I'm trying to install a custom rom onto my ATT Galaxy S4. I have Safestrap installed and I can boot to the recovery.
I've tried putting BeanStalk on it and it shows the "SafeStrap Enabled" and then shuts off. So then I did some more searching and put ProjectChaos on it. It'll boot to the custom bootlogo that I've chosen and it just stays there. It won't go past that.
I don't exactly know what I'm doing wrong here...
Can anyone give me any insight?

I don't know about ProjectChaos, but thought Beanstalk was CM based. You can't run CM/AOSP roms. Only TW based with TW kernels--
Check out Mapleleaf rom.... it is tw based and runs beautifully with the googy-max kernel....dumb question but you are wiping between rom changes right?

Yes I am.
I'll check out the links. I've been busy so I haven't been able to try anything just yet. I'll report back when I get to mess with it

I am assuming ProjectChaos is TW, I got it installed and it's running nicely.
The only problem I've had thus far (I just got it installed a few hours ago) is when it boots up it says "com.android.phone" has stopped when it boots up.
I had to go back into SS and Fix Permissions and rewipe cache, etc. because I was having a reboot issue. But that solved that.
Thanks for the help everyone!!

Anyone else have the issue of it just continuously trying to boot? I'm using the CWM auto-loki that's in the development section.
Reflashed it three more times. Now it freezes @ Samsung battery screen when charging, or if I wait long enough it'll unfreeze. Still loops at Slim Bean startup, what sucks though is that for one thing it mounts as an MTP device so it seems like it's on but just not initializing, another thing is that the original flash I was able to get to the slim bean battery charging screen (but obviously still couldn't turn it on)
Thinking it might be a kernel issue, since I installed ktoonsez's AOSP kernel when I installed it. Any recommendations of a kernel to use? I'm using the CWM recovery that has auto loki so, I could probably use ones made for 9500,9505, etc.
(Pasted this from the Slim Bean thread, haven't gotten an answer in like 5 hours and it's a little urgent xD. I'm on the AT&T S4 of course, any other information I'll be glad to provide. Hopefully this is just a simple fix)
I bet is related to the kernel. I have been using Slim Bean flawlessly, with none of the issues you mention. Using TWRP to flash and recover.

What kernel are you on then, just stock?
Stock Kernel.

I installed Slim Bean with Ktoon kernel and it worked fine. Just make sure to wipe system and the caches. It did take a little longer to boot the first time but after that it was all good.

Isn't ktoonsez kernel for a Touchwiz based ROM?
Slim Bean is AOSP, therefore i'm not sure they jive correctly, which would clearly explain the OP's problem.
EDIT: Didn't realize he updated an AOSP based Kernel. In anycase OP, I would still attempt using the stock kernel to see if you problems get fixed.

Patching a patched kerenel changes nothing. Dan said if you run loki on a patched recovery or kernel it just send the original to the output. Nothing happens.

I know someone else clarified this already, but when I downloaded Slim it actually wasn't Loki patched for whatever reason, and I couldn't boot without reinstalling stock. I did download the one in the right thread, it just didn't have a boot.lok in it for whatever reason. Anyways, I'm gonna try reflashing and wiping /system another time, wish me luck. I don't have the original kernel backed up though because I'm an idiot, so does anyone have a link to that? If not I could probably scour it out somewhere, but just wondering for convenience's sake.

In advanced restore boot is the kernel.
Download the ROM and addons again, you shouldnt have any issues... If you are currently on stock, do a comprehensive wipe, a manual format of system and data

Edit: Well, ****. Reinstalled stock with Odin and now no matter how many times I reboot I only have a status bar.. phone is fairly hot too. So, now I don't even have access to recovery ;-;

Oh my lord, thank you good sir. Slim Bean is up and working as of right now ^^;. May be a little bit before I apply a custom kernel though o.o
I installed safestrap 3.6 as explained in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448942
Everything worked fine, created a new slot with 3Gbyte size. However, I could ntot get custom ROM installed there. I copied ROM .zip file (CARBON-JB-1.8-jflteatt.zip) to internal SD card + gapps -jb-20130813-signed.zip. Got "installation completed" message for both ZIPs, and then :
Updating partition details...
E: Unable to mount internal storage. Got green "Successful" message under the window where all log messages were running.
Then when rebooting with newly-flashed ROM slot, the phone does not boot, it is stuck with back screen and the only way to get it back to life is to power-cycle it and boot into stock ROM slot.
Any idea what went wrong?
Phone details:

If you want a good GE 4.3 ROM, try this one:

That's what I use as my daily driver. It works great, and is an untouched 4.3 GE ROM, except for the kernel. You can customize it yourself if you want before you install it.

thanks for the pointers.
I've been trying many things to no avail. I am able to get recovery on my i9505G (which I have read is built into the CWM version now for the i9505) and it seems to work fine. I have the 01/08 nightly CM11 on the phone, but whenever I reboot and select "recovery" it gives me this error. Sometimes if I hit the restart the device, it will boot into recovery correctly. I've even started fresh by wiping the entire phone and the multiple partitions (from having started on 4.2) and flashed a fresh 4.4.2 stock (rooted) tar through odin. From there I flashed the recovery, installed CM as I always have, but it is still happening.
What am I doing wrong?

That is the weird thing, it does have the custom CWM recovery on it, but this happens when I click to reboot into recovery in CM11. I've tried reinstalling CWM numerous times, but I still get this same situation after the first time.

Well here is what I am trying to do. Root isn't a problem, but getting recovery on it is. I've been using the jltflexx builds of CWM and Cyanogen because I read that it was built into it. They both install with no problem and I can get up and running. The problem I run into is getting back into custom recovery and I get that picture error above when I try. I don't know if the custom recovery is getting overwritten by something or what, but it does get installed otherwise I wouldn't be able to get CM11 on it in the first place.

Hello,
i m having problems with getting a custom rom to work.
its a AT&T Galaxy S4
I337
Baseband MK2
i rooted the phone....then installed safestrap....
went into safestrap and created a backup. and then installed one of the following files (after each other) on the phone.
aokp_4.3_jflteatt_task650_10.22.2013.zip
CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20130906-0328-jflteatt (1).zip
pa_jflteatt-BETA-3.99-RC2-20130922.zip
The Task 650 showed the horse head for a second but went into a thousand blinking lights afterwards.
the Carbot didnt do anything.
and paranoid android showed the shark head loading screen but didnt move on from there.
so none of these 3 worked and i always had to restore the backup.
am i using the wrong roms? am i missing a step? if you could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
Ben

A custom rom.
All Cyanogenmod roms have this feature.
There's a GPE rom with this feature.
And the TW custom roms might have this feature too. You'll have to ask in the TW custom rom threads.
Other than that, Xposed is the only option.
