G2 Dropping Calls - G2 and Desire Z General

I have a T-Mobile G2 with baseband 12.62.60.27U.26.13.04.19_M. I am frequently seeing dropped calls, and they seem to always have the same behavior. The connection will seem fine (2-3 bars), until it suddenly drops. When I look t the phone, it has dropped the signal completely (x next to bars). Calling back a few seconds later seems to work fine as well.
Is this a software problem with the phone/radio configuration? Or possibly some hardware problem with the G2?

That wouldn't really make sense either though. The original message said T-Mobile (carrier) and G2 (only sold in the US). I don't think it would take a lot of presumption to guess carrier/country.
If it makes a difference, I have only personally observed the issue with 2G (EDGE) towers.

Sounds like you are in an area that has very poor reception.

HSDPA Problem

Hi, not a big problem as I am normally on wifi but I've noticed that my GSII is constantly dropping of HSDPA every few seconds and if I do a speed test it only gets around 300kbps.
Now I have an LG Optimus on the same network, same room and that stays on HSDPA and gets around 1800kbps on downloads.
Any idea what would cause this?

Don't have another phone here right now to test against but just did a couple of tests with speedtest.net app
Download/Upload
2500kbps/1967kbps
1422kbps/2967kbps
6192kbps/2883kbps
2896kbps/2608kbps
Seems to work just fine here at least. Granted this is at a place with good HSDPA coverage.
Sorry to tell you that but it seems like a bug in the phone, i do have the same issue, i surfed the couple of forums and the problem is spreading, hoping it's not a hardware issue.

goes down to 2mbps when it's lower signal.

Yes I think it's a phone issue as my HTC Desire and LG Optimus are both working fine.
Hmmm. I hope this can be sorted with a software update.
mine too, infact wont go over 1900 had like 3500 on my iphone 4
Just updated to the newest firmware using Kies and it made no difference to the problem with HSDPA :-/

I think it's a network restriction. People in another thread were having similar problems with buying the handset and the contract separately meaning the data plan they were on was only at 300kbps.
If you've got another handset that gets a higher speed, switch the sim cards and see if that changes anything.
My phone will only download around 360kbps but will upload at 1mb, so puzzled as to why it would be a network restriction (hoping it is as I'm not happy and still within my 14 day cooling period) ringing o2 later...

No, it's not a network restriction. Not on Three anyway. I've just taken the PAYG SIM out of my LG which is getting around 1800kbps and put it in the Galaxy SII and it now only gets 64kbps!!! It's constantly flickering between 3G and HSDPA. It's definitely a phone issue.
i had posted in the other thread about how it switches down to 3G when it's not being used and instantly switch over to H+ when in use. There were no performance issues
Also on AT&T network, when it's first started/activated it took a little bit of time before network performance improved both on day one and when i switched over to an unlimited data plan
Oh I forgot to mention. I reported this issue to Samsung yesterday but don't hold your breath!
The man I spoke to didn't seem to understand what I was saying and when I advised him that there were many similar problems and issues being faced by people on this forum, he simply stated that he had never heard of the site. I gave him the web address but doubt they will ever look in to it.
If your facing this issue, then I would ring them and report it. That's the only way they are going to find out about the issue.
Normal behaviour for it to sit on 3G, only switches to H+ once it's in full flow.
This usually impacts speedtests and such.
Best way to test is to download a file off a fast server.
Same thing use to happen with my Desire.

I have numerous 3G devices here and none of them cuts of HSDPA so erratically. If I start to stream AudioGalaxy on my LG Android, the HSDPA stays on as does my Huawei MiFi. The Galaxy S II is dropping connection every few seconds.
It doesn't make sense for two Android phones in the same room with the same network to get completely different speeds. Maybe a small difference but to get one having 1800kbps and the other 64kbps shows there is a problem.
I've just updated the phone to KE2 and it's made no difference. Will have to wait to see what Samsung say.

How strong is the signal in dB or just bars whe nit switches around between 3G and H/H+?
That last sentence - did you contact Samsung with the problem and are waiting for their reply? thanks
It's around the -100 dBm mark with 2 to 3 bars. Yes I contacted Samsung yesterday and am now waiting for a reply.

thanks, could be the lower signal , SGS2 being unable to pick it up reliably.
Please update this thread with whatever Sam says. I think I am experiencing same problem (unstable data signal in areas with weaker coverage)

mods close thread!

fix does not work.
Is that force roaming to Vz? Maybe you started getting spotty Sprint ownwd EVDO coverage. Forcing 3g only could be putting you on Vz towers.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Doesn't EVDO Only disable voice calls?
This would also be a good way to save battery without losing all data connectivity.
3G/EVDO uses a lot of power. If you switch this setting to CDMA only you will force the phone to only use 1x. The data rates will be slower, but acceptable enough for most notifications and light things like facebook.
CDMA - 2G/1X Slower Data greater battery life
EVDO - 3G/EVDO Higher speed data, battery hog.

I dont think it is.
I have my phone set to Home network only. doing this boosted my signal from 1 bar (-90,-100dBm) to a full signal (-65dBM) it clearly says Sprint CDMA EvDo Rev. A in connection status.

Yep that is correct. Just tested it...
Hybrid OR CDMA only are the only options you should choose here folks.
CDMA only WILL produce battery life savings though. Your data will be slower then molasses rolling uphill in December BUT it will be sufficient for emails.
It's a very nice find either way just on that fact alone. Back in the motorola days this was a very popular battery saver mod. Disabling EVDO and forcing it to always be 1X.

hehe.... you are correct sir... going back to old ****ty service again so i can get phone calls
The EVDO radio and CDMA radio are two different radios I believe.
When you put EVDO only you're probably seeing JUST your 3G signal which might appear stronger.
CDMA only you're seeing just your 1x/voice/sms signal.
Hybrid the signal bars I'm sure just average the two out...
That's how I "think!" it works... could be way wrong.
Well at least i tried since sprint is dragging their heels. We need a new radio and quick.

I wouldn't be surprised if a new PRL fixes this... seems to be area specific, I have great signal for the most part...
Also, fixxer, I know you've been having horrid battery life. I'm sure the low signal is causing this as the lower the signal the more power the radio is going to be given to try and maintain the signal.
Try CDMA only and use WiFi whenever you can (also be sure to set WiFi sleep policy to never). 1x uses significantly less power then 3G... although it's to slow to be downloading big apps or loading really complex web pages, it would however be great for general notifications. Give it a shot and let me know if it helps your battery at all!

Could be a prl but i still think it needs a radio. This phone is set to wcdma when it should be cdma auto prl. Hopefully we get a fix or ota soon. My battery is better today since i flashed a stock rom and kernel. Not great but better.
I gave the CDMA-only option a shot, no incoming phone calls at all. Switched instead to EVDO only, and calls seems to be coming through better in an area where I had maybe 50% success rate for incoming calls when running unmodified. I'll leave it here for awhile, so I know when someone is actually trying to call me.
This is horribly frustrating, I suffered with poor AT&T service for years for the iPhone and never thought I'd be wishing I hadn't changed carriers. I could maybe justify the shoddy call coverage if data was at least fast, but it's not. I'm giving this another week, and going for a return and possibly switching carriers again.
CDMA only setting for calls/texts paired with 4G for data seems to work pretty well.
Since EVDO only mode seems to prevent receiving calls.
True test will be when I get home, 1930's brick building that has been raising hell with calls.

Help in returning my Nexus 4

Hello. Since I buy this phone the signal wile on 3G keeps dropping from 5 bars to 2,5,2,3,2 etc. It does not totally disconnects but the issue is draining my battery because is always trying to get a full signal. Plus wile gaming it gets hot and even when I'm just browsing the web only it gets hot. I want to know if is just me or this is not happening to anyone else. This phone is a week old so I am in my 15 days return.
Doesn't sound as if anything is wrong. If your hand is covering the lower portion of the phone, that is where the cell antennae are and you will see reduced bars. If you set it on a table and the bars are more consistent it is your hand that is attenuating the antenna.
It does get warm when it is working hard.

Thanks for the quick reply. Another thing is the battery. Why the battery has more Mhz than the iphone 5 but it last less?
Because Apple designs and optimizes everything, from the OS down to the CPU.

Is there any workaround on the signal? Or any help with the drops? Are you getting 3 to 4 signal bars on 3G?
Thanks for your patience.
PS: Yes i notice that i put it on a table and i get full signal bars but when i grab it it start to drop. Even with a bumper on. That sucks lol.
Holding the phone higher up helps some, so that your hand does not cover the antennas at the bottom of the phone.

yeah could also be how far you are to the nearest cell towers, but your grip on the phone shouldn't make that much of a difference . i've also seen a free app called getril help. it makes your ril(radio interface layer) match your baseband(radio) i've used it in the past when i was playing around with different radios.
good luck dude!

Terrible Cell Service

Sitting next to my sister in the car and noticed her S4 has full bars meanwhile my G2 has 1 and has 1x for data and she has a strong connection to LTE. I checked status and idk which relates to service but my dBm was 110 while hers was in the 90s and my asu was 1 and hers was 45. My service has been pretty terrible everywhere. I am running green devils latest CM nightly and I believe I flashed the latest radio in the development thread. Please help! Can't even send MMS in my house because not only is my house get bad service but my phone has really been doing a bad job getting good reception. Wondering if anyone knows what's up.

well you would be amazed what people ask. I have learned if user doesnt state it he hasnt though about it. How obvious it may seem
Maybe bad antenna. Also check which mode you have set for network, gsm,2g etc.
also note that some phones show levels differently, their multiple bars could be same as yours.

Must be something strange, I set the mobile network to LTE (recommended) and it's weird I've been trying out different modems too flashing those, the phone will boot up and have LTE, then it will disappear after a minute or so and I will literally never see LTE again where my town I have LTE EVERYWHERE.

yeah that sounds like the low reception bug some people have been talking about.
you try disabling fast dormancy. See if it works, might end up using more power though. Also try disabling the power saving option. Lte is less battery friendly so phone could be forcing itself to lower power mode when not using data. you should see it come back the moment you use data, if thats it.
Also check if ypur apn settings are correct.
Also check your provider. They might be limiting you on their end.

[Q] Bad reception / dropped calls / no network

Hey everyone. I don't know if this has been discussed already but I did search the crap out of google only to find, we'll, not much really...
The topic title says it all.. I am having major issues with terrible data reception resulting in unsent SMS and straight to voicemail calls. It is getting really annoying. I have tried everything.. Changed SIM card, Odin back to 4.3 stock, flashed random modems in hope they work...
The really annoying part is that it gets great reception in so local areas.. I went to the BELL store to whine about the problem and the darnn phone was getting 4 bars. Made me look like a fool.
My wife has an s3 with bell and while I get missed calls she gets great reception so it can't be the ISP ..
Is anyone else about to go nuts? Is anyone looking at possible tweaks around this? Thanks

No, I also have terrible reception problems on mine. I'm in the US (T-Mobile). This phone has the worst reception and I basically don't get any bars in most buildings I go into (where I used to have full bars on my galaxy s2). For data, I only see "E" all the time and rarely see 4G, again in places where I used to always have excellent reception with my old galaxy S2.
Waiting to see if anyone has a tip or a fix for this. I can't return the phone because I bought it second hand. :crying:
