I unlocked my bootloader and then went to:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/home/
At the lower right under SERVICE & REPAIR
Click on :Submit for Repair
Entered my IEMI and got an err code of 100-99.
I did the same with my wife's 'M (stock) and was able to browse the whole trouble-shooting gamut.
So even though the unlock is unofficial the Droid is able phone home about it.
I wasn't sure. Anyone want to confirm this?
edit
I new it voided the Warranty , just did not think it would be registered remotely .
Yea I just checked mine n it said out of warranty...which its not even two months old... I may just give support a call sometime and play dumb asking the why...

Unlikely. Don't you think the privacy notification agreement, that you must click, can read your bootloader code?
Edit I see your point but both can be monitored.
I see that... as it has the root checker in the stock recovery... I know once upon a soak in my d4 days they needed my imei number to send another push after that every post he (matt the forum manager) pretty much knew I was rooted... never said it but kept asking if I was rooted...

no, it is a root checker.
I called them shortly after I got my device (and rooting it, of course) - and they asked for my IEMI, and after I gave it to them, they said that the phone was rooted.

Rooted and unlocked here but was able to log in and start the warranty process (I had to cancel out as I do not have an issue). Note: I pay the $6 or $7/month for warranty coverage through Verizon.

You are of course welcome to your opinion, but I've made out very well with such coverage over the years. I always buy used phones (coverage follows phone number and thus transfers) and the fees are a business expense and tax deductible.

glad they have worked out for you... but my understanding is that you pay $7/month, and if, for example, your phone is smashed/stolen, you'll get a replacement (most likely a refurb) for free. however, there is a $100 deductible.
so, let's just say, for example, that 12 months into your contract, you lose your phone and order a replacement. at this point, you would have spent $184 ($100 deductible + $7/month x 12).
comparatively, you could get a used one on ebay for about the same price (motorola still honors the warranty).
keep in mind that you'll be eligible to get a new phone at the discounted rate 22 months into a contract.
so, for me, given that losing/damaging a phone is a rarity, the numbers just to do not make sense (now watch me jinx myself and lose/damage my phone this weekend while at the beach).
essentially, all you are doing is taking a bet, and it's a losing bet in the long run....

When it's a legit business expense it's not a big deal. $7/month compared to what it costs me to operate a small business every month is nothing. Payroll and rent are the big ones.

no disagreement on the 2-year contract scam - but that's the price we pay for discounted devices. hence the new programs currently being offered...

Hey guys,
I'm new to the website, new to android but loving it so far.
I would really appreciate any opinions here. My girlfriend and I both bought our phones about a month ago. Mine has the tmobile extended warrenty (which is not something I would usually get, but it's a new phone plan and I can cancel so I said yes for now) hers does not. Well of course (I saw it coming) she dropped her phone and has a terrible crack down the screen.
I was wondering if anyone has an opinions on what I should do
Are there any good screen replacement sites anyone has tried that are trust worthy? Or would a better option be purchasing the screen myself and trying to install it (not sure how difficult something like this would be but wouldn't mind the challenge if it is a viable option)
Last thing I was thinking was just filing a lost phone claim for my phone and paying the deductible which is $130 dollars.
Anyway any help would be awesome, thanks.

I used to work for HTC based here in Houston, TX.
We repaired and refurbished all HTC phones for ATT, Tmo and so on and so forth.
It's not easily done at home. Especially with phones that had touch screens.
Torque screwdrivers to get the right tightness, air compressors to clear dust from the screen and other tools needed to separate parts of the phone without damaging them.
In my opinion, and it's not a professional one, claim the lost and pay the 130.
It's easier than going through all the trouble.
And from the only site I came across, they sold digitizers/lcd for 99.99 I believe.
I don't remember the site though. I've already deleted the bookmark.
Hope this helps.
But if you claim a lost phone can't they find out that you're lying because they can see that your sim is still in that phone?

You'd have to call Tmo and freeze your SIM, which means you'd need a new one.
You can talk yourself out of having to pay for a new sim card. (Trust me.)
They can even make a note of it and you can pick it up at a Tmo corporate retail store.
But you would have to take the new phone for yourself and the old one for your girl.
Just better played that way.

and what if they freeze it based of the IMEI which isn't on your sim... then you would pay 130 for nothing...
You would need to really lose your phone. Asurion isn't dumb and they will prosecute for fraud. Just an fyi if you do start using the same phone again that was lost its gonna be bad.

They can't freeze a phone, it doesn't belong to them. The SIM is a different story.
You're suggesting something that doesn't make sense.
But anyway. An opinion was asked for and I gave it.

Hey I was reading online that if Verizon suspects that you're using wireless tether that they can cancel your contract. Also, I read in the TOS that if you "alter your device" that it's also grounds for termination. Does that mean that if you've rooted your Droid PERIOD and they find out about it they can cancel your contract?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
yep. just sbf before you go to a verizon store or have to send it in. then they cant find out sense its out of the box condition
Wow. That's messed up. Before today I just thought they could refuse my warranty. I didn't realize they could cancel my contract altogether. I can understand them gettin pissy about Wireless Tether since that's technically rippimg them off, but JUST rooting the phone? Due to the new electronic copyright law it's my legal RIGHT to be able to root it. Why do you think they see fit to cancel your contract just bc you've got full power over your device?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
thats freakin bull****. if verizon cancels my contract because i have a cool theme and full control im going to court and making them give me free service forever. but on a more serious note, that is definitely not the case unless verizon somehow found a loophole in the law.
Well, the "loophole" is their TOS. Lol. Anyway, I wish I could find the link to tha again so I could show you guys the excerpt from the TOS. Does anyone have a link to that?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I don't know how likely it would be for them to cancel a contract since you would be walking away with a phone that retails for 569.99 and they would be losing out on about $100 per month which is probably somewhere around 60 to 70% profit.
Beamed from my robot X using the XDA app
Since Verizon has ended New every 2, this tells me they don't need to be "competitive" (Thank you iphone). I've had great discussions in the past about when Verizon gets the iphone that either their prices will go up or they'll change something against the consumer. Ending New every 2 is probably one of them and threatening to cancel on the basis of TOS infringement is another.

Dude, every wireless carrier has the same conditions spelled out one way or another; Verizon is not special in this regard.
Good points... does it say anything about if the device has to be activated at the time? If I rooted a phone in the past but have not with my new ones. If Verizon finds out could they still cancel my plan or no because I signed a new one at the time of upgrade? Just wanted to see everyones views.

I cant imagine Verizon cancelling anyones contract for rooting. They make alot of money on the phone plans not really the phones. Its easier to get out of a marriage then a phone contract without penalties
crap i was just going to root my dx
contract canceled?
I personally find this he hard to believe. I go to my verizon store quite often And everyone that works there knows my phone is rooted. I Always have to show off my new rom and my new theme. Last week I had to take my phone in because it would not charge And the service guy had to check out my phone ended up it was the charger. He was impressed with the a new Liberty Rom. He was even thinking about rooting his phones to do this. Not one employee in the store said anything about cancelling my contract.

I wouldn't worry about that unless your downloading hordes of data. If you bought the phone on the plan deal then Verizon looses if you cancel your contract early because the Droid X is/was a $600 smart phone. They wouldnt cancel anything unless you were costing them money. Lawyers just put that mumbo jumbo in so they give the company options to terminate bad customers.
Yep....they are gonna cancel your contact and tell you to keep all the potential money they could have made off of you over the years....all because you rooted your phone....lol.

I doubt they would cancel anyone's contract over root. You would have to let them keep your phone for something, otherwise just ask for it back and un-root. They wouldn't be able to prove anything.
What would be bad about them canceling a contract over a root?

The problem you will have is you will not be able to put it in service with Verizon thus you can't test phone calls or mms. There maybe more things but that's the main thing... I don't see any issues for developing since you have us users to test that for you. I know @bigxie is a developer of Apex and he doesn't have a Verizon account aand his roms are awesome..

Don't buy bad esn phones and support thieves.
It's not always theives, if your let your account lapse with Sprint or Verizon they will eventually blacklist your ESN. I've got one of those myself from a friend.
Now I guess you could say failing to pay your bill is stealing, in a sense, but I mean that the device wasn't stolen.
In a way it was. A Droid x costs the store it was bought from almost 600 dollars. They sell it for 150. You stop paying your bill within a set amount of time, the store gets a charge back from VZW for the commission it was paid to discount the phone below cost...

Alright so I got my phone in December and somehow found a way to completely Brick it. So in between reviving my phone back to life (It's fully functional now), I called Google to send me a replacement and they issued me a RMA. But as soon as I un-bricked my phone I called them back and told them to cancel the RMA I don't need replacement device anymore.
So apparently that didn't happen and I just received Google Play order email suggesting my Replacement device has been shipped.
Now here is my issue, I am from Canada so obviously there Tax and shipping charge involved. Although (When comparing with my old Google play order) this time the only charge I see is the full retail amount of the Phone and there is no shipping and tax involved. There is going a charge of $359 on my CC nevertheless.
So here is my question. If I accept the phone from UPS will the Taxes and shipping come back? or Not?
Any feedback on the matter will be highly appreciated. Good day Folks. Long Live Nexus.
If it works you didn't brick it.. If you don't need the RMA anymore just refuse the package and have them send it back.

I've been meaning to dig into this and today I did.
The cost is 85 bucks for two years and you have 30 days from the date of purchase to add the coverage.
Covers everything but lost or stolen phone with a deductible of $39.00
This is cheaper than AT&T's insurance and the deductible is attractive vs their $200.00
to get it log on to motorola's website with your google ID
then go to my stuff
you'll see your phone listed and the option to add the coverage.
Seems like a no brainer to me.
I have no idea if you folks with unlocked bootloaders can get this or not.

You will have to look at terms and conditions to see if it's transferable.
Sounds nice, but I got my phone through work.
So I could just get a new phone after a year. I'm going to ask next if I can just upgrade early and pay the upgrade fee myself. I'm hoping that I can and just be able to get a new phone faster.

Ouch. You're paying for Edge?
Also re Nexus on Verizon: never again
Ironically I dropped my Moto X on saturday and cracked the screen. I called the support number and told the CSR I have Accidental Damage Warranty. He asked my the IMEI number of the phone and verified my information for shipping etc.
I was then told about my choices regarding advanced replacement or regular. I chose advanced. 5-6 minutes after I got off the phone I got the RMA emails from fedex and a new code to remake the phone on motomaker.
I was never asked to pay the $39 deductible.
I had to pay up front for the phone but I expected that.
I'm sure the CSR processed this all wrong. I wonder if, when Motorola gets my phone back and they see it's damaged, I'll have a problem getting the advanced payment refunded.
I clearly stated twice that I have warranty coverage. Things could be interesting in a couple of days when Motorola gets my old phone.
I forgot to check out before and now it won't let me add it anymore, I'm assuming it's because I'm a day past 30 days. On the phone with India now.

Well "John" from India just told me that even though I m past the 30 days I will still be able to add it. He said someone from Moto Maker support will call me back within 4 hours and they will take the order for me. Good news, but I must say I'm skeptical. We'll see if anyone actually calls back.

Their record for calling back isn't exactly stellar I'm afraid.
My new phone is out for delivery. I'll update this thread with info regarding the refunded advance payment when I get it.

Yeah I'm aware. I pressed him to just let me hold for the next representative but he said I couldn't. We shall see what happens.
