audiojack - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

so i have a monster isport headphones and i can hear clearly when using with the galaxy s4 however if i turn it a little bit from the proper placement i get no sound, is this a hardware issue or software. The headphones work perfectly on my galaxy nexus and other devices . Also i heard there is an update to fix some audio problem on s4 if anyone can direct me to the fix that would be appreciated.

This sounds like your device might have some hardware issue with the earphone jack.
Regarding this 'update', the most recent update is the MF3 build OTA update. You should have this by now, if you don't, be careful. You can update to it but if your phone is rooted or you plan to root - you need to search the threads of maintaining or gaining root access. The MF3 OTA update did a number on some people when it relocked bootloaders.
You can attempt to find this via Kies or you carrier.

It is a 2 week old phone and the original headphone works fine just the monster I sport is giving some issues maybe it is the right angle headphone pin that is the issue. I saw a zip file that fixed the problem without having to update in q form but can't find it now. My phone is rooted and using it on Canadian network telus

Yeah, I haven't heard of a zip file containing information that would fix that. Hope you find it.

New system software update (1.47.651.1)

hey guys i just down loaded the new update i will mess with it for a while and report back...
Just downloaded and installed it on my stock evo so I have no idea if it breaks root or not. For the other poster that asked I'm located in the Chicago land area.
i think it will break root...the update has a new radio 2.05.00.06.10
I think some people can't see the update because of the custom Rom.... some cooks disable FOTA in the pst... you can go to QPST an reenable it... if you don't know what those things are... um, ppcgeeks is the site for you

I am using the unrevoked root method and apparently this OTA breaks my root and wireless tethering...
I've rooted mine with Toasts method, and the phone will download the update try to install it, fail, and reboot the way it previously was...no harm no foul I guess...just gotta wait for someone to figure out a way to apply the updates to rooted phones.

it's because unrevoked didn't really root anything, it just exploited a flaw in the system which was patched
Just contributing something of my own here. While the screen is now perfectly responsive on a flat surface, the the touch sensor lag is still as bad as ever with this new update installed, or at least it is on my device. Damn, I was so excited to be getting rid of that issue too.

The touch input lag isn't as big for me as the grounding problem, but I want to know how the hell they fixed it with software.
So if I had unrEVOked and apply the OTA, it blocks the access that allows for wifi tethering? That's the only feature I really care about.
Their twitter (@unrevoked) seems to indicate they'll have something out tonight. If that's the case, I'd rather just update my phone and re-run the unrEVOked .apk.
Does anyone see any potential issues to this?

Agreed... glad to see they are jumping right on it... I prefer the unrEVOked exploit at the moment over full root but its just because I am Android noob and haven't had time to really look into full root....
I know its one-click easy now but I want to learn all ways for the knowledge before I start hacking...
And... until froyo is fully working I see no immediate need since I am still playing with Android for the first time and learning the lay of the land

I agree with you, I'm an Android Noob myself, and it has all the apps and features I need it to do except for free wi-fi tethering. I'm running the OTA right now and almost done. All the other benefits are more important right now than free wi-fi tether.
This screen is so huge I almost don't need a laptop... at least definitely not a laptop to get online wherever I need to be right now. Maybe later when traveling, but not anytime soon.
Has anyone else noticed that using their phones with powered speakers, like an aux in your car, is now working. HTC replied to an email I sent that the new update should have fixed the issue. I just confirmed by listening in the car for about 15 minutes... SWEET!
Of course, I just spent $15 at Radio Shack for the mic cable...

www.monoprice.com If I ever see you paying more than $10 on a cable again I reserve the right to smack you after giving you that site. That cable should of cost you no more than $3 from monoprice. Of course you would have had to pay shipping, but there are other cables you could have bought and saved on shipping.
Thanks. You earned your right to smack me...
I guess it had something to do with my impatience with not being able to listen to the music on my phone when driving. Anyone want to buy a barely used 3.5" mic cable?? $14??

Well I'm going to make the assumption that the cable is less than 30 days old and you can still return it to RS.
for car use, i had a cheap cable that came with a sound card that worked flawless for me. i stream pandroa all the time with this cable. i also used it on the hero.
curious, what issues were you having bu not getting audio to your cars system?

When listening through any amplified speakers, be it car speakers or desktop speakers, it would act fine for a while recognizing them as headphones. It would then wig out thinking it was a headset, with mic, and pop up the voice input and start skipping songs and shuffling through them. It's something I was able to find a number of other Evo owners had issues with.

Phone mic default when using patch cable

I was under the impression that dj05 would fix the issue with the phone not defaulting to its mic when using a patch cable or headphones with no mic.. It would be great to have fixed.. I like to listen to pandora in my car.. And like to be able to answer a call when it comes in and talk over the car stereo.. But until this is fixed I need to unplug when talking..

Not everybody has bluetooth stereo capabilities in their car but even a car with a tape deck can be used with a 3.5mm jack.
I was under impression that it was fixed. At least I was able to talk on the phone with headphones plugged in. Cannot confirm because I on DI01 right now.

I'm Running dj05 voodoo kernel, and I use my headphones and a stereo mini plug for my car, and when a call comes in, I can answer and talk into my phone mic, them when the call ends the music continues. I assumed it was dj05 that corrected this issue. I love being able to do this.
Strange...
May it depend on the phones somehow?
I'm pretty confident that it worked for me on DJ05 stock and geeknik stupidfast, because it was one of the annoyances I hated. Then I exchanged my phone because of USB problem and stuck with stock waiting for official update today :-(

I know for a fact it didn't work on di01, so if it is varied from phone to phone, its also firmware dependant.

This is not samsung's software problem. They deliberately decided to switch up the 3.5mm jack to make it different from Apple's products. Certain cables will work, some will not. Most likely, it won't T T.. DAMN SAMSUNG!!!!! (TRRS switch)
No one has confirmed a software can change whether or not the jack can be read differently.
Are there any devs looking into this?

I assume that it was bug in soft, preventing sensing jack without mic.

[Q] New Nexus 10 - System update.. Should I do it?

Just opened up my new Nexus 10 - sealed in box, bought off another guy locally who happened to get 2 of them for Christmas (lucky guy haha, I believe it considering the neighborhood I picked it up from!)
Turned it on and it has a system update. Im one who tinkers, rooting and customizing etc... I rooted and flashed my Galaxy nexus within hours of opening it... and every android phone has been the same way. Im gonna try to keep the device stock for a bit though as I do have a handful of defects that people seem to be complaining about, but they're issues that aren't bothering me if functionality is fine
Issues I do have:
Inconsistent backlight - it is noticably darker near the camera at the top of screen
Strange buzzing noise from the back of the device.. "behind" the left speaker / near the power button corner.. It is definitely eminating from the rear of the tablet. It gets MUCH louder when the brightness is turned down (in fact I can't even hear it with brightness locked @ 100%, but it is really irritating with brightness at minimum)
And the device has a weird smell lol... this will probably go away though, might be from the plastic
Will updating the device make it harder to root the device for flashing purposes? Or is there any odd things from said update that I should know about before proceeding? I don't see any "DO THIS INSTEAD IF YOU HAVE XXX VERSION INSTALLED" type of posts yet so my assumption is no but I feel the need to ask anyway...
Thank you
No. The update will take you to 4.2.1 then you can proceed with rooting. It works the same no matter the version.
The update is minor so all the rooting techniques will work for either version. Every ROM available is using the latest revision, so I would suggest updating via play store before rooting.
To clear up any confusion, take the update. It's okay. It won't do you any harm.

Update makes it easier to root I think actually. Either way just what the others are saying, it will not make it tougher for sure.

This was definitely the opposite case on my HTC G2 (well not mine in particular as I heeded this caution) but G2's that were updated to 2.3.5 would have to force the device to downgrade to 2.2 before they could flash a rooted 2.3.x ROM
Samsung Galaxy S 2 - aka T-Mobile Vibrant - same story.
That was exactly why I asked
I rooted mine with 4.2.1 using mskip's toolkit before it was updated to support it.
There were instructions in the toolkit thread to just use the 4.2 image option for 4.2.1
It was a breeze.

Chances of MDL being available

So my update is on Sept 1, and I plan on going anywhere I need to in order to find a MDL phone. I NEED my CM10.2! haha:angel:.
What are the chances I'll find one? I know they are getting slimmer by the minute, but I'm thinking maybe some rural Target or BB may have one? I've been trying to get my update anytime I'm near a store, but they all tell me I have to wait for the 1st of the Month. dumbbb.
Or do I wait for Note 3/LG G2/new Sony? (i know, i know, s4 forum...)
Or do I wait for the new iphone, sell it on fleabay/cl, and buy a Google Edition s4?
I dont NEED to update right away... But my skyrocket battery is KILLING me.
AHHH I hate this!
I'm on MF3 and I'm suffering with Touchwiz (I'm a huge fan of AOSP).
I'm pretty sure the Note 3 (from AT&T at least) will have a locked boot loader so it'll be the same situation us MF3 users are in right now.
Since MF3 has been out since July, I'd think that many/most S4's would have it. If you're willing to sell/buy unlocked, go ahead for the Google edition(I personally like black mist much more than white frost, which is what the Google edition comes with. ).

Actually, ask if the employee would be kind enough to let you see the stickers on their boxes. The side of the box shows the firmware revision (on brand new devices only). The employees, nor AT&T would have absolutely no reason to update something in-the-box like that, so this sticker should be accurate. It's the same sticker that includes all the serial numbers/etc.
It may or may not be beneficial to explain that you want a specific version of the firmware, otherwise the employee(s) may get a bit suspicious of a request like this. They may think you are trying to steal IMEI numbers or something stupid.

Not exactly a lie. In the very end, MDL does perform better, because we can flash 'whatever' firmware we want... some of which can perform better.
whatever you do, DONT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. install through apk's and then go to cm10.2. you can get terminal and the goomanager files, and install w/o internet....
Just ask to check it out before you buy. Most sales persons won't have an issue with it. Find one with MDL baseband and ask them to Leave it in box and that you prefer to set it up yourself
I'm running cm 10.2 on my s4 its so much better than touch wiz and the only feature I miss is the Samsung camera app.
Also I agree don't connect to the internet until after you have rooted and flashed a custom ROM as you can only delay the mf3 update 3 times before it auto installs
Good luck!

good news! Thanks! Is it september 1 yet?
Well, from here on out...ATT released a statement a few weeks ago stating they no longer will be supporting unlocked devices...which means all their smart phones will theoretically have a locked boot loader.
With that said...personally I wouldn't get another device and sell it for the Google edition. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong someone) the Google edition does not support touchwiz ROMs, only aosp. However you can get the T-Mobile variant which has an unlocked boot loader and allows you to flash anything from touch wiz to aosp based ROMs to the actual Google edition ROM...plus the T-Mobile supports all the bands that ATT uses so you won't have problems with service

the google edition (i9505G) is theoretically an i9505 running a nexus firmware... you should have no issues running a touchwiz rom made for i9505.
funny thing is when i got mine it was on MDL from at&t about a month and a half ago and it never onced tried to update. then i had to do a factory reset which put me on MDB and i want to go back to MDL. theres an over the air update now that im on MDB but i froze the apk because im scared its the MF3 firmware. i'd love to go back to MDL though is that even possible ?
I seen a little bit of bad information here that I feel I should clear up.
When you first get your device on MDL. Just don't insert the SIM card. You can power it on, and keep wifi completely open. No airplane mode needed. The OTA is pushed through on the AT&T network. If you don't have the SIM in on boot, it will not pull the update. The reason behind this is that the Phone verifies the network you are connected to. It can't verify AT&T without the SIM.
The only way you could possibly get the update without the SIM in is if you turn the phone on with the activated SIM, at this point it calls for the update. When on WiFi, it downloads it. So as soon as it calls for the update, you then need to remove required items to stop it. Even if you pull the SIM it will continue the download. So just don't turn it on with the SIM in it. I know this from personal experience and reading the Forums.

Thanks for the clear up! I was under the impression it would download as soon as i was connected to wifi.
Thanks again!:good:
Even if it downloads you don't have to install it. You can always disable the apps that prompt you to update.
I was in the same boat, being ready to upgrade after MF3 was released.
I spent the last two days checking 7 different ATT stores in the Los Angeles area for a 16GB S4 with the MDL firmware, unfortunately they had all been sold or replaced with the newer update. I was lucky to find one store that still had a 32GB version with MDL. I really dont need the extra 16GB, especially for an extra $50, but as long as i can Loki the damn thing Im happy. You might have to look for a 32GB version if you want a chance to find one as these do not sell anywhere near as frequently as the 16GB model.
Just do not put the SIM in until you block the OTA packages.

The above quote is inaccurate. I purchased a used MDL S4 during the last week of August. For the first few days, I did not activate the SIM. However, whenever I turned on Wi-Fi, the update would start to download immediately.
Short story: I placed the su binary and su app on the root of the internal sd card via Samsung Kies, ran CASUAL to root the phone and install twrp, downloaded Quick Terminal via my desktop, placed Quick Terminal on the phone via Kies, installed it, then used Quick Terminal to disable the three apps causing the OTA update as well as delete the fragment of the update that downloaded via Wi-Fi. (I posted the commands in the loki, motochopper thread.)
After doing this, I activated the SIM and didn't have to rush to find a ROM since OTA was disabled.
