Stuck in 1x mode? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello everyone.
I just got my phone back from Samsung after it wouldn't power on, then had trouble getting it to stay connected long enough to activate. So, I brought it in to town, hooked in to wifi, and had no issues. Got the phone activated, waited for a while, updated the PRL and Profile, and waited around to see if it would start working for me. Unfortunately, it was still not working very well. Put on the 1x/3g mod to see if it was actually getting 3g. Found that it was not... Finally, I contacted sprint to see if they could help on tech support. He said he would contact the network people...
I was like, hmm... at different location now, checked at the sprint store, updated one of their phones PRLs, and it seemed to start running slowly too... so I downgraded my PRL to see if that would help, it did not. Finally, I put on the 00001 PRL really quickly to see if I could get 3g... seems it didn't leave sprint or the 1x.
So, put it back to the original... was wondering if anyone has some advice?
Thanks much.
UPDATE: So, the radio has been flickering on and off for data reception, went up to Green Bay today and it went into 4g, then 3g, then nothing for a while, then back again...
Right now it is on 4g again.
Is there any way to check if the radios may have something not working? I would say maybe it is just network upgrades, (really, really hoping this is the case), but then I would think that Sprint would have said something when I contacted them about there being upgrades....
Thanks.

Take it to a store and ask them to test the radios. They could be faulty.

Mines been acting the exact same way...altho mine has not had problems before needing to be sent to Samsung.
2 weeks ago it just started not going into 4g as much as it used to...and RANDOMLY totally dropping any data connection 10x a day. Literally no 3g/4g for 2+ minutes at a time..no amount of airplaine mode/restarts fixes it......its like im back to the SgS2 days.. ****im sick of Sprint/samsung

It's sprints fault, not samsung. I have the same data drop problems, especially around NYC/NJ. I've had the same issue on my previous S3. My GF has no such issues on her S4 or her previous S3, but she has AT&T. Chances are Sprint is doing something with the network in your area currently.

Try this
1 - update profile
2 - update prl
3 - open the dialer and enter ##72786#
Your phone will reboot and go thru the activation process
If that does not help, call sprint and find out if there are any network vision enhancements in progress for your area. Unfortunately when Sprint does their updates it gets REALLY BAD until they are done

Weak Signal... Not acceptable

Well I left tmobile because I was having terrible service everywhere I went. Low bars, texts not going through, dropped calls, etc... I pretty much forced them to let me out of my contract.
I have been with sprint for about a week now and everything has been going well until a couple days ago... I'm thinking it may be when I installed damagecontrol 2.3, the day it came out, it seems like ever since I have been getting really week signals in places I used to get decent coverage, on top of that today I experienced problems with text messages not going through..
I really hope this is just a problem with DC's newest rom, if not and if this is the sprint service that I will be receiving, it would be hypocritical of me to stay with them.
If anybody may have any clue as to what may be going on any shed light will be greatly appreciated.
I realize that I can just install another rom, but I doubt it's the rom...
I'd try flashing just back to stock to see if it fixes any of your issues. If it does, now you know! Otherwise, I'd give Sprint a call and complain a bit to see if its anything on their end.
I really wonder just how many EVOs Sprint has sold because I got my first network overload error today - and that's from Sprint service since 2006 - and I got it three times in a row before my call connected just to be disconnected three times more.
Sometimes, updating ur PRL does wonders for service. U can also make your Evo force roam. Look it up, it might be worth a try.
yeah update your PRL
Definitely... I updated to 60667 today and I saw data speeds above 900kbps since I got the device - I hit 1.3 down pretty consistently and I'm not in a high signal area...
does updating ur prl do anything to ur root..im new to android so just asking

No it doesn't.
I get great signal, I may not get great signal bars but I don't usually lose signal and i've had one dropped call in the year i've had sprint.

[Q] identical phones but problem with 4g

So my girlfriend and I both bought samsung epics. They are both stock 2.1 no mods have been done to them. However her phone picks up a 4g signal mine does not. The phones are side by side. Any ideas what the problem could be?
An update, my uncle brought his htc evo over and turned on 4g and it worked for him as well. So out of 3 4g phones mine is the only one that won't connect.

On your phone, go into Settings > About Phone > System Updates and update your PRL and profile so that your phone will know to pick up on the new towers.
The PRL is the Preferred Roaming List. It tells your phone where the towers are. Maybe your phone doesn't have the latest PRL
i called sprint customer service and talked to them about the problem. my representative spoke poor english and told me that 4g is not in my area. even though the 3 other phones in my house at the time were on 4g. they also told me that the "official release" of 4g in my area will be 11-28-10.
i also tried the prl and profile updates. and that didnt work either. so i guess my next day off ill go into a sprint store and see what they can do. I love my phone though, its plenty fast and apps and gps and calls work great. i just feel that since i have to pay the $10 extra for premium data , i should have access to it.
I had the same issue with my phone, 4G just wouldn't turn on completely. It would be stuck in the "turning on" mode until I'd do a battery pull. Either way, they'll hard reset your phone at the store, see if that fixes it (it shouldn't) and then replace it for you.

Signal Suddenly Terrible

For the past week or so I have suddenly had terrible reception while at work. My signal seems to constantly bounce between 6 bars and 0 bars...then to roaming which behaves the exact same way...then back to sprint. I have tried upgrading and downgrading the Radio/Wimax/etc and I always seem to get the same results. Sometimes my phone shows full coverage but when I call it just rings and rings without ever actually ringing on my phone. I was originally on MikG 3.0, then moved to Sprint Rooted OTA, now I'm using Team Nocturnal Stock ICS themed. At first I thought it was an issue with the update or radio but since I have reverted to older versions of both the radio and gingerbread itself and the issue persists I'm at a loss. I am told that no towers were removed or anything.
It could be a hardware issue. A friend of mine who also has an Evo had that happen. When he took it to the Sprint store they told him it was an issue with the antennae having somehow disconnected within the phone. So if anything I'd suggest try taking it to them for this.
Solar flare That was announced earlier this week? both my evo and Co workers white evo and fiancees evo shift been acting up all week. ie, being stuck on 1x or roaming where we usually get no issues. Just a thought?

I would say def hardware, take it to a store so they can check the antenna. Might just switch it out.

Haha....I gotta say I started laughing when I read this. Then I started to realize that today my reception is back to its usual fantastic state. I've been playing with it all morning and I have yet to get terrible reception or roaming. Coincidentally the effects of the solar flare have just dissipated I believe. Granted it seems like very few people had this problem and I would think if it was the solar flare it would have affected far more people but I can't deny the possiblity.
I'm having the 1x issue right now on my Evo.. started a couple of days ago. I'm in Yuma AZ
Hmm well if your issue is anything like mine hopefully it will fix itself shortly. Have you tried updating your PRL or the radio software itself? Granted those things did nothing for me but perhaps you will get different results.
Network overload?
Had 1X for 2-3 days and it drove me crazy. Spoiled I guess. All of a sudden phone went back to 3G last night. I am now settled back into reality and my need for speed.

I am having this exact issue, and have not been able to figure out what's causing it. I'm rooted running the latest Evo Classic v.0.0.6 by tommytomatoe. I've updated my profile and PRL.
Oddly enough my web speeds seem fine, but whenever I'm on a call they sound choppy, and eventually I get disconnected. When I watch my signal bars it hops around from 4-5 to 0 every 15 seconds or so. Up to this point I've never had any problems, and always had a great signal.
Is it time to un-root my phone and take it in to RS or the Sprint store? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
I hate to post again, but I'm still quite lost as to what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Q] Network keeps restarting on T-Mobile

I'm making this post because I need some assistance...I've already searched around this forum for a few days but it seems like I may be the only one with this issue...
I got the phone a few days ago, from day one I noticed I've been having network issues. By that I mean every time I try to use any apps that require data such as facebook, youtube, instagram, chrome, google now, and especially speedtest, my network would die for about 10 seconds as it reconnects.
All bars drop, I get the message of "network unavailable", and slowly edge speeds come back, followed by hspa.
I have tested this throughout all parts of Los Angeles already.
I have also replaced the micro sim card twice.
I also hard reset the phone back to stock.
Also reset the APN settings.
Two other people I know of in the area, their Nexus 4's work perfectly fine.
I'm all out of options, the T-Mobile tech support team is also out of options, i was recommended to send it back to Google but I don't want to do that unless it's absolutely necessary as a last resort.
I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with this issue or any suggestions as to what to do?
Thanks so much

Seems like a similar problem to what I'm having. I always just randomly lose reception. Reception is already really really bad for me, but it seems like it's whenever I pick up the phone the network goes out. It's really getting on my nerves. Most places in my house I get no reception. But it's the weirdest thing that happens. I can be sitting on the couch using my phone, and have no bars. But then I set the phone down on the couch to go grab something from the fridge and when I come back I'll have received a text message and I'll have like 2 bars! But then the second I pick the phone back up reception goes out again.
This has been going on for the last month for me, and it's especially bad at work but almost nowhere else.
I think (though I have no concrete evidence) that it's because of their ongoing 1900mhz refarm.
Someone should call tmo and find out.

yep..i'm starting to feel like it's 100% hardware related to the antenna. might have to contact google and see what's up. hopefully if i send it back they won't take a month to replace it haha
Sounds like a faulty antenna to me :\

I've experienced these problems on AT&T (MEdia Net, not DataPro) as well. It happens regardless of how good my signal is. I haven't experienced the other problems you are a time else mentioned.
On the NPR app, it results in some sort of error such that I have to reboot to get the NPR app working again. The app doesn't say something has gone wrong, but it won't load any audio and will hang after waiting.
The signal drops, then picks up again and goes straight to HSPA+:15. This happens to me on the road quite often and I just switch to onboard music rather than fiddling with my phone while driving. The issue has occurred a few times while in Maps, but thankfully I knew how to get back from where I navigated to.
EDIT: Just want to clarify to the poster below me that this occurs REGARDLESS of how good my signal is. It happens when I have better than -50 dBm (I think -70 gets full bars, although I've even seen full bars at -90!) so it can't just be a low signal issue.
I'm pretty sure this happens to all nexus 4s unfortunately. Anyways that is in a poor connection area had this happen.
This happens to me at home. Bounces from 0 to 3 bars constantly. But if I'm outside in an area with strong signal I never go below 3 bars no matter how I hold it.

Ive been having the same problems with my n4 in tmob. I get a lot of 3g and sometimes i get no bars. I hope its not a hardware issue. Im in many miami and ive seen a couple of threads about this

I don't think it's an antenna issue. It was happening on my Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks up until I got the Nexus 4, and prior to that I *never* experienced total signal loss like this.

The first couple weeks I had the N4, I wasn't experiencing any connection issues, but for some weird reason they started last week. It wasn't even fresh after I flashed a new ROM. I think perhaps it's a network issue that is somehow specific to our unique phone and plan combinations and our areas. Anyone using AT&T's MEdia Net plan in Georgia?
I think you guys may have gotten my issue a bit confused, what I'm trying to say is my signal fluctuates depending on location like normal, however only when I use apps that are solely dependent on internet connection, my entire network goes down.

Yeah that's what I'm encountering as well. I wonder what these other guys are talking about?
My network goes down regardless of whether I'm doing anything with the phone or not. I could have just the screen on and it'll be lying on the table and I'll see it go from 2 bars to empty and eventually back.
It's especially bad at work where I have terrible signal to begin with.
Forgot to add.. my coworker with an HTC 8x and another with a Galaxy Nexus are getting the same issues.
So, it's a network problem for sure. I'll post this on the tmo forums tomorrow and see if I can get any official word on the matter.

I experienced something similar on my N4 and called T-Mobile tech support. They had me power off my phone and they "reprovisioned" or "reprogrammed" my data connection or something like that. It's been better since then.
Posted on t-mo forums, let's see if they can be of any help.

Please add on to the linked thread, the more attention we get on this issue the faster we'll get a solution, or at least an idea of what is causing it.

last night after midnight my phone suddenly couldn't get a signal from t-mobile. i thought i screwed it up, but then i took the sim and put it in my galaxy nexus and it had the same issue. so i went to bed and in the morning it was working fine. i suspect t-mobile was doing stuff to their network in my area
Having the exact same problem today in Manhattan near Bryant Park. Can't keep a stable signal at all and data is connecting only in bursts. Hopefully this will be fixed soon or I'll have to look for other options than Tmo and my N4
What's the E stand for? 3G?

Whats really going on with my data/phone??

So I have had this phone like 20 days.. Never dropped it nothing.. Never had any problems with it at all... Then today my phone went into roaming for nothing.. Then it went back to 3g.. Then my 3g icon went aways for about 10 mins.. Came back on but I couldnt get in the internet? So I call sprint they have me do a few thing like reset the phone.. Update prl and profile.. Nothing worked.. They said that there was problems with towers in my state but they been like that for a while and this just started today.. I also asked people that lice in my town that have sprint and they said nothing had been happening to there data? So I take a ride to the store 15 mins away.. My data comes back on but its super slow.. So im in the parking lot and everything is fine now I cant get it to mess up like it was.. So I sit there for 20 mins nothing.. lol.. So I drive home get in the house and the problem is back.. My 3g icon will leave then come back... When the 3g icon is there I still cant get on the internet.. Whats really going on? do u think my phone is screwed up.. People around my town say there 3g is ok.. I hope it goes away by the morning.. If not I guess ill try and go back to the store.. What do u guys think is the problem?
sounds like they are working on your tower. give it a couple days see what happens.

I so hope your rite bro! :fingers-crossed:
Same thing happened in my area as well as a lot of others. Hell I witnessed it at the sprint store in Minnesota while looking at New phones. They told me towers were being worked on. Sure enough a 4g connection came up out of nowhere that I've never seen in my area.

I have 4g LTE where I work near Chaska, MN for about 3-4 months now.
To OP, I'm too have that issue sometime. Roaming then 3g then back to 4g LTE. Usually turn Airplane Mode On then off fix the problem.
SPH-L720_!
I experience something similar when I'm at work. I called Sprint and they said some work was being done. Checked the S4GRU forum and it turns out Sprint is upgrading to LTE. For a brief period on some days, I pick up LTE. When I ran Speedtest, I pulled almost 19 Mbps~!
Funny today I had the same thing happen. Data has been in and out for a couple weeks but today I lost all signal for awhile. I know they have a few towers done in my area so hopefully the ones I use most are almost ready.

This sounds all too familiar, been having similar issues since I came back to Sprint this week. I have also been told by 3 Sprint reps that they are doing work on towers and to expect issues as they upgrade them. I was told that the work in my area was suppose to be done by August this year. I know we just got LTE here because about a month ago the coverage maps only showed 3g here, but now they show LTE. So I guess this just requires patience on our part as they finally get things fixed.
