Yet Another Touchscreen Responsiveness Thread - Nexus 7 (2013) General

I know there have been a few (perhaps this is an understatement) threads about the touchscreen wonkiness some users are experiencing, but I'd like a consolidated bit of advice.
My touchscreen is weird. Sometimes everything seems perfectly normal, but I've noticed a few examples of it being weird:
When trying to put an app shortcut on the homescreen (long pressing) it often doesn't work; it seems to think I am moving my finger when I'm not
When in drawing apps, if I try to draw fine lines, sometimes it registered random points and lines on other parts of the screen
Using a multitouch test app, it periodically will register a third touch when only using two fingers
The keyboard double taps letters almost every single time I type
So my questions are:
Do you think this is a software issue? If so, how do you explain some people not having the problem.
Do you think my best bet is to exchange it? I have no issues other than the touchscreen (no light bleed, etc.) and I'm a little scared I'll get a worse unit.
What are your experiences with these issues?
Thanks for reading!

I had a perfect 16gb that I returned in order to get a 32gb. The 32gb had the horrible touch screen issues. Using YAMTT app, it would register multiple touches long after I was no longer touching the device. I returned it to Best Buy and got a new 32gb and it doesn't have the issues. At first I thought it was the JSS update, so I didn't accept for a few days. Went ahead and updated and still have no issues on my new device.

This has already been documented, the primary thread for this is over in the Q&A section AFAIK currently. Which is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381123

Mine is super extra mega responsive.... ANOTHER GREAT PRODUCT...
Update....
Its some timing today hopefully software I love my 32gb

I am basically having the same issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2395289
A reboot seems to help mine. Mine does not seem as bad as some peoples. I am trying to decide if I need to exchange it or not. It sounds like it might be software more than a faulty one off hardware.

Mine seems completely fine outside of the occasional freak bug with finger-sliding on my keyboard pressing like 80 keys. Fixes itself if I lift my finger up.
I have a 32 GB.

Don't know where it is at the moment, but there is a thread over on the Google Products forums regarding this. Google knows of the issue, and as of a few days ago, they are looking into a fix. I think it's software. People say that the second upgrade you do ruins it and makes the touch less responsive. So, I think it will be fixed with a new update. Just give it some time. I'm trying not to think about it. Don't wanna ruin it for me. Hehe. Hang in there. If it REALLY bothers you, exchange it for another one. Obviously, you run the risk of not getting rid of the problem. Who knows.

I had this problem at first. I think it is just a heck of a lot more sensitive, interpreting varying pressure of my finger as movement as the "footprint" changes. After I got used to how lightly I should press compared to the previous Nexus, the problems went away.

Interesting, I also had a 16gb with no issues, then exchanged for a 32 and now I got the touchscreen problems! Gonna go exchange it again, maybe back to a 16

Mine is working fine but i noticed when placing my hand on it when i use YAMTT, it will register 3-6 point and starts flipping. When i pull my hand away these points keep on flipping for some seconds. It is over responsive compared to my S2 which registers Zer0 points when i put my hand on it (the way it should be). This was happening with JSS15Q as well as JSS15R now.

Got the phantom touch bug on my 16gb n7 2013.
Seems to only do it if it is laying flat!!! Hold it vertically and it works fine.
Logged job with Google to replace and the idiots have shipped me a 2012 version. Really angry.

This happened to mine, when i use with cover and problem is reduce but it still there.
-Hard to find N7 Gen II (built July and August) with 100% working as it should be. I just hope new firmware can fix problem if NOT it's hardware problem.
-I may grab another one built September, mostly happened on devices built July and August.
-Mine built August when i first open it i full of surprised, a lot of dust inside and outside of plastic wrap, i just wonder where the F they do packaging indoor or outdoor.

Flashing one of sfhub's custom touchscreen fixes helps for most of the issues. I use ts20 and it works 98%. 2% of the time it just locks up/stops taking input for a second or two. I've only really noticed it when playing games (terraria).
ts10 worked well but would occasionally freak out with a bunch of inputs.
None of this would be noticeable outside of game playing.
Sfhubs fixes are pretty great. At least get it usable until Google figures it out.
I was hoping 15R update would have fixed this but still waiting.

Oh ASUS...

So my first transformer was awesome except for the touchscreen that was unresponsive on a whole line across the tablet, the minimal light bleed, and the unbalanced speakers. I decided to rma it with ASUS and sent it back.
I just got it back today. The shipping paper shows a new part for a screen (I'm guessing.. 90R-OK061L20000Y). I immediately installed a multi touch and paint app to check the screen only to find an almost identical unresponsive section of the screen (on both it was unresponsive to the lightest of touch only. Heavy touches still registered.)
My question to my fellow Transformer owners is should I RMA again? Maybe switch to the galaxy tab? Hope its software related and wait for a fix? Our just ignore it?
Anyone else have this problem?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
The Transformer is nice especially with dock if all works well, mine does, but if that were me I'd be unloading it and getting a Galaxy 10.1.
I just tested mine with the same paint program. I colored the whole screen with 1 finger and everything seems to be in order. Funny how that program registers 7 finger multitouch but 8 will cause a FC.
Anyway. I would RMA it again. This time stating that the problem wasn't fixed. Maybe put a bunch of post-it notes with arrows all pointing to the spot there it is whacked.

If this really is an issue only with "lightest of touch" I think you would be better off selling the unit. Touch screens often have areas that require more or less contact. The fact that they replaced the screen or digitizer and it does not meet your expectations suggests the settings they are using will not meet your expectations as to the amount of contact required.
Just a quick question, wherever you guys bought your transformer, did anyone buy a warranty through the retailer? Personally I work a BestBuy, so a 1 year with damage warranty was dirt cheap for me, so i bought it, normally I dont get the plans bc I treat my gadgets like angels, but with a 10 inch screen thats only protected by glass I thought I should, especially with all the defects from ASUS going around (although mines working perfect!).
Well as an example when trying to launch an app along the line a hard press is required

Could it be a problem with your fingers? Seems strange you have had problems with 2 lol
Are you saying my fingers is brokeded!?!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
he's saying you touched it wrong
well I would insist on a replacement if the issue is still there. You would of thought they would of tested this before it was returned to you.
I would of thought it would be other hardware other than the screen that is defective and they have simply replaced the incorrect part.
I called asus again and they game another rma. They paid for doing too, that's nice. hoping for a fix though.

[Q] Possible Touchscreen/Multi-Touch issue?

Multitouch Visible Test
With that app, 1-finger touch is alright, no issues.2 Fingers seems alright too. Adding up to 4 fingers seems to be alright and moving them around the screen.
Sometimes with 5 fingers though, they'll all show on the program, and then immediately vanish. If I keep moving my fingers across the screen, they'll pop in and out, but won't actually stay on screen and follow. But this only happens sometimes. Other times, 5-finger input works fine.
My other camera is dead at the moment and I have to run and get batteries for it tomorrow, so I can't actually upload video of what I mean. I was hoping to get some input from other people about how their multi-touch seems to be with that app. Not entirely sure if this is just a rare defect, widespread, or working as intended maybe (not entirely sure if there's anything saying how much multi-touch this screen is; figured it was 10 though)
Some things to try:
- Use 1 finger, drag it all over the screen
- Keep adding fingers 1 by one after dragging them across the screen (add finger, drag it around, add next finger, etc.)
- Don't touch the screen for about 3 seconds, then just have all 5 fingers come in-contact with the screen, and keep them in one spot (on mine most of the time, the points appear then immediately vanish)
Could it just be the app your using?

It could be as simple as compatibility issues with the app...

Called up Google and it doesn't seem to be widespread (or at least the person didn't say it was), and I could get a replacement under warranty. I don't have the funds to put on hold currently so it'll have to wait if I do decide to do it.
Although I wonder if I really should, I mean I highly doubt I'm going to do anything requiring more then 2 fingers on the screen at any point (nor can I really think of anything), and aside from multitouch, everything else seems great. No dead pixels, back doesn't flex, screen is alright quality-wise.
Would be nice if some other people can try out multitouch though just to see if it really might be widespread or not though. The thing is though, it works fine sometimes, and other times it doesn't. Perhaps software might fix it in time, but I don't know. I thought I heard of the Nexus 7 having a similar issue, but I can't recall...

It seems to do the same even with the "Show touches" option enabled in Developer options (tried it on an empty homescreen).
Bump
Anyone? It only takes a minute or two at the most to test this... and the apps available to do so are free and light.
Doing the tests you described never caused anything on my tablet. But if I put my hand down on the tablet flat then put my five fingers on I get your issue. Then wait three seconds and try again and everything is fine till I put my palm back on.
Might be a badly configured palm detection algorithme? Op, do you have fat fingers? Sorry if that sounds rude

Lol, hmm, na I don't think I have fat fingers
How about fruit ninja, does that work properly? It's true that if show touches doesn't work, it's not a good sign. Unless it's a system firmware bug
1 and 2 fingers seems to work great in Fruit Ninja; 3+ randomly works or doesn't work, and when it does work it seems to cut-out at some point and then just show slashes delayed from where my finger is currently
Any idea if its hardware or software related? I have the same issue with my N10 and don't know if I should get a replacement or not.
Got mine today, same issue. Actually, that too bad since everything works fine, and i only got a minimal light bleed. I hope my replacement won't be worst regarding light bleed :/
Same issue on mine. Considering a replacement now with this and wakeup lag + battery issue (indicator not updating % at all!?)
Don't know if I wasn't lucky or just poor QA.
I'm pretty sure it is a software thing because when the problem occurs and I tab on the multitasking button twice (so it shows the multitasking menu and switches back to the app) the touchscreen acts normal again until I put more than three fingers on screen.
But if its a software problem, shouldn't it happen to on every N10 running the same Android version?
I have the same issue. If I slowly add one touch at a time, it usually works. But if I touch down 3+ fingers at once it gets very confused and bounces between zero and N touches. I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first generation) and multitouch seems to work much better on it than the Nexus10. However, I did notice that the Nexus10 is better at distinguishing 2 very close touches than the GTab. On the Nexus10 I can have my fingers as close as 1/2 inch or so before the touches merge. On the GTab it is more like 3/4".
Hmm, kind of interesting to see that others are also having a similar issue.
I noticed that when I tried a custom ROM (latest Kernel sources + 4.2.1), the multitouch seemed to work, slightly better (the issue still occurs, just maybe not as much). Not too sure if it was placebo or what though.
I called the support and will replace mine with a new one. It might be just a software issue thats solved with an update but I don't want to risk it.
just got my replacement today, same issue (and also worst light bleed ). Third replacement on this way...

Exchanging the Nexus 7 Twice?

Hey all,
I bought the Nexus 7 from Best Buy on release day. The first one I got had banding issues (so I thought) but it turns out where I was seeing it in the settings is common and has to do with the background used from what I found out after I exchanged it. The one I got now has bad backlight bleed and the screen seems blurry. Not sure what's up with that.
My question is, will Best Buy care if I go exchange the device again? I'd rather not be stuck with an actual defective one. Thanks!

I'm about to return mine and wait until they get more in stock, the screen on my Nexus 7 32GB is sometimes not recognizing my touches , sometimes have to press really hard on the screen just for it to recognize, and even then it isn't 100% accurate.
Something is off with the touch sensitivity tuning. I remember reading that 4.3 brought increased sensitivity to the N4, maybe the N7 is starting out extra sensitive. I've noticed it most with the default keyboard. It sometimes double types a single character. What's happening is that it recognizes my finger before I actually hit the glass, and then again when I hit it. But this should be fixable with an update.
I wish android would allow touch sensitivity user customization, something like on Nokia's Lumia WP8 phones.

I'm unsure about the touchscreen issues. That typically results from bad connections or somewhere. Have you tried Yet Another multi touch App?
It has 2 functions, one tests inputs the other is like a paint. I recommend trying to color the entire screen. This will tell you if you have any dead spots.
If your touchscreen isn't working well I highly recommend you swap it out. What good is a tablet if the problem gets worse?

My touch screen is working perfectly!!! After to tech support.

Hi, I want to share my experience with a Nexus 7 2013 which bought to me a friend in USA (I'm from Spain).
It is made in China, June, and it has every touch problem described here: maps rotate, multi-touch with only 2 fingers, Swype keyboard problem (the draw was continuously cut off), the screen didn't recognize my finger, and sometimes ghost pulsations.
Well, I sent the tablet to the tech support and today is back.
The report says:
Problem: Touch Screen Function Error
Replaced part: LCD + Front + GPS module
Note the Gps module replaced which I didn't referred.
Now everything is ok and screen works without problems. And all of this with the J compilation.
Clearly, my experience indicates that the Nexus problem is a hardware problem, and Asus knows perfectly the problem.
Cheers.

What I don't understand is if that was the case there would be a lot of perfect ones out there. They should call for a recall if you have a certain date of the bad batches. This is how it should be done. If you bought it from Best Buy then best buy should be getting good batches for exchange. With reciepts still. I am over my 15 days now. 2nd of all I just don't believe that this is hardware. I had a perfect screen for 15 days then this update destroyed it. HMMMMMMM doesn't make sence. It is software issues thats going on.
I think what Asus is doing is recieving your Nexus 7 and istalling the proper drivers for the screen it has in it. The next update that comes out will destroy it again and again till you get tired of this crap.

I'm happy they fixed your touch screen issue, I'm thinking about having my n7 sent to be repaired too because ts10 helped a lot but it still doesn't feel 100% fixed.
Does your nexus feel solid and one piece like it did out of the box? I'm worried about having the screen feel like it could detach if they replace it.
I would like to see people start putting pictures of the paper work for this problem. Meaning the paper they send back with your tablet saying it is a defective screen or digitizer. Then we need to do something to get a replacement. Not sending it off. Exchanges at retail stores.
I have now the Q compilation with root and unlocked, and the touch screen is ok still. I don't see anything different to the original product (when I opened the box), but I think they exchange the screen and GPS, as they told me.

Dude, read the description! It is NOT test app. It is showing (simulates) bad touch so you can compare it with your device.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Please show me the sentence which is saying that. I am reading this desciption totaly different.

I knew it. I found something out last night. Mine works perfect if its on a hard surface like a wooden table. If I put it on my couch or lay it on any cloth type material it has dead spots on typing. Mine is in a slimline Moko case. This is tested without holding it and unplugged. Touching the screen with one finger and hand only.Type real fast on each letter and they drop out touches.Like I said it works perfect now.

Take your Nexus 7 out of the case and lay it on a nice wooden hard surface and retest the screen. Mine works perfect on hard surfaces only.im thinking it could be the digitizer flexing or the wireless charging coils causing the problems.
The previous video was recorded before I sent the tablet. As it is shown it worked in a terrible way. Now is something subtle, because it only fails sometimes and mainly on hard surfaces.
It is strange, before to tech support it failed each second. Now, I can be swyping several minutes and it doesn't fail, and in other moment it fails 1 out of 10 words.
I will try to update to R compilation (I have the Q) and I will tell you.

Possible ways to tell if you are buying from a newer batch.

Like many I have had many problems with getting a Nexus 7 2013 that is defect free. I bought my first one back in the middle of September which was a 16GB. It had massive light bleed and very noticeable issues with the touch screen especially when typing. I exchanged it a few days later for another 16GB which had no light bleed but also developed issues with the touch screen while typing. I have read about all the possible fixes and software variants which messes with the touch screen but today decided that I will try exchanging one more time. This time I decided to go for a 32GB since it was all Best Buy had left.
Anyways I noticed some differences in the packaging and initial setup of the tablet and I thought maybe these would either be:
A) A sign that these tablets are a newer production run
or
B) Differences between the 16GB and 32GB
The first thing I noticed is that instead of one sticker holding the lid on the box, there are now two, staggered, one on each side of the box. Also these stickers have Asus engraved on them, my 16GB didn't have that, at least not that I noticed. The second thing I noticed is that the plastic wrap around the tablet itself had arrows pointing towards the power and volume buttons with icons for each. And lastly, the tablet did not do a mandatory update upon setup. It was already on software version JSS15N.
Anyways, so far after updating to the latest JSS15R, everything seems good. Light bleed is almost non existent and no problems to be had with the touch screen.
If you are like me and don't think you should have to live with defects, or should be forced to flash things to the boot loader using trial and error to get the tablet working like it should, then I suggest looking for these things. You can check to see if there are two stickers without breaking open any packaging, just removing the sleeve.
Maybe if people notice other differences we can compile the information here and people can use it to get a properly functioning tablet.
If this is posted somewhere already, please spare me the search lecture, I tried.
If you are someone who bought a launch tablet and believe it works perfectly and feel that everyone is being too picky, spare me that as well.
Let's help everyone get what they paid for!
What is the production date on the issue-free device that you got? I saw tens of N7 boxes in stores here in Poland and they've been all from June production batch. I tested maybe five in three different stores all of them were having touchscreen issues. I test in maps by trying pinch to zoom and two finger rotation gestures or simply by placing two fingers on the screen on the same vertical axis. The ones that I was able to test failed all three tests.

Well I feel silly I didn't even know they put the date. Anyways it says 2013.08
I'm curious if anyone owns a September batch, along side their experiences with them.
are there even any out?
I got 3 N7 with these two stickers and all had touch issues. I think the plastic around the N7 had symbols instead of arrows. Batch date were 07.
Hey, I'm thinking about getting the cellular version one.
Where can I locate the production date? is it on the box? of on the device itself ?
thanks :good:
Hope they can fix these issues with a software update.
I'm also interested in buying one if I can get some sort of tip it would help. It all seems so random so far though.

It's on the side of the box. There's a sticker that also has a serial numer printed on it.
I'm going to buy one, they arrive at portugal this week (day 3 to be precise) but i will not buy one just yet. i'll wait a little longer for more informations on the problems and solutions and hopping they start releasing almost completely bug free batch. I think this touchscreen problem is kind of a deal breaker for what i have been reading. Lets see if i can hold a little longer without a nexus 7 since i sold my 2012 to buy this one, ahah.
Production dated 2013 08 here and no problems at all.

You all still have the low volume hissing right? I got 32gb 08 model and that's the only issue I have.
Also, can someone check if you get a sort of rattling sound when playing the stock alarm sound cesium on higher volumes. Feels like the speakers are rattling when playing it, but don't notice that on other sounds.

I have a 7/13, (32gb) that doesn't seem to have any problems.
I've got a 16GB with 09/2013 batch date and haven't found any problems yet.
is there a low volume static/hiss for people who own a September batch?
I have a 07/13 (32gb) that doesn't seem to have any problems.
I too have a 07/2013 32gb version with no issues.
Loving it.
