Sprint HTC Hero Complete Failure - Hero, G2 Touch General

Picked up a brand new Sprint HTC Hero on Monday (10/12/9) and within about a day it had stopped working entirely and was swapped out by a Sprint Repair Technician for another brand new one. I wanted to share the issues/experience.
Having spent an entire day fiddling about with the device, I noticed a couple of processes freaking out and needing to be forcibly shut down. I found out that this was because it had 0 internal memory left. I think that this was because I set up my gmail app to sync absolutely all my email to my phone, which obviously took up all the memory.
Without really taking too much time to think, I just decided to do a hard reset of my phone and restore it to factory settings. All seemed to go fine.
But the next day I was noticing that I wasn't not able to receive text messages. I was still able to make/receive call, and send texts, just not receive texts.
Everything worked perfectly prior to the reset: could make and receive both calls and texts, browse the internet etc. - the only thing that wasn't quite working was the bluetooth connection to my car: it was able to pair fine, but anytime it tried to do anything e.g. make a call/play music via bluetooth, the connection would die. However, a bluetooth connection to just a regular headset worked flawlessly.
I spoke to Sprint Customer Service on & off for about 2 hours. They tried refreshing the text messaging service on their end a few times. They also had me check that my phone was correctly programmed: the MDN number had actually reverted back to the temp number I was given (I was porting a number over from TMob). However, even after correcting this MDN number, it still did not work.
I was tempted to just go and get a replacement from the Sprint Store, but there was a repair center about 5 minutes away. Very helpful guy there (who actually ended up staying an hour after his shift was supposed to end) took a look at it.
He was able to replicate the problem exactly as described above. He decided to transfer the number to a different phone (a palm treo I think), and all the test text messages came flooding down. Although this would point to an issue with the phone, this could not rule out a network issue (for reasons that he did explain, but I can't quite remember). He then tried a hard reset himself: didnt do anything.
Finally, he told me that he had a new Hero sitting in the back. He tried setting up this new phone with my number and it worked perfectly.
So in short, my phone is heading to Kansas City (Sprint HQ from what I understand) to be broken down and examined.
Sprint repair guy said he had never seen anything like it before.
Want to also mention that both the Sprint Store salesmen and repair guy were the most helpful people Ive ever met. My salesman was actually on vacation: when i called the store to report the issue, they called him and he called me...very impressive. The repair guy also went above and beyond to keep me informed on the progress (as I was waiting while he worked on it), not to mention him working overtime.
I literally ported over last week from Tmobile and have been blown away by their service.
Just wanted to share the story. Feel free to get in touch if you want me to elaborate on anything.
UPDATE:
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.
Contacted the sprint repair tech. He says that sprint techs have a private internal forum and that the issue has been reported in the past (one of the reports was from a sprint employee who experienced identical problems (on Oct 8th - prior to launch).
From what Ive been told, the internal memory being full is the first symptom of the issue and that android processes begin to be forcibly shut down, and then txt messages cannot be received. Apparantly Sprint/HTC have an idea of what may be causing the issue but have not been more specific than that on the internal forum.
I'm getting my Hero swapped out for a brand new one (for the 3rd time) after work today. I've been advised to keep high-end feature use to a minimum (e.g. google contact/mail/calendar sync etc) until he has heard back from his development team.

Your title is quite misleading. Still happy it worked out for you in the end.

Yah your title is pretty terrible IMO for the post content.
Glad it worked out for you. I had a similar issue and had to have the device re-provisioned which didn't work, reset the device after the re-provision and it worked without issues since.

I have had mine for a while and installed around 60 apps on it yesterday all while surfing the net and texting. Before I went to bed I power cycled my phone and it was searching for service. Didn't have time to troubleshoot it until today noticed it was force closing several different things randomly and said I was out of memory. I uninstalled several programs and had around 30 mb free and still random force closings and no service.
Ended up doing a factory reset which seemed to fix the issue as I can receive calls and surf the market and internet but I'm not receiving text. As a matter of fact people said they were responding to my texts last night yet I never received any of them despite being able to surf the market and play games on my phone.
So now I'm wondering if my hero is jacked up as well and I'm wondering if it's related to using up all the memory on the device but I'd think doing a factory reset should have fixed everything but it seems like something isn't getting fixed correctly as I just had someone send me a text to test my theory and I haven't received it yet I can still do everything else on my phone.

If you are auto closing everything without setting up exceptions you will have issues. My radio stack became unresponsive after auto closing everything and I had to go through the system files that were running one by one to place them on the exclusion list otherwise it would keep happening. Now no issues.

I had the same issues with not getting txt msgs at first. I told the sprint rep and he simply tokd me to reset my phone...and it works great since then

Update to Original Message - Brand New Replacement Hero w/ Identical Issues
Yeah, the title may have initially been misleading, but it turns out its spot on.
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.

I will keep you all posted (if any of you are at all interested). I never usually post my boring issues on forums, but I thought this was pretty interesting given how new the CDMA Hero is.

Yes pllease keep us updated as i had the same issues as you did until i resetted my phone. I hope an update will fix the issue

were you able to receive text messages after the reset? if so your problem is different to mine as a reset doesn't fix it at all

Ya after reset my phone has been fine.

3rd Update - 3rd Replacement Hero
So I've just picked up my 3rd phone. The previous 2 are being sent off to Sprint HQ so they can determine exactly what is going on.
Apparently (as I think I mentioned previously), Sprint HQ have a very good idea as to whats going on but a) need to confirm it and b) wont tell the Sprint repair tech what they're thinking. In an email that HQ sent to the tech, they said:
“We should be hearing about a resolution shortly and I can check in with him later on today. I would simply let your customer know that this is the highest priority at development and they are close to a resolution.”
In the mean time, I've been advised not to install any non-standard apps i.e. anything but facebook/google. The tech has a feeling its down to one of the 2 memory management apps I used, Advanced TaskKiller Free and TaskKiller Free. Apparently the Sprint employee that I mentioned earlier that had this issue was also using a TaskKiller app. I was also advised not to set up any Microsoft exchange accounts as some problems have been reported, but I dont think its anything really to do with this (however, I'm following his advice all the same).
Should be hearing something from the tech guy early next week and will post the feedback.

mine is doing the exact same thing!!! i thought is was that nobody has texted me in the last couple of days but i was dead wrong..... im gonna try to uninstall task killer free and reboot to see if thats the problem.... if not, then back to the Sprint Store
Thats what happens when Sprint decides to patch up Android with CDMA support rather than waite for native in 1.6

You guys aren't just killing all the tasks when you are running these programs are you?

i did.... still same issue

I had to reset my phone twice today just to get the internet connection back. Android is a joke or maybe its just sprint. Im moving back to winmo as soon as hd2 is here in the US.

I can assure you it is not Android, but Sprints implementation of Android on the Hero. Hopefully we'll get a 1.6 update soon. Hang in there, it'll be worth the wait.

i hope so. i really miss bluetooth transfer and exchange server is constantly on i want to be able to set peek times. i also want me notifications to repeat until i acknowledge them. missed call only works or missed calls and sms.

I have reset my phone three times now and still not working. I can assure you this has nothing to do with the network as I'm still able to receive calls and emails hence not the network but what I believe to be HTC. Let me clarify, I believe I have either installed an app that corrupted my ability to receive sms text or somehow messed my phone up however it's the phone itself that's not erasing all info when I do a reset like it should.
I still have audio files from sound boards I installed when I initially got the phone that are still present after four factory resets that shouldn't be. This is a phone issue and not a network issue. Sadly the phone is so new there isn't a rom I can flash to that would fix the issue as whatever I did to my phone a factory reset isn't fixing it. It's that simple, if HTC made it to where a factory reset put the phone back to the original state then I wouldn't have this issue or files present from 3-4 factory resets ago....
This is frustrating :O

Cannot answer with green phone or softkey

I've been having this issue for a month or so now. I've tried hard resets, various ROM's, etc. It's intermittent, and I have not been able to establish any sort of pattern. As you can imagine, this is frustrating.
I'm on Sprint, and am under contract for 9 lines until February 2010. I am to the point that I want a different phone, but I need to have email. I do not want a Touch and I'm not too psyched about going back to a Blackberry.
Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem, or for a different phone that I can use on Sprint's network? (I have to retain email functionality)
I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about, but I have a similar problem. I am running the same ROM as you (DCD 2.3.2) as well as Radio 3.27, but I am on Verizon's network.
I use S2U2 to lock my device, and occasionally when I receive a phone call I am not able to answer it. The caller ID feature does not work with these instances and all I see is my Today screen while my phone is ringing. The left soft key says "call status" but I have no way of answering, nor seeing who it is that is calling. This is quite frustrating/annoying and I have tried many different combinations in the settings (power suspend on/off, direct draw on/off, etc.) to no avail.

Standard testing protocol...load the OEM 3.35 package, do not install other applications or tweaks, see if you still have the problem. If not, install applications or tweaks one at a time, waiting sufficient time to determine if the problem reoccurs, and when it does you have isolated the cause.
There are a couple of threads on this from a few weeks ago, we started trying to figure out which application was causing it but the threads fizzled...
The app that it looked like was at fault was Advanced Config, but it hasn't been confirmed - do you have it installed?
As of right now I'm running the newest stock ROM and still have the problem.
I have no applications installed.
I've been doing IT work for 10 years but can't nail down any source of this issue via my own experiences or through searching. I am stumped.

If you have the problem with the stock ROM with no tweaks or added applications, maybe it is a hardware problem. Try getting Sprint to exchange the equipment under the warranty.
Anyone have a solution to this? I had Adv Config, and removed it, but the problem persists. I have progressively begun to remove the last installed programs, resetting each time, but it does not seem to help. I would do a hard reset, but I did not back up all of my info yet. Any help would be appreciated.
Full Disclosure: I don't want to tick of the advconfig guys so I am saying this up front again... It's not confirmed that advconfig is the culprit, but so far, it's a very common factor.
Uninstalling the app didn't work for me either... had to hard reset (too the chance to load the latest DCD... 2.3.2 when I did it). You're going to have to save off what you need and then do that I am afraid.

Take the phone to a Sprint store, they will give you a new one if you have the replacement insurance plan... I think is about $7 a month or so...
I had a friend that was having similar issues, and that is what he did.
He hasn't had the problem since (about 3 months)
Ok, so, I used Sprite backup and backed up my data, then did a hard reset, and of course the problem went away. After doing a restore the problem went away. After a little trouble shooting I narrowed it down to a program called "Bennec83 New Battery Icon (White)" . I have yet to put all my programs back in place that I removed (5 total), but I put this one back on, and the problem re-appeared, I removed it and the problem went away. If It starts to happen after I replace the other programs I will report back here.
that's interesting. I did not have that program installed when I had the issue. perhaps there is a certain combination of registry settings or DLL files or something else that causes this (I am no where near smart enough when it comes to these thing to be able to speak with authority on them).
I hope someone can eventually figure this out once and for all, though my phone still works great after my hard reset a few weeks ago.
Just for the sake of it I put Advan Config back on my phone and what do you know, the issue returned again with that program too. I am guessing that these programs aren't playing nice with one/some of the other programs that I have installed as well, but I am no authority either.
My problem is intermittent. Sometimes after a hard reset or a fresh flash it is fine for a while. Sometimes it's a day or two, sometimes it is fine for 2 or 3 calls and then goes back to the usual. Have to press and hold the green phone for it to answer.
This is happening on stock and custom roms. I do not have the insurance policy but what kind of warranty does the phone carry from the manufacturer?
All Sprint phones come with a one year warranty. Within that time you can take your phone to a Sprint store and they'll repair or replace it for free. If they replace it you'll almost certainly get a refurb. Also, any replacement you get will carry the balance of the original warranty or six months, whichever is longer.
Going by what you're describing I'd say you could get a replacement as long as the Sprint techs can replicate the issue. If you're having a spell where it's doing it for days at a time, try to get to a store ASAP so they know you're not crazy. Of course make sure you're on a stock Sprint ROM with no third party apps installed so they can't blame it on faulty software. Good luck.

Very strange problem with my newly replaced g1

Ok, so I got water damage... alot of water damage.. to my g1 yesterday morning, paid the $130 deductible to have it replaced under warranty... and i just got the replacement in today
i went to tmobile since i lost my old sim card that i took out of my old g1 yesterday, and had them activate a new one for me, put it in, and was running rc33, everything was working fine until people started texting me, so here is my best attempt to explain my issue
If a tmobile customer txt messages me, everything is fine
If i text my self, everything is fine
Any other carrier i have timestamp issues, exactly 4 hours off (ex: its 8pm and it says 4pm on the timestamp)
However, it gets weirder than that, if I look at the list of people who have messaged me, timestamps for most recent message plus the brief display of the last message is correct for any carrier, if i open the message though, its incorrect. what this causes is something like this:
Bob: (message) 4:01
Bob: (message) 4:09
Bob: (message) 4:18
Bob: (message) 4:32
Me: (message) 8:02
Me: (message) 8:11
Me: (message) 8:20
Me: (message) 8:33
Now while these times are made up, its the best way to describe it, if bobs message shows 4:01, it actually came in at 8:01, and it only shows incorrectly when i open bobs individual thread, if viewing the list of threads, it will actually show as 8:01
This happens with both the stock messaging app, and chomp sms pre cupcake, i have no other apps installed, and ive changed no other settings
tmobile and i went over apn settings, refreshed me on the network, battery pulls, wipes, all sorts of crap for a hour and a half when tmobile finally said there is nothing they can do, to call there insurance company that sent me the replacement and have them send me a new phone
i was lucky enough to have a woman who was not only nice, but had a g1 and understood how to use it when talking to tmobile, however when talking to the insurance company, it was a guy who had no idea what he was talking about when it came to g1's
he first asked me to remove the battery, hold the power button to "drain the last of the power from the g1 so it forgets everything it last did" for 15 seconds, then power on, of course didnt work, then he tells me he had received an email/memo about timestamp issues with cupcake... so i tell him that im running rc33 and not cupcake, so he tells me that i need to update to cupcake and see if that fixes the issue, even though he had just gotten an email about timestamp issues with cupcake, so they wont send me a new g1 untill i get a OTA update from tmobile for cupcake
i decided not to wait, and i started to go through the root process, i just downgraded to rc29, just logged into the gmail and decided before going on, id test it again, had a verizon customer send me a txt, same issue, both with rc33 and rc29...
now ive got another g1, currently running ion, no problems with that one, its of course in the exact same area, and right next to me, again, no problems at all
tmobile has no known issues in my area for the network
tmobile has nothing reported about this with rc33, nor any other firmware according to the woman i spoke to
im going to go ahead and root and goto ION, but i figured id wait before doing that and post this issue here incase its a simple fix that i can do before flashing to ion, any ideas guys?
I had the same problem too, but it went away on its own
I believe it was a T-Mo network problem as someone in another thread said, but I can't say for sure.

Story time...

Hey guys(gals),
I have an interesting dilemma. I have had 5 hero's in a month. One was defective hardware (so we can rule that out, it was the green phone button) but the other 3 have had an interesting issue. I will have the phone for about 4 days (this is with stock android, and two rooted with MoDoCo) and then all data ( including texts, voicemails, incoming calls) will stop. They only way to retrieve said data is to make an outgoing call, then everything floods in. The local sprint store keeps replacing the phone, but I refuse to believe that I am that unlucky. Any thoughts? Anyone having a similar issue?

Do you have a significant other that could use your phone on their plan for a few days to rule out your account specifically?
Your issues sound strange, and not related to the phone. It's hard for me to believe (like you also) that its the phone since you've had four of them now with the same issue. Also, you've tried different roms, so that also makes it more difficult to be a phone issue. Are you just running a bone stock one? Or are you installing particular apps? you might see if you can't replicate it with no additional software for a few days.
@kmart
My Father and I are on the the same plan, (i.e. both on unl.) so that rules out service. The last phone, (no. 4) I left bone stock. No extra apps (except for Handcent SMS [ on a side note, I have run both ChompSMS and Handcent, so I do not think it is either]) and it still had the same exact issues.

Sounds like a problem with you account's provisioning or something. Mostly, it just sounds like a huge pain in the ass.

I had this exact same issue with my phone, it is definitely an account issue, get your msl number from them, mine was fixed after I did a ##786# menu then reset
they disabled texts and reenabled them on my account before they did this, and then they worked ever since
Have you changed your mode of operation setting? I haven't ever changed this but had a co-worker who changed it on his hero and it stopped getting text messages and voicemails until he made a phone call, once he changed it back it started working fine. Mode of operation needs to be set to Hybrid. You can find it under Settings->Wireless Controls->Mobile Network Settings. Hope this helps
Hey guys,
Thanks for the help, so no dice. I have left my Mode of Ops. in Hybrid (although, if you leave it on Ev-do is is kosher) and doing a reset does not work...It is a huge pain in the arse....
Well sh*t. I thought the last phone was the key, but here we go again. I got my MSL and did a reset, no dice, got Another phone....phone No. 6...Sprint has no idea what the hell is going on. Personally, I think something in the phone is crashing software. I have no idea what could be, but wtf.
I've had similar issues before. It's definitely an account issue - not on your billing account, but your specific phone number in the carrier's system.
What I did was fight for months with Sprint, kept talking to retarded tech support reps who know absolutely nothing, fighting with their managers, fighting with their 2nd and 3rd level tiers, and been told 1000 times my issue was fixed, just to have it reoccur in a month.
Honestly, unless you feel like fighting like that, I suggest you call your carrier and ask for a new number. When they create a new number for you, your account is practically changed, and everything will work like new. You just have to suffer with a new number, which is only annoying for a month or so until everyone updates to your new number.
Good luck man, I hate when that kinda crap happens. Not so much because of the issue, but mainly because no carrier has any sort of good tech support and would rather hang up on you than try and troubleshoot anything. They're completely stupid.
Well, to be honest, I have to keep this number, it is my business number..So, what I am going to do is keep going to into the headquarters store here in omaha. Then. Once I get to about phone no.7/8/9 I am going to call sprint retention services. At that point I will have 7/8/9 phones on record, and they will fix it and give me the 3 months free, or I will walk. I like sprint better than others around here, but damn I am getting pissed...

Yeah dude. I was pissed too. Good luck man, I know how you feel. Sprint is great, but when they f**k up they really f**k up and it's a pain in the ass to get things fixed.
27s, this isn't a retention issue, this is a Tier 3 tech support issue. They need to go into your account and completely deconstruct it, and put it back together again. Basically, it's a glitch in the system causing your provisioning to bork itself. I've seen it before, and yes, it's a pain in the ass to fix, but if you get a caring/dedicated tech, it's not even close to impossible.
Frankly, call into sprint, get on the line for tech support. As soon as you connect, ask for ADVANCED tech support. Don't give up until you're on the line with them. They'll be your saviors in this issue, mark my words.
Edit: For the record, I'm a former Sprint tech. I've had to do this before for customers, so I've had experience in the issue.
Hey thanks for the advice....I will do this first thing tomorrow....I don't suppose retention will give me anything will they....The sprint store in omaha is like 100 blocks from my house....gas$$$...haha

Data not working on my wife's phone

My wife flashed her hero to the official sprint 2.1. She had never rooted or flashed a custom rom before, so her going to the official 2.1 didn't really bother me much. However, now she's running into an issue with her data not working. A couple days ago she noticed she wasn't getting her e-mail. Strangely enough, mine quite working too (I'm on fresh 2.1.1). I rebooted my phone and mine started working. So I went to her wireless and network settings and turned off her data. I then turned it back on and after 30 seconds or so it said it was connected and everything started working just fine.
The strange part is there are no errors and even when the phone tries to check e-mail, it doesn't report any errors. Now, on my phone when this happened, my HTC Mail app threw a fit because it couldn't connect to the exchange server. Since I could refresh my gmail account and got no errors I thought it was just our exchange server. I signed into my account on my PC (for exchange) and it was in fact working fine. After I rebooted (just this one time as mentioned above) gmail kicked off with new mail and exchange connected fine.
Today, she has told me 3 times now that she went in and reset the connection (turn it off and back on) and a while later it would quit working again. She turns her phone off every night, but for good measure I am having her reboot it now.
Anyone else have this issue? She never had this problem on 1.5, so I don't think it's hardware. I've only had the issue once, but I'm also not in her area right now (tower related, maybe? My data borked when I was at home where she is at right now).
Thanks

This does seem like a tower problem. However, if you want to troubleshoot, you could always reset your data settings via the Sprint ## codes.
For data, enter this code: ##3282# on your Dial Pad. Give it a second and it'll ask if you want to view or edit your settings. Trouble shooting this problem would mean you have to Edit the settings, but in order to edit them you need your MSL code, which can be obtained by either contacting Sprint CS and asking them for it; or you can search around here on XDA and I'm pretty sure some people posted other ways to get your code.
Once you have your MSL code, choose edit when you get the pop up window and then click on your menu button -- there should be an option for you to choose reset -- enter your MSL code and your phone will reboot.
This may or may not fix your problem; I've had success whenever I've had data problems.
Hey thanks! I did a search for MSL and found a thread with a procedure to get it through CDMA workshop but the drivers don't want to work with Windows 7 x64.
However, my wife was complaining the other day that it takes a long time for her phone to start ringing when someone calls. I think I'll call sprint tonight when I get home and just tell them I need to fix that and see if they give me the MSL... Might kill two birds with one stone.

On the taking a long time to ring:
1) Move the ringtone off the SDcard into the phone, in some cases the SD card is to slow to read it fast enough. - Worked for a buddy of mine
2) There is a polling rate you can set when you get the MSL - but I have heard sprint forces a particular rate from the tower even if the phone has one set. - This will also decrease battery life.

This may be too obvious of an answer, but have you tried using the device self service tool and updating your profile and prl?

No problem, hope everything works out.
I had the same problem, took it to the sprint store (Waste of time!) and ended up hard resetting it, seems to have fixed the problem. you can hard reset by turning off the phone and then holding down the end, back and home buttons and selecting "clear storage" or "clear user data" (sorry, can't remember the exact wording). It will completely reset the software but it will wipe the data off your phone.
I got her MSL code via the logcat method that was just recently posted and reset her data and also changed her slot index. Although some people say that it is overridden at the tower, I also changed her priority. I updated her PRL as well. Before, it was ringing after I would hear about 3.5 rings, sometimes 4 full rings. Now it's ringing on the second ring. Also, her data was essentially turning off after about 30 minutes. After doing all of the above, she is saying it hasn't stopped working yet.
Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like it might be fixed.
Well it's still not fixed. She has it happen a couple times a day and now my phone is doing it too. It's not happening consistently that I can tell, just seems to randomly stop working.
Also, I'm on Fresh 2.1.2 and I'm getting some really really bad lag. I don't use any custom ringtones, just the ones that came with the phone and sometimes my phone will start to ring and the only way I know is because the vibrate starts. Then a good 3 seconds later I'm still getting a black screen as the phone is trying to tell me who it is.
I will randomly pick up my phone to surf the web too and it won't respond or do anything for like a good 10 - 15 seconds. I open up ES Task Manager and usually one of the mail apps is trying to update with like a 5% - 10% cpu usage, but that's all that has any CPU percentage. I'm not really sure what to try next. I've removed some apps that I don't really use and a couple that I just recently installed just to see if they are the culprit.
I'm using the Launcher Pro Beta too. Maybe that's it?
I've had a similar issue... only happened to me a couple of times since the update though... but I've just been turning "airplane" mode on and then off it turns off the radio and then turns it back on... seems to have worked for me...
again.. for me it's only happened a couple of times since the update to 2.1 so it could be a different issue.
I never thought of airplane mode. Doing what her and I are doing just reconnects data, not turning the radio on and off. I'm going to have her try that next and see if that fixes it. She says that she turns the phone off every night, but maybe she isn't some nights.

[Q] Text Messages Not Received Until Soft Reset

Recently, my phone will stop receiving text messages until I soft reset. Before posting, I tried a hard reset to see if that would fix the issue, but that did not work.
Is anyone else having similar issues with text messages?
Things worth noting:
1. I can still send messages without issue, even when I can't receive them.
2. All other data services on the phone work without any trouble (email, marketplace, zune, etc)
3. It happens even when I have full service, so it shouldn't be a connection/network issue.
4. I have a class 2 16 GB sandisk installed, which has been installed since I got the phone in November (might try a hard reset without the card to see if that helps).
It's interesting that the problem persisted through a hard reset. Right now I'm trying to determine if there's a specific set of actions that can be taken to reproduce the issue, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts.
**UPDATE**
So even after pulling the sd card and hard resetting the phone, the problem is still present. Guess I'll have to head on over to AT&T to get a replacement.
If you are having the issue, it looks like you are only able to receive 10 messages before requiring a soft reset :'(
Thanks
I'm having the same exact problem. While I was on the phone with the ATT rep, she even tried to send me a text and couldn't!
Yeah I just went through the warranty exchange process with at&t and a replacement is on its way.
My co-worker also has a focus and hasn't had any problems, and with the number of people on this forum and no other responses, I don't think it's a very widespread issue.
I'm glad I found someone else with the problem though! Solidarity man! It's incredibly annoying. I setup a cron job on my server to send me a text every 15 minutes so I know when they stop working.
I'm ready to scream. I have a Dell Venue Pro (Another Windows Mobile 7 Phone) sitting here that has been an issue since day with everything EXCEPT text messaging. I spoke with ATT rep and they "claim" its either two things for me:
1) Porting of my number still transferring. ITs been to Sprint, T-Mobile, and now ATT all within the PAST two weeks.
2) Having a Metal roof can screw up the signal. Which I think is false because I have NO problem sending out texts, calling, surfing the web.
Again, NOT a problem restarting the phone and receiving texts but after, lets say, 15 minutes and having 3 bars, it stops. Its just like how T-Mobile network acted with Dell Venue Pro with the Internet, it needed to be restarted every hour or so. I'm READY to scream! I CAN NOT believe there AREN'T others with this problem!
10 Message Limit
Oh man. Yeah the Venue Pro launch was pretty rough. I was holding out for that phone too and was going to switch to t-mo, but I didn't want to chance it with all the problems that were being reported.
I have finally found a pattern though! It appears for me that after restarting the phone I can receive 10 text messages before they stop. I found this out because as I mentioned in my last post, I setup my server to send me messages every 15 minutes. While I was sleeping, i hit my sms receipt wall and a bunch of messages "queued up". This morning I restarted my phone, and 10 messages came in, then no more. Restarted again, received another 10, and so on until all the queued up messages had been received.
So it would be interesting if you check to see if there's a hard number limit of messages you can receive.

I noticed it this morning. I was on the phone with another tech support rep last night that WAS NO help, only concluded with that, I'm suppose to go to one of their stores and switch it out with another handset. Problem with that is, I didn't purchase it from ATT since Amazon.com had it for a penny. So, that'll be a fun visit. <--sounds like I'm from the south, don't it? lol
I'm having SO much fun sending myself texts to see if it actually goes through and I receive it. Here's something to think about, the two weeks I had T-mobile, I sent out 5,689 texts. So, this feature is something I actually WANT.
Update: Swapped out the phone. I had to act like an idiot because they had NO record of my sale at the ATT store, which there isn't any since I bought it at Amazon.com for a penny.
Knock on wood, its working. Sent myself over 50 texts throughout 2 hours.
I just recently started having this problem. I didn't notice at first, I just didn't think I was receiving any text messages. I accidentally restarted the phone (crappy case) and when I started it back up I got 10 texts instantly...all from the previous day. So I thought, oh AT&T must have screwed up. A day goes by and still no texts (odd because I usually get at least 20 texts a day). So I try to send myself a text. No bueno. So I restarted my phone. 10 texts. Restarted again. 10 texts...all still from Monday (2 days ago).
I already had problems with cellular data (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867347), and now this. If this problem is being caused by the SD card too, I'm getting rid of it.

Yes, I have seen this on occasion. Seems to be random and relatively infrequent in nature for me right now though. One thing that I have noticed (and may or may not be related) is that wireless sync seems to stop working at the same time. A soft rest always makes the problem go away...
I had this problem with my 2nd focus (i dropped the first and shattered the screen) It seemed to work fine for a few hours after I got it, then stopped receiving. As soon as I'd reboot the phone, itd work till i sent about 10 messages, then stopped. I tried my sim in another phone, worked fine. So now i'm on my 3rd phone.
Id tried multiple hard resets and none of them helped - I had assumed i'd just gotten a bad phone. But it seems a more common issue than I'd originally thought. I'd tried initially to take out my SD card (Kingston 16gb Class 4) and it didnt help.
Just got this problem on my Omnia 7, so maybe it's an OS or carrier issue.

Interesting. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue on some of the htc or lg phones or if it's a Samsung only problem. I guess this means that it's not related to the sd card though!
I have since replaced my defective focus and have yet to experience any problems with the new one.
I believe I've figured out and need a few testers to verify fix. I too was experiencing same issue of not receiving more than 10 SMS text messages until soft reset. After multiple hard resets and eventual phone replacement by AT&T Technical Support, I decided to navigate the Diagnosis Codes determined to find a fix for you all. Long story short, I discovered and tested the setting that causes and fixes the issue as follows:
*#197328640#
1 Debug
8 Phone Control
7 Network Control
1 GCF
3 Setting Cancellation
End
Soft Reset phone (Reboot)
You can test by texting yourself (your mobile number)
Enjoy!

Hi, I can't open my root menu using *#197328640#. Any idea? I have the same problem of not receiving SMS.

Thanks. I've been experiencing the problem too ... will test and let you know if it works for me!
I'm not experiencing this problem any more, though I can't say for sure whether it was solved due to that diagnostic menu action or the Samsung firmware update I applied later that evening.

I hope you're fix works for me too. This has been very annoying.
Good luck everyone. If v1122 of diagnosis menu has been installed due to update you can get to it by *#32489# and click on "Back" to get where you need in the menu.
Reporting back.
As long as I'm in an area with good radio penetration, the fix is a godsend.
In areas with poor radio penetration, it's no change.
So, I'll say good work tyryanjr & ATT-US
You guys improved my love of the focus tenfold today.
I should mention I am using a Rogers Branded Focus, SIM Unlocked, Dev Unlocked (Chevron), NoDo, on SaskTel's wireless network in Saskatchewan. If you are on Bell or Telus with similiar issues, give it a whirl.
To my wireless carrier, please rectify the situation, ASAP!
