Battery Savers - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there any battery savers that keeps you battery from draining so fast when playing games? Some games I play kill my batteries fast even though I'm plugged into my charger when playing.

A battery saver isn't going to help. Whatever game you are playing is causing the tablet to run full tilt and short of forcing an under clock I don't think you are going to win the power war.

Not going to happen. You can turn your brightness down, but apart from dropping your CPU/GPU's maximum frequency (which can cause your games to slow down, and then we'd get complaints about that), a game is basically going to be the most taxing thing a tablet can do. You can turn off your Wi-Fi/Bluetooth radios if you're not using them, though.

High intensity games will drain the battery faster, that's just physics unfortunately. High CPU load and screen use needs more electricity
Instead of an app, you can turn down your brightness to the lowest comfortable minimum, that alone will save a lot. Also turn off wifi as some games pull down ads which would use more battery.

If you don't want to lose performance, Undervolt CPU and GPU, Turn off unnecessary sensors (WiFi, Bluetooth), and turn screen brightness down. You could audio use Greenify but that's bout going to help much when you're gaming. And also try different kernels.
Other than that, there's not much you can do to save battery and not lose performance.

ok thanks

Battery Drains QUICKLY!

I got school at around 6 am. By the time I eat lunch it's already at 57%. By the time I get home around 5 and it's already at 17%.
All I do is listen to music (doubletwist/playerpro) and play Cut the Rope, WTF!?
Cell standy by is 46% in batter usage followed by wifi with 11%
any help guys?
What I tend to do is have brightness down to about half. Have you also tried fully charging the phone, taking the battery out and charging back to full? I sometimes find it drops down but regenerates itself.

Brightness is below half,I never go over. WiFi is on but not all the time.
Stock rom 2.3.4 rooted
Do you have data off?
How's your phone signal most of the time? It has been proven that low/bad signal drains battery quicker than good signal.
Sometimes certain buildings/rooms have pretty bad reception making it a huge drain for your phone.

This is a useful piece of information, however is not really practical. Ideally we don't want to be turning off our phones on every charge :/
I myself own 3 batteries, and alternate them (I have a wall charger for the batteries)
what ver are you using if 2.3.4 the battery issue is fix.
I get 3 /4 bars, at school right new and yea some times I get nothing, especial ly during the subway ruse which is an hour

Once I updated my phone to 2.3.3 I noticed that the battery life was sub-par, only lasting 3/5s of the day on a full charge.
I proceeded to root my phone (as I don't have the money to unlock my Big Red Bootloader); after installing SetCPU I took down the clocking meter 1 notch (768MHz) and the phone is stable with not difference in performance (so far). Doing this and removing some unneeded bloatware has increased my battery life 2.5x and I can go almost 3 days on a single charge.

xiEvo is correct and I've read a lot of good stuff regarding battery life with 2.3.4. I can only begin to imagine what kind of battery life I'll have once I get that update.
get juice defender off the market ultimate version is best. this will lookafter everything for you.. juice defender is a must have app for all android devices

I'm 2.3.4.
Honestly I had the best battery life with 2.3.2, IDK why.

Huge drain during gaming?

I ve decided to play some games on my N4 but noticed very big battery consumption. I ve played 2 races in NFS MW and battery went down from 36 to 18... I am on CM10.1 with cm kernel. Tried faux one and huge drain as well.
How does your N4 behave during games?

It's a demanding game. There's not really anything weird about this. I always turn on airplane mode whenever I play a demanding game like NFS MW. Just turn off mobile data, Wi-Fi, GPS, etc, and your battery should last longer while playing games.
Is your battery drain when not playing games normal?
Yes its fine while not playing. Just gelt a bit dissapointed with the results after gaming. Well if thats normal, then i have to live with it

Try to play a demanding game on your laptop. See how fast your battery drains then . It's normal.

I have the results already. 34 minutes.

Now playing 2 races and draining 18% doesn't seem so bad anymore does it?
If you use faux and his app try:
1. Eco mode and under clock(1.134ghz), Under volt
2. GPU 200
3. Turn off data, lower brightness
Those are settings I use got NFS.

Epsxe/Fpse Battery drain

So actually I am a big fan of ps one games and I can't resist to not play ps1 games on my phone.
Well I am worrying about there battery drain here.
After playing a game on my epsxe and fpse(about 35 minutes) I go from 100% down to 69%
Is it normal? or not?
(also my phone heats up after this amount of time)
Most likely you need to change CPU settings, including voltage.

I am on stock android(rooted)
Can you recommend me a good Rom-Kernel combo ?
Cause this is my first android experince, and I am not sure what the best rom is for a beginner like me is .
I also do not want to damage my phone by tweeking with the cpu and voltage settings.
Should I wait maybe for stable roms? Cause I see alot of nightlies roms.
Also I am not familiar with the term "milestone rom"
Thanks in advance.
Any of the custom kernels should last a bit longer than stock. I use IntersectRaven's kernel. I have fpse but haven't gotten around to putting any iso's on here yet so I'm sorry I can't give any report. You could also try lowering the brightness while you play, and turning off data or just enabling airplane mode if you don't mind not being able top receive calls or texts while you play.

You can stick with stock ROM rooted but you can under clock it. The emulator doesn't need a lot of power, I use yo use it on my 600mhz phone so it should be fine with the nexus. Also stock rooted is the most stable.

Or keep the phone plugged charging while playing, this phone is a battery hog, i mean am not trying to generalize, but seems like some people try to multitask all day long on a mobile device with no removable battery, i mean really, think about a gadget trying to process console games, web, content, gps, screen activity, all at the same time, come on people at the end this is a phone not an alienwarelike or multitasking wireless gaming console

Okitche very
Thanks for the replies guys !
Should I use SetCpu in order to under clock it?
Also I heard many positive things about the franco kernel, is it worth giving a shot?

I haven't tried it personally but, you should still give it a shot. And setcpu is fine.

Most custom kernels lag more than the stock kernel.
If you want to go the custom kernel route for (at the moment) better battery life, go either CyanogenMod(the one included in their ROM) or Franco.

charge finishes faster then it charges? well you're obviously doing something that's making your phone overheat.

thats normal. not even close to overheating, especially while being plugged in. thats even cool compared how warm you can get playing some really intensive games and being plugged in.

Phone overheating issue

My G2 tends to get worryfyingly warm when im using a bit more cpu intensive tasks. The cpu managed to get to 67°C when playing 3 races in NFS Most Wanted and managed to get 76° when doing Antutu benchmarks twice and it started throttling. And battery temp stayed around 40~45°. Idk, if this is supposed to be normal(please bear in mind my previous phone was HTC Evo 3D, which barely got hot ). When idling, the phone is just a bit warm. I'm running OptimusRs Pro V4.1 Stock kernel. Is this supposed to be normal for quad core phones or should I get it to service?
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Oh, and when phone is idle, the cpu is 42°C and battery is 32°
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This is normal the g2 is a very powerful phone without a fan eventually phones will have to have small fans and phones may be noisier than today's phones

I know that, but it tends to get hot very fast, a couple of minutes heavy tasking and its already throttling
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Is it really normal? I mean after 10 mins of browsing even the screen gets really hot..
see if you can check your kernel's cpu profile settings. could be that it's not allowing the cpu to idle when it should be. alot of times there are various profiles you can set it to 'on demand/powersaver/ect...' and this will change the behavior of the cpu's throttling.
Well now we're in the summer and the phone will naturally get hotter since the only thing that cools it down is the environment. If you're browsing under hot sunlight with 100 percent brightness then yes, it is going to get really hot.

its not normal bro. i have the same issue on all aosp roms and cloudyflex roms. my phone becomes really hot. if you give a shot at cloudystock 2.2, your phone wont heat up at all. try it out and be sure to make a nandroid before. just incase if you change ur mind and want to get back to this rom. i wouldnt recommend it though, anthing above 25*C for the battery is bad for its health since its a lithium battery.while the cpu heating up to 70*C is fine i actually use custom throttling to reduce my phone heating that much, i keep the throttling at 60*C
No it gets hot even at 60 percent brigthness while browsing. NFC, BT, 3G are off, i am using only 2 widgets, The top of the phone gets really hot... my sis has S3 and it never ever gets that hot, so do my old Huawei phone..
