The next version of android will be called kit kat and it will be version 4.4. What a bummer for key lime pie fans..
P. S. I love kit kat..
http://www.android.com/kitkat/
There's nothing about features yet, but we could see the new release next month. So lets start speculating.
I have one small worry though. 4.3 is expected in the coming weeks, and the Z1 goes live tomorrow, so we're now third in place for future updates. Kinda sucks don't you think?

It's even on the website of Nestlé: http://www.nestle.com/media/newsandfeatures/google-nestle-announce-android-kitkat
I'm not using those ridiculous names anyway. Android 4.0, Android 4.1, Android 4.2, etc. is much easier and shows immediately which one comes first. Android 4.1 and 4.2 even have the same name.
Kk (kitkat) as u say bro.

No bother to me at all, I never refer to the updates as sweets anyhoo, I'll be sticking to 4.2, 4.4 etc
So I wrote an article about 4.4 link is here
But Cliff notes

Positive press for Nestle and Google
All because 5.0 is going to get them bad press again because its going to be too powerful rendering many devices unable to upgrade to it
"It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."
Everybody hm...My guess is, that KK will be optimized more than we might expect. Obviously not everybody has a high end device. You CANNOT fully enjoy android 4.X on a low/mid spec phone. It gets the job done, but is nowhere near the experience you get on a high end phone. Hell, 4.X is often / laggy on quadcore phones with 2 gigs of ram. I believe that we can expect a big performance jump on every phone.
And i'd take KitKat over "key lime pie" everyday.

High-five brother :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:
I was wondering the same thing. Google isn't looking to make Android for performance-driven devices only. The the sucky part is that OEMs aren't going to update older phones with the new software. Mainly because the hardware is outdated and not supported, like say a TI OMAP chipset and Tegra 2. I'm pretty sure Xperia S owners are going to start cribbing about this in a few months too. Bringing Android to everyone is a forward looking statement where new devices, both low-end and high-performance, will be able to run the OS smoothly.

I wouldnt be sure about that. Sale of mobile phones is on its best in the first five/six months, then it decreases. Mobile phones being over 1 year old are commonly taken as sold out and you hardly get it in any mobile network offer. For SONY and other brands those phones are not money-makers and no one will provide updates for them, its not cruelty its just economy. Another aspect is that if they do so i mean update older phones they will definitely lose some clients for new ones, its like im not going to but expensive new one cause there is no difference in buying cheaper: same software, apps, other features. Economy is a keyword for updates, most of older devices are capable of running newer software enough smoothly.

Android 4.2 could be just weeks away folks, and rumors are already
starting to circle on what the Mountain View company is cooking.
But careful, this rumors come from a very trustworthy source,
so if you want to wait for Google’s keynote to see Android 4.2′s features,
we suggest you click away. But who can’t help to learn what
Google has come up with this time right?
Customization Center
OEM skins have been solved once and for all. With this feature,
OEM’s can build their skins in the Customization Center and publish them on the device,
leaving stock Android intact. The themes could have different ringtones, backgrounds, launch themes and others of the sort.
Project Roadrunner
Your battery life is about to triple. Google has been rumored to focus a lot on
battery life in this release of Android. Remember how Project Butter increased
the speed of your device and how drastic the change was? Well get ready,
because battery life is about to get an upgrade..without switching batteries of course.
Google Play
Google Play is up next, and the rumor is more features are going to be
added to the ever growing app store. New features include promotional campaign
notifications, easier in-app transactions, more billing options and more.
Google Now
If you want information then and now, Google Now will become your best friend.
But Google Now is about to get even more helpful, with the rumored features of
being able to control the brightness, turn on and off system functions and more.
Video Player
The video player for Android is pretty basic, so the rumor is that Google decided
to update to add more API’s for developers and give it a UI makeover.
Conclusion
There we have it folks, Android 4.2 laid out. Taylor from AndroidandMe’s source
has always been right on the money with other information so we would be
shocked if any of this information is wrong above.
So, who’s cooking the Key Lime Pie tonight?

Edit thx
Yeah, I'm not buying this. Google Play, Video Player and Google Now are more like software updates and won't require a new version of the operating system (remember, this isn't Apple we are talking about). The customization thing might be true, but it won't get you the latest updates just like that since the hardware components are different with pretty much every phone, just like ivan1real said. And the triple amount of batterylife won't really happen just because of the different hardware components. There really aren't that many "magical" ways to increase the batterylife unless you know how the hardware works exactly to control the battery usage properly (and even then, it would be up to the manufacturer, not Google, to optimize their drivers).
Also, there have been hints that the next Android version would still be called Jelly Bean much like 2.0 and 2.1 were both called Eclair:
According to this article in Androidpolice.com, the Nexus phone build numbers first letter usually tell you the what the operating system's name is. For example, with Gingerbread, everything began with G, with ICS with I and now with JB with J. So, if the Android 4.2's build numbers also start with J, it couldn't be called Key Lime Pie.

Sounds unlikely. With so few devices on jellybean, it's unlikely that android 4.2 will be released this year. Besides, there's usually only one major android update a year.
like project butter, i forsee roadrunner would only work well on nexus hardware and screw up on other hardware chipsets especially sammy's closed sourced exynos...

The Razr HD will receive JB next week. I would want to know why the razr i seems neglected.
I suppose that's because of the Intel architecture.
I suppose it's because it's less aggresevily marketed then the Razr M and HD so they don't have to speed things up. Either that or Verizon pays a lot to Motorola to speed things up for the M and HD.

First of all: like above poster said, Intel already finished porting 4.1.2 right about when the Razr i hit the market. Second of all: UK is not even half as big as USA and outside of the UK there is not that much advertising. So yes, I think it definitely has to do with gigantous advertising of the Razr M and HD in the USA.

There was a big campaign (street and TV adds) here in France when the Razr i can to the market through the operator SFR.
But it last only 1 or 2 weeks
Now the Razr HD is more pushed by the advertisers.
It it very much not in Intel's interests to be seen as the laggard when it comes to Android updates.
If they want to break into the Android handset market in a big way, surely that will be difficult if people perceive that Intel inside = old Android version outside?
Motorola have a poor track record at getting out Android updates, but seem to be pulling their socks up. If Intel stumble and fail to deliver updates for what is only their second Android handset, it would likely have bad consequences.

Again: Intel already has 4.1 out for more than 4 weeks now. It's just Motorola that has to build it for our phone including their own changes. And Intel is currently porting over 4.2 to their arch so they are taking it seriously.
And don't get me started on the fact that Samsung just released a new phone with ICS even though 4.1 and 4.2 are already out.

Well, 4.1 is coming within a few weeks.
And our phone is capable of the panorama camera from 4.2 but I hope 4.2 doesn't land TBH because IMHO it sucks big time. 4.1 is the best Android yet, 4.2 brings stuff I don't want (like those annoying lockscreen widgets for example).

I won't because Samsung is not helping open source devs by releasing Exynos sources. Exynos is not open source friendly at the moment and the power of Android is the ability to customize your phone and install different types of roms, if i will have to wait Samsung to release an Android OS update after 6 months or live with stock based roms which are all the same apart some build.prop tweaks and deleted apps what's the point of having Android.
I'll personally send a big f**k to any new Sammie products and will wait until the next moto nexus or iPhone 6 whatever phone will be the best for me.

No source available for devs. Plus it's a f*****g shame to wait so long for official update of a FLAGSHIP phone.
You know S2 is dead and 4.2.1 will be the last version provided by CM for our device? This phone is one year and a half old and it's already dead. I will go for a nexus next time, that's for sure. I want a decent product follow up which is not the case on Sammie product and especially with their closed BS exynos chips.

I'd like to go for it, but as these guys pointed out, I'm annoyed about the closed nature of Exynos. To be honest, my ideal phone would be a nexus device but with expandable memory. Unfortunately that's the deal breaker for me.

Until Samsung changes it's way of operating (not making their exynos projects open source) I won't be any Samsung phones. I rather go with Nexus devices. Keeping exynos closed source is a real setback for the majority of developers which in return limits the amount of innovation in roms.
S II is gonna get a lime pie update, remember that.
Now, about this s4 thing....is it 8.5 mm thick? it weights less than 116 gr? if not, sticking to S II.
I don't care for non-capacitive-buttons devices. How the hell would I know when to unlock my JB leak screen otherwise?
Actually my s2 is working pretty good for how I use it now, def need a new huge battery for the extra fun I could squeeze out of.
top comments do have a point but seriously with the active xda community, top rated forums r screaming Samsung all over.
Yea they're not so open , yea they're taking their sweet time with updates n such but seriously its a big thanks to all the devs who help n make what u have even better.
Back on track will I buy the next Sammie, depends on how much better it is... The s3 wasn't much of an improvement so I stuck with the s2 Currently running rootboxs version of jb and they're doing a great job , add to that dorimanxs kernel and u have a top of the line phone with the best options to tweak at hand for daily use/battery/performance/ no bloat what so ever.... The list goes on

Sammie behaviour is not a deal breaker for u? Personally I won't allow the same company to f**k me twice in the a*s.
When I buy a flagship phone I want a premium support which is not the case at all.
I do expect a lot from the moto nexus. Or Sony maybe which is friendly with devs. Otherwise I'll return on the apple side waiting for THE Nexus phone,
And I don't speak about the lack of respect to the devs community after having offered them some GS2 promising a good cooperation and making me believe a bright future and a long life for this phone, they just get BS communication and disappointment. This lack of respect to the guys without who will would have this bull**** version of android made in Samsung. They have spent a lot of times to offer for free a great android version and they deserve a big thanks for all of us running their work on our s2. And now most of them are gone, some to the nexus others to Sony side due to Samsung behavior. I can not understand how a CM user may think of buying a Sammie phoen again.

With the next Android release being revealed as 4.4 kitkat what do you think they have done with it and how long do you think we gotta wait to get our hands on it
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Its better to wait and be suprised rather than speculate and be dissapointed
I love the new the name but the fact that it'd 4.4 I expect little change to the ui.
There can only be one, the chosen ONE.
Found this
From what ive read and what i think is that its mostly going to be lighter and more optimized version but the fact that they are using a big name brand like kitkat leads me to believe that they may have more behind the curtains in this release why else would they put kitkat on it its a pretty big move if it is in fact a small update as they do have 5.0 in the corner waiting to be released hopefully near the end of this year possibly near Christmas we shall see
I found this has some good stuff

The name is really bugging me... Having a registered product name (Kit-Kat) as an open-source software build name seems odd to me.
I'm thinking they had to pay to use it, and again... that seems very weird.
Did they do this so they can plug the Play Store codes on the candy? It would have sat better with me if they just made a seperate marketing decision to team with Hershey (Nestle world-wide) to put marketing on the products and keep Key Lime as the name. It just seems like a very sell-out move in my blunt opinion. Does either company really need the boost in sales?
ANYWAYS... I'm really hoping more tweaks for smoothness in Project Butter, and maybe software support for some of the features found on the Moto X (Google Now, Camera Launch). I know it's purely reliant on the chip, but still :silly:

They've already stated there was no money exchanged. It was for fun. What does it matter what the name is? Tired of people letting this bother them.

I agree it is an interesting move on googles part to team up with them on this and why on 4.4 why not wait to do so if they were going to do it why not on 5.0? Anyways its done and as for smothnes im sure they have added more buttery goodness to it
if you havent seen the commercial here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFT2vYsf1PM

I'm not really looking forward to how "smooth" it's going to be. It's stable enough now for general use. I'm looking for optimizations and efficiency in longevity. I want better management efficiency with processes that utilize energy.
I'm just glad it's named after a product I've actually eaten (and was created in Yorkshire England lol)
I have never eaten a Jellybean an Ice cream sandwich and had no clue what a key lime pie was.

I didn't realize there was no money exchanged, my apologies.
It's just a matter of the inconsistency that bothers me, not so much the actual name.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet
I'm glad they went with Kit Kat, at least that rolls off the tounge alittle easier
Is this Google making fun of their own ecosystem? Kit Kat breaks apart just like Android's fragmentation?
;P
I have eaten a kitkat 25 or 30 years ago, I can remember it as pretty disgusting, just a little bit better than mars or raiders with out that disgustingly sweet and sticky caramel. I have never eaten klp but it sounds tastier, more refreshing, nice and limey... Anyway kk or klp, they are just names, I don't care too much even though now I still remember the disgusting taste of kk.
Any what can we expect? A finer grained permissions system, like already hidden in 4.3 and hopefully even more software optimizations, more untying of features from the os into play services

Holy crap! Are you Kurt Cobain???
I love the name. They always name the names after nasty stuff. Key lime pie??+!!! Really that's the nastiest desert I can think of. Jelly bean gross, ice cream sandwich ok I love ice cream, honeycomb this was the perfect name. It says in android.com/developers that a lot of people never even tried key lime pie so they were trying to use a name that people had tried and lived just turned out to be kit Kat.

KitKat is all fine and dandy but without, I am sure, additional sources released by Sony (Ericsson) we will probably never get a JB kernel working and still retain full Xperia PLAY compatibility... then again I may be completely wrong and if I am someone correct me. I have stayed pretty much on GB for gaming. Either way, thanks for sharing... although I think this should go to the General forum.... anyways... thread on.
google says that they made the OS smaller and after so old devices that didn't get in the past update can now get update because they resolve many issues.

Well maybe 4.4 is for older phones but as you know the companies support they devices for a short period of time. So no KitKat for us...

True but they also stated those will need to be updated by either the carrier or the manufacturer of the device(s). As $ony long ago gave up on the PLAY, I think its incredibly unlikely we will see any support form Sony and or even source releases.
Still, it would be awesome if we can get it up and running, but dont forget the highest kernel we can sort of get working, is kernel 3.4.
Kitkat would be an even higher kernel number.
Google isn't even releasing KitKat for the Galaxy Nexus. Sony isn't going to do it either, and it would need hardware drivers from Qualcomm side too.
Why is this thread in the dev section?
is that true?

Sorry for wrong section... Anyway to delete? On another note, dony and erricson broke up so i dunno if they would be wanting to support our 2011 devices. All we can do id hope a dev/sony has the power to bring us 4.4...
from the God of gaming, the Xperia Play
Nice Information
I think if the 3.4 Kernel is working it wont be difficult to get kitkat running. But as far there is no touch in 3.4

I'm 100% sure that sony has abandoned our plays .It's a good news to hear that the upcoming android OS is going to be a light one

They abandoned it,yes. As far as i know, there are no new models build and everything that is floating around in shops are the last produced batches, not getting the update to Android 4 kinda sealed this assumption
I don't know if the X Play will ever get KitKat but Google introduced a new runtime called ART to replace Dalvik with KitKat, on my Nexus 4 it really improve the performance to a substantial amount, so maybe that will help as well.

Would be great if Sony would pay more attention to their old phones, specially because they cancelled the ics update so sudden.
But i don´t think this will happen.
And that's one reason I won't buy Sony again.
we will get 4.4, not official but we will get it.
once i got a play i will work on it, otherwise we will have an other dev.

so? is there anyone working on kitkat roms for xPlay? or its abandoned at all?
By the looks of it, KitKat is out of reach for our device, theres barely any 4.1 or 4.2 jellybean roms functioning, what makes you think we will get 4.4 any time soon? Our Play is best optimised for GB due to performance issues as ICS+ isn't 100% functional on our play. Don't believe me? try any ics rom out and sooner or later you will find out that games will lag and memory will tend to be low. Sorry but this is the bottom line for our xperia play.
Legacyxperia (mostly mike) is working to get gully working 3.4 kernel. Than we wpuld be able to boot kitkat.

It is indeed possible, and I am saying this because I have NEO L(same as xplay) and I ran kitkat on my phone, thanks to @Mike's hard work. He reached at a point now where touch is working, he just need to have Wifi,Camera and some other things work and it will be there
