Is the phone overclocked? if so turn the CPU scaling down

For some reason it was overheating bad, all I did was reboot the phone and it stopped over heating.....I do have the x99kernal and have it set to on demand 1209 max 245 min, that's not too bad is it?

No I run mine at 1.5 mostly they just get hot from time to time
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Run my Shift all day at 1.6gHz, no issues. Once in a while with heavy use it will get warm. But not hot. My TP2 used to get really hot. After looking into it, turned out it was a battery issue.

What are we talking about for normal battery temperature vs one that I should worry about? I have serious battery issues and I am on my second phone because the 1st one wouldn't last more than 2 hours. I barely have any programs running and it won't last more than 4 hours. Thanks!

I had that happen to me 2 weeks ago at a baseball game... The phone was in my pocket as it always is, and the thing started getting extremely hot to the touch within minutes... Also using x99 with kickass governor, 245 min/806 max.
And I did the same thing to fix the problem as you..
Now if I can only figure out why I have no data at all today on the phone..
My girlfriend's Shift began overheating at a wedding not long ago. Was able to track it down to K9 Mail, which was stuck constantly polling the 3G connection. Even a reboot would only stop it for a while. Uninstalled and reinstalled K9 and all was well after that.
Same thing happened to me once when I tried the Pulse app I think. I was looking for a different RSS reader. It got stuck updating or something. I was sitting at work and my phone felt very hot. I noticed data was being transfered and checked the network usage using the *#*#4636#*#* and sure enough Pulse had downloaded over 200mb worth of data that morning on 3G. Once I removed the app it has been fine. I am stock rooted.

its been doing it for the past 2 months or so just didnt kno if it was normal.. cuz I never really realized it with my last 3 vibrants.. but I might not of been paying attention tho... But my phone is getting up to 121° while on the charger just sitting there

I'm on stock JI6 and I've been noticing my battery getting hot as well.
Gonna try using my spare (and never used before other new) battery and see if that remedies anything.
I'm on stock JI6 also. Never had a problem with hot battery until...
I played Quake 3 Arena for about 30 minutes. Afterwards I noticed my battery was hot and battery life was terrible (from full charge to about 30%) sitting idle overnight. This happened for about 3 days.
I used Astro Explorer and closed Q3A process, no change. Rebooted phone and no more hot battery and normal battery life, all is well again. Strange. I guess some processes are 'hidden' and can't be closed without reboot.
I was getting a hot battery while running TW Core kernel. I flashed JAC XMOD 1.1 kernel and my battery has stayed cool.

Currently at 102.2F as reported by setcpu widget while plugged in and using it for the past half hour or so. Seems kinda high to me, what's everyone elses experience?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Well when its plugged in it will be warmer than normal. Right now my phone has been on with constant texting and random other usage all day long and I am at 80.6 degrees
My phone stays in the mid 90s and early 100s with regular use. It only gets in the 80s if I leave it completely alone for an hour or so.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I stay mostly in the 80s and can get into the 90s with heavy use. Don't think I've ever passed 100, but there's a chance something like psx4droid could have pushed me up. I average about 86F.

Do you use the SetCPU profiles? You could set one to underclock the processor while charging.

I do, its set to 800mhz when charging. 600mhz if it gets above 104F regardless of charging or not. Leaving it alone on the charger for the last half hour the temp shows 92F. Just firing up Xda app and typing this out the temp has jumped to 98F in about a min of use.

Are you guys using SetCPU for profiles and overclocking, or are you just using it for checking temps and current speed?
These are the droids you are looking for.

I was using it to check temps for this but I use 2 profiles, which may help my temps (def helps my batt). The default profile is 1000 max, 300 min, on demand. The other is when my screen is shut off, 300 max, 300 min. I've found this has saved me a pretty sizeable chunk of battery. I tend to listed to music 7-8 hours a day and while it doesnt need full CPU it will use it if it gets the chance. Restricting the proc to 300 off has never caused any issues and I can get from 8am - 4 or 5pm staying over 70% battery I have the unstable apps overclock and used it for a while, but kinda came to the conclusion that I can't really justify needing to overclock yet as I never see any lag. I guess if I run into any lag at some point I'll prob clock back up to 1.3 or so.

I did overclock, but it ran way too hot, like 107F during normal use and didnt get below 100 dormant. 1gig is high enough to me. I have it set to underclock when charging or when below 50% battery or when above 104F.

Only other idea I have is downloading Droid Overclock and try running at low or ultra low voltage. Make sure to make a backup first. And try low before ultra low. Individual devices can be picky about a lower voltage and can go into a bootloop if it can't run on a lower voltage. Droid Overclock has profiles like SetCPU.

Alright I wasn't going to make a thread on this because this topic is already discussed elsewhere naturally but I feel my situation is different. All over the place I see people reporting great battery life with ICS.. well mine is HORRIBLE. I just flashed the latest nightly for Pete's bugless. I didn't change the kernel. Everything is stock. Only a few apps installed. Noop for scheduler and ondemand for governer.
The phones been off the charger for 55 minutes and I'm sitting at 76%. Idk what's going on. I've tried so many rom/kernel combos and I seem to get the same exact battery life no matter what. Around 6-9 hours with less than 1 hour of screen on time.
Things I've tried to combat this:
Undervolting
Freezing apps
Restricting background data
Underclocking
Brightness set to auto
And I'm sure a few other things I'm forgetting about. I've done all this and still get ****ty battery life. I've flashed the new radio hoping that it would solve my issues but no dice. My signal strength reports at -67 dbm yet the bars never go over 2. 3g or 4g. Even after updating plr.
On gingerbread cm7 I ran brightness at 70%, ocd to 1.4ghz and always got 15+ hours.
For the love of god someone help me. Cuz I think my phone hates the cream sammiches.

try this kernel, trinity teuv underclocked/undervolted kernel, oc'd gpu http://goo.gl/rY6ga
and do not set brightness to auto, its a battery killer. i keep my brightness at about 20-25%.
also, be sure to fully discharge your battery then charge it completely, after 2 or 3 cycles you should be good.

I do this every day lol I let the battery drain to around 15-30% before I plug it back in.
Screenie: 1 hour later and I lost another 25% this can't be rom or kernel related. As I have tried trinity already and the same thing happens

i was having horrible battery drain after flashing a new rom & kernel - i finally figured it out that my APN settings were messed up and I re-entered them according to the correct carrier settings.
i don't know if that will apply to you since it looks like your 4G data is working properly, but since I was on wifi 99% of the time, as soon as I went off, my data didn't work. but it's something to look at.
4 hours later I'm down to 4% from a full charge.

I would be interested to see what your battle life diff is without 4g switched on. Also in that 4 hrs what was ur screen on time?
Have you thought of trying a new batt? Just got an OEM Samsung for 5 bucks on eBay. Worth a shot.
Oh remove fb app it blows...install friend caster way better less batt make sure you change the sync interval.
You could also try green power from the market to manage your data use while screen is off.

Ok here's how my battery performs back in cm7 nightly 174 gingerbread. Almost 4 hours and only 25% chipped away. If you look above you'll notice I lost more than 40% in the same time with ics. And I'm doing nothing different. I'm even overclocked to 1.3ghz ondemand with noop for a scheduler.
I think I'm sticking to gbread until official source is out. Maybe then ill get the same battery life.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
That is really weird, if you have time try Milestone 3 and SG's latest kernel and just leave the settings stock . I get wonderful battery life with it hopefully you do to
Oh and are there any apps you are using on ICS that you aren't on CM7?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Nope. Lately its only been a handful. I actually have more apps installed on gbread to achieve some of the features that are baked into ics. I just don't get it. Ics hates my phone. I even used the GPS today. So weird.

This. If you are installing the same ol battery-draining POS app then you are not going to fix it with any rom or kernel.
So you guys think my batter watcher widget is preventing my phone from sleeping properly? Ok.. I'm on cm7 right now. Battery is def back to normal. And this is with bacround data on. Ill delete bw and get better battery stats.

Better battery stats is not the same thing as other (mostly useless) monitoring apps.
Look. 16 hours on gb. If none of my apps are killing the battery then what could it be?

The only kernel adjustments were to the governor and scheduler (using smartass and sio, no alterations to either). I just tried using the rescan media disabler apk to see if maybe my media was causing the phone to run hot. It seemed to be the only thing going in the background.

Usually the heat starts when I am using the phone, which is usually browsing the internet or reading up on sports news. Screen off or charging I have been OK so far. As far as the battery, it appears to be in good physical condition. I also have 2 OEM batteries by Anker that experience the same issue. So far so good, though - been using the phone moderately since the last shut down earlier today and it seems ok at this moment.

if it heats up really bad again try underclocking a step and see if that helps.....phone might be getting hot because your chip is poorly coated and the higher frequiencies are heating it up enough to shut the device down. you may have to underclock by one or 2 steps to ensure its not a consistent issue.....worth a shot anyways. unless you do high graphic gaming and multitask with 8 apps at once your really dont need the higher clock speeds anyways.

If you just got this phone Friday then I would return to stock, run triangle away and exchange it. What you describe isn't normal, why take a chance and get stuck with a bad phone when you are within the exchange window.

Seriously guys, your S4 doesn't heat up at all???
I'm back to 100% stock everything (kernel, rom) and running this for a couple weeks. I've completed several factory resets and whatnot as well through those weeks. I know my install was clean as could be.
Now, my phone gets hot at seemingly random times. sometimes playing games, for sure while navigating with GPS and sometimes when its just sitting there. I monitor things with Better Battery Stats and keep an eye on the CPU Spy. I'm achieving deep sleep most often. Some of this is caused by the god awful Sprint service here and the constant search for signal, but I was hoping that this wouldn't get as hot as the S3.
so, should I seek a refurb from Sprint? I have the insurance. I am just afraid that a refurb would do me no better.
My biggest gripes are heating up occasionally, WiFi disconnect issues. I hope 4.3 can help some of these.
My G2 tends to get worryfyingly warm when im using a bit more cpu intensive tasks. The cpu managed to get to 67°C when playing 3 races in NFS Most Wanted and managed to get 76° when doing Antutu benchmarks twice and it started throttling. And battery temp stayed around 40~45°. Idk, if this is supposed to be normal(please bear in mind my previous phone was HTC Evo 3D, which barely got hot ). When idling, the phone is just a bit warm. I'm running OptimusRs Pro V4.1 Stock kernel. Is this supposed to be normal for quad core phones or should I get it to service?
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Oh, and when phone is idle, the cpu is 42°C and battery is 32°
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This is normal the g2 is a very powerful phone without a fan eventually phones will have to have small fans and phones may be noisier than today's phones
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I know that, but it tends to get hot very fast, a couple of minutes heavy tasking and its already throttling
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Is it really normal? I mean after 10 mins of browsing even the screen gets really hot..
see if you can check your kernel's cpu profile settings. could be that it's not allowing the cpu to idle when it should be. alot of times there are various profiles you can set it to 'on demand/powersaver/ect...' and this will change the behavior of the cpu's throttling.
Well now we're in the summer and the phone will naturally get hotter since the only thing that cools it down is the environment. If you're browsing under hot sunlight with 100 percent brightness then yes, it is going to get really hot.

its not normal bro. i have the same issue on all aosp roms and cloudyflex roms. my phone becomes really hot. if you give a shot at cloudystock 2.2, your phone wont heat up at all. try it out and be sure to make a nandroid before. just incase if you change ur mind and want to get back to this rom. i wouldnt recommend it though, anthing above 25*C for the battery is bad for its health since its a lithium battery.while the cpu heating up to 70*C is fine i actually use custom throttling to reduce my phone heating that much, i keep the throttling at 60*C
No it gets hot even at 60 percent brigthness while browsing. NFC, BT, 3G are off, i am using only 2 widgets, The top of the phone gets really hot... my sis has S3 and it never ever gets that hot, so do my old Huawei phone..
