My G2 tends to get worryfyingly warm when im using a bit more cpu intensive tasks. The cpu managed to get to 67°C when playing 3 races in NFS Most Wanted and managed to get 76° when doing Antutu benchmarks twice and it started throttling. And battery temp stayed around 40~45°. Idk, if this is supposed to be normal(please bear in mind my previous phone was HTC Evo 3D, which barely got hot ). When idling, the phone is just a bit warm. I'm running OptimusRs Pro V4.1 Stock kernel. Is this supposed to be normal for quad core phones or should I get it to service?

This is normal the g2 is a very powerful phone without a fan eventually phones will have to have small fans and phones may be noisier than today's phones

see if you can check your kernel's cpu profile settings. could be that it's not allowing the cpu to idle when it should be. alot of times there are various profiles you can set it to 'on demand/powersaver/ect...' and this will change the behavior of the cpu's throttling.
Well now we're in the summer and the phone will naturally get hotter since the only thing that cools it down is the environment. If you're browsing under hot sunlight with 100 percent brightness then yes, it is going to get really hot.

its not normal bro. i have the same issue on all aosp roms and cloudyflex roms. my phone becomes really hot. if you give a shot at cloudystock 2.2, your phone wont heat up at all. try it out and be sure to make a nandroid before. just incase if you change ur mind and want to get back to this rom. i wouldnt recommend it though, anthing above 25*C for the battery is bad for its health since its a lithium battery.while the cpu heating up to 70*C is fine i actually use custom throttling to reduce my phone heating that much, i keep the throttling at 60*C
No it gets hot even at 60 percent brigthness while browsing. NFC, BT, 3G are off, i am using only 2 widgets, The top of the phone gets really hot... my sis has S3 and it never ever gets that hot, so do my old Huawei phone..

For some reason it was overheating bad, all I did was reboot the phone and it stopped over heating.....I do have the x99kernal and have it set to on demand 1209 max 245 min, that's not too bad is it?

Run my Shift all day at 1.6gHz, no issues. Once in a while with heavy use it will get warm. But not hot. My TP2 used to get really hot. After looking into it, turned out it was a battery issue.

I had that happen to me 2 weeks ago at a baseball game... The phone was in my pocket as it always is, and the thing started getting extremely hot to the touch within minutes... Also using x99 with kickass governor, 245 min/806 max.
And I did the same thing to fix the problem as you..
Now if I can only figure out why I have no data at all today on the phone..
My girlfriend's Shift began overheating at a wedding not long ago. Was able to track it down to K9 Mail, which was stuck constantly polling the 3G connection. Even a reboot would only stop it for a while. Uninstalled and reinstalled K9 and all was well after that.
Same thing happened to me once when I tried the Pulse app I think. I was looking for a different RSS reader. It got stuck updating or something. I was sitting at work and my phone felt very hot. I noticed data was being transfered and checked the network usage using the *#*#4636#*#* and sure enough Pulse had downloaded over 200mb worth of data that morning on 3G. Once I removed the app it has been fine. I am stock rooted.
Hi guys I am from India and on international s3 and face a problem that s3 get hot upto 48c
I have a solution for this(must be work)
1. First of all disabled bundled stock apps like chat on etc I have attached a screen shot of disabled apps on my s3
2. Off NFC android beam.
3.disable s voice( big battery eater)
4.must disable s memo and exchange mail
5.clear cache of all files and apps weekly
6.flip board users plz clear your cache routinely( this apps has a network bug that eat more battery in less time.
7. Set sync of apps like Google +,mail,wheather to 6 hours.

48°C is really like nothing. I remember SGS 1 & SGS 2 especially were getting almost 60°C.
So - unless some expert denies - I'm pretty sure temperatures up to 70 will not make harm.
With one exception: temperatures above 40° will shorten battery lifespan in the long run. Li-ion batteries don't like this.

That sounds crazy, 70°Celsius? How can you actually still hold the phone on that temp? Almost impossible. My S3 never reached 40° Celsius once so far. But i remeber my HC Desire, when it was very hot outside, it reched almost 50° Celsius and it was HOT like **** in the hand i couldnt hold it very long tbh. And i dont think that this is good for the phone.
70°c can damaged your s3 CPU and you cannot hold the phone. So plz don't make such a comments on temp.

My device is at 40 degree at normal use
I have read (will post the link if I can find it again) that if a battery gets to 140°F then it can go into a self heating mode, not allowing it too cool down, and eventually catch fire. However, I have accidentally left my dx charging in my car on a hot day and when I came back out, it had shut down and had a "battery too hot" notification. That phone would power off if it got too hot.

My gnex once hit 110c CPU temp and it still works fine, it was regularly hitting 80-90c during benchmarks.
To say that 70c will damage a CPU is absolute nonsense, a quad core CPU running at 1.4ghz will hit 65-70c no problem under full load before temperature throttle kicks in and limits the frequency to cool it off.
Battery temp is a different story, 70c battery temp will probably end up damaging your phone/battery.

Yes I do mean Celsius, and a CPU isn't made of water...
It shut off as that is the safety cut off point for that particular CPU.
I had temperature throttle turned off.
Quite a few people have hit that temperature, go to the gnex forums and ask Simms22 if you want further proof.
I KNOW a CPU can handle that heat because I have actually seen it.

I agree with nodstuff and I can confirm
The same thing with my Gnex (not with the same kernel ) With a modified CPU temp limit my Gnex is going up to 98°C, never try with the CPU temp limit disabled but indeed it shut down at 110°C, it's a fact and it's in some doc of TI.
And about the temp of the SIII here we talk about the temp of the battery, not the CPU temp, this is not the same thing, although there is some correlation (but actually with, for example, a battery temp of 50°C, we don't know the real and actually CPU temp)..
When will you have an CPU temp in the SIII??? There is a CPU temp sensor but If I'm not wrong for an application to read the temp the kernel must support it (it's hardcoded).And as far as I know actually there is no way of knowing the CPU temp.
At first with the Gnex it was the same thing, no CPU temp and Franciscofranco has enabled it (the reading by an app) in his app (and also with anothe 3rd apps after) so we can see the CPU temp in real time.
I really missed this feature with the SIII...
May b it can handle so much of heat ..but the question is about using the device whn its hot..do u think its will b very convenient to use the device whn the device is at 100 degree?

Its not just the cpu.. when the heat is dissipated the whole area including the screen gets hot.

Hot for sure but obviously not the same temperature of the CPU.
Temperature dissipated, yes, but not 100% transmitted at all the phone. CPU at 110°C you can imagine that the screen is not at this temperature for example, like the back cover, otherwise beware of burns and it's not the case.
When my Gnex reached 98°C it was hot but not unable to hold in hand.
Guys, you never used a Gnex (or another phone maybe) without a CPU temp limit, so disabled, or a modified CPU temp limit with an higher limit before thermal throttling...? The phone is still usuable.when I read you speak about very hot, extremely hot, or overheating with a battery temp of 45°C... Should not you know the CPU temp...

Hello so I bought my N4 on the Dec 3 batch and got it around Feb, the works fine and all but I have 2 main questions
1. The phone gets hot doing simple tasks like browsing the web or watching a youtube video. I am running the CM 10.1 Nightlies and Franco's Kernel r110. Sometimes the phone can get really hot which I then stop using it to prevent any damage. Does this have anything to do with the Custom ROM or kernel because my friend's N4 is stock and unrooted and hes doesn't have any heat issues.
2. The battery on the phone is not what I expected. I hear people who get 4-5 hours on screen time, but I get around 2-2.5. Also I am on a Canadian provider which is Mobilicity if that has anything to do with it. I leave 3G on mostly and just surf the web when the screen is on.
Thanks for any input you guys leave.
If you can take it back to stock and don't root because that is why your friend's N4 is normal besides what more do you want that the N4 doesn't have?

As always "overheating" is very subjective, it depends on how you feel the heat.
CPU / battery temperature?
In any case there is a protection, a thermal throttling. At certain CPU / battery temperatures the CPU frequence is automatically lowered to help reduce the temperature. In extreme temperature the phone shutdown to avoid damages so no worries.
In 3G the phone heated a little more, no problem here that the phone heats up when you re browsing or you're watching a video on Youtube.
You can try to undervolt a little to see if that helps.
As for battery life it depends on too many factors... CPU settings, screen brightness, signal quality, etc...
Search about your questions in this section or in the General section, there are lots of threads about it.
What temperature does your phone actually get? When running stock it would be impossible to see my phone get other 43c and that was only under very heavy gaming but would usually be at 32-36c ive noticed my phone does get hotter when using mobile data instead of wifi. Now running rasbean with franco m1 and temps abit lower gaming has improved greatly but i dont think there is any difference in battery life compared to stock but your 2-2.5 screen time does seem abit low as i get with just web browsing maybe few youtube vids and few minutes of games around 4 hours screen time but i also envy those who are getting 5+ hours

Also does my carrier have anything to do with it because brightness on my phone is pretty low and simple stuff tends to drain my battery.

When i was using a case on my phone it was getting hot from top to bottom but now i don't use case it doesn't get as hot and usually stays cooler at bottom half. I have found most accurate way to check your battery temp is by going on call and dialling *#*#4636#*#* and a hidden menu will come up and tap battery information you will see temp, there was an app that had same info but cant remember name so when you think its hot dial that code and let me know what temp it shows. Also are you using mobile internet or wifi when its getting hot?

Yep mine also gets noticeably hotter on 3g and yeah it gets hot at the top but after a while will spread to bottom to thats normal. I am currently running rasbean rom with franco milestone 1 and also downloaded pimp my rom from play it has various tweaks and mods so i just flashed battery saving which supposed to help with battery not sure what it does though lol but i managed to get 3 hours 40 mins screen time half of time it was on minimum brightness and other half on 40% was just internet browsing and im sure you will agree that is very good considering i was using 3g the whole time

Just an update you should try undervolting on franco as i have now done it and it definitely helps with heating and i am pretty sure it has vastly improved my battery life if your interested i will post the values i have used which seems to be perfectly stable so far

do you have the franco app? As that was what i used to change my setting if yes just go on frequencies/voltages go down to voltages and change from there i have attached screenshot of my setting and make you do not set voltages on boot as if it is unstable your phone is not going to boot up if that is ticked, you will have to change that everytime you reboot until you are sure its stable then u can set on boot

Do you have a bad signal? Because if so then that will drain your battery a lot more quickly and also possibly make the phone heat up more.

I bought my nexus 7 about three days ago and I think I have an issue.
When browsing the internet or watching a movies my nexus can reach 35c and when playing tegra 3/Gameloft games it reaches 39-40c is it normal? Happens to all?
It's little annoying and I can't enjoy these games....

sorry if i offend you with this question, but is it possible that you were looking at your battery temp, not cpu?
because usually those temps are from the battery, it seems just too low for almost a high end device (atleast it was)

I have had the same issues with the heat on my device. I notice it gets pretty warm quick right where the rear camera is and also the glass gets pretty hot too. I been playing minecraft and it heats up quick, I checked the battery temp with an app and it reached to 31C. This was from playing for about 15 minutes. Browsing the net or watching youtube doesn't have much effect but watching a video with the browser did make the device pretty warm. I gotta admit when playing games its pretty uncomfortable.
Even 40c isn't that hot for an electronic device. I remember my old Galaxy S 4G used to get a battery temperature of 52+ while charging and playing guns n glory in a non air conditioned guard house. Every so often I'd stick it in our mini fridge for a few mins to cool it down.
I would've loved to see how hot that poor processor got, but battery temp was the only one you could check on that device.

Does the overheating eventually kill my S4? I have CM 11 (Android 4.4.2) and the problem still persist. I can't update via OTA since its rooted. I also don't want to lose any apps because they are large apps and dont want to bother to download them again. So will it actually gonna kill my S4 someday?

The Android 4.4.2 for S4 is leaked version. It is not published Officially by samsung and it may has many bugs. (eg. overheating, ...)
Overheating can eventually cause some serious problems. The board is able to adjust slightly with flexing caused by heat, but eventually soldered connections will give in and break if your device is getting extremely hot. When or what is causing it to get so hot?

No it won't break the HD Super Amoled screen.
Overheating will eventually cause logic board failures and shorten the batteries' life span

Not a little bit hot but perheps if it reaches 85 degrees+ all the time. But even in doing so it will still (from my experience) last longer that you'd ever keep this phone for.

They have quite a few apps out there for monitoring temps and whatnot. I personally use Android Tuner for everything I monitor. As a huge plus, this app is one of the most versatile apps (especially if rooted) I've come across and have had for a long time. Its good for adjusting or tuning down anything that may cause overheating as well as view summaries of the culprits

I agree. You don't hear too often about someone's phone overheating to the point of failure. I've seen one phone that would get so hot you almost couldn't hold it in your hand, and had a habit of doing that but was ultimately broken months later by a shopping cart.:silly:
Still a decent monitoring app (among dozens on the market) can help you monitor temps and pinpoint when, where, and what is causing problems.

I disabled my Google account stuff and sync and removed the sim card because I use this phone as a gaming device. When I play a few rounds of subway surfers it already gets to medium warm and for 3D games it gets warmer more faster.

I would say you are safe in that temp range. Its when you get 80 C and above that that's causing damage. Also are these temps from the battery or the CPU? The CPU can and will get to 60 C temps at times which is normal.
CPU I played the game six guns for almost an hour and it didn't go over 65 C and I think I totally screwed up my ext SDcard

If you are having heating problems while playing 3D games alone then you might want to try experimenting with using different GPU settings. You can try tuning down the frequency. It may or may not help with temp being its only a frequency setting. Try also using the app "Greenify" to put as many of the remaining apps that you don't absolutely need running into hibernation. Greenify is a lot more efficient when it comes to keeping apps from using resources.

How to adjust the GPU frequency settings? Does this affect the quality of the game after its adjusted? But I do not think adjusting the GPU frequency settings will work. The overheating problem is caused by the CPU. May try Greenify app.

If your GPU is capable of adjusting the frequency then it will show you in the Android Tuner app next to the CPU settings, but you're right it wont help with overheating. You can set your CPU governor to "powersaver" and underclock by sliding the max frequency setting down one step at a time until you notice a difference in temp. Greenify is a huge help mainly with battery saving which in turn stops a lot of unnecessary CPU draw.
Does under clocking CPU will cause large 3S games crash? Hope it doesnt

Bad idea. When I change it to power save it makes every sluggish and laggy even I turn one step down the CPU thing its sluggish
