Custom Roms / Battery Life - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone comment on how battery life is for the custom roms for the Nexus 10? More specifically: CM10.1, AOSP/AOKP, ParanoidAndroid - would it be comparable? Or better yet, are there any roms known to have considerably better battery life than stock?

Cyanogenmod 10 nightly (recent) 32%
3 days 21 hours 18 mins on battery
Screen 49% (3 hours 55 mins)
Chrome Beta 11% (1 hour 18 mins)
Android OS 11%
Pretty light use. I don't know how that compares to stock.

That looks some great battery life! Did you use SetCPU? Do you (or others who have experimented with voltages) mind sharing what voltage settings are generally considered stable?

Well I didn't undervolt. Sort of just left it at stock. And yes I'm using setcpu with profiles such as screen=1.4 GHz, browser =1.5 GHz and so on. Leaving the display on lower settings help as well

I'm on stock rooted ROM, nothing changed, I have my Bluetooth and Wifi turned on the whole day, with moderate usage it lasts 2 days, can't tell about Custom ROM because I still don't use it

Just about any of the major Froyo ROMs with a UV kernel (Bali, Overstock or Trigger UV versions) will give great battery life. Even the 2.2.1 versions (though I'm not sure what advantage that .1 gives)..
However, don't believe anyone when they say you can get "great" battery life on CM7 or ported GB Roms. It just ain't so. Yes, there have been improvements on those Roms, but you'll still get half the life of a Froyo ROM or worse no matter what you do. Stick with Froyo if battery matters at all to you.
thank you. i'll check those roms you guys recommended.

I've been able to replicate such life with other TW ROMS like 1.3.2_test and TARD with Bali 1.8.8 UV.
I haven't had much the same success with the Dragonmodz and Overstock UV kernels.

If you try Immortality 2.2 Kernel, use setCPU to undervolt. My set up is below (just a Reference since every CPU has different capability).
Stock KB5 with Immortality 2.2 Kernel
Max Freq: 800Mhz
Cpu Governor: Conservative
800Mhz || -100mV
400Mhz || -125mV
200Mhz || -150mV
100Mhz || -350mV
Phone runs smoothly and no Sleep of Death. The Back Cover stays COOL when doing web browsing, youtube, or playing game (Avatar SD Version does make the back cover warm up a little bit, just a little bit). No more burning up while charging. Battery life is Phenomenon.

Way to get battery battery life?

Hey guys, I'm sorry if there already are posts on this but yeah. My phone is only getting 12 hours max on faux 1.3 ghz and my rom is homebase 3.3 de-blur extreme
and i also have setcpu and I uv it and no widgets. But people are getting like 24 hours+ of heavy usage on their battery...What rom/kernel/uv settings are capable of getting that?

drop the oc kernel and replace with faux enhanced 2.0 1 ghz , setcpu only controls one core at the moment , faux has alittle more work to do on his kernal to get full control of 2nd core so it's not runing at 1300 and burning up battery power
homebase 3.4, update 5.4a , faux enhanced 2.0 1 ghz kernel . battery last for 2 days + 20% left
use setcpu , set up profiles, underclock the profiles
task manager, add most of the apps to auto end list
For me it helped to get rid of market, gmail app, set CPU profiles, alarms, auto syncing, Ebay, juice defender! Google apps seem to be worst offenders.

Battery Life
I had the same problem recently, especially with Faux's 2.0 kernel @ 1.1ghz(1.9 had better battery life :/). Even with Juice Defender(the saint of batter life) I was only getting like 16 hours. My first suggestion is to use 1ghz for standard use, and to create a CPU profile which drops clock speed to 216mhz when screen is off. The difference between 1.1ghz and 1ghz with me was 80% after 12 hours compared to 30%. As I mentioned before, if you're rooted, get JuiceDefender. It has typically gets me 1.4x-1.5x the battery life. That is, even in you're sad case, 6 hours of extra life. Finally, kill Facebook and Browser when you're not using them, they seem to kill battery life.
I don't miss any of it. I check gmail manually via k9 mail , and I can thaw market if I need it. Right now I'm 14 hours with 42% batt.

Cyanogenmod 7 with faux's enhanced stock kernel for CM7. Make sure you have the correct radio and calibrate your battery, another member has already posted the link to that thread. I don't use juice defender or any other task killers or anything like that. Brightness turned to 20%, set CPU profile set to powersave, gps satellites disabled. I'm at 7 hours and 46 minutes with 86% left. This is with 124 texts sent, 1 five or so minute call and a couple pictures taken. If this set up doesn't work for you consider buying a new battery.

Best Kernel for battery

Which ROM performs the best in terms of battery performance. If you are using any Governor and I/O setting please do mention them.
PA rom...Franco kernel...ondemand settings...
I'm also curious on what you guys experienced.
I'm currently testing Franco R15 with Stock JB on my Nexus 4. It's the first day and I'm running for 9 hours with 1h 46M of screen time.
So I'm expecting about 3h 30m of screen time.
Will give it a fews days and report back. Then I'll try out Matr1x.
Please use search next time because there are threads with the same exact title. No such thing as a best kernel. It is subjective such as if you were to ask the question, what is the best car for conserving gas usage.

So ~5 hours screen time. And you got 1.4 days on WiFi with hardly any awake time. That's not really a good measure of battery life.
I don't know about everyone else, but I find the Nexus 4 gets really good battery life. Maybe not as good as the GSIII or the H1X+, but those have tremendously aggressive power-saving features.
Using faux kernel with Snake Charmer (caps max freq on all 4 cores) and Eco Mode (only allows 2 cores to be simultaneously active) provides adequate performance with very good battery life; even better if you undervolt. You will definitely beat the GS3 or H1X+ with those faux kernel settings. I don't use Eco Mode, because my phone lasts nearly a day, and I can charge it mid-day. I should probably be more conservative so I won't have to replace the battery as soon, buttphuckit, I do what I want.
I've used faux, Franco, motley, and Matr1x a lot. As of now, the best battery with performance goes to Matr1x by Mathkid. Version 2.5 undervolts by 150, which my phone runs fine. However, a few people had instability because it was too low for their devices. Enter v3.0, which undervolts by 100 (and you can uv even more using System Tuner or perhaps Faux app). Either way, great battery life (I routinely get 5 hours screen time with 16 hours battery time, or 4 hours screen with 24 hours total, etc).
Absolute best battery life is probably faux with his battery optimized settings (1.35 max speed, snake charmer, eco mode, and some undervolt by 100 or so). It runs fairly well, but it's not as quick and smooth as stock because it sacrifices some of that for battery (fair trade off if you need it because it's still a damn fast phone). People have gotten 6 and even 7 hours screen time. Obviously this won't happen playing games but it's possible with light browsing and texting and whatnot.
Motley's kernel also gets good battery and excellent performance. Franco's kernel does too, but not quite as good of battery because it doesn't support undervolting YET. When it does, it might be the best battery for performance of all (likely).
I use Matr1x daily and am happy with it. Some people, even smart devs, will sometimes tell you undervolt battery gain is negligible. However, at least with this device, it can make a huge difference because it handles such a big undervolt while remaining stable. It also stays much cooler and will run at high clocks longer before reaching the thermal throttling limit.
Anyway, some people might disagree, but these are my experiences. Franco has a huge following and for good reasons. His kernels are awesome. I just don't think the battery life will compete until he adds undervolting. He has said this will come when he feels it is stable and good overall. I'll probably switch then unless Mathkid adds more features to his like gamma control, etc.
Hope this is helpful. Btw, another thing I really like about Matr1x kernel is that he uses the older touchscreen driver which increases screen sensitivity. Many people complain about the nexus 4 screen sensitivity, and if that applies to you, this will fix that.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
^^ A good write up, deserved its thanks. Am on latest rasbean & matr1x, never experienced smoothness & battery life like this. Screenshots at the Matr1x thread later today.
However, all users are different. Battery life WILL differ, that's the only certain thing.

Samsung Galaxy S3 *AWESOME STOCK BATTERY LIFE*

THIS THREAD WAS INSPIRED BY MOST OFF YOU WHO ARE TRYING TO GET MAXIMUM BATTERY LIFE WITH SOME CUSTOM ROMS.
Before Galaxy S3, I had Galaxy S2 which battery wasn't soo good. I was always searching for battery friendly roms and I was flashing one or two roms every day. After every custom rom I was thought like that: Why I done that, when every stock firmware gives better result(battery life and performance) then any custom rom. I know that there are some excellent custom roms, for me ,these are STOCK LOOK roms with bloatware deleted and some unused apps. But, we don't need to flash them when we can do that alone.
NOW,I HAVE GALAXY S3 :
Let's see my result on stock battery, stock rom (4.1.2 , DDELK1,XXELLC), and with some apps turned off in application manager, battery saving is turned on just for color of backoground, nothing else. That was heavy usage,I installed that firmware updated, all appps that I am using , and charged it. Viber,WhatsApp,Instagram,Sync,Wifi,3G,Facebook,Gmail, are always ON.
Results:
4h of screen on,phone was used(wasn't just screen on) , 52% battery left. I lose about 3-4% maximum during the night ( 7-8 hours) with wifi on.
See this on attachments.
Mostly ,my battery lasts for 2 days, I achieve min. 5,5 hours screen on in every charge with hd gaming, facebook, gmail, whatsapp, viber, about 40min-1h talk in 3g every day.
My tips for battery life improvement are:
-Turn the Energy saving(I turned it on just for background color i vibration,if you turn on full battery saving you will get much better result, but it seems to slow and laggy)
-Turn off apps that you aren't using in app manager( Settings,Application Manager,All > than find apps which are unusal for you. I turned off : All yahoo apps, samsung suggest, google +,flipboard, dual clock, chat on ,all samsung hubs because they doesnt work in my country, google maps(I use google earth).)

Hi Guys,
This is actually my 1st post, but I was looking around xda for couple of months now.
I am using stock rooted XXELLA with Siyah kernel. I can make my phone last easily for 2 days, with 2g mostly on, disabled lots of unused apps, lowest brightness, sync off, etc. and UC to 1200 mhz. I'm using pegasusq gov and noop scheduler.
But I can't imagine 4 hours screen on and get 52% battery left, or get 7,5 hrs totally. I always monitor the usage with BetterBatteryStats and when the screen is off I can even get about 4-6 hrs / 1%. But I can't reach >5,5-6 hrs screen on. Any suggestions? Do you think I can lower the min. brightness in build.prop?
Btw, I think if you share your battery stats, it would be nice if you also share your governor/scheduler and OC/UV values.

I don't think it would make any difference, since I have only few apps, I don't like putting garbage to my phone Could you maybe share kernel and partial wakelocks from BBS, maybe cpu states too?
And again about the 4h screen / 52% left - how did you use the phone? I can see no games, so only web surf etc?

Everyone uses their phone differently so comparing battery life is not possible, someone who demands smooth scrolling and instant response is not going to get 2 days use or more than 4hr screen on time.
Personally I'm not worried by stutters or lag, I'd rather get 9hr screen on time over 48hr up time - this is with a super lite ROM, I have all the bell and whistles turned off and all power saving options on, as close to AOSP as a stock based ROM can get.
I'm very happy with this phone, compared to my old htc sensation I no longer worry about battery life, I have two batteries which get swapped over between phone and desk charger every two days, unless playing games when I only get 1 day life.

I don't think this is all that spectacular to be completely honest. 4hours screen on time with 5hour since unplugged - pretty much nonstop use. Just my opinion though.

Hey op, sorry to say this but you might be wrong. For battery life it depends on kernels and tweaks rather than on roms. Roms are actually just themed/stock themed firmwares with additional apps/removed apps and pre-installed tweaks and kernels. Most roms use v6 supercharger tweak. For me I use phenomenal kernel which has undervolted and underclocked gpu and cpu. But if you want more options with oc/uv try boeffla kernel where there"s an app included that allows you to over/underclock you gpu and cpu. By underclocking, it will save more battery. My ohone lasted about 12+ hours of continuous use of my phone (gaming, watching videos) with the kernels I use

which version of vikinway?
I have had over 8 hours of screen time, but that was literally not using phone just leaving screen on with videos playing for a lot of the time, but everyday usage using the Xperia Rom I get about 5 hours. I charge every night so don't need 2 day 3 day usage etc, unless my plane crashes onto a deserted island where I have to survive with no form of electricity anywhere.

So to summarise op. You have created this thread to advise people to turn off a few apps and turn on power save mode. Ingenious.

Agree, the op's a total noob. Turning on power saving mode and closing apps is what an average user with common sense would do. What's so awesome and special about that. This thread is rubbish for advanced users but somewhat useful for a no brainer

Kernel for battery life.

Hello.
I'm looking for a kernel for the Nexus 4 of course with the best battery life.
I almost don't play games, I just need a kernel with gamma control, sound control, and one that would not cause stutter to the device with battery life.
I used Franco r203 and I had only 1:30hr screen time, now I'm trying Franco r203 Plus but it cause stutter and pretty much the same battery.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I'm currently using hells-Core and have 2 hours of screen-on with 40% battery left.
(Maybe there are better battery-friendly kernels out there, but HC performs pretty well.)
I enjoy Faux Kernel and undervolt 50 and under clock to 1.2 I can make it through a day no worries but this will depend in your usage as well. I do probably medium of everything such as social networking, internet browsing, emails and some games. I usually end the day with above 20%

Thanks, already got Hellscore and its good .
As you would have already known by know battery usage depends upon ROM build and apps and your usage patterns. To extend the battery a bit more you can Hellscore,Matr1x,Piasek kernels...they gave the best battery life for me. Try and let know

Hell score or matrix?which should i use i want to have Hood quality od sound
Both are best but Matr1x retains smoothness for me as compared to hellscore.Flash both and test for yourself
