Won't reconnect to mobile network until rebooted. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having a problem with my newly purchased Nexus 4.
I just received this 5 days ago, and I have noticed a problem. Sometimes, my Nexus disconnects with my network provider, and then it won't reconnect until I reboot it. I can't figure out how to fix this issue, as it is annoying and happens randomly. I don't know how to recreate the issue. I know I am supposed to have a connection, because my old Galaxy Nexus sitting right next to my Nexus 4 connects to the network fine.
Just after the last disconnect, I rebooted and allowed Data Roaming, as someone from Android Central said that it might help with keeping my phone connected. Only time will tell if that helps or not, but do you guys have any idea what could be causing this issue? I am on T-Mobiles $30 Monthly4G plan. Thanks.
UPDATE: My N4 also tends to Roam much more than my GNex. Could this be the cause of the problem?

I checked on T-Mobile's website and my settings match what they say I should have.
I have also just tried fooling around with WCDMA, and it has seemed to fix the problem roaming a lot and I have a better data connection now. But I still don't know whether or not my connection to the network will drop.

I'm with three.UK and I have the same problem I think its got something to do with 4.2.2 and not allowing wcdma permanent three network is only 3g that could be the problem

I've rang Google up but they didn't really help sound like software problem hopefully get fixed in 4.3 or we could root it but that's why I bought a nexus to stop the addiction

You bought a nexus to stop the addiction of rooting? I bought a nexus to feed the addiction. If I wanted to stop I would have gone for a fruit phone.
Back to topic I have the same issue. Have had it since day one of the first batch of phones shipped and through a newer RMA nexus. Google and t mobile have no answers and blamed each other. Dunno.

If you are using the prepaid plan, it's going to have subtle differences in roaming and coverage; perhaps that accounts for something.

I know what you mean but I rooted to get the latest updates but with the nexus I should always get the first , as for the network bug we will have to wait and see 4.3

If its a software bug then why haven't many more have the same issues?
It seems that my signal reception seems to decay over a long period of time. When my phone first reboots, its as strong as ever. But then a day passes and then my phone starts to roam a lot more. Then finally, it just doesn't connect at all. Looks like I am going to have to give Google a call, because this is not right.

Don't have that problem with my nexus, and I'm running stock android 4.2.2 also. Have you tried airplane mode before rebooting? You don't need the data roaming ON, if your not using it. You could try by selecting the network operator manually, or in the worst case scenario, try a complete reset via recovery. You can also try to get the SIM of the galaxy nexus into the nexus 4 (your gonna have to cut it) sometimes the SIM is the problem, happened once on my HTC Inspire, got a new SIM and the problem was fixed. ?Hope you can resolve your issue.

I think its not a common fault but if your network is 3g only then I think this could be the problem and you would only realise that I have only had it for a few weeks I don't want RMA again if this only a software fault . like I said its got something to do with lte and radio restrictions on the 4.2.2 I reckon and Google won't admit it,

Its not even that, why my Nexus 4 seems to LOVE to roam, while my Galaxy Nexus hated roaming. I don't know why. Well anyways, just got off the phone with both T-Mobile and Google, both of them don't know what the problem is. Just had to Factory Reset my phone. But right off the bat, jumped straight to Roaming, so I am afraid an RMA is in my future.

Fair doos at least you know but I still think its a three network problem with the way my network is HSDPA+ and the phone can't handle 3g to hdspa+ could be radio oringated oh well we'l see

Well I actually still don't quite know, it could be my sim card causing issues, but I just hope that my next phone is better and everyone just works out of the box. The reviews for this phone are glowing, but so far all I see are problems.

I have all the same issues and I am on the same plan. My daughter's Nexus 4 is fine on the same plan and I tried her sim but it doesn't make a difference on my phone. Any custom ROM make a difference for anyone?

Sounds like a hardware problem, like mine. I'm hoping to set up an RMA tomorrow. I am also going to T-Mobile to get them to check out my SIM card, even though its brand new. I might also buy a cutter online, because I still have my old SIM from my Galaxy Nexus and it was perfect.

I had this problem with my release day N4 on America's AT&T network. I would very frequently disconnect, even though others around me would not. My old Galaxy S had no such issue. After several weeks of frustration and dozens of threads (really, you should have searched, there's dozens of threads), I got an RMA from Google and they sent me a new N4 (the one before the nipples came out). Now, I still occasionally get hiccups wherein the signal bar indicates connection to Google servers (it's colored in, not grey/pale). However, my phone no longer completely disconnect from network like my original (btw, you can just toggle airplane mode; that usually fixed it for me). I just have to wait a 5~10 seconds for a proper connection to be re-established.
After having read hundreds of posts about this issue; and arguing with ignorant, stock users who were lucky enough to have received an order with a sufficiently working radio (they just assumed that root alone was the cause...), I only have one piece of advice for you. It's been the only solution in all of my research, as well as the one that helped me: Return Merchandise Authorization.

Nexus 4 drops all service when entering HSPA+ area

Hey guys lurker here finally registering to get some help.
I have a nexus 4 with T-Mobile. I bought it unlocked through Google and have it on the same plan I had my G2 on.
My problem is every time I get into a HSPA area my service just drops. Like completely drops. I cannot even make a call. It will come on then off then on then off. It makes the phone useless. When I'm on edge it's perfectly fine.
I went to T Mobile and got a brand new sim car and that did not help my problem.
Much appreciated any help I can get.
Factory reset first and see what happens.

That happens when the radio on the N4 switches between 3G and HSPA doing a factory reset won't affect the radio. In other words its the carrier coverage in your area. Try Straight Talk with At&t

I've got a Nexus 4 on AT&T and i've got HSPA (no +, i've checked in settings). It seems when my phone switches between towers i lose service until i go in and select AT&T from a list of available networks. On other phones in this area i always have Tmobile and AT&T, but with this one i'm getting two AT&T's. I usually select AT&T, but the last few days i've tried selecting "automatically select network." It doesnt appear to have made any changes. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before i factory reset this bad boy.
Factory reset, reflash of the stock ROM using the nexus toolkit, unroot and custom Roms cm10 and paranoid android. Nothing has helped my issue. I have the LTE plan and the WAP APN gives me hspa+. Still getting a signal drop every time I move more than a mile or so.

Unstable network connection (AT&T)

Hey guys so I love my nexus 4 I've had it for about three weeks now. One thing that is very frustrating is that my network connection is constantly going on and off. On the status bar it goes from full blue bars with an H and then all of a sudden I try to use an app and it says no network connection and the blue bars turn grey and it just goes on and off every couple seconds. It has done it probably 10 times as I'm writing this. Anyone else have this problem? Help!

I'm in the Chicago area and I get the same thing every so often. I downloaded an app called fresh network and it helps. When I get that fluctuating signal, I run the app and it connects me to a better tower and the issue goes away.

I have the same issue when I won't get my work emails and would have to disable/enable my "Data" connection in order to get my emails sync right away which is a little annoying.
Another issue that I have for example is that I can't run the "speedtest" App on my phone using the default APN from AT&T so after looking around I switched from WAP to PHONE (unfortunately I am on my company plan and don't know what kind of plan I have) and speedtest is now working fine.
And finally, I followed "gotzaDroid" and downloaded the "Fresh Network App" and my download speed spikes to 5Mbps (still using the PHONE APN instead of WAP) when it usually spikes at 2.7Mbps. As of right now, after playing with it for 5 minutes I can say that I am happy with this App.
i'm down here in houston and i was having the same problem. i have a grandfather plan from when the iphone first came out. dropped my sim card in and was barely even getting 2g speeds. couldn't even do a speed test. from what i've heard from other members on the forum is that AT&T doesn't recognize the N4 as an official smartphone in their database. you'd have to call them and get them to redirect their 4G data plan to your phone. there's a specific IMEI number you give them (not the one on your phone or else it'll turn up nothing in their database). if i find it, i'll post it here. once that's done, you should get the high speed data. but for me, i was done paying my grandfathered plan, over $100/month. i switched over to t-mobile's monthly plan and it's been awesome. got up to 15 MB/s even though sometimes is says 3G rather than H.
Similar issue. I have full bars, but its just the data connection which keeps flapping. (The H for HSPA keeps appearing disappearing) I am on the original iphone unlimited 4g data plan.
This happens only when using the "phone" APN (http://mmsc.mobile.att.net). But when i use the wap.cingular APN, no such issue. But obviously, with this APN, the speeds are unknown (speedtest app reports connectivity issue, but data works fine across all apps. And from feel, its definitely hspa with a H in the display)
EDIT: located in bay area.
I have also found today that sometimes toggling airplane mode on and off clears it up too

I used to have this problem on AT&T. Solved it. It depends on what dataplan you have and what IMEI number your number is tied to. Tell me your details and I can try to help.

Reboot (not very practical) or making a call fix it. I'm on a n4 imei with the 4G (hspa not lte) unlimited personal smartphone plan.

You certainly can, with actual service..
for those on straight talk using att... line three and four of your apn. proxy and port. delete those. this will stop you from having to go through the starght talk servers in chicago. this should speed you up and hopefully fix you up. its also rumored to keep you from being throttled once you hit the threshold.
the same proxy trick can be done for those on att. i am not on t-mobile so i cannot speak for those.
it goes without saying... if you have never manually entered your apn since you got the nexus.... you need to find the correct apn and enter it. just inserting a sim card is not how you get the apn. it has to be entered manually or flashed in a modem (for carrier phones).
for those on att or att straight talk. all you need is one apn. and enter your phone and mms on the same one.

Signal loss

Hey guys, long time lurker infrequent poster. I recently got my nexus (loving it by the way) but there is 1 thing that I have noticed that kind of bugs me. Noticed everytime I'm connected to my data connection my signal bars go down considerably. (No data i get full bars 95%of the time, with hspa or hspa+ im lucky to get even 1) This will happen whether i disable my data in the settings, or connect to wifi.
I am kind of new to the whole unlocked device idea having to add the APN settings and what not, and I definitely did not have this problem with my last two devices. (Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy Nexus) if anyone has some insight that'd be great, I'm going to head down to my carrier store tomorrow, to see if they might be able to help me ( chances are probably not they're pretty useless)

Are you using a new carrier, for you? T-mobile maybe? Are you indoors?
The nexus 4 generally has very good reception, unless their is so,ethi g wrong with the device.
If your a new t-mobile customer building penetration can be low compared to other carriers.
Outside, inside, happens everywhere. And I'm on Bell. Same plan, same carrier as my last two phones.

I noticed some issues as well, but only on custom ROMs. My only conclusion is that it was something with the APN. I googled and found some APN settings to try, which has really helped me. For me, it was mostly with 3g to hspa switching, it'd toggle back and forth and would time data out. Since I've changed those, works much better. I'm on T-Mobile though.

Horrible signal/data on Orange(EE) UK

I've read around and noticed that there seems to be a lot of people having issues on EE, T-Mobile and orange with this device.
On my S3 the signal was amazing, never and issue but on this its always dropping signal and as for the data there's not much point even trying. Drops every single time you they and do anything!
I've been on several different ROMs and the issue seems to follow no matter what I'm on (CM10.1, PA, AOKP) etc..
Any ideas on what I can do?
Thanks

Glad I'm not the only one, I posted last night about it. I thought the wireless was the issue too but I think that's the dodgey wireless router in this building. Maybe we need to change APN settings too? I'm on orange.
I tried manually selecting the network instead of automatic and seemed to work for about 10 mins solid but dropped again.

I've tried that too. Tried restarting, switching off all wireless connections, etc. Not working well. Now I can't get the h on my wireless icon either.
http://orangeservicestatus.co.uk/ <--- I think I found out why... :/
BTW I spoke to an orange customer service representative on the phone earlier. He said he'd pass on the information to the technical department since I mentioned that a lot of people were complaining online about connection issues recently. My data connection was back to normal late afternoon. How is yours?
I use mine on 3 Network and must admit it's the fasted thing ever. I thought HTC was good but this Nexus is best by far. I left Orange a short while ago as they're useless.
I'm getting the same issue. On T-Mobile UK(EE) I'm thinking it is a problem with the sim card. Had a galaxy nexus before this and data was great. Got a micro sim from the store for this phone. It appears like the connections on the sim are all to one side and touch the metal sim tray. Don't know if this may cause the issue?

Really? I haven't checked this on mine, I doubt this could be the problem? I wish orange had an official service status website or something instead of the 3rd party twitter based one... lol

[Q] Dropping 4G LTE down to 3G

Hey, I don't know if this is a device issue or a problem with the carrier but, I've been dropping from 4G to 3G ever since I updated to the 4.4.4 NI2... this has never been an issue in my area before this update with any of the phones I've had. Anyone else having this issue or have any ideas as to why it's happening or how to fix it?
Thanks!

I use it but not as my sms app... I've spoken with Verizon and they say it isn't their issue, Samsung said I could send the phone to them but it can't be a hardware issue because it only started after I updated to the NI2 firmware and modem.
So no one else is having this issue then? Cause Verizon is totally at a loss.
Like I said I had this issue when I first did the update but it was a setting in hangouts as my SMS to use a different APN

Verizon is a bunch of clueless idiots. I am seriously regretting my move from t-mobile. Verizon call quality, Bluetooth connections, and customer service are the absolute worse.
I wish I could help, but after doing some research it seems Verizon's poor signal quality and poorly designed networks are the cause of most of my issues. I have gone through two S5's and both are nearly unusable for phone calls. Network speed is the garbage. I am stuck with a pos phone and service for the next two years.
Seems like some kind of update in the area, after over a week I'm starting to hear complaints out of other phone users. Even a friend of mine who'd ranted about how if I had an iPhone 6 I'd still have 4G has now dropped to 3G while I'm starting to see 4G return little by little. It's been speculated that they are prepping for XLTE in my area and that could be the issue... little in the way of definitive explanation though.
Can someone post what there APN settings are, cause I looked around and the settings I see online do not match exactly my settings.
Settings, more networks, access point names. Unfortunately that won't give you any options. In google hangouts, settings, SMS, scroll down to advanced, access point names, that's where I had to change mine.

ditto
I'm having this issue here in LA. I chalked it up to the new NI2 modem at first, but I've flashed back and forth with NE9, NHA, and even NCG (original) and still seeing my 4-5 bars of 4G LTE drop mysteriously to 3-4 bars of 3G for no apparent reason. I'm even getting 1x at times. Also, to clarify, this is all while sitting still at my office in downtown LA.
The wall I have hit is simply:
Samsung offered to have me send the phone to them for possible repairs, which means going without my phone for at least 3 to 4 weeks...
Verizon, a corporate employee has confirmed that this is an issue that has been getting brought up more and more and they're working to correct the issue with the next OTA update. The problem is how random this issue is... why are some devices seeing the signal loss and others not?
It's a waiting game at this point.
