[Q] Where you able to get Warranty repair of the screen? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I was one of the first adopters of Nexus 4, got it the minute it was released. After babying it this long (phone still has not a single scratch on it), my screen got cracked while phone was in my jeans' pocket along with wallet. So much for Gorilla Glass 2. I saw numerous reports of this happening and was wondering, did anyone manage to get it repaired with warranty, free of charge?

Nope, I had to pay the $140 to LG plus shipping to get it repaired.. don't think its covered because its not a manufacturers defect i think.. Most people I know of whose screens broke had to pay.. You can call them and try but I doubt they'll cover it.

I knew when I was buying Nexus 4 - I was gambling, like many others, who got LG G2x and decided to give Nexus 4 a try. The phone was creaking, USB port was loose and also creaked, and their Gorilla Glass was crap. Phone gets hot like an Iron.
LG - never again.

Your're talking about your n4 that had all those problems? My phone didn't creak, usb port was fine.. first one the gorilla glass didn't hold up from a facedown drop but since I've put a case on the replacement its been fine. But if it had all those issues brand new you should've tried to get an RMA.. regarding heat, try a custom kernel or undervolting..
i think n5 is gonna be LG too, so you're not gonna give that a chance?

I didn't do RMA. I had enough of it with previous Tmo devices, so for $350 I decided to ignore these issues. I had custom Franco kernel at first, set up for undervolting. But with update I decided to keep it stock. I personally got tired of rooting and modifying.
I had enough of LG. I picked up HTC One and am very happy with it. But I did not trust HTC too. I had to RMA MyTouch 4G several times because HTC had decided to use two different displays and two eMMCs. One of good quality, other bad. Hate RMA to the core.

[Q] Screen Scratched?

So I just noticed a decent sized scratch on my fascinates screen.
It's in the middle of the screen, and I can feel it with a fingernail. The phone spends all day in my pocket, and I baby it, so I'm surprised. Never been dropped or anything.
Though I know it's morally ambigious, I was thinking about returning it to verizon under the guise of faulty GPS/not getting a lock so I could get a new one with a clean screen.
Anyone know of any reason this wouldn't work?
If I do this or not though, will def be getting a screen protector.
reasons it wouldn't work would be if the rep there knows the gps problem affects all fascinate units so they may only offer swapping to a different model. Also, the devilish giggling sounds you make as you try to scam them might give you away.

Returned under the guise of malfunctioning GPS, no problem at all.
She checked to see if the update had been applied though, and it was.

On a related subject, whats the best screen protector? I would like one that covers the entire front. Also, I thought these screens were hard to scratch except with sand? I have no scratches yet.
I find this hard to believe....these phones have gorilla glass....same as iphone.....go google it and watch some youtube videos of people stabbing their phones. I will never use crappy screen protector again.....i swear they are a scam. Just my two cents.

how are screen protectors a scam when they tend to the need for which you bought them? sure we can say they are costly, but thats just one of those inequalities in life we should learn to deal with in a capitalistic society. :/
I can assure you that it is possible to scratch Gorilla Glass, as I did it.
What exactly did it? Couldn't tell you, but I was careless and overconfident in the GG, and had it in my pocket with keys and my headphones, and it was scratched up in a few weeks, though only one scratch was deep enough to feel with a fingernail.
Since I've gotten the new phone I decided to order the realook screen protector from amazon, and it has its own pocket, free of anything else. besides my wallet (leather, no metal or edges).
Trust me, I don't need to google the greatness of GG, I've had my own real life test done, and it failed. Phone was never dropped or handled roughly.
Yikes. Glad I got an Invisible Shield installed. So how is the new GPS? I'm considering returning mine as I also have GPS issues. It scared me when I read that it may be a hardware issue on these forums today.

If its a known issue with the unit it specifically means they will NOT exchange the device. And def not for another one, given its the 1st one.
You will be told to wait for them to release an update that "fixes" the issue, and at which point, it doesn't, THEN the device is swapped out, for another identical model.
You can try returning the phone at that point, and depending who you get or what not, they may waive the restock fee, especially if you point out that you're returning a phone for an issue thats CLEARLY not your problem, and mention that the rep who sold you the phone didn't point it out.

Unhappy with build quality

hi all,
i have been using my z for about a month now and i am now officially unhappy with it. the z hinge is not really an issue, i like the way it easily opens and closes without any snapping movement or stress in the mechanism. my concerns would be when i open it and use the keyboard, my phone squeaks a lot. i think the battery cover is the culprit. now my latest problem is that there are a lot of dust particles accumulating under the screen. i had 5 htc phones and this never happened before. it happened with my nokia's and se's, but never with my htc. so im disappointed with it. im very oc when it comes to my phone and i make sure that i clean my pockets from dust and lint to ensure its clean and dust free.

Use a screen protector to stop the dust. If you think the back cover is bad you can buy a new one, or remove it and use a slim case.
I think if you that unsatisfied with the quality you should have returned it for a new a long time ago. Let me assure you that none of the bad points you mentioned has plagued my G2. I recommend you call customer service and huff and puff until they exchange it.

i dont think they will do that. i actually chose this because this is the best and had it replaced already. no dead [ixels etc just dust getting under the screen
If you think the squeek is coming from the battery cover try putting on a hardcover and see if that helps? Also, I completely understnad how the squeekeness would be annoying.. I returned a Cliq because of it.
Customer care should replace the phone if u have build quality issues. I would def give them a call. I had issues with my prior phone the cliq which was replaced 5 times by calling as well as tweeting tmobile my issue. I had my G2 replaced twice due to the build quality issues. Should be no reason they wouldn't the phone still carries a warranty.

I had my cliq replaced 3 times (it just wouldn't get reception).
If you do have problems with the build quality, then have it replaced. What you're experiencing is not normal.
Absolutely, if you're within 1 year, call them up and have them replace it under warranty. I am also not having any of those issues, so it might just be your specific unit. There's absolutely no reason to keep a phone that sucks.

I haven't seen this with any mobile other than one that had a manufacturing defect. I certainly haven't seen this with any HTC devices either (and I'm no fanboy, this is my first HTC device).
Contact the OEM or your wireless provider. I've never used any protection for any of my mobile phones in the past decade and haven't had so much as a spec of dust under my screen. I had a single spec of dust in my PSP though and it drove me insane (it was shipped with the dust but I didn't have a receipt). Good luck!

i will be visiting their customer care sometime this week. have to absent myself due to work though. hope they can sort it out before the year ends. holidays are creeping and they are closed during this period as well.

just sent it to the service center, they will be replacing the entire screen with the panel. the technician said it was like someone placed their finger under the screen. hopefully everything will be ok and no mishaps when i get it back on the 29th. another screen protector down the drain.

nexus one, you will be remembered

The touchscreen died.
Last night when I used it, I notice the touchscreen has no more response.
Tried to power cycle (I still can use the trackball) and it doesn't help.
It's time to say goodbye and you're remembered.
I think I read it was $115 to replace the screen by sending it to HTC, you have this option still I guess.

hell, give it to me, i replaced my digitizer for 30$ and my phone still does anything i could ever need it to do, and if it cant do i then i can turn on the tether and my laptop can.
replacing the digitizer isn't too much of a pain in the ass other than removing / replacing the glue. i used some heavy duty 3M double sided tape which was just slightly too thick but it'll work until the nexus 3 comes out.
also, might it be a software issue? i've been having random touch screen problems ever since i installed the latest OTA (2.3.4) including non responsiveness and random input.
yeah i used spray adhesive on the tray that holds the led and digitizer, masked off properly worked like a charm

That is a good deal So tempted to order one as a spare...but the shipping/import duty costs would be nasty.
order a digitizer from ebay..... I did it with mine, because my digitizer was cracked. But now its good as new!

My n1 has always had touchscreen issues...so non-responsiveness is nothing new to me. But thanks for the link, I'm def gonna order a spare just in case mine does go completely out b4 the n3 arrives.

Power button died on mine and it seems like I get storage error every few days? I i've had a my N1 since day one but it looks like I was might be getting that galaxy s2 sooner than expected.

However, with that said, granted that our work-horse phones are subject to daily wear & tear, but how are you guys handling your N1s? No reason why a digitizer becomes inoperable due to wear because it inherently has no moving parts. Unless of course it gets scratched or dropped.
I'm aware of the inferior digitizer with its multi-touch issue, but simply turning the screen off/on "resets" it. Other than that, it's still as responsive as day one.
N1s (especially when it first came out) aren't cheap. Gotta handle them, or any smartphone really, with kid gloves. I'm still using the cover that came with it and it has saved my N1 from quite a number of drops.
Bottom line, (modded) N1s should continue to keep up (and in some cases still kick ass) with newly released smartphones if we just handle them with a modicum of care.

Hey man dont let it go just yet. A power cycle isn't all you can do. First try to wipe and flash a new rom. If that dosnt work use fast boot and restore everything to original including your boot loader. I really hope its not dead. If you dont want to buy a new screen there are people who will, so please sell it or give it away on craigslist, you cant just give up on such a legendary phone.

Broken screen

Hey yall nothing special but I reancently drop my phone 1 too many time and crack the screen. Does anyone happen to know what phone I get as a replacement from assurion. I've heard people geting the EVO 3d. I have the white version of the EVO now and seems so slipery when I pull it out of my pocket. Also anything special I should do I had it, but i already flash it back to stock non rooted.

If it's slippery, get a case.
I would suggest buying an otterbox for your new phone either way. It might be expensive but ive had my evo since release and my brother (ever since I got the case) thought it would be funny to show everyone who saw it and says "look! its indestructable" :\ Ass! You might also find that you can actually salvage it by buying a new lcd screen and digitizer glass for under 70.00 on ebay! just tell your carrier you lost it! you pay the same premium regaurdless if you have insurance! then you can turn it around and sell it as refurbished! Keep in mind some skill and technical knowlege of the EVO might be required along with tools if it is not included!
What's crazy is, my wife's Evo has had two cracked screens and every time we took them to the Sprint stores, they only charged us 25 dollars for a replacement Evo (Just the body, no battery/case/sd card/accessories). Are they not doing this anymore?
I've head my screen replaced countless times by sprint (with root) for free.
Edit: not to mention speakers replaced, bezel, camera lenses. All free. Never unrooted my phone, ever. Same root from day after launch.

How many *is* countless?
I'm not trying to be flip, I think it's an important point (only semi-related to the OP, but definitely something that occurred to me lately) : if you're having to replace that many things on your phone, that doesn't reflect well on the build quality of the phone.
My observation, from this and other remarks on XDA, as well as my own experience (below) is that Evo's tend to break a lot. Probably less than other brands, and possibly less than other HTC phones, but probably more than certain other phones also (dare I mention the iPhone or is that just going to get me banned on XDA?)
On my original Evo, which I had less than a year, I had to replace the camera lens cover, the internal ear piece speaker (not the speakerphone speaker) and the digitizer. The last one I took to a Sprint store - 35 bucks was pretty reasonable, but they don't just replace a digitizer, they also swap out a whole assembly from some other returned phone including someone else's glass, LCD, and bezel. The other two jobs I did myself using parts I got on Ebay. I thought I did a good job too until, a few months after I did the speaker, the screen started acting funny and I realized I had screwed it together oh-so-slightly wrong and torqued the motherboard just a little. The problem got progressively worse and I finally had to buy a replacement Evo on Ebay. So much for saving a buck going the DIY route.
And those are just the problems I was able to solve. I also had to live with the famous crack in the bezel near the volume button, various dings in the relatively soft plastic of the bezel, and a down-volume button that just stopped working (too much use in recovery sessions I guess? )
Evo's *feel* pretty solid, and they're definitely not cheap plastic toys, but I don't remember having these problems with the fruit flavored phone I used to have.

just remeber guys/gals I did say you would have to have the specifications. tourque specs is a large portion of this BEFORE you finish your work. This is a highly complicated peice of technology and any wrong tweeking might cause you to screw up your phone. I suggest addiquate research before you attempt any repairs to your phone Also, there have been some instances where the carrier WILL NOT work on your phone if they deam that you have voided the warrenty. I have had this problem before. Again, it is really up to the shop if they want to fix it. Do this at your own risk.

Well, yes, it is a calculated risk. The old rule applies : don't gamble if you can't afford to lose.
To me, it's just a phone, so I gambled (and lost). I survived just fine, but I agree that not everyone would/should make the same choice.

OK. So it wasn't countless.
But
3 screen (2 my fault and 1 the tech installed wrong - about to go for a 4th screen cuz I recently dropped and cracked it again, but this time it's not shattered)
2 or 3 external speakers
2 cam lens covers
And 1 badly dinged bezel (that I didn't even ask for, they did it while replacing the screen)
Never had to pay a dime.
I think the build quality is great. Maybe they could use a better speaker, but I think I was using a kernel with audio gains when it blew (i.e. my fault).
Busted screens were obviously my fault.
And HTC has GOT to find a way to protect camera lenses better. I had camera scratches on my HTC diamond, too, but all the Evo and newer HTCs have an even less protected lens.
I never unrooted. I usually try to make it look sorta stock, though. But the last time I brought it in with ICS, and even had ROM toolbox right on my homescreen lol

[Q] Wireless charging orb damaged my N4...

Alright, let me keep this simple. I was charging my Nexus 4 on my wireless charging orb yesterday. I did not notice that it was slipping off the orb since I was eating, and by the time I finally noticed, it fell to the ground. When I picked it back up, I noticed that the back of the phone was cracked. The crack on the backside was pretty bad that it actually affects the camera; when I try to take a picture, I noticed that there is a really bright area on the bottom of the picture (most likely from the cracks). I bought the N4 from day 1 and got it a week after, so I don't think calling Google Play support would help me there. If I call LG and explain to them that the cracks were caused by the phone slipping off the orb, would they allow me to send it in for repair under the limited warranty provided along with the phone?
UPDATE: I just called LG and just asked for how much it would be to repair it. Did not explain or anything. They told me that it could be $140-200; could be more, could be less. Is there any other cheaper alternatives to getting the back cover fixed? I really don't want to pay that much, but if there is nothing I can do, then I might as well.

Seriously Doubt LG will repair it without cost... Mainly because you shouldn't have set the phone so close to the edge of the table/desk when it was being held up by rubber and magnets. Its not impossible for it to slip off.. Specially IF you have a case on the phone, which reduces the strength of the magnets grip.
No cheaper way to get it fix other than through LG.. At least none that I have found.
There aren't 't any magnets in the orb that hold the Nexus 4. I've heard the back late is easy to change. Maybe you can find one cheap on ebay or somewhere else and change it yourself.

Could you please edit the title of your post? This is very misleading. The orb did not damage your phone. It's sudden stop on the floor is what damaged your phone.

@OP I'm gonna suggest you do a search for replacement back. Don't take me wrong, not trying to be a prick. I'm driving and wanted to let you known there might be an alternative. There are 1-2 threads, one guy asks people to pm him to buy the back. Also I think its simple to replace it by just removing the two screws. One thread a guy mentions he sent his back to LG and it cost him $64 total and two weeks. There are backs online about $35-50.
