[Q] How Backup Before Rooting?

hi there guys
i have just bought a new s4 and currently im a noob in android and would be very thankfull if you can answer two questions regarding backup and restore:
1.is it possible to backup my stock rom wich i recieved with my s4 in cmw before rooting the device?
2. does restoring a rom wich you backed up after rooting will gain you automaticly root access when in restoring it? (superuser and the premissions will be installed and activated automaticly?)

Hi,
1 .Yes ,you can backup your entire system with the recovery backup.
2. If you back up a rooted system,it will restore as a rooted system.

thanks alot for your help! i was just reading that after installing CWM on the galaxy i wownt be able to recieve OTA updates even before rooting?
my whole plan was to backup my current rom (stock rom that i recieved my phone with) and then root it. wanted this for the abilitiy to restore in the future back to my stock rom without rooting in order to obtain ota software updates.
how can this be done?

Hi,
Look HERE
Your best plan would be to install a recovery,backup your system,and then return it to an "Official" rooted system with the link I gave you.
On the thread there is a link for a stock recovery to return you to stock and be able to receive updates.
The thread I gave you ,the [OP] is constantly updating his ROMS,so you will not lose out on updates anyway.

thanks for that tutorial but im on i9500 so i guess its not for me.
i have on other hand found and downloaded the exact stock rom of my s4 to my pc from a local android website
so if something goes wrong and i need warrenty will flashing the stock rom wich i have download via odin after rooting via cwm will remove them completly? (will remove the cwm and root after flashing via odin?)

Hi,
It depends whether the stock ROM contains stock recovery.
I doubt it.
You will probably have to find a stock recovery somewhere.

Yes. Official Stock rom contains stock recovery.

thanks for the help guys, regarding root i have read about cf-auto-root but once it has the stock recovery i wouldnt be able to flash any custom roms in the furute so i have thought to root with cofface cwm : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262110
his cwm looks very popular and has ability for root/unroot feature. the unroot in cwm by cofface wownt do the work for me if needed?

have spent the last day boning up on rooting my t-mobile s4 4.3 and still feel that i have too many questions, and i consider myself pretty tech savvy, at least in terms of pcs! anyway i'm someone could help me with the following questions:
1. can i take a snapshot of my current (stock) setup before i root, which i would be able to reload in the event i find rooting is not for me? i'm talking about a backup, image or snapshot of everything that's now on my phone which i can restore if needed, returning my phone to it's exact state before i rooted?
2. when i root my phone will it delete such things as my contacts, photos, apps, etc? or will that only happen when a custom rom is installed after rooting? if the latter, i'm guessing i could do a full phone backup after rooting using something like titanium, and the flash a custom rom which would give me a clean os, free of all samsung's and t-mobile's bloatware? and if i decided a rooted phone wasn't for me, i could restore the backup of my original phone using titanium?
3. when i root my phone and install a clean, bloat-free os, what sort of thing will no longer be possible in terms of my provider's (tmobile) services? for example i guess i would no longer get automatic ota's? how about tmobile notifications or the like? will tmobile be able to access my rooted phone as they are able to do now? and if not are there any disadvantages to this? i'm guessing there are more advantages to this.
4. so once my phoned is rooted and a new rom flashed, is it a relatively easy process to reload all of my contacts, photos and settings?
5. and, finally, someone recommended that i use the rotting steps outlined at galaxys4root.com, do you agree?

Hello all!
I have the following current set-up:
GT-I9505
Droid: 4.2.2
Baseband: I9505XXUAMDM
Kernel: 3.4.0-526204, [email protected] 1
Recovery: pHILZ
So I have just powered into Philz and selected to a backup and here my questions begin:
Where is the backup located ?
Should I also leave it on the phone (takes up just under 2gb) ?
What custom rom is the best (state your reasons) ?
My device just told me there is an update avalible, however I can't get it due to being on a modified phone Any ideas?
What can be safely removed from the apps (Samsung stuff, google play books etc?)

Definitively yes, so you have it ready if you mess up with something on your phone and you are far from a computer.
I make frequent backups, and I delete the previous one once the new one is finished.

Just try some of the available ones and see which one suits you best.
Such question is forbidden on XDA.
As for the official updates, you can't apply them to your device since you flashed things on it. You have to revert back to official firmware and erase the flash counter. Or wait for the official firmware to be used in a custom flashable ROM...

I was asking people personal opinion, You should know that this forum is a mess and it's not that easy to find answers to some questions, also like I say this was asking peoples personal opinions, Don't surf the Q & A section if you have no intent on helping The amount of keyboard warriors that just post "Use the search" to boost there post count is untrue!
I tried searching but didn't get the answers I needed, I understand some people just post without searching, but I assure you thats not the case here

Ok no worries thanks for the reply, I am gonna give Cyanogen a shot and see how it feels

It is official, but you have to get your official status back and reset flashing counter (step 3 of the guide you followed : "If you want, after rooting with odin, to get official status and reset binary counter ON I9505 for warranty reason, do it before flashing stock firmware, refer to this link").

custom rom installation question

Hello,
i m having problems with getting a custom rom to work.
its a AT&T Galaxy S4
I337
Baseband MK2
i rooted the phone....then installed safestrap....
went into safestrap and created a backup. and then installed one of the following files (after each other) on the phone.
aokp_4.3_jflteatt_task650_10.22.2013.zip
CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20130906-0328-jflteatt (1).zip
pa_jflteatt-BETA-3.99-RC2-20130922.zip
The Task 650 showed the horse head for a second but went into a thousand blinking lights afterwards.
the Carbot didnt do anything.
and paranoid android showed the shark head loading screen but didnt move on from there.
so none of these 3 worked and i always had to restore the backup.
am i using the wrong roms? am i missing a step? if you could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you trying to flash roms if you don't know what they are? Or what base they are to begin with? What are your long term goals of having a custom rom?

Needing a straight forward answer on Root/Custom ROMs

Hi everyone,
Just spent the best part of 2 hours wondering how I go about installing some kind of custom recovery on my wife's Note 3 (SN9005) so I can run SlimKat on it.
It's currently running MJ7 firmware.
Question: Can this phone have a custom recovery installed so I can flash a different ROM?
I understand that the bootloader is "locked", but it seems that I can still go on my merry way and install a custom recovery and ROM, but Knox will flag that I've changed it.
Can someone please explain to me my options if that's ok?

Install ROM Toolbox Pro from the Google play store. You can get recovery installation within that.

How do you manage to think that?
Doesn't that just install a ROM? I didn't think it'd somehow install a different Recovery partition or anything. You'd need Root before installing Rom Toolbox Pro first though, so I'd need to find the best/easiest way to gain Root Access on this handset first.

Bootloader is not locked. Just install CWM/TWRP using Odin, then boot into recovery and flash your ROM.
Knox will be broken, but otherwise you should be fine.

My Knox was broken first day I had the phone. Was a wonderful thing I did.

How t re-lock the device again?

Hi guys,
I did root my device recently, is there any way to re-lock it again as I need to bring it back to the company?

Flash the latest firmware using Odin or initialize using smart switch. This will wipe the the data on the phone.

Stop making a post on this, multiple threads here that talk about fixing this.

Do you mean the rooted rom or the rom you have after the reset. You could backup using flashfire if rooted. Smart switch works for non rooted devices and rooted devices but will not backup app data.

Bump to top. When I flashed latest firmware it still shows the pad lock and custom
Any ideas? If possible to go completely stock?

Did you try reading post #2?
Re-flash the original firmware. It won't be rooted if successful. Therefore it would be completely stock again.
