Kernel for battery life. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I'm looking for a kernel for the Nexus 4 of course with the best battery life.
I almost don't play games, I just need a kernel with gamma control, sound control, and one that would not cause stutter to the device with battery life.
I used Franco r203 and I had only 1:30hr screen time, now I'm trying Franco r203 Plus but it cause stutter and pretty much the same battery.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I'm currently using hells-Core and have 2 hours of screen-on with 40% battery left.
(Maybe there are better battery-friendly kernels out there, but HC performs pretty well.)

I enjoy Faux Kernel and undervolt 50 and under clock to 1.2 I can make it through a day no worries but this will depend in your usage as well. I do probably medium of everything such as social networking, internet browsing, emails and some games. I usually end the day with above 20%

You can try to use r201 is more battery friendly if you like franco.

Thanks, already got Hellscore and its good .

As you would have already known by know battery usage depends upon ROM build and apps and your usage patterns. To extend the battery a bit more you can Hellscore,Matr1x,Piasek kernels...they gave the best battery life for me. Try and let know

Hell score or matrix?which should i use i want to have Hood quality od sound

Both are best but Matr1x retains smoothness for me as compared to hellscore.Flash both and test for yourself

Best ROM for performance/ battery?

I dont care much about customization. I just want great perfomance and good battery life. It is really hard to choose a rom because all of them feel almost the same? Thanks
I use rasbeanjelly with trinity kernel currently at 71% with nine hours on and two hours fourteen minutes of screen time I've gotten two days with five hours screen time before and still had about 25% battery left. That's with wifi on off while tablet is asleep, location services on, and two email accounts on sync. I got some slightly better time on Franco's kernel but I had to disable location services to stop SoDs I read that a voltage bump might fix that. Making it worth another look. As always try around and see what works for you not all of these tablets are created equal.

Stock ......
There is no best ROM choose one and stick with it or flash another.

You have to try them out for yourself and decide.
I personally like SmoothROM with Clemsyn's Battery Saving kernel.

Thx I love smoothrom!
Clemsyn's battery saving kernel is definitely the best for battery life imho.

Best Kernel for battery

Which ROM performs the best in terms of battery performance. If you are using any Governor and I/O setting please do mention them.
PA rom...Franco kernel...ondemand settings...
I'm also curious on what you guys experienced.
I'm currently testing Franco R15 with Stock JB on my Nexus 4. It's the first day and I'm running for 9 hours with 1h 46M of screen time.
So I'm expecting about 3h 30m of screen time.
Will give it a fews days and report back. Then I'll try out Matr1x.
Please use search next time because there are threads with the same exact title. No such thing as a best kernel. It is subjective such as if you were to ask the question, what is the best car for conserving gas usage.

My first cycle (settings on signature) gave me almost 4hs of screen time.
Trying second cycle today.

I'm going to give francos kernel a run to see if I can squeeze a little more out the battery

I'm on Stock rooted using Franco's R15 kernel since a couple of days. Every charge cycle brings a slight improvement. Will test the kernel for a week and then flash Matrix's kernel and compare.
Thanks for letting us know.

So ~5 hours screen time. And you got 1.4 days on WiFi with hardly any awake time. That's not really a good measure of battery life.
I don't know about everyone else, but I find the Nexus 4 gets really good battery life. Maybe not as good as the GSIII or the H1X+, but those have tremendously aggressive power-saving features.
Using faux kernel with Snake Charmer (caps max freq on all 4 cores) and Eco Mode (only allows 2 cores to be simultaneously active) provides adequate performance with very good battery life; even better if you undervolt. You will definitely beat the GS3 or H1X+ with those faux kernel settings. I don't use Eco Mode, because my phone lasts nearly a day, and I can charge it mid-day. I should probably be more conservative so I won't have to replace the battery as soon, buttphuckit, I do what I want.
I've used faux, Franco, motley, and Matr1x a lot. As of now, the best battery with performance goes to Matr1x by Mathkid. Version 2.5 undervolts by 150, which my phone runs fine. However, a few people had instability because it was too low for their devices. Enter v3.0, which undervolts by 100 (and you can uv even more using System Tuner or perhaps Faux app). Either way, great battery life (I routinely get 5 hours screen time with 16 hours battery time, or 4 hours screen with 24 hours total, etc).
Absolute best battery life is probably faux with his battery optimized settings (1.35 max speed, snake charmer, eco mode, and some undervolt by 100 or so). It runs fairly well, but it's not as quick and smooth as stock because it sacrifices some of that for battery (fair trade off if you need it because it's still a damn fast phone). People have gotten 6 and even 7 hours screen time. Obviously this won't happen playing games but it's possible with light browsing and texting and whatnot.
Motley's kernel also gets good battery and excellent performance. Franco's kernel does too, but not quite as good of battery because it doesn't support undervolting YET. When it does, it might be the best battery for performance of all (likely).
I use Matr1x daily and am happy with it. Some people, even smart devs, will sometimes tell you undervolt battery gain is negligible. However, at least with this device, it can make a huge difference because it handles such a big undervolt while remaining stable. It also stays much cooler and will run at high clocks longer before reaching the thermal throttling limit.
Anyway, some people might disagree, but these are my experiences. Franco has a huge following and for good reasons. His kernels are awesome. I just don't think the battery life will compete until he adds undervolting. He has said this will come when he feels it is stable and good overall. I'll probably switch then unless Mathkid adds more features to his like gamma control, etc.
Hope this is helpful. Btw, another thing I really like about Matr1x kernel is that he uses the older touchscreen driver which increases screen sensitivity. Many people complain about the nexus 4 screen sensitivity, and if that applies to you, this will fix that.

^^ A good write up, deserved its thanks. Am on latest rasbean & matr1x, never experienced smoothness & battery life like this. Screenshots at the Matr1x thread later today.
However, all users are different. Battery life WILL differ, that's the only certain thing.

What am I doing wrong? Short battery life and heating issues!

Hey guys, I have a serious problem with my battery life.
I am currently on PA 3.5 and PA stock kernel but this has been an issue for a long time.
If I barely use my n4, the battery will last over 24 hours, but calling or gaming will kill my battery really quick.
Playing let's say candy crush saga will kill my battery in less than one hour and my Nexus will reach really high temperatures. I also have the visible glue on some parts of my display. Some of you may know what I'm talking about.
So what would you recommend me to do? I'm actually quite happy with my n4, but I want to be able to play a stupid game for 20 mins without worrying about my battery...
I've wiped my battery stats after Rom updates when I felt like and I'm also using greenify which is hibernating background apps to save battery.
I guess I will have to use an other kernel, right?

I`am using Franco kernel r134 atm, you might try it. Getting good batterylife and performance and color control, and undervolting may limit the temperature. I have a faster binned cpu and i undervolted -100mV (conservatily).
You might also look at other good custom kernels here on the thread, there are plenty.
I was using Franco kernel before, but I kept the stock PA kernel as the color configuration was better as with Francos app display control. Now I flashed r134 and reinstalled display control to see that gamma settings were added I guess I'll stick to that kernel now and see how my battery likes it.
Which app are you using for undervolting your n4? I installed cpu tuner, but there is no way to undervolt.

I'm using Franco kernel #666 and it's giving me good battery life and very good performance. I've undervolted -125 mV and the heating issue is gone now. The colors look awesome too.

[Q] Franco r65 Kernel Settings

Anyone got any good r65 kernel settings for battery optimized? I love the Franco Kernel but my battery life is lacking. Especially when its in standby mode with the cover closed.
BTW, Im running PA 3.65 and downloading 3.67 as I type this..
The default settings are actually about as good as it gets, short of underclocking. You might consider trying another ROM to see if your battery problem improves at all. I liked PA a lot, but even without HALO my battery life was terrible.

Use better battery stats to see what is keeping your device awake, it should use very little power in sleep.
May try using one of many apps that can turn off wifi in sleep and check out greenify.
This may not be exactly what you want to hear, but I switched over to Aospal, a linaro version of PA. I have had significantly better performance and battery, both of which vanilla pa failed to deliver. I also am using m kernel, and I lowered the CPU frequency cap to 1200 MHz. I am using otherwise its default settings. My battery life is more than doubled from when I was using vanilla pa. So if you are interested in switching, (it still has everything from pa!) this is working for me.

Currently using r65 and coudnt complain about the battery.
While checking out roms, you could also look at apps you install. Some very poorly coded apps (especially facebook) would just eat up your battery, and use a lot of memory.

ROM with best battery life?

Coming from an LG G2 (long story), battery life is what I miss the most. The nexus 4 has about half the screen on time than my g2 did.
I'm already unlocked and rooted but still stock ROM. Are there any Roms that significantly improve battery life?
I found smart 3G on Cataclysm to be pretty good at saving battery.
ROMs and kernels have little to do with battery. Your usage, signal for mobile data and WiFi, screen brightness, your configuration for location services, gps and the like and your apps determine your battery life.

I'd try Paranoid. I used it for a while after using stock and I found that the battery improved.
roms have absolutely zilch when it comes to battery life. only thing rims can do with battery is reduce it. generally, the more added mods/features a rom has, the worse the battery life. but not always. battery life is determined by hiw you personally use your phone, how you set it uo, what apps you use, and the quality of your phone/data connection. everything else, including kernels, have a very minimum effect on battery.
Well
When I was with Carbon, the play store thing killed my battery to 3hrs on screen time
Switched over to Purity Rom with Hells kernel and I have 5-6 on screen time
WiFi on all the time, no data or GPS or Bluetooth.
Mostly Reddit and a game or two, and a movie

Okay, but why is the battery life better with an another kernel?
I use the HeelsCreed kernel and Mahdi rom. My battery life is better with the HeelsCreed kernel as with the Kernel of the Mahdi rom.
P.S.: I know my english is bad, sorry for that

set up your CPU and everything else just how the kernel sets it up for you, and you'll get the same battery life. be more active, set things up manually.

can you tell the story please , anyway ROM has weee little to do with battery life , its mostly on how you use it and the kernel you are using as well as sync loops and dodgy leaky apps , my personal setup is rom = paranoid android and kernel = hellsdoctor , using synapse app i switched the maximum clock speed to 1.2 Ghz , and changed the maximum core online to two, gpu is overclocked by default , rest is, location settings are turned off only turned on when required , brightness is set to 50 % , no dodgy apps on the phone , i can squeeze about 5 and half hours sometimes 6 its good enough for this battery size though and hope it works out for you :good:
