Possibility of GPU OC @ more than 487mhz? - Oppo Find 5

Well, as we all know, the the Adreno 320 on the s4 pro is barely capable enough for our device's resolution.
A lot of new games like Dead trigger 2 and Dead effect are struggling to provide decent framerates. Over clocking the cpu does not improve
anything. (I disabled thermal throttling to ensure the processors are not being throttled down)
So, we do need more Graphics prowess.
If thermal problems will arise by doing so, why don't we just UC the cpu and OC the GPU? Then do a mild undervolt.
Well, do you guys think the same as I do?
Will you not find it awesome to see devs implementing GPU OC of more than
487mhz? Or is it just not possible hardware wise?
Let's all talk about it here.

It seems like Riptide GP 2 is struggling as well, and it's not even at max settings..

How high fps do you get in dead trigger 2?
EDIT:
Just tried one level in that game, and the average FPS was 48.
Thats on stock cpu/gpu clock and no uv or ov, and with thermald enabled.

yeah well on my Xperia Z (s4 pro too) there is a kernel with 627 mhz gpu oc, but for what?
This chipset only has a lot heating problems,no performance problems, nuff' more.

I forgot to mention that it is perfectly playable on default settings, try enabling the "Very high" settings from options and you'll understand why I made this thread in the first place. (on dead trigger 2 and dead effect)

Why don't you try download DT2 and repeat the steps above?
I assure you, the frame rates will be choppy enough for you to tone down the settings again.

Very high settings are clearly intended for a higher end phone then.

Oc a mobile phone should never be done. There is a reason why Qualcomm limits the CPU and GPU to those MHz and since that is almost the only thing that will break the warranty on find 5 I really hope oc as high as that won't happens. I really think that the oc that's made for now is as high as it should be and future improvements needs to be found else where

That's way to much I think , stock GPU freq is 320 MHz iirc always remember its a phone , not a pc also the limitations will be the SoC at the end but it should be able to improve a bit without a higher freq, will test that game again later on to see what freq I can do at that settings

The best performance rom+kernel.

Hello guys.
I`m new to N7. I have installed Motley kernel and ParanoidAndroid. I`m wondering if i can get better performance on 1.6 Ghz. (14100 in Antutu-How much is your?)The kernel is perfect for me but i think ParanoidAndoid has not the best performance. Can someone suggest me a rom?

performance would depend on tbe kernel. trinity kernel is a performance kernel(since you brought up antutu, 16400 here). rom wise, rasbean jelly is a great rom to match up with a performance kernel.

you should figure out how to bench properly before comparing benchmarks. so no, not interesting. you get a wide variety of scores when you let the device scale. quadrant doesnt toll the cpu enough, and you might have only tested one or two cores at a lower cpu. rasbean jelly and trinity, isnt that intetesting :silly:

I have 4 question : Does rasberry have tablet ui? How can i test the cpu at the max? Performance governor? (It does the same as intreractive) Why do you have such a high I/O score? I have about 1800. What vesion of N7 do you have? And you have 3 times better score at 2D.
OK 2D score boosted by enabling Force GPU rendering. What about I/O?

1. rasbean jelly does not have tablet ui
2. set the cpu at top speed for the highest and top speed for the lowest.
3. i prefer ondemand/deadline. performance governor is terrible.
4. turn off fsync for higher i/o(in the filesystem or with a cpu control app. i use the trimity kernel toolbox. and run the ext4 mount script for extra i/o(the trinity kernel toolbox automatically runs the ext4 mount script when opened the first time, but you need to disable fsync manually).
5. go to the devices main settings, developer options, enable force gpu rendering for a higher 2D score.
6. i have a wifi only n7, 16gb.
7. youll need an app to disable tegra hotplug and enable all four cores if you want to go that route. the kernel would have to support it. trinity does, im not sure about motley(i think it does too). many benchmarks dont toll the quadcore enough to get accurate results. so you have to make sure that all 4 cores are used.
8. you can overclock or underclock the gpu with trinity kernel also.
What file in system i have to edit to run a command when its booting. I remember it was hw_config.sh in GingerBread ROMs... But i cant find it now...

you need init.d files to run scripts upon bootup. not all roms support init.d scripts(rasbean doesnt), but there are flashable mods to give roms init.d support.

my guess is that youre getting thermal throttled. find a way, like a fan, to cool off your device while benchmarking(dont stick it in a fridge as condensation in the device can ruin it). heres my last antutu..

btw, a while back there was a 2ghz kernel which almost no one could run at 2ghz. i hit 8998 in quadrant, almost 9000!

yours gos hotter. are you looking at cpu temp or your battery temp? 37C is body temperature, its not hot at all. your cpu will get hotter even, 45C is cool for the cpu, especially when pushing it. i can easily get it to the cpu shutdown temp if i want to, cpu shutdown is at 100C. cpu temp you need an app to see, battery temp is listed in settings.

no, its just the stock navbar within the system ui, the search and menu soft buttons are inside of the system ui, just not linked to the navbar. so in theory, to add those 2 buttons, i would have to go to the xml files and copy the instance where the back button is but change all references to back/menu. I was going to focus most of my development time on these mods but the 3.0 kernel source was released yesterday so i am working on a custom kernel. This means fully working ics roms. I am adding overclocking to 1.9 ghz, and some governers, the usual stuff.

the highest I have gotten it to go [while being ULV'ed] was 1.35Ghz
after being pushed any higher is would freeze and bootloop
really badly. This was when the Thunderbolt came
out and it still had Gingerbread with custom kernel.
I was able to get GB up to 1.6 by overvolting but like I said. You can fry it. Now if I go up that high it locks up instantly. Tbh oc up to 1.9 won't do you much good except drain the battery or screw the phone up permanently.

Totally agree.
I think the only reason you should have it that high is the "wow factor"
Now having it Under-Volted just a smidge is what I have always used..
You can't actually screw up your phone from oc'ing it, only ov'ing. Worst case scenario, it gets hot, freezes, and reboots... And you're right where you were before. I'm running mine at 1766 right now, all of our processors handle over clocking differently
Edit: running steady at 1920

Everyones processor has a different amount of wear and tear, the previous owner of my bolt never overclocked past 1.2 ghz so i can easilly run mine at 1.7 ghz stable, the option for 1.9 is there for those who can handle it

You indeed can ruin your processor running oc. It was intended to run at 1ghz and running oc at any level over what it was intended will shorten the life of if substantially. Lets not confuse people about that fact. It can be harmful for your processor.

I agree that it can shorten the life of your processor and ware it but your statement made it sound like if you select anything over 1.5 will instantly kill your cpu. That can happen with computers but in android if its clocked too high for the cpu to handle, the kernel panic makes it reboot so your processor doesnt in fact "fry itself".

Mine runs at 1.2ghz stock, since the JB update. I believe that these cpus are actually meant to run at 1.2ghz, but were under-clocked when released. So running at 1.3 or 1.4 ghz is really not pushing it.

I have always been an avid OC'er on any machine I have ever owned..
BUT just because -I- could not over-clock it higher didn't mean it was
a crappy kernel.. ALL phones are made differently no matter if it is the
same hardware profile or not...

I had a Samsung Moment and found this information out
it was a stock stocked at 600Mhz SPRINT OC'ed it to 800Mhz and
it could be OC'ed to 1.12Ghz without it freezing or being unstable.
So I know exactly what you are talking about when you said this..

[TIP] Increase gaming performance

The N7 is an amazing tablet, but lets face it, the S4 Pro and Adreno 320 GPU really aren't up to the task when it comes to gaming on such a high resolution screen. Graphically intensive games just don't run as well as they should. So I did some digging and testing, and found an app that lets you lower your screen resolution, thus decreasing the strain on the GPU and increasing gaming performance. When changing the resolution to 800x1280, I found a noticeble increase in framerate in 3D games such as Riptide GP 1+2, NOVA 3, and Modern Combat 5, and the games still look great. You're not going to want to leave the resolution set that low all the time because it does make everything else look pretty bad, but when you're going to play a game, it only takes a second to set the resolution and start playing. It's a paid app (there are free ones that do the same thing, but I've had the best luck with this one), but considering the gains, it's worth every penny of the $1.99 asking price. I wonder how this works? It appears you can change the resolution and the DPI seperately. I wonder if this has a development thread somewhere?
Resolution is a ridiculous game these days. 1080P on a 7" screen is crazy. I have 1080P on my 50" TV. The old Nexus 7 2012 had a great resolution for the size. Additional resolution is just wasted resources.

Resolution is a ridiculous game these days. 1080P on a 7" screen is crazy. I have 1080P on my 50" TV. The old Nexus 7 2012 had a great resolution for the size. Additional resolution is just wasted resources.

All I did was change resolution, the app changed the DPI to 213 automatically when I changed the res. And it is system wide so it's not something you are going to want to set and leave at all times because you definitely can see it everywhere else. I change it before playing and change it back when I'm done.
My advice ist to use the phenomal Glitch Kernel, with that you can oc your GPU. This performance game perfomance is phantastic with 600mhz.

I don't think our tablet is old for today's games yet. If the SoC was really an S4 Pro, than it would have come with an Adreno 320 which has 24 work pipes (something like parallel processor design which directly effects parallel processing and high resolution picturing, experts will explain better). But this SoC is actually a Snapdragon S600 which comes with a 32 work piped Adreno 320.
The S4 Pro is designed for 720p screens but this one is prepared for 1080p.
Besides, it's possible to OC it to almost 650MHz from 400 (the day this is necessary will come soon I guess).
PS: somehow lollipop seems to have trouble in games even though it is way better at everything else..

This came from necessity, I play a ton of games and the N7 doesn't handle the big ones as well as I'd like it to. I never would have looked into this if it ran them perfectly. But I am also 100% stock, so I haven't tried OC'ing the GPU. Honestly, last night when I did this the thought to flash a custom kernel and OC the GPU didn't even cross my mind.

What app are you using to change the settings? TricksterMod or FauxClock? Flashing the kernel now.
And what L2/Cache OC setting do you recommend?
Edit: I'm still on 4.4.4 and there's two options for the latest kitkat kernel- 226 and 226 disabled AVS, do you know which one I should flash?

This kernel comes with an Aroma installer, so you can set directly the settings you want during the installer. No need for a kernel manager app.
I recommend the settings that i get from Tk-Glitch, CPU 1,7 GHz with glitchy OC Bus, GPU 600mhz and undervolt-150mV.

They run fine, but some graphically intensive games don't have smooth framerates. Yours may be wonderful, but I know I'm not the only person on the planet that thinks there's room for improvement.

Yes, i use -150mV for GPU. In my case, i don't usw MC power savings, so let it unchecked.

I will try to experiment with all the settings, one step at a time as your settings freeze my tablet after a few seconds after launching a game. You are lucky to be have it stable with those settings

Tried even with no GPU undervolting and still froze. I figured out that 545 is the maximum my GPU can handle, dunno if this is stable in the long run ( -100mV, 10minutes of testing)

Maximizing the X Play - GeekBrnch3

Hi all,
I've recently installed the overclocked kernel from squid and am having some trouble reaching the same benchmarks that he has hit. I am running stock MM with row 128 I/O and adreno-tz on the GPU. CPU is lionfish with min frequencies 800 on both clusters. I think squid is running CM13.
I consistently score between 680-740 single and 2680-2800 multi. Does this look about right for stock MM with the overlooked kernel?
Any help maximizing this would be greatly appreciated. I know these scores have (probably) very little to do with real-world use but if I can get more out of my device then why not.

Hey pal. Thanks for your feedback. Nice to see your response. I'll try it out as you suggest. I've been running a bunch of tests and it's looking like I hover around 740-50 single and 2700-50 multi. I've changed the configuration to default squid, so interactive governor and aggressive frequency settings. Needless to say the performance sure is snappy. Hahaha.
I'll likely revert to lionfish 800 on both clusters but this interactive snappiness is tempting...
Exactly 700 and 2700 with the oc kernel, stock brazil mm. Not even kidding. Although i sincerely doubt anything but a "native" extension can accurately measure a device performance, there is too much virtual machine and abstractions between hardware and software. Then again, this limitation applies to almost all apps, eg the normal usecase...

Yeah does it ever. Stock gives me max 770 single 2815 multi. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of ROM switching to get those extra points. Would I really see the performance difference?
Although I am tempted to try a new ROM. Would be fun...so long as I use Titanium Backup properly. Hahaha

If you are happy with stock don't bother as you won't even notice those extra points in the benchmark. I changed roms for the extra features and cm themes and i was getting random lag until i changed to interactive and row, now is very smooth and zero lag

Interactive is a great governor yeah. Thanks for your response regarding the ROM. I hear that CM13 is still a little shaky on the X Play but maybe I'll try the next release just to compare. I'll try a full discharge from 100% with default squid's OC kernel values. If I can still get >7 hours SOT with that setup and snappy performance I'll be thrilled.

This is miniscule difference. It doesn't create a great performance difference between stock and custom Roms. The benchmarks most of the time shows the raw power of the device but the optimisation of the software also is needed.
You can try custom Roms to get extra functionality but there are still bugs in them.

Nicely said. Performance and stability are key for me. Battery life too. Haha. I just love the X Play for that battery. 5 hours SOT and 21%. So lovely.
I had carefully tuned CM13 to get the best performance out of this device, so it and derivatives will give better performance than the defaults in stock. Looks interesting. I think CM13 is definitely worth a look. I think I'll try the next release. Thanks for explaining the customizations/optimizations you've done.
Frankly, i couldn't care less about some number a synthetic benchmark spits out. The number 1 consideration is how long the battery lasts, then (a long way off) how quickly "heavy" apps such as firefox launch. Last i read CM13 isn't as good as stock at conserving power.

Battery life is quintessential for me, too. I was hoping to strike a balance between performance and battery (hence the Optimal Setup thread) and am still trying to discern what the best setup is to meet my requirements.
I'd like to try a custom ROM at some point, but that's my curiosity more than anything.
Battery life on the X Play can't be beat! That's why I got it.
Moto x play is no slough, I just ran a test between my nexus 6 and MXP,
Most apps actually open faster on the moto x.
Scrolling through Web pages and g+ the nexus 6 is smoother

Yep. I'd expect that. Still though - if properly customized this phone can really fly.

Terrible performance in games

I have an h918 on Tmobile. Recently i've noticed that any high end games I try to play turn into slideshows after a few minutes.
Yesterday I replaced the CPU thermal paste with Arctic Silver and changed my thermal conf file.
I get a better score in benchmarks, but still get the slideshow after a few minutes. One main example is Order and Chaos 2.
I've got all settings on low also. The rest of the phone is very fast though...Anybody have a fix?

Went from 120k to 158k in Antutu after thermal paste change.
Edit: Now running with little cores on Performance and big on blu_active. Max gpu clock at 624mhz.
I also tried setting max background processes to 1 in dev options.

Are you rooted? If yes then install kernel adiutor and check your max gpu cloock speed. Mine drop to 316mhz whenever the phone gets hot, but setting it to max clock speed (624mhz) prior to opening games works for me.

You should use the mk2000 BTTF kernel if you aren't already, set your big cores to blu_active governor and your LITTTLE cores to performance. Make sure Max GPU clock is 624mhz and then run games and report back. This is the exact setting I use on my H918 running alpha rom and PUBG runs very smooth at 50-60FPS, phone barely gets hot and I've not even done any thermal paste mods.
I am rooted and on that mk2000 kernel too.
I tried doing these settings and it started off working great... I thought it was fixed.
After about 10 minutes it dropped back down to 3-5 fps and back to a slideshow afterwards.
My phone doesn't even feel hot either... so weird.

I know dude this sucks.... one guy on my ROMs thread suggested that maybe I didn't put enough paste on.
What I used was a little old too. So i ordered a new tube from Amazon and will reapply tonight. Maybe that will help.

The set_points for CPUs are 85/65 under most sections.
Under [Kryo_SS] the set_point is 40/38.5.
I couldn't find a definition for Kryo_SS and those values are half of the others. Could this be my issue?
Also tested on different games such as Nitro Nation 6. I got an app that shows temps in the status bar and its between 50c-71c.

Sounds to me like a faulty phone. I would consider myself a hard core mobile gamer and my v20 runs a like a champ. I run games like pubg and everything is fine. I do use l speed and set it to gaming and performance for that extra kick.

Okay so last night I applied a different thermal compound. The one I used is for low contact pressure CPUs.
This stuff was like mercury, so runny.
I wiped my device and did a clean install of my ROM. Now everything seems to be great...
So... It was either not enough paste, bad paste or something with an app.

His phone clearly is locked at 1.47GHz and not at 2+ which is why you see the steady difference. the MIPS should be 65+ in throttling test.
Mine on lineage 15.1 stays at 55-60 too at 1.1GHz even after thermal paste change. Probably something bad with the kernel. I even set governors to userspace or ondemand but it doesn't do anything. Even set big cores minimum clock to 1.5GHz still it locks at 1.1GHz.

Trying this out after changing my thermal paste again since I put too much the 1st time. Is anyone else getting conflicting results from CPU temp apps? I've tried like 4 apps so far including the one the OP had in his status bar and every single app has shown a different temp for the CPU. Anyone have any input? I'm not well versed in sensors and stuff so maybe 1 app is pulling info from a different sensor than what the other app is showing???
Same here friend. I have an LS997 and it is terible at gaming. For PUBG Mobile, at first I can play it with balance graphic, medium frame rate. After few minutes, the phone becomes hot and game is turn to slow-motion mode.
Since I don't have root so the only thing I expect is Oreo would solved the issue. However, issue still persists

Well of course your getting better temps your using Liquid Metal for cooling, which is normally used on de-lidding high-end Intel CPU's for PC's to make them run considerably cooler...normally a difference of 10-15c on that alone...I'm gonna use Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut cause I'm cheap lol
