Someone help me! (BatLife woes) - Nexus S General

Alright I wasn't going to make a thread on this because this topic is already discussed elsewhere naturally but I feel my situation is different. All over the place I see people reporting great battery life with ICS.. well mine is HORRIBLE. I just flashed the latest nightly for Pete's bugless. I didn't change the kernel. Everything is stock. Only a few apps installed. Noop for scheduler and ondemand for governer.
The phones been off the charger for 55 minutes and I'm sitting at 76%. Idk what's going on. I've tried so many rom/kernel combos and I seem to get the same exact battery life no matter what. Around 6-9 hours with less than 1 hour of screen on time.
Things I've tried to combat this:
Undervolting
Freezing apps
Restricting background data
Underclocking
Brightness set to auto
And I'm sure a few other things I'm forgetting about. I've done all this and still get ****ty battery life. I've flashed the new radio hoping that it would solve my issues but no dice. My signal strength reports at -67 dbm yet the bars never go over 2. 3g or 4g. Even after updating plr.
On gingerbread cm7 I ran brightness at 70%, ocd to 1.4ghz and always got 15+ hours.
For the love of god someone help me. Cuz I think my phone hates the cream sammiches.

try this kernel, trinity teuv underclocked/undervolted kernel, oc'd gpu http://goo.gl/rY6ga
and do not set brightness to auto, its a battery killer. i keep my brightness at about 20-25%.
also, be sure to fully discharge your battery then charge it completely, after 2 or 3 cycles you should be good.

I do this every day lol I let the battery drain to around 15-30% before I plug it back in.
Screenie: 1 hour later and I lost another 25% this can't be rom or kernel related. As I have tried trinity already and the same thing happens
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Ugh. Another 20% gone. Its only been a half hour from the above screenie. You guys see my dilemma? Lol **** me.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

21% ..
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

i was having horrible battery drain after flashing a new rom & kernel - i finally figured it out that my APN settings were messed up and I re-entered them according to the correct carrier settings.
i don't know if that will apply to you since it looks like your 4G data is working properly, but since I was on wifi 99% of the time, as soon as I went off, my data didn't work. but it's something to look at.

4 hours later I'm down to 4% from a full charge.

Could you try better battery stats to see if something is holding a wakelock?

I would be interested to see what your battle life diff is without 4g switched on. Also in that 4 hrs what was ur screen on time?
Have you thought of trying a new batt? Just got an OEM Samsung for 5 bucks on eBay. Worth a shot.
Oh remove fb app it blows...install friend caster way better less batt make sure you change the sync interval.
You could also try green power from the market to manage your data use while screen is off.

Ok here's how my battery performs back in cm7 nightly 174 gingerbread. Almost 4 hours and only 25% chipped away. If you look above you'll notice I lost more than 40% in the same time with ics. And I'm doing nothing different. I'm even overclocked to 1.3ghz ondemand with noop for a scheduler.
I think I'm sticking to gbread until official source is out. Maybe then ill get the same battery life.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

That is really weird, if you have time try Milestone 3 and SG's latest kernel and just leave the settings stock . I get wonderful battery life with it hopefully you do to
Oh and are there any apps you are using on ICS that you aren't on CM7?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

Nope. Lately its only been a handful. I actually have more apps installed on gbread to achieve some of the features that are baked into ics. I just don't get it. Ics hates my phone. I even used the GPS today. So weird.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Try what I suggested unless you did already then ignore lol

Could it be a faulty battery?

This. If you are installing the same ol battery-draining POS app then you are not going to fix it with any rom or kernel.

So you guys think my batter watcher widget is preventing my phone from sleeping properly? Ok.. I'm on cm7 right now. Battery is def back to normal. And this is with bacround data on. Ill delete bw and get better battery stats.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Better battery stats is not the same thing as other (mostly useless) monitoring apps.

Look. 16 hours on gb. If none of my apps are killing the battery then what could it be?

Battery life.

I havehorrible batter life and it takes forever for this phone to charge and it overheats. I'm using the andromeda kernal and OC widget. Can someone tell me some settings I should use? Or tweaks or whatever? I'm talking non-commonsense stuff (not stuff like "turn 4g off")

Wow, 3 hours huh? I'm at least getting 8. I was getting 15 or 20 hours, but then started putting lots of widgets on my screens and that really killlllllllllled it
I usemy phone a lot. I was spoiled by my hero. I was getting days on a single charge with the same usage, if not, more. I wish I knew what's killing it so fast :/ spare prts says the screen is a majority of power consumption, but I usually have brightness on 0 (its plenty bright enough. It seems brighter than my hero at 50% ).

2 hours of screen time there, that seems about normal to me. I'm lucky if I squeeze out 3 hours of screen time throughout the day.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
It depends entirely on what you are doing. 2 hours of screen time (even in ideal conditions) will most likely get through half of your battery.
What screen brightness settings do you use?
What were you doing with the "screen on"? (i.e. gaming, video etc).
What kernel do you use? Try the Faux 1.0 Ghz kernel (if not already) and consider undervolting.
I imagine with the combo of Faux's stock kernel, undervolting and perhaps reducing screen brightness will see 5ish hours of screen time.
It was on around 85% brightness due to being under direct sunlight.
My kernel is faux's 1.45 for CM
Over 80% of the time the clock was around 200, 400MHZ as stated by SetCPU, and both those clocks are undervolted by 50.
I was browsing the whole time.

Wow no wonder. Roaming for 2 hours with brightness nearly on full will definitely drain your battery.v Plus the 1.45 Ghz kernel overclocks the RAM and GPU also. You might want to get an anti glare screen-protector and flash the 1.3 Ghz kernel and use wifi.

Umm... wifi wasn't an option back there, and I don't use screen protectors. BUT I didn't know that bit of fact from faux's kernel, I'll put in the 1.3
BTW, Green power pro does help a ****load on keeping battery alive.
ps: anyway to control RAM and GPU clocks the way we do with SetCPU with the... well... cpu?

I don't believe setcpu functions correctly for dual core devices, I remember reading, albeit a while ago, setcpu only effects 1 core, leaving the second untamed.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Stock cm kernel has plenty of ass behind it, no ones playing bf3 on their handsets....yet...

Watchdog shows the suspend process and android media process taking up about 30% usage constantly. Signal is strong when I'm at work, constant 4-5 bars H+
Even after a full wipe and clean install of CM7 those same processes throw up alerts immediately, I will get al alert for the suspend process every few mins.
Background data off, no email syncing or anything. I'm lucky to get 3 hours screen on time or pandora streaming. I bought a new Motorola battery about a month ago and I don't use GPS or wifi.
Running stock, aura or homebase and the drain is gone... they aren't any good IMO tho.
For now I'm carrying a spare charger everywhere I go till the nexus prime is released.

I have the same issue, it is isolated to Sense roms. It doesn't happen with AOSP, which is why those are the only roms I can use due to the battery life. We had a thread going for a while with some other people who had the same problem, but nobody could really get to the bottom of it. I reached out to Aamikam but he couldn't really help or didn't want to. I didn't know if a logcat or anything would have helped but no one really answered me. It happens on froyo and gingerbread sense roms, and I never had the issue for a long time but then I noticed it the first time on MikFroyo 4.62. I've tried everything since then but no results.
Only thing to do right now is switch to an AOSP rom, I highly recommend Team Nocturnal's Xplod. Very smooth with Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and more eye candy than CM7. I would love to be able to use MikG again but my battery literally dies in 4 hours, regardless if I'm using the phone or not.
Alot of ppl seem to think that 75 percent or more of display is bad. Really it isn't. The battery stats need to equal 100 percent. On sense roms that's the way it is and there is nothing wrong with it. Now if your experiencing high.android system usage, that's a problem. As long as everything else is relatively low, its all good
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Its after I installed the new update. Even downgraded to earlier gingerbread and still 75 plus.
Yes my system is low but I can watch my battery meter lower in realtime. Well I guess its time for a new toy.

If your actively using your phone and it drains rapidly that's pretty normal in my experience. But if its draining a lot during idle, check for a rogue running app. Otherwise not using auto brightness is a good mentioned trick along with underclocking with a new kernel should help
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It has to do with the use of a generic power_profile.xml. Neither CM or stock use correct values for this.

You don't get it...this is not normal display usage. I remember what my battery usage and battery life was like before this problem came up and there was a huge difference. Before, cell standby was my highest usage and I could get 25-30 hours on a charge. Then display usage shot up to 90% give or take some, and battery life dropped to 4-8 hours. I can understand if display was slightly higher than everything else, but display is at 75-95% while everything else is under 5 or 10. There is absolutely no reason why the display usage should be that high even when the screen has been OFF the entire time. That's not normal. I have multiple screen shots to back it up.

How's your phone signal most of the time? It has been proven that low/bad signal drains battery quicker than good signal.
Sometimes certain buildings/rooms have pretty bad reception making it a huge drain for your phone.

This is a useful piece of information, however is not really practical. Ideally we don't want to be turning off our phones on every charge :/
I myself own 3 batteries, and alternate them (I have a wall charger for the batteries)
what ver are you using if 2.3.4 the battery issue is fix.

Once I updated my phone to 2.3.3 I noticed that the battery life was sub-par, only lasting 3/5s of the day on a full charge.
I proceeded to root my phone (as I don't have the money to unlock my Big Red Bootloader); after installing SetCPU I took down the clocking meter 1 notch (768MHz) and the phone is stable with not difference in performance (so far). Doing this and removing some unneeded bloatware has increased my battery life 2.5x and I can go almost 3 days on a single charge.

Massive battery issues

Hello folks.
I'm currently on Aokp 4.2.2 unofficial with Francos r90 Kernel, bootloader and Radio are both updated. I'm suffering from massive battery draining. I guess something isnt letting my CPU sleep properly, as i always get messages like "100% awake while screen off" from battery stats plus. I'm just getting up to 2 hours screen on time, and battery is falling by about ~7% / hour With normal usage (whatsapp, News, xda) and like 15 Minuten screen on time in that hour. Also, see the attached Images. I sometimes have wakelocks by audioOut_2 and as you can See, maps is using more battery than the Display itself.
On an additional Note, GPS is always off, im using Taster to locate, but with cell near only.
Would be very Kind to help me out of this issues, thank you a bunch!

Turn off Location Services for a little bit to see if that helps.
You should try a program like autostarts, and don't allow things to run unless explicitly started by yourself. This way it'll help identify if there is an misbehaving program.
I saw you were using franco r90 which could be an issue. Try going back to the last stable
I think you will like this application.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5vYXNpc2ZlbmcuZ3JlZW5pZnkiXQ..
This simple application will make your annoying applications to go to sleep. Therefore your phone can finally go to sleep like it should when it's not in use. I see that Google maps seems to be the culprit in your battery drain. You can use titanium backup and delete it and install it back again from the play store. After that you can use the application that I've given you and force it to go tot sleep.
Here's the forum for the application:

Coming from the iphone 4, good battery life is the most important thing i miss. I need a rock solid reliable phone or else would have started to mess around a read about Kernels to see how they may help with better battery life. My iPhone would last me 3-4 days of general use. To me General use is very light use..! With nexus it lasts max 1-2 days but more importantly i need to be concious what the battery level is. With th eiphone i never really bothered as i knoew i would get at least 2 days if not more.
