What don't you like about the G2? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious what people do not like about it.

I don't have it yet, but the constant focusing in video. I hate that. I hope there's a "lock focus in video" option like the s4 has or someone mods it.. i'm sure it's an easy software fix. but yeah that seems to be about it.

I dont like the shiny plastic back. I wish LG would have chosen to use the soft touch rubberized back, that was on the G2x. Other than that, no complaints here. September 25th cant come soon enough.

i agree, except the shiny plastic back, which makes it look like S4, maybe i would have loved a SD card slot, but guess i can live without it. One more thing is not sure why LG did not go with 4k recording option, when the chip can support it(Not a biggie though). Other then it's all cool.

Not sure what you're talking about. I saw a video where it has a focus slider....that's a bit odd.

Rubberized back on Optimus G? It has glass back What I would have wanted is the back of G Pad 8.3, just take a look at that brushed aluminium.

The shiny back, the UI, the button placement is hard to get used to... ( i have a test unit )
i keep going back and forth between this and the droid maxx for my upgrade. I'm not sure which I will end up with come Thursday. i wish this was offered with a stock ui.

I don't see an option to lock focus. It does keep focusing on objects while I pan around my desk.

From what I've gathered, I don't like:
No removable battery
No MicroSD card slot
No SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE)
Other than that, looks perfect.

The shiny back is about it. I would like a SD card slot but it s not a deal breaker.

LG has nothing to with SVLTE, it's only your operator which is responsible for availability of this service. Phone can't bring you voice if it's not available on 4G network in your region. Can't blame G2
In fact it called VoLTE

SVLTE and VoLTE are totally different. VoLTE allows for much higher quality voice using the LTE network, basically VoIP using LTE. SVLTE allows you to use LTE data along with standard CDMA voice at the same time; in other words: browsing the web on LTE while on a call.

Looks really easy to take apart. That's good to know.
Also, it has the same Qualcomm MDM6600 3G radio that the iPhone 4 has. That means it's possibly HSPA+ capable?

Hardware will support up to 15 touch points! That means if Moto capped it to 8 in software, someone can uncap it back to 15!

I'm curious as to the quality of the camera builds. And also if there is anything indicating the LTE hardware is already present? Meaning we'll just have to update the radio which can be done without sending in.

I understand that rooting or even installing a custom ROM could void your warranty; if so, will they still do the upgrade to 4G? Or they will send it back to you untouched claiming that you voided your warranty.

I was trying to figure out where the 4G radio goes, too. They don't point it out on the board, and I don't see it. I'm guessing they're just going to take out the 3G and slap a Qualcomm 4G in there.
And, yes, rooting and unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty. When we finally get SD support, there will no doubt be a way to restore everything, and since the bootloader is relockable, you should be good if you put everything back where it was.

I wonder if motorola would let me trade in my 4G LTE upgrade for a working GSM 3G radio?
Seeing as how I travel, that would be 1000x more meaningful to me. I dont expect much though... as it turns out big companies just so happen to wake up on the "we're blood sucking heartless monster from hell" side of the bed every single day.
I mean for ****s sake an 800$ tablet should already be considered a purchase of an "unlocked device" to begin with, and all the hardware you paid for (i.e a world capable data chip) should be fully your property and thus fully enabled without you having to beg.
I read the article the day it was written, and they make a valid point about the radio being simple to upgrade. I don't understand why they couldn't just have some VZW personnel pop in the LTE chip.
Some of them are bright, while others... not so much. You all remember the .002cent video from a while ago?

It already has a GSM radio in it, the chip can handle both CDMA and GSM. However the antenna design is totally different to get those frequencies, so it's not a simple swap in like you assume.

So what does this mean essentially? I am a laymen so i have to ask, is the different antenna design you are speaking about ultimately a hardware issue or is it a firmware/software issue that can, at least in theory, be hacked?
Thank you for your response by the way. I look forward to any info, even if it is bad news.

G2 Dropping Calls

I have a T-Mobile G2 with baseband 12.62.60.27U.26.13.04.19_M. I am frequently seeing dropped calls, and they seem to always have the same behavior. The connection will seem fine (2-3 bars), until it suddenly drops. When I look t the phone, it has dropped the signal completely (x next to bars). Calling back a few seconds later seems to work fine as well.
Is this a software problem with the phone/radio configuration? Or possibly some hardware problem with the G2?

That wouldn't really make sense either though. The original message said T-Mobile (carrier) and G2 (only sold in the US). I don't think it would take a lot of presumption to guess carrier/country.
If it makes a difference, I have only personally observed the issue with 2G (EDGE) towers.

Oh, and if you don't want to look silly holding the thing up to your head to talk on the phone, in addition to using a regular bluetooth earpiece Samsung has this device out now:

Seems ideal for a tablet. If not for the much better camera in my phone I'd be tempted to shed it and just use the tablet.
Hold on a minute. Can someone clarify something for me. I know it has the specs to be used as a "phone". BUT, is there phone/dialer/messaging software on it. And does that thing on the top in the middle act as a speaker or earpiece?
Cuz, I'm seriously considering using one as a "phone". LOL the looks I'll get. And I don't care. Honestly people don't care anymore anyway. It's accepted. If you can carry it, you can talk on it. haha.

Exactly why I won't use CDMA. I enjoy having a much broader range of potential devices--especially unbranded devices. And if my phone breaks or I brick it out of momentary stupidity, I can quickly swap it for one of the other phones I have.
What's funny to me about this is they 1900 people will be relocated. I call bs on that. All they will do is have them far away to fire them. The center here (where I used to work) had 700 employee's about 2 years ago. Since the announcement of the AT&T buyout they started firing everyone they could. The same center now has about 200 employees or less. If they're struggling for $$ so bad why aside a bunch of money to pay the executives. T-mobile executives have screwed thousands of employees. I was lucky enough to find a better job before most of this started but I've had a lot of friends to just come in one morning and for no reason walk right back out. The unemployment office here doesn't ask any questions anymore once you say you worked for T-Mobile. They know they're firing everyone. Awful situation if you ask me.

Why to not buy the AT&T phone for TMO

I've seen some threads abound for people asking if the AT&T version works on T-Mobile and while it does there are some things that you should know before making that plunge even though you might be able to save $50.
First the good. If you've already done this that's fine. All bands for operation on T-mobile are on the AT&T variant. So no issues there. Don't feel like me making this thread means your device won't work.
If you're weighing what you lose in this scenario:
- You'll need to buy an unlock code, or at least find one, to switch it over. While these codes are cheap it's still chipping away at that small discount you got to buy the AT&T version instead of the TMO one.
- VoLTE support. While it's not enabled yet, it will come shortly and AT&T phones won't have the right radio and framework to make this work on TMO.
- QI Charging - in case you've been living under a rock in these forums, the AT&T model utilizes the basically non-existant powermat charging method and they have disabled the ability to use a QI wireless charger. Supposedly this is at the hardware level so this isn't something that can be fixed with a patch or custom ROM if true.
- No WiFi calling. Self explanatory. AT&T doesn't have/use this technology.
- locked bootloader. Now this may change over time with the amazing devs that we have but should you accidentally relock it or get a replacement phone because your old one got lost/broken you may have a newer bootloader than the one that could be bypassed previously. Better to just not deal with it.
Now for those looking to go the other way (TMO device on AT&T) that's fine. Just know that the tmo version is missing the 850mhz LTE band. Not that big a deal though as they don't really use that band much but it is a difference.
If anyone can think of anything else I missed feel free to chime in. Or if anyone has any general thoughts.
