Hey I was reading online that if Verizon suspects that you're using wireless tether that they can cancel your contract. Also, I read in the TOS that if you "alter your device" that it's also grounds for termination. Does that mean that if you've rooted your Droid PERIOD and they find out about it they can cancel your contract?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
yep. just sbf before you go to a verizon store or have to send it in. then they cant find out sense its out of the box condition
Wow. That's messed up. Before today I just thought they could refuse my warranty. I didn't realize they could cancel my contract altogether. I can understand them gettin pissy about Wireless Tether since that's technically rippimg them off, but JUST rooting the phone? Due to the new electronic copyright law it's my legal RIGHT to be able to root it. Why do you think they see fit to cancel your contract just bc you've got full power over your device?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
thats freakin bull****. if verizon cancels my contract because i have a cool theme and full control im going to court and making them give me free service forever. but on a more serious note, that is definitely not the case unless verizon somehow found a loophole in the law.
Well, the "loophole" is their TOS. Lol. Anyway, I wish I could find the link to tha again so I could show you guys the excerpt from the TOS. Does anyone have a link to that?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I don't know how likely it would be for them to cancel a contract since you would be walking away with a phone that retails for 569.99 and they would be losing out on about $100 per month which is probably somewhere around 60 to 70% profit.
Beamed from my robot X using the XDA app
Since Verizon has ended New every 2, this tells me they don't need to be "competitive" (Thank you iphone). I've had great discussions in the past about when Verizon gets the iphone that either their prices will go up or they'll change something against the consumer. Ending New every 2 is probably one of them and threatening to cancel on the basis of TOS infringement is another.

Dude, every wireless carrier has the same conditions spelled out one way or another; Verizon is not special in this regard.
Good points... does it say anything about if the device has to be activated at the time? If I rooted a phone in the past but have not with my new ones. If Verizon finds out could they still cancel my plan or no because I signed a new one at the time of upgrade? Just wanted to see everyones views.

I cant imagine Verizon cancelling anyones contract for rooting. They make alot of money on the phone plans not really the phones. Its easier to get out of a marriage then a phone contract without penalties
crap i was just going to root my dx
contract canceled?
I personally find this he hard to believe. I go to my verizon store quite often And everyone that works there knows my phone is rooted. I Always have to show off my new rom and my new theme. Last week I had to take my phone in because it would not charge And the service guy had to check out my phone ended up it was the charger. He was impressed with the a new Liberty Rom. He was even thinking about rooting his phones to do this. Not one employee in the store said anything about cancelling my contract.

I wouldn't worry about that unless your downloading hordes of data. If you bought the phone on the plan deal then Verizon looses if you cancel your contract early because the Droid X is/was a $600 smart phone. They wouldnt cancel anything unless you were costing them money. Lawyers just put that mumbo jumbo in so they give the company options to terminate bad customers.
Yep....they are gonna cancel your contact and tell you to keep all the potential money they could have made off of you over the years....all because you rooted your phone....lol.

Man its mostly hot air n scare tactics while I was upgrading from my droid eris at the store I was taking to a rep and I asked if he rooted his and he told me yeah cuz he had a newer phone but used his eris as his internet at home
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I doubt they would cancel anyone's contract over root. You would have to let them keep your phone for something, otherwise just ask for it back and un-root. They wouldn't be able to prove anything.
What would be bad about them canceling a contract over a root?
You get at walk way from an etf...

When you send ur phone in for replacing it goes to someone who does a hard reset anyway so Verizon really doesn't know now if something goes wrong and you take it to the store most likely they'll chalk it up with rooting.... just sbf before sending it back that being said my step dad had one and it kept booting to cwm everytime and not booting past it.. took it to the store and they sent him a replacement i sbf'd the old one and sent it on its way back

I already posted this in another thread, but how do I safely sbf? I've UNINSTALLED (not renamed) several bloatware apps and I wanna get them back and rename them instead. How do I do that? SAFELY. I don't wanna brick my X.

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

Where have you heard this? This is the first I have heard of it and through multiple google searches it seems that all link to this thread or copies of it. Nothing from any reputable source. Also after speaking with a Verizon rep they thought it was funny and didn't hear about it either.
EDIT: I saw the post by P3droid I still don't buy it. This garbage has been circling the internet for over a year. Not true then, not true now. Also if you read the article HTC and other carriers are thinking about this as well and HTC is already including encrypted bootloaders so point fingers everywhere. Still though Verizon nor any other carrier are going to do anything. Think about it... They are offering the upgrade on Zoom tablets even if you are rooted... That post by P3Droid is simply fear mongering.

Agreed. Verizon and other carriers could careless about rooted phones. It's users that tether crazy data. I'm rooted and have no desire to tether, never have and probably never will.

Verizon has already baked tether detection into Gingerbread.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Is this some kind of April fools? First of all, we should be allowed to use our data allotment however we see fit, the tether plan is nothing more than a money grab. I can connect my computer, and whatever else, and if I run out of data, verizon gets more money that month, since I have to buy more. Preventing us from tethering for free is ridiculous. And frankly, ATT did it for the iphone, but I actually think that's because they have a pathetic network, and they had to find some way to lighten the load. Anyway, this better not be true. Or I'm starting my own wireless company, and it will be FOR the people. While still making plenty of money not having to nickel and dime anybody. That is all.

As a new root user, and a complete N00B. I first would like to say. Thank you! To all the dev teams out there. You guys have made my experience with my amazing Droid X a complete blast. I just love flashing the Liberty 1.5 ROM to all my fellow co-workers that are being strapped by Apple. I for one, being a tech, have heard a lot of backroom conversations. I know these big corporate entities are looking at this forum and asking why college kids can do these amazing things with their devices, but we as mature, hardworking, overpaid corporate big shots can not figure this **** out. It's absolutely hilarious to me. It's a classic Slippery Slope. They can't figure it out, they "Leak" it out source somehow. The underground dev teams take it and make it great, then these corporate beasts take it back all shinny and new, and then throw the developers into the fire. Screaming "Off with their Heads"! "They've stolen from us"! Last I checked we still live in a country, that is if you're reading this from the USA, that still stands for FREEDOM! SDICKER89 said it best from the DEV forum:
"Should I give in, and be unhappy with my phone as stock 2.2 froyo with tons of bloatware that ill never use and slows down my phone every day? Should i deal with the horribly coded motoblur that slows down my phone more than the bloatware? Maybe i should just go back to a standard style phone and use Boost mobile or something cheap and use use my droid x that I PAID FOR, off network as a multimedia device. That way, "the man" can't tell me what i can and can't do. What is everyone else thinking on this subject? "

This is MY phone! I worked for the money to buy it! I'm the one trying to figure out why I was having to charge my battery all the time. I'm the one that was wondering why my phone wasn't as amazing as the IPhone, when their specs are so close to each other. It's a damn shame! From the brilliant mind of Bill Hicks (R.I.P) "Go back to bed America"! "You're Free to do as we Tell you"! (Youtube: Bill Hicks - Go back to bed America)
To all of you that serve as a DEV team member - from the amateur to the most experienced! "Hats off to you" !

Did I not just break it by rooting and ROMing? That's the way I understand it. Maybe I don't fully understand what's going on here.
When I signed up with my Android I signed up for $30 unlimited data and if they are changing the rules for whatever reason they are breaking the contract. In my opinion I should not pay an ETF for something they have caused... some will argue I rooted/tethered but unlimited is unlimited.
You fail to read the fine print just like credit cards. The carrier can change your plan as they like but must offer you options, ie. Grandfather you until your next upgrade or allow you to leave without a penalty. VZW has done nothing illegal, and like said before, if you rooted the phone you broke the agreement with VZW and have no legs to stand on in a court of law and they can do as they please with your data allotment.

Rooting/Jailbreaking is actually legal. Apple already tried to do this for the exact same reasons and failed in court.
This is not about the ability to root/modify. They could care less. What they are annoyed about is how people use root. they dont want their service to be stolen.
If verizon allowed the use of "free" tethering with apps such as wireless tether and barnacle, and bumped up the price of data a little (because data is data, whether you are tethering or on youtube) then not only would the community and myself be happy without the whole data throttling thing because of tethering, but the carrier/moto would also be ecstatic because they get a lot of positive PR from one of the most influential parts of their phone community.

And this is clearly unfair for those rooted users who don't abuse their power. I pay for an unlimited plan and yet 95% of the time my phone is connected to WiFi.
This is all hearsay until we have cases of people having their contracts cancelled or whatnot.
Also you have to realize the point of this whole thing. Its not if you root. Vzw is against you tethering without paying for it. Its a service they offer for money. Its not a free service, so don't expect to get it for free without vzw doing something about it. Just because your phone is capable of it, doesn't mean you get it for free!!!! That's like saying, "my phone is capable of phone calls... I should get them for free!!!"
No you shouldn't. You should pay for it just like everyone else. Just like you should pay to have the tethering service.

What are your reasons for running on verizon? You can always use the 00001 prl, which will let you talk/text/3g on verizon. As long as you dont use it a whole lot (about 50% per month) you shouldnt get caught from sprint.

You actually bought a phone from verizon, you own both phones, chances of they getting you is 1 in one million.
People come out with the dogs not knowing exactly the rules of stealing/cloning/swapping.
If you swap esn/meid your phone become the donors phone bottom line that's what they will see.
if you wanna know how to do it, pm. I dont charge a penny, to whoever want to learn. this applys to
most phones.
If you search around you will see a tons of guides/how to on how to flash to cricket/metropcs/virgin and etc...
anyway people are using one's phone carrier on another.
Iphone or any gsm phone, they are exclusive for specific carriers. though people jailbreak or unlock to use
in another carrier.
they been doing this since mmmmm since mmmm?? well a very long time ...lol
I mean knowledge ahead, doing or not is totally up to you.
I can guarantee voice/text will work, now regarding data maybe, I've seem people with data and other not or struggling with 1x.

everybody know that pulling the trigger can kill, however most people are not willing to do so. You decide your will.
Thanks for the helpful info, but i am going to flash my phone over to verizon anyway. I already bought the donor phone and paid for the month of service so there's no turning back now I'm having a few issues so so help would be excellent from the poster above. Only certain people are allowed to cancel, they have predetermined who that is. Its not a change in most people's contract as the terms read that they are allowed to limit, suspend or cancel service while roaming. Also if you don't actually use data roaming and haven't before then it wouldn't be a "materially adverse" change. This thread is stupid if you are allowed to cancel you will get a notice, all this thread is doing is creating useless calls for T-Mobile lengthing wait times all because your a baby and can't take responsibility for your crap like a grown up. Pull your head out of your ass, your mad because I said people should be grown ups and take responsibility. Most people will tell you T-Mobile was way better back in the day especially customer service, crap like this is why they are scripted now and why they outsource so much, because the outsourcers just read and do as they're told. These threads are stupid because customer care even retention has had the ability to waive an ETF taken away a long time ago. So the people that call in waste there time and CS's time because unless outlined for them already they can't waive it. If you want to talk **** go for it don't bother me, the internet gives you confidence you wouldn't otherwise say in person little man.

I unlocked my bootloader and then went to:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/home/
At the lower right under SERVICE & REPAIR
Click on :Submit for Repair
Entered my IEMI and got an err code of 100-99.
I did the same with my wife's 'M (stock) and was able to browse the whole trouble-shooting gamut.
So even though the unlock is unofficial the Droid is able phone home about it.
I wasn't sure. Anyone want to confirm this?
edit
I new it voided the Warranty , just did not think it would be registered remotely .
Yea I just checked mine n it said out of warranty...which its not even two months old... I may just give support a call sometime and play dumb asking the why...

Unlikely. Don't you think the privacy notification agreement, that you must click, can read your bootloader code?
Edit I see your point but both can be monitored.
I see that... as it has the root checker in the stock recovery... I know once upon a soak in my d4 days they needed my imei number to send another push after that every post he (matt the forum manager) pretty much knew I was rooted... never said it but kept asking if I was rooted...

no, it is a root checker.
I called them shortly after I got my device (and rooting it, of course) - and they asked for my IEMI, and after I gave it to them, they said that the phone was rooted.

Rooted and unlocked here but was able to log in and start the warranty process (I had to cancel out as I do not have an issue). Note: I pay the $6 or $7/month for warranty coverage through Verizon.

You are of course welcome to your opinion, but I've made out very well with such coverage over the years. I always buy used phones (coverage follows phone number and thus transfers) and the fees are a business expense and tax deductible.

glad they have worked out for you... but my understanding is that you pay $7/month, and if, for example, your phone is smashed/stolen, you'll get a replacement (most likely a refurb) for free. however, there is a $100 deductible.
so, let's just say, for example, that 12 months into your contract, you lose your phone and order a replacement. at this point, you would have spent $184 ($100 deductible + $7/month x 12).
comparatively, you could get a used one on ebay for about the same price (motorola still honors the warranty).
keep in mind that you'll be eligible to get a new phone at the discounted rate 22 months into a contract.
so, for me, given that losing/damaging a phone is a rarity, the numbers just to do not make sense (now watch me jinx myself and lose/damage my phone this weekend while at the beach).
essentially, all you are doing is taking a bet, and it's a losing bet in the long run....

I've never paid a deductible. It's been a while since I have needed the coverage, but I remember getting a brand new Droid 3 after my Droid 2 bricked.

To me, that's the scam; the 2-year contract. I haven't been under contract with Verizon in years.

I truly hope not! But you also bring up a good point as I'm on and off my boat very frequently and dropping it in the water and/or me falling in (that's happened a few times) justifies the insurance for me.

When it's a legit business expense it's not a big deal. $7/month compared to what it costs me to operate a small business every month is nothing. Payroll and rent are the big ones.
Have a good time at the beach!

no disagreement on the 2-year contract scam - but that's the price we pay for discounted devices. hence the new programs currently being offered...
I have the warranty/insurance from Verizon as well... for simple issues I don't have to pay just mail my phone in when the replacement gets here... but if its an issue with say water damage, broken screen broken USB port stuff of that nature its a $100 deductible...

right. for simple issues, they'll send you a free replacement even if you don't have the insurance.
Back on topic... I sent my sisters RAZR HD in that was at one point rooted to get service. They didnt seem to care.
So I bought the hype without reading more here first. Lesson Learned. Only my second android phone, the first being the SG3.
I contacted ATT who sends me to MOTO, who sends me back to ATT.
Finally called the store directly, and am Hoping the second customization comes before the end of 14 day period so I don't have to pay the restocking fee.
Thankfully I have kept everything, the original card, receipt from the store, invoice from MOTO saying it was on its way, the tracking information, the tracking information from when I sent it back for the second customization.
I will keep you guys updated but either way, ATT and MOTO need to talk to each other cause spending 3 hours on the phone / "live" web chat doesn't cut it as customer service.
why are you returning it?
^^wondering the same^^

I was able to exchange my Moto X through Motorola no problem (didn't like the white front once I saw it in person) I didn't get bounced around. I chatted in through the Moto maker website. They told me I would get a call in 24 hours. Never got a call but got the slew of emails to order my new one, rma info and FedEx label. I seriously only had that easy of a time exchanging Google play devices. My replacement is acting wonky. I lost 7% battery in less than 45 minutes of mostly idle time. Today he tried to tell me to go to at&t and I told him he was wrong. They only accept non custom ones at AT&T. So he did the same thing they did they first time. Escalated it and said I'd hear from them in 24-48 hours. Hopefully the same deal happens where I don't get a call just the emails.

I was returning it because I wasn't sure if I was going to be patient enough for root and an unlocked bootloader.
With Root seeming like it is going to happen by the weekend. I'm really considering keeping it but a locked bootloader might still end up being a deal breaker for me. The other reason is that I'm willing to wait until the holidays for the price to drop since my financial situation has changed.

I started it as a warning about motorola's poor customer service and the trouble you'd have to go to return a moto x with ATT.
I still might have to return it, which is why I kept every single receipt, and I plan on posting an update should I go down that road.
I also did a swap because I didn't like the white front. I had no problem at all with customer service. Letting me swap it out for a different color because of my mistake is way better then I expected.

I believe you posted in the Moto forums, and the forum manager already replied that it wasn't an issue with Moto customer service. The issue was there was an untrained AT&T local store (big surprise). If you buy the phone (or MotoMaker voucher) from an AT&T store, you are able to return your phone to that local store.
The process works, unfortunately you just hit a local store that didn't follow it.
As for the bootloader thing - it was announced at launch that dev edition phones would be coming out for some networks and AT&T and Verizon would not have unlockable bootloaders.
