I have the ATT 16G S4 variant. The device is rooted, sim unlocked, and has a twrp recovery. Two questions,
1. I have made a back up in twrp for boot, system, and data. But I do not see an option to back up the stock kernel. So how do I make a back up for my stock kernel? Or is the stock kernel already backed up as part of system?
Now I want to try running the Omega custom rom on it. I know I have to also flash a tw based locki patched kernel for my att variant since the bootloader is locked.
2 What is the best kernel for running Omega on ATT?
Thanks!
Your kernel is backed up with the boot when performing a nandroid. But "best"of threads are against xda rules man. Gotta try for yourself

Right, I meant, what are some of the tw based kernels which will run smoothly with Omega rom on my att device?
Not sure. There is only two kernels for tw and im pretty sure it says in in the link below you have to use a specific one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41834056
Edit. It says must use loki kernel. I skimmed over the faux kernel thread and didnt see anything about it being loki'd
So use KT kernel

I read that Adam and faux both work on ATT as well. I am on KT right now. I'll give the other two a try later. To see which one I like best.
Thanks!

All of them work perfect, each phone and what you run on your phone affects how the kernel will work for you...try each one, give 24hrs per kernel to see if battery results and such are for you.
Good luck

Thanks! I have been on KT for the past couple of days. Everything seems fine so far. I will try Adam and Faux in the weeks to come. I did notice the phone heats up pretty quickly after using the swipe to capture screenshot function. Is that normal?
Where can I find the Adam kernel download for AT&T S4?

You don't need to follow the Loki recovery instructions since your bootloader is already unlocked, just flash the ROM according to the OP instructions.

If you're not up to speed then I recommend searching the forum before asking lol :silly:
Anyways no, you don't run Loki-fied files on the canadian variants. Also I believe Task650 isn't loki-fying his ROM anymore and is strictly leaving it up to OUDHS Recov to apply the loki patch. If this is the case, all you need to do is use TWRP and flash the ROM. Again though I can't say for sure and you're gonna have to actually read his thread.

The aboot.img in the ROM MUST be patched for it to run on ATT phones. It doesn't matter either way with a Canadian variant.

It's all good man. We ATT folks can also run non-patched ROMs but must flash a patched kernel just afterwards.

Yep, also doesn't OUDHS Recovery automatically loki patch flashed files now? If this is the case then we won't even need to loki patch a darn thing, just flash and be on our marry way

ATM no it doesn't, the ROM still needs patching. For ROMs like CM and SLIM, they are working on a way for them to be patched automatically for their nightlies / weeklys.
I just read a couple of posts by peeps saying that at the moment Task's rom will still not work on Canadian variant....

So would we (canadian users) have issues trying to flash the roms that rely on auto loki? Is there any chance of brick or things like that or is it relatively safe to just try it and see?

I honestly see no reason why it can't be flashed to a Canadian S4. Task usually only supports his carrier though.
Also, if bricking were an issue, I'm pretty sure it would be a huge disclaimer in the Loki FAQ

ATM, an ATT phone must be running a Loki recovery, and the ROM must be Loki patched, unless you flash non-Loki ROM, then a Loki Kernel.
Flashing a Loki ROM to a Canadian phone will bootloop. I will try to ask Task about his ROM.
@Manufactured consent
Since your bootloader is unlocked, and I see no mention of Task's ROM being Loki patched, you should just be able to flash it.
You can flash it but it won't be supported. Task won't support anything he can't test. Questions about it just derails the thread.

I would like to hear everyones experience with this,
I remember reading someone did it and had it working,
so any details would ne nice, so that everyone can get a new set of roms!
because everyone knows how limited us sprint folk are, I mean we have like what? 8 or 9 roms?
we need more bad!!
You can run i9505 roms, and I am sure others, I have someone testing it with sprint, but he has been gone for a few days, I suppose....follow my guide, it does not have sprint listed yet, but the concept is the same, in short start off by flashing the rom you want, and before you boot, flash a sprint kernel, then tweak the rest...

well, more info would help
what rom you on
what build number
it is the i337 att--right?
what twrp version you on and has it worked before for you or is this the first time you used twrp
i don't see a KT kernel with that name on this site or i9505 site
We understand that you are new at this. But you need to be more clear with us so we can provide help. You are holding a $650 phone and entrusting us with helping you modify it. More info is needed and more research is needed on your part. You need to be fully aware that you could end up with a expensive paperweight if something wee to go wrong. I tell this to most new comers. Rooting and custom ROMs are great. But not in the hands of someone that had no real idea of the consequences.

Here's the problem. You have incorrect punctuation in your post. Leads us to believe you have an i337 where from your other posts you say you have a i337m.
You need TMO kernels not one from "this" site
Maybe reflash your recovery, and still need to know what rom you are on as KT has kernels for TW and AOSP. I don't see any listings for "mri" so a link would help.
If you are doing things off the web--stop--and start using XDA for your info and downloads.
There are good Guides here to get you started.
Seems like when you have an issue you just ask someone for the solution, from reading your posts anyway--?
As graydiggy said, lots of reading required here to protect your investment--

I've not had good luck with custom or source kernels. I use oudhs recovery and do a backup within recovery before flashing a kernel. The only combination my phone behaves with is stock kernel. I don't know why nor do I have any speculations. My phone just doesn't work right with custom or source built kernels. The phone either heats up fast or the Google keyboard I use starts acting flaky, so that's why I stay stock rooted hotspot mod with custom recovery. This phone is a totally different beast than my s2.

I agree. S4 acts way different than my S3 as far as flashing things go. Seems the S4 is way more sensitive and does some wonky stuff sometimes.

First, download a custom kernel such as Chronic or KTweaker, then nandroid, wipe caches, flash the kernel zip, fix permissions, and reboot. ROMs come with their own kernels; to get your original kernel back, just reflash your ROM.

What ROM/kernel combinations do you use? The only buggy kernel I've used is KTweaker. On Carbon 4.3, it reboots whenever my phone attempts to stream video. It may help to change your governor, especially if the kernel's default is Interactive.

Hello all. As I wrote in my title, I'm just coming back to the s4 after being gone for about a month. I've flashed a few roms and I've noticed that data stops working on almost all the ones I've tried. I tried the Google edition and flashed a different kernel to get WiFi working--when I did WiFi worked but data was broken. Then I tried tri force, data did not work. Finally I tried the one with the weird name (sorry--I know that doesn't help much but I know viper appears in quite a few places in the thread). I am currently on liquid smooth (cm based 10.1) and thankfully it's flawless. I love it but I like variety and I wish I could find a debloated TW rom to play around with. Why it's the data borked on so many of them? I'm not exactly a noob--been an android user for years and I've flashed many a roms. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, unless there's something different or weird with the s4. Can anyone kindly shed some light on my predicament? I'm now downloading negalite. Gonna see if that one has functioning data. It almost seems as tho you have to flash a custom kernel all the time now to get data. Is this right? Thanks in advance!

I have no idea why as I've tried everything I can think of and read but aosp runs better on my S4 than tw, as crazy as that sounds its been true for me. I love Aosp so I'm good. I'm on mf9 via otas and tried all recoveries made and always end up with some type of system or phone fc or the "detected an app".. .blah blah warning which annoys the crap outa me so I just stay on aosp as there are a ton of great ones for us and they work wonderfully -the once in a while call bug which I do not come across that much really ams when I do I made a shortcut for fast reboot via rom toolbox and just hit it when it happens and its good.

Just FYI.....If you flash a TW MF9 rom with the stock kernel and WiFi is broken after boot (can and has happened with Negalite, TriForce, etc) there is a modified stock kernel that can be flashed to fix if needed.
