Hello,
i m having problems with getting a custom rom to work.
its a AT&T Galaxy S4
I337
Baseband MK2
i rooted the phone....then installed safestrap....
went into safestrap and created a backup. and then installed one of the following files (after each other) on the phone.
aokp_4.3_jflteatt_task650_10.22.2013.zip
CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20130906-0328-jflteatt (1).zip
pa_jflteatt-BETA-3.99-RC2-20130922.zip
The Task 650 showed the horse head for a second but went into a thousand blinking lights afterwards.
the Carbot didnt do anything.
and paranoid android showed the shark head loading screen but didnt move on from there.
so none of these 3 worked and i always had to restore the backup.
am i using the wrong roms? am i missing a step? if you could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
Ben

Start here and use stock based.
Sorry, forgot the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42266401
Why are you trying to flash roms if you don't know what they are? Or what base they are to begin with? What are your long term goals of having a custom rom?

Ok so im a total noob when it comes to this and i would like to root my phone, put a custom rom on it maybe either pac rom or like cyanogenmod 11, and if i can get 4.4 kikkat and get rid of bloatware if i can even do that like idk how this all works...so if anyone could help me with step by step on how to root then back up then put a custom rom that would be absolutely great!

What firmware are you running? If you want help you need to provide more information. If you are on mf3 or mk2 you can not flash any Cyanogenmod based roms. You need to slow down, search XDA & read the threads before you flash something and brick your phone.

You can not flash those roms on your phone!
Here is the guide for your mk2 S4. Please read it. It will explain how to root, install Safestrap recovery (NO TWRP or CWM), and has a list of Touchwiz roms that are compatible for our beloved S4.

Please thank the op in the threads. So many people have put a lot of work into this guide to help us. Good luck & post your progress.
Hello all,
I picked up a Galaxy S4 when ATnt discounted a "certified new" off contract device for $190 a few weeks back.
I upgraded it from my nexus 4 and well.. I just prefer the look of stock android, however the better screen, battery life and LTE are great reasons to upgrade.
I was wondering if there was a 4.4.2 KitKat rom for this device ( SGH-i337 ) that will resemble the look and feel of my Nexus4.
My device has the latest bootloader so the LOKI method will not work
Thanks for the input.
EDIT: my device is rooted with safestrap installed on the latest OTA

Blackbox 3.0 or Purified/Goldeneye with Domination theme are the closest you can get to AOSP.

I would also keep an eye on Eclipse rom. It is the only Touchwiz/AOSP hybrid rom that actually has an authentic AOSP pull-down and notification. It also has a whole bunch of AOSP stuff. The kitkat version of the rom will be released soon I think.

Make sure you follow the instructions from this thread.
Scroll down the the 4.4.2 rom section and there is a step by step how-to.
More importantly, make sure you're installing only Touchwiz-based roms, since you're bootloader locked and on safestrap.

I'm trying to install a custom rom onto my ATT Galaxy S4. I have Safestrap installed and I can boot to the recovery.
I've tried putting BeanStalk on it and it shows the "SafeStrap Enabled" and then shuts off. So then I did some more searching and put ProjectChaos on it. It'll boot to the custom bootlogo that I've chosen and it just stays there. It won't go past that.
I don't exactly know what I'm doing wrong here...
Can anyone give me any insight?

I don't know about ProjectChaos, but thought Beanstalk was CM based. You can't run CM/AOSP roms. Only TW based with TW kernels--
Check out Mapleleaf rom.... it is tw based and runs beautifully with the googy-max kernel....dumb question but you are wiping between rom changes right?

I am assuming ProjectChaos is TW, I got it installed and it's running nicely.
The only problem I've had thus far (I just got it installed a few hours ago) is when it boots up it says "com.android.phone" has stopped when it boots up.
I had to go back into SS and Fix Permissions and rewipe cache, etc. because I was having a reboot issue. But that solved that.
Thanks for the help everyone!!

Hi all, I am fairly new to this whole rooting process for android devices, since i have just recently purchased a galaxy s4 from at&t. Just a few days ago, i've decided to root my device, and after hours of researching i came across geohot's towelroot program and successfully rooted my GS4!. Now i want to install a custom rom, and i would like to know what kind of custom recovery can i use? and am i able to install the cyanogenmod 11? I have downloaded the cyanogenmod installer and it says my device is not supported, but i read on their wiki that i can install it manually but i don't know if my current build is supported by Clockworkmod, or even TWRP for that matter. I havn't flashed any roms by the way and i don't plan on doing so until i am almost certain that i can flash it without bricking.
I am running kitkat 4.4.2 Samsung SGH-I337, my baseband/build number is I337UCUFNC1
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!
We have a locked bootloader. So, stock kernel and recovery cannot be replaced. The only recovery we have is safestrap.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
Ahh that sucks thanks for the info. Hopefully they will find a way to unlock it in the future so I can install the cyanogenmod.

Hi All,
Appreciate the guides and community here. Looking for a little help on my ATT S4 KitKat 4.4.2. It's rooted via Towelroot.
I want to run a custom rom that isn't slow. I have Odin, proper Samsung USB drivers.
1) Can CNW be used on my phone to boot to recovery? If not, what are the alternatives and how do I use them (is there a guide you can share)?
2) Do I have NC1 on my phone, what the heck is NC2, NC1-what does this mean, is it relevant?
Thanks all
-Christian
If you have updated your phone to the att 4.4.2 firmware then you should be on NC1 which means you cannot put cwm or any CM rom. The only recovery you can use is safestrap. After that you can only flash rooms the specifically say safestrap compatible and you must flash the att_nc1 module after flashing rom for WiFi to work. Read the safestrap thread under the development section before doing anything.

Yes, I would also read over All Things ATT/MK2 etc in General--:good:
Those numbers NC1 etc are your build version. Can be found under Settings/About Phone. It will dictate what you can and can't do on your phone--We have no NC2 yet. :good:

Thanks. I have nb1. No luck getting safe strap to take. Install completes but does not recognize status as installed or allow boot to recovery.
I have rooted, supersu, busybox, and no luck with safestrap. Any ideas.
Upon booting I notice an icon that looks like a unlocked lock beneath the samsung logo. Touching it does nothing...
Thanks for getting back to me

I don't use safestrap. So not sure. Did you wipe all including system. And flash to correct slot. Stock slot I believe. Use correct safestrap. Also need sellinux, spelling? The lock is suppose to be there if rooted. Read the last 20 pages of the hash code safestrap thread plus the op. And same on All Things ATT/MK2 in General. May give some ideas. ☺

Aha! Safestrap running and custom ROM installed. Is there an index comparing all Safestrap/Touchwiz based roms? Runnign SHO right now and it's pretty bland (resolution looks low too).
I'm looking for something like a stock nexus experience with WiFi tethering.
thanks for the help mates

Iam all for custom ROMS. I made one for the Tab3. If all you want is the stock Nexus experience, you could just download the Google Now Launcher which is Google release the AOSP launcher. Then if you want the individual AOSP apps, you can do a search here or a google search, and you will find XDA threads that provide the apps with installation instructions.
