring a signal, it probably turned on while in the train while searching for signal too. While driving, you're probably passing in and out of 3G coverage which will also turn the device on. If you stay in a solid signal area, the phone will stay off for the most part, but that does negate the whole mobile thing a bit. The center of my basement where my home theater is gets a inconsistant 3G signal. My Mogul will turn on and off and kill the battery in a few hours. My wifes Palm, my friends BB's and iphones won't turn on once. Once again, the issue of WM/PocketPC/WinCE turning on for no apparent reason has been a c ommon complaint for years, at least to the Casio E105 days when I started on my WM journey. Since MS has never addressed the issue, I doubt they ever will.
I have never had the phone random come on from sleep. Leaving and entering coverage doesn't change that. I say you have something in the rom causing the problem or a program running in the background

You've never taken the phone out of a pocket or holster to find it already on? My 6700 on VZW did and I think I ran every ROM developed for it at one time or another, each of my 3 Moguls running various OEM and custom ROM's did/does. I've heard similar complaints from coworkers running various
WM devices. A friend I take the train with daily complained about this with his AT&T Tilt too. Both my non phone Axims (x5 & x51) occasionally turned on as did my Toshiba E805, Casio e100, e105 and e115. Every WinCE based device forum I have participated in over the years has featured complaints about WM turning on with no user interaction. Obviously, it's not a deal breaker for me, but it does happen...a lot. The issue in my basement is the extreme of the problem, move the phone towards the exterior walls and the phone reverts to only turning on and quickly off occasionally. Another example. When traveling by LIRR to Penn Station the phone will stay off even when entering the river tunnel ad traveling under Manhattan. At some point when I exit the station, the phone turns itself on. Since I'm walking in rush hour crowds, I've never tried to find at which exact point my Mogul turns on, but it's always on when I get my coffee in Borders Cafe.
I have never taken it out of my pocket and have it been turned on. It is always in sleep mode.
This also happens to me, i own a mogul, and this is really and extremely annoying.
i have test it for few months and this is my conclusion.
As you guys said already just wait for few min and it will turn on the screen, but also when i shake it and when you hit it.
it really is a battery killer.

If it's turning on when you shake it, you probably have a hardware issue.
Picked up a brand new Sprint HTC Hero on Monday (10/12/9) and within about a day it had stopped working entirely and was swapped out by a Sprint Repair Technician for another brand new one. I wanted to share the issues/experience.
Having spent an entire day fiddling about with the device, I noticed a couple of processes freaking out and needing to be forcibly shut down. I found out that this was because it had 0 internal memory left. I think that this was because I set up my gmail app to sync absolutely all my email to my phone, which obviously took up all the memory.
Without really taking too much time to think, I just decided to do a hard reset of my phone and restore it to factory settings. All seemed to go fine.
But the next day I was noticing that I wasn't not able to receive text messages. I was still able to make/receive call, and send texts, just not receive texts.
Everything worked perfectly prior to the reset: could make and receive both calls and texts, browse the internet etc. - the only thing that wasn't quite working was the bluetooth connection to my car: it was able to pair fine, but anytime it tried to do anything e.g. make a call/play music via bluetooth, the connection would die. However, a bluetooth connection to just a regular headset worked flawlessly.
I spoke to Sprint Customer Service on & off for about 2 hours. They tried refreshing the text messaging service on their end a few times. They also had me check that my phone was correctly programmed: the MDN number had actually reverted back to the temp number I was given (I was porting a number over from TMob). However, even after correcting this MDN number, it still did not work.
I was tempted to just go and get a replacement from the Sprint Store, but there was a repair center about 5 minutes away. Very helpful guy there (who actually ended up staying an hour after his shift was supposed to end) took a look at it.
He was able to replicate the problem exactly as described above. He decided to transfer the number to a different phone (a palm treo I think), and all the test text messages came flooding down. Although this would point to an issue with the phone, this could not rule out a network issue (for reasons that he did explain, but I can't quite remember). He then tried a hard reset himself: didnt do anything.
Finally, he told me that he had a new Hero sitting in the back. He tried setting up this new phone with my number and it worked perfectly.
So in short, my phone is heading to Kansas City (Sprint HQ from what I understand) to be broken down and examined.
Sprint repair guy said he had never seen anything like it before.
Want to also mention that both the Sprint Store salesmen and repair guy were the most helpful people Ive ever met. My salesman was actually on vacation: when i called the store to report the issue, they called him and he called me...very impressive. The repair guy also went above and beyond to keep me informed on the progress (as I was waiting while he worked on it), not to mention him working overtime.
I literally ported over last week from Tmobile and have been blown away by their service.
Just wanted to share the story. Feel free to get in touch if you want me to elaborate on anything.
UPDATE:
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.
Contacted the sprint repair tech. He says that sprint techs have a private internal forum and that the issue has been reported in the past (one of the reports was from a sprint employee who experienced identical problems (on Oct 8th - prior to launch).
From what Ive been told, the internal memory being full is the first symptom of the issue and that android processes begin to be forcibly shut down, and then txt messages cannot be received. Apparantly Sprint/HTC have an idea of what may be causing the issue but have not been more specific than that on the internal forum.
I'm getting my Hero swapped out for a brand new one (for the 3rd time) after work today. I've been advised to keep high-end feature use to a minimum (e.g. google contact/mail/calendar sync etc) until he has heard back from his development team.
Your title is quite misleading. Still happy it worked out for you in the end.
Yah your title is pretty terrible IMO for the post content.
Glad it worked out for you. I had a similar issue and had to have the device re-provisioned which didn't work, reset the device after the re-provision and it worked without issues since.
I have had mine for a while and installed around 60 apps on it yesterday all while surfing the net and texting. Before I went to bed I power cycled my phone and it was searching for service. Didn't have time to troubleshoot it until today noticed it was force closing several different things randomly and said I was out of memory. I uninstalled several programs and had around 30 mb free and still random force closings and no service.
Ended up doing a factory reset which seemed to fix the issue as I can receive calls and surf the market and internet but I'm not receiving text. As a matter of fact people said they were responding to my texts last night yet I never received any of them despite being able to surf the market and play games on my phone.
So now I'm wondering if my hero is jacked up as well and I'm wondering if it's related to using up all the memory on the device but I'd think doing a factory reset should have fixed everything but it seems like something isn't getting fixed correctly as I just had someone send me a text to test my theory and I haven't received it yet I can still do everything else on my phone.
If you are auto closing everything without setting up exceptions you will have issues. My radio stack became unresponsive after auto closing everything and I had to go through the system files that were running one by one to place them on the exclusion list otherwise it would keep happening. Now no issues.
I had the same issues with not getting txt msgs at first. I told the sprint rep and he simply tokd me to reset my phone...and it works great since then
Update to Original Message - Brand New Replacement Hero w/ Identical Issues
Yeah, the title may have initially been misleading, but it turns out its spot on.
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.

I will keep you all posted (if any of you are at all interested). I never usually post my boring issues on forums, but I thought this was pretty interesting given how new the CDMA Hero is.
Yes pllease keep us updated as i had the same issues as you did until i resetted my phone. I hope an update will fix the issue

were you able to receive text messages after the reset? if so your problem is different to mine as a reset doesn't fix it at all

Ya after reset my phone has been fine.
3rd Update - 3rd Replacement Hero
So I've just picked up my 3rd phone. The previous 2 are being sent off to Sprint HQ so they can determine exactly what is going on.
Apparently (as I think I mentioned previously), Sprint HQ have a very good idea as to whats going on but a) need to confirm it and b) wont tell the Sprint repair tech what they're thinking. In an email that HQ sent to the tech, they said:
“We should be hearing about a resolution shortly and I can check in with him later on today. I would simply let your customer know that this is the highest priority at development and they are close to a resolution.”
In the mean time, I've been advised not to install any non-standard apps i.e. anything but facebook/google. The tech has a feeling its down to one of the 2 memory management apps I used, Advanced TaskKiller Free and TaskKiller Free. Apparently the Sprint employee that I mentioned earlier that had this issue was also using a TaskKiller app. I was also advised not to set up any Microsoft exchange accounts as some problems have been reported, but I dont think its anything really to do with this (however, I'm following his advice all the same).
Should be hearing something from the tech guy early next week and will post the feedback.
mine is doing the exact same thing!!! i thought is was that nobody has texted me in the last couple of days but i was dead wrong..... im gonna try to uninstall task killer free and reboot to see if thats the problem.... if not, then back to the Sprint Store
Thats what happens when Sprint decides to patch up Android with CDMA support rather than waite for native in 1.6
You guys aren't just killing all the tasks when you are running these programs are you?

I had to reset my phone twice today just to get the internet connection back. Android is a joke or maybe its just sprint. Im moving back to winmo as soon as hd2 is here in the US.
I can assure you it is not Android, but Sprints implementation of Android on the Hero. Hopefully we'll get a 1.6 update soon. Hang in there, it'll be worth the wait.
i hope so. i really miss bluetooth transfer and exchange server is constantly on i want to be able to set peek times. i also want me notifications to repeat until i acknowledge them. missed call only works or missed calls and sms.

I have reset my phone three times now and still not working. I can assure you this has nothing to do with the network as I'm still able to receive calls and emails hence not the network but what I believe to be HTC. Let me clarify, I believe I have either installed an app that corrupted my ability to receive sms text or somehow messed my phone up however it's the phone itself that's not erasing all info when I do a reset like it should.
I still have audio files from sound boards I installed when I initially got the phone that are still present after four factory resets that shouldn't be. This is a phone issue and not a network issue. Sadly the phone is so new there isn't a rom I can flash to that would fix the issue as whatever I did to my phone a factory reset isn't fixing it. It's that simple, if HTC made it to where a factory reset put the phone back to the original state then I wouldn't have this issue or files present from 3-4 factory resets ago....
This is frustrating :O
I've had the phone for a few months, only used it for 2 weeks then put it back in the box with plans to resell it. Dad needed a new phone for his job so i decided to give it to him and every day for the past week ive gotten at least one phone call from him with problems. He is extremely new to smart phones but I never had a single issue with this phone prior to giving it to him. For some reason he will receive text messages or voice mail and sees the notification icons up on the notification bar but when he goes to pull the bar down it does nothing. The only way to resolve this issue is to restart the phone then all of a sudden the pull-down starts to function as it should. The phone is completely stock out the box i didn't feel the need to touch anything or have to root it for any reason.
He had to go to AT&T to get a sim card for it and the people there basically wanted to run him out of the store and not even touch the phone because they do not sell it so not a single person wanted to even help him out even though he just dropped more money into their pockets by upgrading his plan to a smart phone plan. before i gave him the phone all i did was a factory reset to wipe out any of my data on the phone so it was clean and like new for him.
Im at a loss because the whole time i used the phone i had no issues and since the day he got it he has had nothing but problems. I chalked this up to user error but its not because when he gave it to me to see if i could figure out why things were acting weird the only thing i could think to do was restart the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this may be happening and/or how to go about fixing it and not making him regret ever having to get a smart phone much less this N4?
New paragraph!
What messaging apps are you using? You could always download the toolkit and flash the stock factory image again.
I would try another factory reset just to make sure things didn't go haywire during the reset you already did. I have had a bad reset with a phone before.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
yeah im gonna have to get with my dad and fool with the phone more. Its hard to troubleshoot something when he lives 45mins away and calls me with problems while im at work.
ONCE AGAIN the whole phone is stock so that would lead me to believe that the stock messaging app is being used. I will talk him through doing a reset again and see how that works out for him. From what he told me the only app hes even installed outside of everything that comes on the phone was Map Quest, which i told him he shouldn't need because Google Maps is already loaded on. So first im going to have him uninstall that from the phone as well as from his downloaded apps list in the play store and see if that changes anything.
So I was doing cardio at the gym with my rooted verizon s5 in my pocket. It was only for about 30 minutes and I checked my phone before I started. Once I finished, I checked my phone, only to see the set-up menu asking me what language I wanted, gmail account, etc. I have a lock screen on my phone, so I don't see how it could have pressed the right buttons to reset in my pocket even of the phone was turned on somehow. I had quite a few hours customizing it, so I'm pretty pissed. I did do a back-up and according to root checker I still have root access, so I guess I'll just do that even though the back-up is like a month old. I'm just wondering what the hell happened, and more importantly, how I prevent it in the future. I was getting constant requests for updates and security reports, but always dismissed them because I was told that was normal. Thanks in advance and let me know if you need anymore info.

Samsung pocket reset explained. ****ED ME OVER
So about 3 months ago i was playing ultimate Frisbee on a school trip with some friends with my S5 in my pocket. After about 30 minutes of play i heard my phone making a strange noise. I pulled it out and realized i was operating in Chinese on a screen that was seemingly a setup screen. All my phone data had been lost due to a factory reset. I was pissed but it wasn't that big of a deal because i had gotten the phone a week earlier. So I reinstalled the few apps I had, re downloaded my contacts, and didn't look into to it much. But today, four months later, I was doing the same exact thing, playing ultimate Frisbee with some friends, and it happened again. But this time I had a 32 GB SD card in that was nearly full of important pictures, videos, files, folders, documents and schoolwork. What I now know is those retards at Samsung made it so the phone thinks the SD card is part of the phone AND IT PERMANENTLY FORMATTED IT. I was am and still livid that those ****tards have no way to fix this problem what so ever. The phone has a defense mechanism that resets the phone after too many incorrect password attempts and the phone against my leg in my pocket did the ****ing trick! Me - "So there is no way to recover the data?" Dumb Samsung ****head - "No its a permanent reset that protects the phone from intruders". How Stupid do you have to be to create something like that, that can be triggered by so many other means than an intruder, AND HAVE NO WAY TO FIX IT. I am now ****ED by Samsung and never purchasing a phone from them again. DON'T BUY SAMSUNG THEY ARE ****. And don't buy Apple either because they are WORSE. Hopefully this helps someone hate Samsung a little more because I'm SCREWED.

HI guys,
I've been really stupid and lost my Samsung galaxy S5 , I have no find my phone app installed and my battery seems to have died as it doesn't ring out. Cut the very long story short.
I have 3 options to where my phone can be -
Club
Car
Field.
I left the Club as I was dj-ing Sunday morning at about 6:30 . I've driven home crashed / flipped my car onto a field. . Nobody was around I looked in my car for my phone before leaving it and I couldn't seem to find it. The club was its last night open and the owner returns tomorrow so I may be able to look in the club and find it touch wood.
the car has been recovered I have gone to where the car has been recovered to look inside their and turned it upside I cannot find it in the car. Ive gone back to the field where I crashed as the window may have been open during the crash and I cannot find it on the field. Only place ive not looked yet is the club.
My phone was ringing sunday & Monday morning. Now its going straight through to voice mail . And am stupid because when it was ringing if I had known I could have remotely installed apps to help me using google .
Is their anything I can do at this moment in time to possibly help me find my phone whilst its switched off?
thanks
If it's turned off, that's like asking people online where your TV remote is
I had the same problem.
Hi, I had a similar problem (beer and beer) with my previous phone, and I got the GPS ON always, (because I play Ingress), so I used the Android Device Manager to trace it out.
Couldn't find it out, because it was turned off by the new owner close to the Bar where I lost it.
Nightmare , I will just buy a new phone use android device manager to wipe it and barr the phone .
If I'm not mistaken I think android device manager logs the phone location before it goes off. Did you at least try to check ADM already? Maybe it could give you clues. If so then go check the bar and if it's not there then sorry buddy but you lost it.

Am I correct say,
if I wait lets say 10 days without blocking my phone or simccard within those 10 days if somebody turns on my phone with my simcard in straight away it should connect to the internet and at least that way I know if it is being used elsewhere. so I could technically monitor some kind of activity on my phone.? on Android device manager ? I mean I have already sent a message to the phone with a passcode but of course this needs internet access which is why I m thinking not to block the phone just yet.
am trying to get the best chance of receiving some kind of activity update from either ADM or Timeline ..
if am correct this must mean the only chance not to receive an update would be to take out simcard straight away and then wifi ? abut of course this means they can still go through my phone ect just without internet. and of course to wipe the phone clean and then use it as normal for my ADM or Timeline not to be updated. so its pretty much a strct process to prevent a change on ADM I would say?
