Samsung Galaxy NOTE 10.1 hands on

UPDATE: I had to take the videos down for the moment at Samsung's request. There is information that they are about to change some design features and specs, but I don't know when and what exactly. I'm sorry for the situation, but I assure you I'll post them back as soon as I get word of it! Thank you for your interest and patience
I've had the chance to play around with the Note 10.1, that's the tablet with the S Pen. The reason they've delayed the release is that they've changed it dramatically since the preview at the MWC. It now has a 1.4GHz quadcore processor (I think it's the Exynos on the SIII), a 5 MP camera (instead of the 3.15) and the back got a hyperglazed finish just as the SIII. I've had the pebble blue one and I'm not sure if there is a marble white one.
The S Pen is much bigger than the Note 5.3 (looks EXACTLY the same), but smaller than the model shown at the MWC and it now fits inside a vertical hole in the lower left side. An amazing software feature is the Photoshop Touch app which is brilliant (as you may see in my video).

It's an astonishing device, clearly stepping way higher in the high end line and it works like a charm. If you have questions feel free to ask, but unfortunately I no longer have it to do extra demos.

Which is the resolution? Still stuck at that 1280x800??

Yes, but I had no problem with it. At 150 ppi it's quite ok in my opinion.

If the resolution will be the same it will not compete with the ipad and will not sell well and i will not buy it either.

Even 1920x1080 are too low for a 10.1. To compete with ipad visual quality they can barely put this resolution into a 8.9, but for a 10.1... no way it's too low.

Unfortunately I have no such info, but given the fact that *I* (not some hotshot official) had access to one, it can't be far.

1920x1080 is normal-sized monitor HD resolution, to say it's too low for a 10.1" screen is beyond ridiculous.
iPhone's "Retina" resolution is completely worthless on a useless 3.5", iPad's "Retina" display is overkill. The higher the resolution the better... up to a point.
Beyond that you are just paying a weight and power consumption (and also brightness in the case of the Ipad) penalty without getting your worth (the higher the resolutions the less your eye is able to see the difference).
Full HD resolution on a 10.1" would be ideal.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1's PPI is over 10% higher than the iPad2's.

Normal sized monitor is not meant to be used as close as a tablet.
The closer a device is used the higher the ppi should be. For a smartphone pixels start beeing unnoticeable from 320-330ppi. Actually the best job is made by lg with 1280x720 on a 4.3" and 342ppi, higher than apple.
The tablet is meant to be used less close than a phone, so the ppi can be lower, around 250... the value adopted by apple in ipad3.
So for an optimal view the ppi has to be higher. 1280x800 on a 10.1 does mean a too low ppi (maybe not for a monitor, but surely for a tablet).
And yes, I confirm that samsung is fond of low ppi devices. You tell me the higest ppi of a fullRGB display of a Samsung device. FullRGB only, because the pentile matrix trash doesn't worth any talk, you know that at ppi being equal the visual quality of a pentile is much lower due to less subpixels, so i.e. the actual ppi of a 300ppi samoled hd is around 250, but this is something already well known.

Do you have any information about battery life?

i'm thinking about buying a tablet .. and i was comparing between this one and the galaxy tab 2 10.1 .. i'm going to buy it for college use .. to be honest .. i haven't had any tablet before .. it's my first .. and i want recommendations .. which one should i buy .. galaxy note 10.1 or tab 10.1 or go for an ipad 3 ?

The tab 2 10.1 is painfully slow. It's disappointing because it could have been a much better option if they had just put in a better processor (I know the tablet is supposed to be entry level, but the year-old exynos from the s2 would have been better). I'm not a huge gamer, but I do want a tablet that runs without much lag out of the box. I also want to play HD video files without frame skipping and the tab 2 10.1 isn't very good for this either.
As far as the other 2, it depends on you. The new ipad is nice. It's fast and has a fantastic display. My brother in law has one and absolutely loves it.
Personally, I usually gravitate towards android (and samsung). The note 10.1 doesn't have the PPI of the ipad, but it can fully display 720p hd video which is good enough for me. The screen is also a little bigger (than the ipad). Memory expansion is nice through microsd and the US version should have the IR blaster to use as a universal remote. The potential of using the s-pen for note taking and drawing is also a big plus for me. The quad core processor should also be able to handle just about whatever you throw at it (at least for a couple of years).

I wish the resolution was higher. I hate the display on my Tab 10.1, there's a distinct lack of clarity.

Probably gonna exchange my tab10.1 for the Note10.1
Hope it will launch soon, any rumours on that subject?

That ppi is still ridiculous. Either they increase it till around 250, or sammy will get only low end customers.
But since they still use that crappy ppi on high end smartphones, I guess they are not able to increase the ppi in a tablet.

How close do you hold a tablet? How far do you sit from a monitor? For me it's only a few inches difference in usage? i sit approx arms length away from my monitors and hold my tablet only a few inches closer than that (arms slightly bent)

I'm amused by all the comments linking the tablet to the low end of the market simply due to the low ppi. Clearly, everyone has different requirements out of a device. By putting a stylus on a 10" tablet, Samsung attained my personal "Shut up and take my money!" threshold. **** PPI, do you know how incredibly, mind blowingly useful a stylus is? As soon as I can figure out where to buy this thing, I'm buying it. I've been begging for a full sized tablet with a stylus ever since the original Note came out. This is my actual dream come true.

GS4 or GNote 3

I currently Have the GS4, but have been looking at videos of the Note 3 and have found a new love. I have never toyed around with or entertained the idea of a Note device before. Should I make the jump to the Note 3?

It's going to be faster with the additional S-Pen features.
If you can handle the size go for it - that's the only debatable thing if money is not an issue.

make the jump. i sold my s4 weeks ago for note 3. i think the note 2 is just as fast as s4. Note 3 will be so much better then s4. Size could be your only issue

Note 2 is def not as fast as gs4....that said the n3 will be that much faster then the s4.im keeping my n2 and s4 as well as getting n3...should be interesting comparing them all hands on

You know the differences are all easy to see. Just buy what fits your budget, and realize the Note 3 is better in every way, except if it's too big for your needs. I don't know of many people who even care about the size, in fact believe it's a benefit because of the larger screen.
Previously covered by many websites, it has the following improvements over the Galaxy S4:
Instead of 16-bit 48kHz sound, it has 24-bit 192kHz HD hardware. Thus superior sound playback and recording.
Instead of just 1080p video recording (1920x1080), it has 4K HD video recording (3,840 x 2,160)
Instead of just 1.9GHz quad core and Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset, it has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset w/ 2.3GHz quad-core
Instead of Adreno 320 graphics chipset, it has Adreno 330 for faster graphics and other features improvements.
There is the addition of the S Pen and ability to detect pen pressure on the screen, which the S4 lacks.
Instead of the 5" screen 1920x1080 screen, it has a 5.7" 1920x1080 screen. There is loss of pixels per inch, in trade off for larger screen.
Instead of plastic body, it has metal bezel and faux leather backing "premium" style.
Instead of Android 4.2 stock, it has Android 4.3.
Instead of USB2 interface, is has USB3 for faster data transfer with PC and faster charging ability.
It should have other improvements, like faster internal storage, and perhaps a change in the Super AMOLED display, which might compensate for the loss of pixels per inch. The S4 has diamond pentile pixel layout, some people hope the Note 3 has something else which results in clearer display or more subpixels (but nobody knows yet, as these specifications have not yet been released)
Pretty much you are getting a much better device for your money with the Note 3. It has no downsides, unless you don't want the larger screen/device size.

Must be half blind. I see a big difference between my note 2 and note 3.

As a former user of many phones the iPhone 5 being one of them. I'm not sure you know what you are talking about. The note 3 has probably the best display I have seen.

Dude is dumb. Girlfriend has the iphone and I have note 3 coming from note 2. Firstly compared to note 2 it's like comparing ps3 to Sega Genesis. The crystal clarity of the 3 awws even iphone users. My girlfriend realized (after looking at my phone) there is not a thing that her phone does better than mine.

Happy with the 720p screen?

I've seen a couple of articles talking about the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is rumored to have a QHD 2k screen ( 2560 x 1440).
Just curious what others thought. Personally, I went from the HTC Rezound (which was also a 720p screen, but smaller at 4.3", so a higher PPI) to the Moto X, but I love the Moto X screen. I honestly can't imagine having a screen that's any sharper. I almost don't want a higer-rez screen, since it would probably just be a waste of battery power.
I'm sure there are some folks who are spec-oriented, but I feel all of the trade-offs made by the Moto X (720p screen, dual core, etc) were exactly right. Great screen, great battery, responsive UI, etc.

The newer SOCs well be more efficient, it won't have issues delivering fast performance for 1080p while getting good battery if well optimized, especially if reduced to dual core like the MotoX.
The MotoX screen have RGB matrix so it would have more subpixels than a Pentile and Diamond matrix AMOLED screen of the same resolution.

I switched from the HTC One which had the most amazing screen. The Moto X is fine by all means though, it's vibrant and clear and 720P is more than adequate. I think I'm a sucker for AMOLED as well, the blackest of blacks, I'll never go backs. I've owned a GNex and a Note 1 and I feel this AMOLED is calibrated very well. Not quite as cartoony looking as my brother's Note 3.

The screen is 4.x" diagonally. If you can see a difference between 720p and 1080p, you need to take off your magnifying glasses and move the phone away from your face. While I'm all about bigger and better specs, a 2k res screen on a phone isn't necessary.

The Moto X was engineered to be the best balance of hardware/screen/size/battery etc available. To that end the 720p screen is perfect. When the same balance can be achieved with a higher resolution screen then I will want it.
You will notice this is very similar to how Apple engineers a phone, no hardware is included that isn't optimized and balanced. They don't force a feature into the phone for the sake of marketing that really hurts the overall product balance.

The MotoX screen is fine but not as good as other Android like S4. I am happy with battery life and screen on time though so its a trade off.

My only reference is my GS3 and the screen on the X is every bit as nice.

I have the note 3 and honestly, the difference between the 1080p screen of the Note 3 isn't that much better than the 720p screen of the Moto X. They are both very sharp and as was stated above, I would rather the increased battery life than the sharper display. But in all fairness, I'm no pixel junkie so the 720p screen doesn't bother me at all.

The only reason I was even remotely interested in the Moto X was because it carried an HD display-size: was AMOLED and was RGB-like matrix. The rest like usability and one-handed nature was icing on the cake. A FHD display is stupid and impractical for most common cases: the rare exception for me is reading textbooks and other small-font paragraphs: in which case, you're using the wrong tool for the task. Get a tablet or the 5.5"+ displays. The only other phone with a similar display is the Note 2 and that phone completely contradicts what makes the Moto X attractive.
However though, food for thought, anyone looking for a backup phone should consider a Note 2.

Yes, because I can't see the difference between this and a 1080p on a screen of this size (and probably neither can you).

I've never had a 1080p screen but I can't imagine anything being noticeably sharper than the Moto X's. That aside, the vast majority of the time you're not thinking about whether or not you can see traces of pixels when staring at the thing, you're just using it to actually do things and in that context brightness, color balance/saturation, and contrast are what you actually notice. All of those are great on the Moto, now every LCD screen I see looks washed-out to me!
Until batteries get a whole lot better, I don't see the point in 1080p for anything less than a 5" screen. It's like buying a 40" 4K TV... Just an opinion of course!

These resolution comparisons on screens smaller than five inches are getting ridiculous. 720 or 1080 really makes no difference on a screen this small. Unless you look at your phone with a magnifying glass or microscope the human eye can't really tell the difference. Backlight makes a bigger difference than anything. I think the 720p screen is a big part of the reason the device is as snappy as it is, as well as good on battery. I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p but it's tough without a side-by-side. The resolution is perfect IMO.

Yes, I know my Note 3 is 1080p and the Note 4 is QHD.
However, I went to Best Buy today and placed my Note 3 side by side with the Note 4, I had a very hard time seeing difference.
I was expecting to be blown away by the QHD like when I compared side by side with Note 2 (720p) and Note 3.
Anyone have similar experience?
Is beyond 1080p not discernable?

I guess it depends. I can still see pixels on a 1080p screen on my S5. I couldn't on the Note 4.

did you try the sample movies on the note 4? thats the money right there. 4k video to show off the screen. the home screens are very pretty, but you'll definitely notice the difference watching a movie in 4k

It doesn't have much difference as far as i think it can be only judge by viewing HD videos on both phones..

They claim that Samsung achieved an outstanding color balance on Note 4 as opposed to any other phone they had out there. QHD vs HD is somwhat of a gimmick in my book though.

That is exactly when I see too. I do not see any difference in that small screen. I see a big difference on a 720p vs 1 080p on my 120" wall painted screen. I cant wait for 4K projector with real 4k content on my big screen.

This may be irrelevant but i got a question. I use to have the note 3 and now on g3...when I went to compare screen with note 4, the colors looked like they were BLEEDING out. Do you get that sense between the note 3 and the note 4? I'm assuming my eyes are now use to the screen of the g3 that the saturation of the samsung devices pop out more than they actually do.

I could see a difference in crispness or sharpness of images. I was impressed.

Screen on the Note 4 is a lot more vibrant and accurate. There's no oversharpening like on the G3.

I was pleasantly surprised with the N4 display compared to the three. Seemed brighter and crisper. I was surprisingly not impressed with the LG G3 screen. I though the brightness was down.

G3's screen isn't much good plus it suffers from oversharpening

I've been playing with google cardboard lately on my Note 3, and using the VR headest kindof magnifies the pixels, and the resolution at even the Note 3's 1080P actually looks pretty bad (Its blocky, and the pen-tile screen becomes visible, reds look awful.). The extra PPI on the Note 4 should help with that. Something to think about if you are going to try out VR on your phone. Occulus Rift is using a Note 4 screen for their DK2 for these very reasons.

DK2 uses the note 3 screen actually. I have one. After playing it you get used to It unless you read tiny text which can happen in a game like elite dangerous. Still the experience is awesome on the note 3 screen and I bet the note 4 screen will be pretty good as well
