Can I update to 4.2.2? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy,
So I'm considering updating my trusty XT907 from 4.1.2 up to the new update 4.2.2.
I"m running stock ROM unlocked with Motochopper, using Safestrap 3.12. Removed a mass of stuff, been running it steamlined and smooth. I'd like to update though from what I've read. I've always ran ROMs for years now, but at this point in my busy schedule I can't keep up with the development, and I"m outta the loop. The last ROM I ran on the razr m before stock was the Energy ROM.
My question is, now with bootloader unlocked am I safe to update to 4.2.2 and keep root? Innocent question, hopefully.
Thank you -

With an unlocked bootloader, you can flash TWRP and install CM10.1 from http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29

I see. But I"m curious about keeping the stock ROM.

from my understanding, CM10.1 by dhacker is essentially stock. all others are custom variations.

Stock has only gone as far as 4.1.2. If you want 4.2.2, you need to run AOSP.

Many thanks for the tips! However, this last one made me a little more confused - are you saying to be rooted with 4.2.2 I need to run AOSP roms?
Apologies but I just upgraded to the razr M after running my beloved Droid Incredible with CM10 forever -- absolutely loving it but entirely confused by the rooting options.
My ideal is to have the 4.2.2 update, and to still be unlocked and rooted, with no additional rom's, and with whichever recovery is needed to achieve this. Then I'll start having a look at dhacker's and the Orion looks good too. But I just want the stock 4.2.2 with root access first - if possible.
Many thanks for the clarity --

if you want to get to 4.2.2, you'll need root access and an unlocked bootloader. stock 4.2.2 is AOSP (it's available in the development section).
the latest update (from what I have read) is NOT 4.2.2 update - I believe is to lock the bootloader. so folks are recommending to NOT accept the update.
I would advise to root, unlock, install TWRP. From there, you can choose your flavor of ROM (keeping in mind that 4.2.2 has not been officially released for the M).

Sorry, I confused things a little, and JCO's post wasn't very clear either.
If want you to run 4.2.2, you need to run an aftermarket ROM. The M has only been updated to 4.1.2. So, you won't find a stock based ROM that's 4.2.2. JCO refers to CM10.1 as being "stock", but it's not. It's the most basic AOSP ROM. As a comparison, the M's stock ROM is Motoblur based.

well, CM10.1 is the closest to stock (appearance-wise) of all the after market 4.2.2 ROMs available (to my understanding, there is no themeing on it). but I think there a few tweaks in it (hence AOSP).

Yeah, CM10.1 is pretty bone stock. I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion with the term "stock." I read our posts, and it would've made a lot of people crawl into the corner, crying.

Excellent, many thanks! That was confusing me also - seeing an update available for my xt097 but reading that 4.2.2 is not available for the razor m - I was wondering what the update was.
I'll be flashing to TWRP tonight - cheers again -hopefully no issues flashing over safestrap. That was neat tho - being able to pick between ROMs to run.

If your already unlocked you never really loose root ever
And the latest verzion update breaks the root method and won't let you unlock if your still locked it doest relock you I think that's impossible

This doesn't even matter, all the devs have the official ota update before it comes out due to Google dropping the source before they actually push it out.
Way better to root, you'll have the updates faster that way.

IF you do only one thing, unlock the bootloader before getting lived in on the device. I am rocking stock rooted myself. I am just watching till after cm10.1 hits stable then Ill try some roms out
While I personally prefer stock (with modifications of course) on my N7, it is trivial to revert these devices back to stock, or any other ROM, if you want to. You don't even need to revert and upgrade - you could just download the latest FULL image and flash your device that way, skipping the update step altogether.
But if updates are your only concern, I imagine most of the ROM developers would incorporate the new version into their ROMs very soon after the OTA drops.

This.
Even if you don't run a custom rom initially, if the bootloader is unlocked, you can easily flash a custom recovery and rom later. The problem is that if you unlock all the internal storage gets wiped which is not the end of the world if you backup first but it's still a minor inconvenience.

paranoid is great, but depends what you like. I love it fit the tablet interface and customization options. stock 4.2 had a lot of the same customization built in, so it's awesome as well.

To me, its custom ROM or bust.
-Sent from Marino's Nexus 7-
Multi ROM
you may want to use Multi ROM.
Root your stock ROM.
Install Custom Recovery to install Multi ROM.
After installing Multi ROM, you may now install other or more ROMs inside.
Also, you have the option to auto-boot from stock ROM or from other ROM.
With that, you may access your stock ROM without removing your custom ROMs and vice versa.
Goodluck!
I unlocked and rooted my nexus 7 so that I could use otg cable---> a flash drive … I have extra storage now. Just download an app called stick mount an your all set...
Rooting should be the first thing you should do. As others said you can keep it stock if you want. Only difference is you get to install apps like titanium backup and file managers like root explorer. You also will have a custom recovery so you can backup your latest STABLE and smooth ROM so you can revert back if you ever run into trouble like the 4.2 OTA debacle.
As far as any maintenance and fixing issues... having root makes it a breeze as factory resets just mean in 10 minutes you are back in businesses, you just need redo your screens.
I took the plunge and after rooting I installed this: [EXPERIMENTAL] MultiROM v3
Now I'm running stock along with a few other ROMS, including Ubuntu.

Flashing from stock 4.2.2 to 4.4.2

Looking to flash stock 4.2.2 with 3.4 faux kernal and stock modem, rooted and TWP recovery --> 4.4.2 and enable LTE.
As you can see I have been out of this game for a long time now, I tried searching to no avail. Not many people flashing from 4.2.2.
If you can point me in the right directions on how to flash to 4.4.2 and enable LTE, I would really appreciate it!!!
Thank you and happy holidays!
anyone?
Thanks!
sorry, double post
I'm pretty new to the rooting scene. Would love to learn how to flash from stock 4.2.2 also. I have bought the ulefone u650 because of its impressive specs but I feel the offerings of the os is somewhat too basic.

You may have better luck posing in u650's forum, this is for Nexus 4 devices.
Good luck
If you are rooted use goo to flash latest TWR. Flash a rooted version of 4.2 Flash faux 123s kernel. You won't get a stock radio with lte as they are hybrid. If that is OK flash that. I'd also flash the su update as well. Can't see your problem

[Q] ROM's for Locked 4.1.2 - 98.30.1

Lost the unlocked/rooted X907, had to replace it with a retail version as I was traveling and needed something immediately and wanted to stick with the X907 - as opposed to getting an older one on ebay which I'm probably going to do now anyway just to have a backup. It's the 4.1.2 - 98.30.1 - as I understand it I'm stuck with it locked. I've rooted it with the SafeRoot script.
I've searched a bit and found a few leads, but was wondering if there were any others in a similar situation that make a recommendation for any 4.1.2 ROM's, and/or provide more links on the subject. It seems to me that there would be many who might have the similar misfortune for whatever circumstance. cheers -

Cheers - I will give that one a shot.
SS compatible ROMs:
-Early builds of CM10 (way early, like at the beginning of thread early)
-DeadCalm was SS enabled, not sure if it was modified for an unlocked bootloader only
-Energy is SS enabled and never altered for unlocked bootloader
-Flying Jelly was SS enabled and I don't think it was modified to work only on an unlock bootloader
-Eclipse v1.2 was SS enabled, I don't think it was modified for unlocked bootloader

Hmm. Couldn't get LS 2.3.7 to boot, installed on rom slots 1-3, SS 3.1.1 with wipes and resets. Blank screen. I'll give these others a shot then try and diagnose what's up.

Just wait until the devs come out with a flashable zip or the FXZ is posted. Also, if you want to keep root, I wouldn't plan on updating.
Also worth noting - a factory reset won't change anything anyways.
You can RSD back to stock - but remember like RickRong said - the KK update probably won't be rooted.
I do think that an older msm8960 on kk, unrooted may run intolerably slow. While the X unrooted is OK.

It's been my understanding that kk uses less resources and is more compatible with older hardware than jb. I'm expecting it to run better then the stock 4.1.2 rom we've got now.

I'm sure I probably don't need to ask this, BUT, when Verizon begins rolling this out, would someone please post their success and results? I'm running Carbon today... not sure what it will be tomorrow. I had OSE installed and was overall satisfied, but the navigation buttons were't working and sometimes the keyboard would refuse to pop up, so that was a no-go.
Thank you.

[Q] Root and unlocked BL! Now what ROM?

First need to shout out the towelroot method for root and BL unlock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
SO easy and worked. Love it
Now that I have root AND unlocked BL, will be grabbing me some TWRP, backing up stock and trying some ROMs.
Question is: which one? I've read on some posts that only 1 or 2 ROMs work with KK-based phones. Is this accurate? I believe one post I read said only CM11 works, and its very laggy.
So which to grab? Do all KK ROMs under the development page work after the towelroot exploit? CM11, CarbonRom, Google Play Edition etc? Also, which has best, most reliable native wifi tether working? Any other big bugs among the ROMs that actually work?
You can still use the ones that don't support the new bootloader and kernel by downgrading to jb 4.1.2 since your now bootloader unlocked

You can use the new or older roms with unlocked bootloader just now you need to pay attention to what bootloader + kernel your on. The test builds of cm11 coming out won't work on the old bootloader + Kernel and the older ones won't work with the new kk bootloader + kernel

Just to clarify I am using the Droid Razr M (xt907). I had already taken the ota for 4.4.2 before i used towelroot. I have so far only got one ROM from @dhacker29 to boot. Its a cm11 from him. I can't figure out exactly which ROMs to flash. Is it the ones listed for the moto_msm 8960 or the ones listed for KK???

So I'm not used to looking for BL/kernel compatability usually I don't see this in the OP for a ROM, typically only see android flavor it based on, "JB" or "kk", which I thought would dictate whether a ROM would work on a device. Guess we need to look in the post for BL/kernel version (both which get updated during an OTA update?)
Like I said CM11 was the only one I knew of that for sure worked post-towelroot, that's why I was looking to see if others knew which other ROMs worked as well.
I know we can check kernel version in setting, if kernel matches a ROM then were bound to have the BL that matches as well, correct?
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Only ones listed for KK will work for you now since your on the 4.4.2 ota however if you downgrade via fxz to 4.1.2 then you'll able to run the msm 8960 builds currently there are more choices once downgraded.
