So are the locked bl folks like myself left behind in the long-term? What needs to happen for there to be more SS ROM development??

Supposedly, there's a way to make every ROM SS compatible. I think it has to do with removing the boot.img, but I'm sure there's more it than that. I've seen people complain about there being no SS ROMs, then someone mentions this solution, but nobody takes action. Honestly, it's going to be up to someone that has a locked down device to start putting out these SS compatible ROMs.
Then, you will run into kernel issues like we used to run into on the older SS ROMs. Let's say you want CM10.2 that is 4.3 based. Your stock ROM is 4.1.2, so you'll run into kernel issues like an inop camera, WiFi, etc. Honestly, your best bet is to find one of the 2 SS compatible stock ROMs that are the same kernel as you and use Xposed to modify it. There's someone on DroidRzr that used Xposed on his X with a stock ROM and he has been able to load up the custom CM themes.

Yeah... It can't be that hard - all the other motos have SS CMs out. Just gotta have someone with the knowledge and need/want to make it happen

I have the ATT 16G S4 variant. The device is rooted, sim unlocked, and has a twrp recovery. Two questions,
1. I have made a back up in twrp for boot, system, and data. But I do not see an option to back up the stock kernel. So how do I make a back up for my stock kernel? Or is the stock kernel already backed up as part of system?
Now I want to try running the Omega custom rom on it. I know I have to also flash a tw based locki patched kernel for my att variant since the bootloader is locked.
2 What is the best kernel for running Omega on ATT?
Thanks!
Your kernel is backed up with the boot when performing a nandroid. But "best"of threads are against xda rules man. Gotta try for yourself

Right, I meant, what are some of the tw based kernels which will run smoothly with Omega rom on my att device?
Not sure. There is only two kernels for tw and im pretty sure it says in in the link below you have to use a specific one

Edit. It says must use loki kernel. I skimmed over the faux kernel thread and didnt see anything about it being loki'd
So use KT kernel

All of them work perfect, each phone and what you run on your phone affects how the kernel will work for you...try each one, give 24hrs per kernel to see if battery results and such are for you.
Good luck

Thanks! I have been on KT for the past couple of days. Everything seems fine so far. I will try Adam and Faux in the weeks to come. I did notice the phone heats up pretty quickly after using the swipe to capture screenshot function. Is that normal?
Where can I find the Adam kernel download for AT&T S4?
Howdy,
So I'm considering updating my trusty XT907 from 4.1.2 up to the new update 4.2.2.
I"m running stock ROM unlocked with Motochopper, using Safestrap 3.12. Removed a mass of stuff, been running it steamlined and smooth. I'd like to update though from what I've read. I've always ran ROMs for years now, but at this point in my busy schedule I can't keep up with the development, and I"m outta the loop. The last ROM I ran on the razr m before stock was the Energy ROM.
My question is, now with bootloader unlocked am I safe to update to 4.2.2 and keep root? Innocent question, hopefully.
Thank you -

Stock has only gone as far as 4.1.2. If you want 4.2.2, you need to run AOSP.

Many thanks for the tips! However, this last one made me a little more confused - are you saying to be rooted with 4.2.2 I need to run AOSP roms?
Apologies but I just upgraded to the razr M after running my beloved Droid Incredible with CM10 forever -- absolutely loving it but entirely confused by the rooting options.
My ideal is to have the 4.2.2 update, and to still be unlocked and rooted, with no additional rom's, and with whichever recovery is needed to achieve this. Then I'll start having a look at dhacker's and the Orion looks good too. But I just want the stock 4.2.2 with root access first - if possible.
Many thanks for the clarity --

if you want to get to 4.2.2, you'll need root access and an unlocked bootloader. stock 4.2.2 is AOSP (it's available in the development section).
the latest update (from what I have read) is NOT 4.2.2 update - I believe is to lock the bootloader. so folks are recommending to NOT accept the update.
I would advise to root, unlock, install TWRP. From there, you can choose your flavor of ROM (keeping in mind that 4.2.2 has not been officially released for the M).

Sorry, I confused things a little, and JCO's post wasn't very clear either.
If want you to run 4.2.2, you need to run an aftermarket ROM. The M has only been updated to 4.1.2. So, you won't find a stock based ROM that's 4.2.2. JCO refers to CM10.1 as being "stock", but it's not. It's the most basic AOSP ROM. As a comparison, the M's stock ROM is Motoblur based.

well, CM10.1 is the closest to stock (appearance-wise) of all the after market 4.2.2 ROMs available (to my understanding, there is no themeing on it). but I think there a few tweaks in it (hence AOSP).

Yeah, CM10.1 is pretty bone stock. I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion with the term "stock." I read our posts, and it would've made a lot of people crawl into the corner, crying.
Excellent, many thanks! That was confusing me also - seeing an update available for my xt097 but reading that 4.2.2 is not available for the razor m - I was wondering what the update was.
I'll be flashing to TWRP tonight - cheers again -hopefully no issues flashing over safestrap. That was neat tho - being able to pick between ROMs to run.
If your already unlocked you never really loose root ever
And the latest verzion update breaks the root method and won't let you unlock if your still locked it doest relock you I think that's impossible

Does anyone know of such a ROM that I can have root, download, deodex, and debloat (but no mods) for the SGH-I337? I'd like to run a pure stock rooted ROM without bloat. I do not want the modded (black) apps with the messaging and etc. Just the full on debloated stock experience with root privileges. No, I do not want a competition with whatever ROM is best as I do not intend to start an argument about it. So, in that case, does anyone have suggestions or the link to another XDA thread? Also, please make sure that it's latest stock for AT&T. Thanks everyone!

I've been using MDOB for a month or so and it is great. Great battery life, smooth, debloated stock, excellent support -- a great ROM. -- Bud
Let me tell ya I have owned hd2, gs2, gs3, gs4, nexus s , nexus 4,atrix hd,transformer 300tf, galaxy tab 2 7.0 galaxy tab 2 10.1, nexus 7, note 2 ,note 10.1, and note 8.0.
I always go for stock based ROMs for stability. For I instal tons of apps that I get issues one after another on custom. I try ROMs after another update after another. This was like a routine which could be enjoyable but annoying sometimes for ur times limited.
With I337, I tried one ROM and I felt no need or urge to flash or even try another. I just could not find flaws or problem with this one.
Which ROM is this?
MDOB!

I am so glad it has been working great for ya. I really wish other android devices that I use also had ROMs like MDOB.
Those add-ons listed on devs post for MDOB also work great as well for they are usually stock/hidden features. For example, torch light is from hidden stock menu and addon will unlock and enable it for you. Addon like in call recording is not an external third party app but it is like unlocking call recording menu within the stock dial/call pad which comes in very handy and convenient. If you have questions then the dev will try to help you promptly. I had minor issues but it was because I did not know how to use the features on ROM correctly. Of coarse the dev tried to help me find solutions along the way. He' s just a great guy and I feel lucky to have him here on gs4 community.

Was about to post same question!
Hi there,
Thanks for this thread and the answers. I was searching for exactly this topic.
I would like to try the MDOB ROM, as it sounds like what I am looking for.
The current MDOB ROM is based on the *MF3 firmware. Is this an issue? I am reading about the AT&T bootloader lock and loki fix that was added in to MF3, plus other custom ROMs that list either a broken sound or broken Wi-Fi as a known issue with MF3.
Are these issues fixed in this ROM (and how?) I don't want to loose TWRP and/or WiFi.
Thanks for any clarification,
Gemini420
MDOB is based on the lastest stock MF3 however it would not give u problems that you would face from updating to notorious MF3 stock.
If I am not mistaken you are supposed to have UCUAMDL stock rooted with custom recovery twrp (preferably i337 version listed on the MDOB page) prior to flashing MDOB.
Check out installation or flashing instruction on the MDOB for more info. The dev points to several things you should watch out for. I just followed the guide and my phone has been running pefectly ever since. Well I wish u Good luck.
Edit: Though I never had any issues with custom recovery and wifi, you might wanna ask there and see if such issues exist on MDOB.

Hi, I'm probably being very idiotic atm but I can't think of any logical issues.
I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S4 i337.. I downgraded from NB1 to MK2, got root, installed safestrap, and attempted to install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544474
It was my understanding this came with Loki-Doki (saw it floating around in a different thread asking if it worked, can find it if nessecary) as a patch. So I downloaded and backed up my stock install, and attempted to install this.
Now the problem is when I boot, it returns me to a bootloop, if you could call that progress.. It vibrates occasionally while bootlooping (samsung - safeboot - blackscreen - vibrate - samsung....). I still have access to safestrap, download mode and so on, if it helps at all. I've also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537495 WITH loki-doki (as it is explicitly stated) to no success either..
I'm looking for one of two solutions;
how to get stock firmware back, or how to properly install this? Or any variation thereof. . . I don't know what the problem is ahaha
Bumping to say multiple wipes>reflashes later the blue screen has yet to occur, not sure what that was... Bootlooping is the huge problem now!

Best bet is to find a ROM that you like, then install the Google Experience Launcher apk. It will give your phone the stock google launcher.

Domination Theme will also extensively theme your touchwiz rom to give it a more complete AOSP look without an AOSP rom.
All right thanks for the help guys.
Hey guys, maybe this has been answered a bunch but I can't seem to find the answer...probably because the people who got this phone when I did have since moved on.
Anyways I am on the mdl bootloader and I can't install most roms. I can use any of the cm/aosp ones but the touchwiz ones are super picky. I get the yellow triangle with modified software and my phone won't boot. Roms like pheonix, imperium, miui get stuck...I've tried different kernels and with and without loki with no success. (Using twrp)
Can I even use different kernels with touchwiz? I'm so confused and am ready to move on up from shostock on jelly bean.
