Hi guys, i currently have an s2 rooted and with pac rom on it, its been a long time since i just rooted without using a custom rom though.
I am getting an s4 tomorrow and what i wanted to know is, can i just root my s4 and keep my current android version and then still have access to updates via kies?
At the moment i dont want to use any custom roms but want the root access.
Is there a preferred way to root the s4 that is currently recommended and fail safe?
I am in the UK if that matters at all?
thanks for any tips.
James
you will loose root access if update
you actually can update it manually with kies over usb. it will be unrooted afgerwards though
depending on your software version you can use the motochopper (mega easy) or the cf autoroot (slightly less easy)
As mentioned by Uhu, I can confirm that rooting and then using Kies will allow you to update - but you lose root and have to re-root.
Thank you very much for the info, would the cf auto root be the better option?

hi there guys
i have just bought a new s4 and currently im a noob in android and would be very thankfull if you can answer two questions regarding backup and restore:
1.is it possible to backup my stock rom wich i recieved with my s4 in cmw before rooting the device?
2. does restoring a rom wich you backed up after rooting will gain you automaticly root access when in restoring it? (superuser and the premissions will be installed and activated automaticly?)

Hi,
1 .Yes ,you can backup your entire system with the recovery backup.
2. If you back up a rooted system,it will restore as a rooted system.

Hi,
Look HERE
Your best plan would be to install a recovery, backup your system, and then return it to an "Official" rooted system with the link I gave you.
On the thread there is a link for a stock recovery to return you to stock and be able to receive updates.
The thread I gave you ,the [OP] is constantly updating his ROMS,so you will not lose out on updates anyway.

Hi,
It depends whether the stock ROM contains stock recovery.
I doubt it.
You will probably have to find a stock recovery somewhere.

t-mobile
galaxy s4
sgh-m919
android 4.3
baseband m919uvuemk2
kernel version 3.4.0-2015522
have spent the last day boning up on rooting my t-mobile s4 4.3 and still feel that i have too many questions, and i consider myself pretty tech savvy, at least in terms of pcs! anyway i'm someone could help me with the following questions:
1. can i take a snapshot of my current (stock) setup before i root, which i would be able to reload in the event i find rooting is not for me? i'm talking about a backup, image or snapshot of everything that's now on my phone which i can restore if needed, returning my phone to it's exact state before i rooted?
2. when i root my phone will it delete such things as my contacts, photos, apps, etc? or will that only happen when a custom rom is installed after rooting? if the latter, i'm guessing i could do a full phone backup after rooting using something like titanium, and the flash a custom rom which would give me a clean os, free of all samsung's and t-mobile's bloatware? and if i decided a rooted phone wasn't for me, i could restore the backup of my original phone using titanium?
3. when i root my phone and install a clean, bloat-free os, what sort of thing will no longer be possible in terms of my provider's (tmobile) services? for example i guess i would no longer get automatic ota's? how about tmobile notifications or the like? will tmobile be able to access my rooted phone as they are able to do now? and if not are there any disadvantages to this? i'm guessing there are more advantages to this.
4. so once my phoned is rooted and a new rom flashed, is it a relatively easy process to reload all of my contacts, photos and settings?
5. and, finally, someone recommended that i use the rotting steps outlined at galaxys4root.com, do you agree?
thanks very much in advance, what a tremendous community!

odd, thought that's where i posted....
anyway
> i went ahead and rooted using the "[SGH-M919] CF-Auto-Root" method provided by chainfire and it worked without a hitch, was a very quick and simple process.
> confirmed with root checker, all is good.

> downloaded titanium and backed up apps and system data - was hoping for an option that allowed me to take an image of my phone that could be restored if needed. perhaps i can do that with cwm when i back up the rom?

Hi,
I rooted Note 3 with towelroot recently and my knox is still 0 and would like to keep it that way. Would also like to keep all my settings and apps if possible too. I haven't flashed any roms or anything like that. Only thing I've done is grant some of my apps root access and downloaded an app that required root (which since then I've uninstalled). Now however I see a new firmware update is available for my Note 3 and would like to update to it. I'm sorta new to the Android scene, so don't know where to start to do this, so would appreciate any guidance.
Is there also anything I should do while on root before I unroot?
Thanks
@XLAAX you dont need to unroot to upgrade firmware. Use odin method to upgrade it.
You will find it on sammobile

So what will happen when I unroot using this? Will the phone be unrooted again or will it keep root? Also will knox be tripped using this method?

Hmm, I was under the impression that you need to unroot your phone to upgrade the firmware. If this isnt the case, then no real need to unroot I suppose.
What about Android L? Will I need to unroot for that? (Realise you can't predict such a thing, but has there ever been a case where you needed to unroot for an android firmware?)
EDIT: Oh and for future knowledge, how should I handle OTA updates? Should I not update that way if I'm rooted?

I dont know about towel root I used cf auto root and I upgraded to 4.4.2 after rooting.
But I am sure there is no need to unroot in any case.
Android L ia not yet been out for note 3.

Hey guys i have used to search engine and can't find a way to go back to stock unrooted on this at&t note 3. Its running 4.3 and was only rooted. Do you guys know a step by step you could guide me to? I just need the phone to be able to get OTA updates. I don't care if its wiped or anything about the knox. I am selling it and i don't want the guy to not be able to get the uodates. Thanks so much!
You could try the option in supersu to unroot and then boot to recovery and factory reset

I already read this.. no sign for 5.0 version or any of the things i asked..
With flashing stock ROM to 5.0 you DO NOT lose any data but you lose root (it`s impossible to avoid that). But if you will update to Lollipop, I HIGHLY recommend factory resetting phone.

Huh.. as I said , I want to root my device .. even if I lose the root , how I can root back at 5.0 and still keep knox 0x0?
- Factory resetting phone removes all data on phone right?
Yes, doing a factory reset will make you lose your data.
There probably is no working method to root the phone with lollipop and keep knox 0x0.

root on 5.0 without tripping knox, don't think so/ try custom rom's with knox 0x0 .as towelroot does not root lollipop c/f root does but it will trip knox tho .regard's
