When I came home to canada, I got a bell sim card (as I have a bell plan, previously with a CDMA phone). When I started the phone, all I was getting was voice, and I was very dissapointed.
I decided to see if Rogers or Tellus would work (as somebody told me they use 1900 more than 850), and when the rogers guy tried his sim, it was the same story. THEN he figured out that for this phone, you have to manually enter the APN info for the canadian carrier. He tried it on my phone, and I started picking up EDGE.
I immediately called bell tech support for the same info, and they referred me to the website. I entered the bell APN info in the settings menu and I now have HSPA on bell in Canada on my european i9000! Spread the word!

Yeah but on the countryside 850 is the main frequency as far as i know..
Even in cities it isn't everywhere

It works for me in every city around the golden horse-shoe (Toronto, Hamilton, St. Catharines, etc), even in rather rural places like Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie. I haven't tried it in Waterloo (where I go to school yet), but that is a big technology town so I'm sure it will work. Coverage in these areas is enough for me I'm just trying to shut down the "this phone will not work with bell canada's 3g network, it's been tested by multiple people" I've heard going around.
Well my euro did not get 3g around Niagara falls and here in th usa did not get 3g on most of the Boston nh i93 corridor which uses 850 mhz

There are two specific Kiwi issues I would like to discuss.
Does anybody know where to obtain a stock ROM for the I9000 from Telecom New Zealand? I believe there is only Eclair, but would like to be proven wrong. I may require this in case of any warrany issues and to reset before upgrading to Gingerbread (at least I am led to believe this).
Which modem are you using (again Telecom NZ) on your custom ROMs? I have tried a few and I am currently using JL2. I had to flash this separately while using Darky's ROM 9.3, which worked fine in some parts of town but not at all in others (I presume it could not handle the 850 band).

I believe JL2 is the correct modem to use. Do you have a Telecom SGS as the Vodafone one obviously does not support the 850mhz band that Telecom requires. It is possible that the rom/modem combo you are using disables the 850mhz band which would explain why some parts of town aren't working. I'm pretty sure there is a way to enable it if your hardware supports.
As for the thing about the stock rom, I think maybe you should ask people on the Geekzone forums - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=62267&page_no=323

I have the telecom froyo release even though it has not been released officially.
i got it from Modaco,(i think cant quite remember), if someone could tell me how to post a download link i can put it up here. Also i have a rom which makes it relly easy to get 850Mhz back. Im at work at the moment so cant post that yet either.

Which New Zealand network would you recommend getting a Sim Card for?
Should I switch my ROM to a New Zealand based one? Hoping to use the free SatNav software too (is it called Navigon or something?), in case this makes a difference on ROM choice.
I've been told that 2degrees is the cheapest network.
Are there any hardware / software limitations on which network I should choose with a UK unit? 850Mhz band availability?

Welcome to NZ. The network will depend on your location: 2 Degrees is cheap but has low coverage in rural areas, Vodaphone is ok in cities. I am with NZ Telecom, they get a bit of flak for problems they have had in the past. However, they are investing huge amounts and have the best rural coverage. Please be aware that your phone will have to use the 850 band in some areas.
I recommend the JL2 modem (ROM kitchen) and Darky 9.3 with Voodoo kernel.
Navigation for GPS use.
I'm with 2Degrees and they're cheap. But as a poster above had mentioned, the coverage outside big cities is limited, especially for data. This of course will change with time. Plus I'm a big supporter of NZ owned businesses.
Vodafone is a horrible company to deal with. Plus they have a lot of network issues everywhere in the country.
I have heard good things about the XT network (Telecom) in terms of speeds and coverage. If I wasn't on the tight budget, this is what I would choose in NZ. I hope this helps. :>

Just a quick correction, coverage is fine as the device roams on Voda when out of zone. So if there's voda coverage, there's 2degrees coverage (data is not as cheap though).
I'm using CM7, JPM. All seems fine.

Will my UK I9000 SGS have 850MHz band available in the hardware? (sorry if this is a silly question). Will it be used if I have the correct firmware? Is 850MHz band used by all networks in NZ, or only for some networks?
All of the networks appear to be quite pricey for data. Who are the most cost effective for data? I'll be looking for either PAYG or Monthly Sim Only deals.

I presume you're talking about 850MHz 3G and not 2G.
Vodafone and 2degrees have 900MHz 3G.
Telecom has 850MHz 3G.
I think your UK i9000 supports 900MHz from what I have managed to find out.

ive got an international i9000 that i bought before work (telecom) stocked them - so I cant get staff subsidy on my cell heh - I have 2degrees - because of the data pack and living in town - it was bad coverage where i lived out on the west coast at murawai - but in town i have no issues - even in the middle of the telecom borg cube building - i get my 2degrees data and voice coverage
I cannot recommend anyone to you - but I have converted some of the telecom staff i9000's to darkyrom's The theory is that version of the rom supports the 850mhz band - I guess I find out tomorrow with one of them
About backing up your factory rom - root the rom is the minimum first step and then you can make an odin image out of whatever is on the phone.

I've gone with 2 degrees for now on a simple pre-pay sim and all looks good. I'll see how much I use it and maybe get an appropriate monthly contract if needed in the future.

Which CSC code do New Zealanders have? Should I, stick with my generic UK code, or move to a NZ one? What do you use and recommend?
Does which CSC I have affect my ability to use Navigon for free?
(I forget what my current CSC code is, but I noticed my Google Market is now priced in NZ dollars already, but they want to charge me for navigon download, which I thought was free over here. If you've rooted your sgs then try using this app called GPS AIDS from the market. Its very good, i usually get a gps lock in 5-10 seconds indoors with a cold start.

I was wondering whether I should use NZ server for gps or worldwide one...
Set to oceania.pool.ntp.org using FasterFix or other suitable apps.
Has anybody gone 2.3.3 yet? If yes, what about the modem performance on the XT network?

O rite. From what i remember there's only 3 or 4 to choose from(europe, north america, i mite be forgetting one). The results i posted above were for the europe pool. so i reckon anything better than that would do.

Sorry, I cannot answer that with certainty. I do not believe that there are vast differences. I have tried Asia, North America and our version Oceania. I am however, very unhappy with the GPS performance, in particular the length of time to get a fix. Needleess to say, I have followed most guides and tried various fixes. I am, however, limited in changing modems as I rely on 850mhz band.
Ok, so i brought my HTC inspire from America to India because im going to be studying here for the next 5 years. In america, i was running with the 3g internet and all.
After coming to India, I unlocked my phone through AT&T and bought a new sim card (Vodafone) and just recently initiated the 3g plan. However, upon starting it, it was apparent that the 3g would not work here, for i was constantly running on Edge. I was told that the band in America is lower than that of Indian company; I was told America runs off 1900mhz and India runs off at around 2100mhz. My Phone was of AT&T so im thinking it might only be going at 1900mhz, but I'm a bit confused because i unlocked it, unless that doesn't do anything to the band. So, anyway I was wondering if there was a solution to my problem? I've bought 3g network and it only runs off edge(2g). I read around about radio and something about rooting it, but I didn't want to try anything until i was almost sure it wasn't something that wasn't going to help me.

Phones like the Inspire 4G are "quad-band" or "world" phones. Which means that they can work and/or switch between the 4 major bands. Those bands being; GSM-850/900/1800/1900 MHz. Technically there are 14 GSM bands that can be hopped on with the right device. For 3GPP or 3G for short; can run on bands the 850 mhz to 1900 mhz bands which is what is most commonly used in North America and Brazil. I am trying to not get overly complicated with this because it is easy to do. Bottom line is in places like India and parts of Brazil they use the 1900 MHz band and it is paired with 2100 MHz to form what they call an IMT-compliant 2100 MHz band. In English, that is an overseas offshoot, acts and behaves like, 3G and will get you close to those 3G-like speeds lol!
That out of the way the information that you talked about, where you were told that the Americas run on lower bands; who told you that? AT & T or was it Vodafone? I would need to know a little more, but it does not sound like your phone is the issue. It sounds to me like its your SIM card. Not that it is defective or anything like, but was not parsed or set up properly for where you are. Let me know who you talked too and I can see what I can find out for you to try and help you narrow your problem down. You can PM me or just post a response. Hope the information I gave you so far was helpful.

All working well, but 3g is not working.

i picked up an inspire4g from USA and 6months later, my phone earlier used to turn off on its own, but now, it switches off as soon as i unplug it. htc guys call it a mother board issue, and after i googled htc issues, most indian buyers are having motherboard issues(rather, all of them). so, tehre should be something seriously wrong with htc or the service center people.

Unfortunately Inspire is useless for 3g in india. Unless 3g is started at GSM1900 band. Thats because India uses 2100 mhz band for 3g.

When i search on google i found rom changing basically use root browser and changes rom and change the Name Of Any Android ROM.

I'm running Darky Rom V10.2.2 and need some information on what modem to use on my network. I have tried quite a few but all have horrible results.
I'm running a Bell Mobility Edition of the Gt-i9000 on the Rogers network in Canada. I'm located in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Rogers has the same towers as AT&T if that helps.
Does anyone have any experience with modems in this area? Please don't point me to threads explaining everything I already know, I have read them all and they are all outdated or don't work for me. My phone successfully uses the 850 mhz band but my coverage is beyond awful and I live in a decently sized city.
Is it possible to get the actual modem used by Rogers or AT&T on the Captivate and use it on my Gt-i9000?

I will be as brief as possible. I know this has been beat to death, but I think it's a specific issue with my area, and just wanted to be sure. I have an unlocked defy red lens, kernel v: 2.6.32.9-g21f1a48, CM9-MotoIceGun-edition 1.0, baseband version EPU93_U_00.60.00
When I first unlocked the phone and installed my at&t sim, I had 3g, this was before rooting and custom rom. I was also in Chattanooga, TN. I live in Knoxville, TN and when I returned home, all I have been able to get is Edge. Have been messing with this for 4 days, tried everything that I've seen as far as 3g fixes. Called at&t today, and was informed that the two towers here in Knoxville are 1900 and 850/1900 shared. Long story short, does this mean I cannot get 3g where I live?
