Hi I am using a Nexus 4 and when I plug in my headphones, I can only hear the sound sometimes. Sometimes it comes out the speaker for like a second and other times, there is no sound from the speakers or the headphones. If I move the headphone plug the music stops as if the device detected the headphones coming off. I have tried with 2 pairs of earphones and 2 pairs of headphones. Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it.
Thanks for your help.

Same here. Worse and worse since a month.
I've read a lot of things about that... some have put some air from a can because of some lint and they managed to have headphones working again. You could try that.
I was about to phone to google in about a week to see if the nexus 4 can be replaced for that reason (it's not software related, i have tried differents roms and different music apps) (and i've tried a lot of different headphones... anyway, "before" it worked so i don't know, the nexus 4 fails to detect the headphone properly)
Right now you could use an app called SoundAbout and force the sound to use the headphone... but it doesn't work that well, if i move my nexus 4 the music player stops playing, so it isn't that useful.
Does the actual connector socket wobble a little? Mine does and it gives me audio issues. I think I'm going to have to RMA my 211k
Yes i think i can say that it moves a little bit. I remind of someone who said he had opened the nexus 4 to fix the headphone jack but i am unable to find where i read that neither if it was really a nexus 4, anyway at the the time and now i don t want to open it... please tell us if google accept to rma for that if you tell them before me, i wont be in canada before next week
Now I have no sound from my headphones and the phone won't detect them either. I'm gonna send it in to Google. It doesn't look like it will fix itself over time. Its getting worse and worse.

Even if you force the output to headphone using the app SoundAbout?
Anyway even with SoundAbout it is annoying i will call google too, tell us what google tell you when you call i am afraid they say we have destroyed the headphone jack...
I will call Google in about a week (once school is finished in Canada). They should replace it if you still have warranty. Did you root your phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
So I called google (me and my poor english when i speak).
I went back to stock before calling and relocked the bootloader ( http://hippowise.com/revert-stock/ )
But the google representative only asked me to do a factory reset in order to see if this would solve the problem. I haven't said that i just got back to stock and no it doesn't work. I would'nt have told that i had rooted it and had a custom rom. Anyway even with stock rom it doesn't work.
So my case will be reviewed by another person but he told me that there will be a replacement, i will receive an email with the process (i guess the usual process... pre-authorize a payment, they send me a new one, then i ship them the one that isn't working properly).
So that's it... no miracle... it will have to be replaced
I have received mine. Sadly, as we are canadian, it is the canadian one (booklet in french), probably same batch than the one that wasn't working. Hope it will be ok
Are you guys talking about a 302K batch of phones or a 301K here?

Hm, I've also gotten numerous 301k devices (RMAs) but they don't have any of the headphone issues. Probably just a one-off thing for you guys.
more the same
My phone thinks that headphones are always plugged in. I tried blowing out the headphone jack, checking jack for lint (none), and have had no success. I cant RMA it because I was impatient and bought it from an ebay scalper as soon as it was released. So... I ordered a new headphone jack from Hong Kong. It should be here in about a week now. (Wish me luck!)
I imagine that mine is broken from wear and tear. I use headsets a lot at the gym, and other places. Probably 40 plug and unplugs a week for the life of the phone... The soundabout app works for the most part, but I still have issues with music starting to play or pause when headphones are not even plugged in. Most annoying being when it decides to pause on bluetooth in the car... I really hope the replacement jack solves my issues.
I use my nexus4 essentially as a mp3 player so i think i might have given a hard time to the headphone jack... i am now really taking care of it. I understand your frustration, i have thought about bluetooth but there is really something wrong if the player pauses... with bluetooth enabled... in the end, even soundabout wasnt working properly. Luckily google rma is great otherwise it would have been my last lg phone... i cant understand that we are able to abuse a headphone jack and there was no lint in the headphone jack.
My case has a little sealable flap over the headphone jack and charging jack that keeps lint out.
Yeah, I think mine doesn't work because of wear and tear too. Its been unplugged violently a couple of times when it fell out of my pocket. I gonna call Google this week. I have tried factory resetting but it still doesn't work. Do they send you a replacement before you send your phone in?

I phoned them.
I explained them what happened (i unrooted it and locked bootloader just in case they would check i have a custom rom)
He asked me to perform a factory reset.
He told he will send my case to someone who will send me an email with instructions
A few hours later i received an email with a special link to buy the n4 again but it won t be really charged if you send your n4 in the next three weeks.
Then you receive an email telling they will send you another n4
In this email you can print a ups stamp that you will put on the package so it is free shipping to send back the other (lg repair center in toronto)
Then i received the new n4 then i put the old one in the package and used the ups Web site to schedule a free picking at home.
Honestly google gave a great customer support .
Thanks bro. I will call them

For your new device, did you have to pay for shipping given two shipping options? (3-5 days and 1-2days) why are we supposed to pay for shipping if its a "replacement"..
I dont know if i use the exact english word but it isnt like you really pay you only pre authorize google to take the money... because they send you a new one before receiving yours... so if you dont send them your old one they will take the money, they dont want to be screwed
For the shipping i dont know because for canada you cant choose an option, if i were you i would chose the expensive one as in the end you wont pay...

Hi guys,
I sold the atrix to a friend but some how the phone's ear piece is now working, not sure if it was dropped ( no sign of damange or water)
Anyways its a ATT one but i checked on moto UK website with IMEI and it says warranty and 0 charge to repair.
Now the phone has unlocked BL, now if I have to send it to moto, can I restore as factory?
will this lock the BL? I dont want moto to void the warranty.
Advice appreciated.
As a last resort, you can always buy a spare part with an earpiece speaker on ebay ($15), as I did. It seems that earpiece problem is one of the most frequent with atrix.

I haven't received the cable yet, but I've watched some take apart videos on youtube and it seems to be rather easy to replace the cable. I think I can do it myself
I think I will go with the warranty, will try get a authorised 3rd party to repair , carphone warehouse or sent it to moto.
Cheers

Happened to my ATRIX and my Motorola Q. Motorola quality control failure.

I also had this issue. I flashed stock rom so unlock wouldn't pop up on reboot. Took it to att warranty center and walked out with new one in 15 min.

I have the same problem. I bought an AT&T Atrix on eBay, used. I am from Argentina, so importing it was expensive and returning it to seller is not a option.
Phone has no sound at all on the earpiece. I bought the flex cable from China that has the earpiece, power switch, interface to fingerprint reader and the front camera. I replaced it really carefully but it did not Fix the problem. Front camera works, on/off button and fingerprint reader works. Earpiece does not work. By the way, the flex cable from China was the original part. Exactly the same as the one that came in the phone. Same serial numbers et all.
I connected a pair of headphones (Original Motorola) and if I turn the volume real high all I hear is noise. It is like the audio amp for the earpice is toast... also no music through the headphones. External speaker works ok.
It is really disappointing to have such a phone and that it does not work and I have no warranty at all.
Any ideas?
For what I have read, Motorola has replaced the faulty phones, so it looks like there is no fix, prolly mobo replacement? But they don't sell that.
Best Regards
Hi,
My Atrix has failed on jack headphone. Then I sent it to the warranty service. It took almost 30 days to get back, because some dumbass returned it to me with a nonworking powerbutton (and it still had fingerprints INSIDE LCD).
Well, it came back, at least. But, 2 days after it, the ear piece, the call speaker stopped to work. As I use Android system info app, I get some red output (errors) when I try to call someone:
E/AudioPostProcessor
Error:Invalid accessory 18 in
am_config2coeffs_audio_device
D/AudioPostProcessor
getOutputGain(): unsupported device, set to SPEAKERPHONE!
Besides the factory reset I've already tried, there's no chance that these messages above indicates software problem?
Should the hardware replacement be the only way?
Thanks in advance
i think the right answer here would be not what kind of problem it is but what do you want to do about it. if you want to completely rule out software you could unlock, root, flash custom ROM. if you are uncertain and prefer to go for the safe route and warranty is still available then just send it back to repair, without any SW mods.

Had the same problem with my Atrix 4G, its not software related at all as I tried several different roms.
i am currently having this problem and have looked everywhere for a solution. this is not a software problem it is quite a common fault with the atrix 4g. the only option is to have it replaced.

Same issue with my girlfriends Atrix. Works fine over the speakerphone but the headset has no sound. Just submitted it for warranty work.
I have phantom headphones in CM7.
This just came out of nowhere. Everything worked fine an hour ago.
All of a sudden the headphones icon is blinking. The phone thinks it has headphones connected, so it's blocking sound to the phone speaker. But there are no actual headphones involved.
Restarting didn't stop it.
I didn't make any system changes today. There's nothing physically in the headphone plug.
But my phone is suddenly useless as a phone because it thinks headphones are being plugged in and out every second.
Anyone got any idea what the hell is going on?
I reflashed CM and the problem is still there.
I reflashed stock 2.2.1 and the problem is still there. So it's definitely an out of nowhere hardware issue.
And this phone is a warranty replacement that I just got 3 days ago. Awesome.
Does HTC have ANYONE actually doing quality control?
And now T Mobile is sending me yet another refurbished phone. So I get to spend another night reloading all my stuff and tweaking settings. [sarcasm] Awesome. [/sarcasm]

that happened to me too and i just cleaned out the jack and rebootet and bingo. dust and gunk get in there and give you hell. and ive heard bad things about refurbished phones but ive never been able to tell the difference between that and a new one with ones ive had. it probly depends on the place it was its refurbed at.

Can you give me more details on how you cleaned it out?
I've picked at it with a tiny screw driver, put a headphone plug in it and spun it around, and hit it with compressed air.
Nothing seems to make the problem go away. Did you have some kind of awesome technique?
And T-Mobile is losing major credibility with me over this issue. I just bought the phone at the end of August. This is already my 2nd bad one. The T-Mobile guy on the phone told me there would be processing charges for BOTH phones on my next bill after the guy in the store who processed the exchanges specifically told me there would be no cost. And now I'm apparently waiting until November 16th to get the 2nd replacement after the guy in the store told me I'd get it today (next business day) and that's after it took this broken one a week to get to me after the guy in the store told me I'd have it the next day the first time.
When I got to the supervisor at T-Mobile she made it 10 times worse by trying to up sell me the warranty and exchange program saying that's the only way she could have this fixed by tomorrow.
I'm like "It was supposed to get fixed by today for no fees or charges according to the guy who processed the exchange. Now you're telling me you've added fees after the point of sale? And now you want me to agree to another $15 a month so you can get this fixed tomorrow? It was supposed to get fixed TODAY for no fees! I just bought the phone 2 months ago and I'm already waiting on a 3rd model due to the extreme lack of quality control on these POS's. Now you want me to spend more money? Are you high?"
i know!! they tried that crap with me and i said im not waiting a week for your f*** up and walked out. then called htc and they took care of everything because im still under warranty. dont deal with money hungry salesman holding phones hostage for $15 a month.
but i used the same technique as you except i put rubbing alchohol on the swab to clean the contact better. *dont use a jack ass amount of alcohol though*

Well that didn't work. I'm sure there's a short in the electrical system. The battery drains like water through a colander ever since this problem showed up.
But I think the short is internal and not right at the plug. (Which is odd because if I plug in a headset it works fine. I just don't want to carry a headset with me wherever I go.)
The best solution I've found so far is just to turn off the "Display headset icon" in the cyanogen settings so I don't have to look at the damned think blinking, then just use my phone as a text only device until the new one comes on Thursday.
yeah but it sucks that your battery is draining still..but im sure you can tough it out till tomorow

It's torture!
Absolute torture! The CIA should realize they don't have to water board terrorists because of this. They can just take away half the functionality of their smart phones!
I mean it! I'll talk! I'll say whatever they want me to say! Just make my phone work!
Or...send me another borked one. I'm good with that too because I'll trade it as an even exchange for a 4G Slide, give it to my wife, and upgrade her account with a Sensation that I will take.
I think the thing that annoys me is that the one that just broke has the good emmc chip and the good screen. But this random stupid problem. Now I have to play the "Do you get what you paid for or do you get garbage parts" lottery again. And even if I get the good parts I can never rely on the device again because it's reputation is killed with me.
Update: And i came in 50/50 in the new phone lottery. Bad screen but good chip.

Well when you put it in perspective like that I just sound whiny.
I've had my RAZR M for about 2 months now, so far, its been a fantastic phone!
Over the past few weeks, the earpiece speaker quality has been degrading, up to the point now where its got a severe buzz to it, almost like the speaker is blown. I have to turn the volume down when making calls just to hear the person on the other end clearly without distortion.
Anyone else have this problem? Is the speaker available anywhere as a replacement item? I'd rather not go through the hassle of getting it repaired/replaced by Verizon (I hear they give refurbished phones as replacements, right?).
Thanks!
Sorry I didn't see this post before,
Yes I have the same issue, exactly!
Been meaning to take it in to have it looked at but haven't yet, have you done anything about it yet?
I used to be able to tap the back of the phone with my hand to get it cleared up but even that isn't working any more.
Ha ha... I had this same issue on a straight out the box M... which also made me get a replacement which also got me root and an unlocked boot loader... I knew I wasn't unmoral and had some values................

Mine got so bad last week that I took it back to Verizon.... Told the rep what the problem was and he just put in the order for replacement..... Never even cared to listen to it. I know it's a reconditioned one but it only has to get me to October for my upgrade.
Hello there
I opened up my new nexus in hopes of fixing the issue of its speaker. Its top speaker doesnot work. It is 32 GB version. I didnot realise it until I read the manual by chance and found out that it has two speakers. One on top (not working for me) and one on bottom.
Its easy to open. Just put your nail between the gap you see between the behind lid and screen and move your nail all the way around the circumference and it will slowly come out. DONOT PULL IT OR YANK IT. Just be easy about it.
After opening, I tried pressing the speaker connections and moved it a bit and nothing happened
All the wires were fixed and all the parts seemed fine.
I wish I could return it and get a new one but I got it from US (Best Buy) and shipped it to the UK.
I am sure this is a hardware issue and I am not happy with Asus with its make. Quality check should have been much better for these devices !
I hope people might find it easy to open if they like to. One interesting fact is Asus hasnot said anything about opening the lid of Nexus so you are good to go!
EDIT
The Teardown by Ifixit
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+7+2nd+Generation+Teardown/16072/1
Can anyone tell me what exactly can i do to see if it is speakers problem or wiring flux ?
EDIT 2 : FIXED
Well, I ended up fixing it without doing really anything. Someone told me it could be flux and I checked later the both speakers were fine but one was not working. This meant that there was some problem with my wiring and maybe flux. I was worried that maybe if I open it myself again, I might not able to return it for claim as ASUS had referred me to their official distributor after I gave feedback to Asustek.
So I just did some heavy gaming which made my Nexus a bit hot and I waited for a while and when I turned on the speakers again while playing music (they were off while playing game), they started to work just fine. However, I tried heavy gaming before too when I got it in August but I think you need to be a bit patient. I am very grateful for everyone who chipped in to help.

Sorry to hear that. My only advice is to avoid being an early adopter when QC is a low priority for all these large tech companies, especially when you have to order one from overseas. I hope you have a friend that can help you or another way to return it.

Thank you so much for your concern mate. I know you talk wisdom here but I guess its fine. Its just speakers which I rarely use. I prefer headphones and that won't be a problem, however, I paid good money for it so I would have loved to get a full working piece. I will ask a friend n see what happens but then she be staying in States from September till November
I will check with local stores and Asus n see what happens.
That's too bad bro. Maybe contact a tablet/phone shop that fixes things. Maybe they can order you the part and you can install it or have them do it. I know it's not the ideal option but this way you can keep your device with you. If they can't order it now I'm sure that the speaker replacement parts will be out soon. Cheers

You have international warranty.
Where are you located? . U don't need to send it back to USA.
Just wondering. Is the connection the same on both speakers? Is it possible to swap them to see if the header or the speaker is the issue? If its just a speaker you might be able to order a new one?

I believe the speakers are soldered in and not unplugable, the asus N7 2013 uses a poly prophelyene. silicone type of speaker. their really really durable. one I opened before exchange looked like it had too much flux on the braided terminals, if you have a soler iron handy. say around 25 watts or less, reheat the wires a little, this should rebond them and clear some of the excess flux. the problem is when they mass solder these things the wires bond but the flux is so much it dosent burn off and the wire looks bonded but never carries a connection. I bet if you reheated those wires it would be fixed, another way to test just get a spare speaker like a junk headset. from the dollar srore, strip the wire and touch the pos and negative aka earth in uk speak. terminals to the speaker terminals if you get sound you know its a bad connection. You should have a warranty since asus is a international company as said. lastly, don't you have a future shop or bestbuy in the UK?
Thank you all of you mates for your help and suggestions.

I had a bad experience with repair techs and they already screwed my phones in the past. I am not taking the risk again. Moreover, I am not thinking about installing them myself. It's just risky and it will void my warranty. I have a year so I want to keep my options opened.

No, the speakers are fixed and they are not interchangeable either. Both of them have different shape and it just is sad that I couldnot realise it before that it wasnot the full volume I am hearing. I didnot expect the sound problem at all or I would have claimed it then and there.

You are very right about the speakers being soldered. I am just being tentative about doing anything about it right now. I just got it a two days ago. I know I have a year before the warranty expires so I think it would not be that bad to wait a bit and use it. The reason is that I know I can not get the new Nexus for a while so just wait till it's available in the local market and then I might do something about it too myself. We do have bestbuy here.
Suppose Asus doesnot do anything for me, which is highly unlikely, then I might open it up once again and try to reheat the wires.
By the way, do you know where exactly would I heat it ? Any specific location?
Cheers once again

Well that is very promising. Thank you so much both of you. I wouldnot open it myself or anything now. Use it until it is released here and then I will claim for warranty.

No, the speakers are fixed and they are not interchangeable either. Both of them have different shape and it just is sad that I couldnot realise it before that it wasnot the full volume I am hearing. I didnot expect the sound problem at all or I would have claimed it then and there.

That's a good tear down video. If you watch you can see him remove the speakers. You have to pull a small 2 wire clip off for each speaker. They look the same for top and bottom. Personally if it were me I would test the speakers before I got the soldering iron out.

Well i sent copy of receipt to Europe(requested on their website ) . And they honor the warranty without any questions. Put in original box (purchased In usa) and 10 days later they fix it. changed screen and fix the speakers.
They even paid for stamps, 2 ways.
Now I have a good working tablet.

Cheers

Just wondering. Is the connection the same on both speakers? Is it possible to swap them to see if the header or the speaker is the issue? If its just a speaker you might be able to order a new one?

I had similar problem when I got my nexus (2012) 7. Imported from us to hong Kong.
Asus honored the warranty (i didn't tell them I got it in the us) when it finally was released in hong Kong.
So, if you don't want to take it back, you can wait till it is released in uk.

Thank you all for your help and advice . All advice given to me is very much appreciated.
I ended up fixing it myself. The best part is that I do not had to give it to ASUS distributor even for warranty claim. However, when I contacted Asus they gave me full assurance on doing best for me and referred me to their distributor in my city when I told them I do not wish to ship it.
Well, it turned out the both speakers were fine and it only need some heat to work flawlessly. Some heavy gaming did that I am not sure it it happened today after playing shadowgun for about half an hour or sometime back with Asphalt 8 or maybe Nova 3
It heats up quickly if you are doing heavy gaming and that just made the circuit just fine.
Speaker not working, my advice, do some heavy gaming and be patient for a while
I tried this trick back in August but it didnot help then and later I had been busy with my exams and now just back on gaming
Was wondering if I'm the only one experiencing this or help on figuring it out.
Basically I have an Verizon LG G2 and lately plugin in headphones and even my car auxiliary cord in my car sometimes don't read or gets detected in my phone. At times it does detect and would lose the detection.. I don't understand if its hardware issue or what to be exactly the cause.. I assume it was ROM issue but I switch from Stock to Android 4.2.2 CM 11 Roms and issue remains the same.
Any help on this ?

My earphone jack has so far been 100% detected. (I only use earphones though, haven't tried vehicle aux.

Mine would detect if lucky lately than lose it or just not detect it at all. An issue since I use my headphone constantly..

Blow it out with some air. Worth a shot. No issue so far hear. There is another thread related to this, but with stuck detection...
Have experienced this as well using Auxiliary in the car. About 50% of the time plugging in doesn't get registered. Also not sure if its related, but after using the headphone jack I'll have a call where someone can't hear what i'm saying until I put it on speakerphone.
Headphone jack issues are exactly why I'm getting a replacement. For me, the problem is that the internal springs within the jack are either weak or damaged. Just the slightest touch causes the headphones to stop working and the speakerphone to engage. It's an extremely annoying problem.

I experience the Can't hear me thru the the phone mic but speakerphone issue once , but that corrected itself when I switch ROM and haven't gotten that again.
The auxiliary registering is something I'm hoping can be resolve without getting a replacement

any fix for this? I lose connection all the time, wasn't an issue because i used separate media player, but iv started using the g2 more and its f-kin maddening!
its most likely the connection inside but I have as hoping it was software....in don't want a refurbished phone...
Mine's doing it too....after googling a bit, it appears to be a very common problem/manufacturing defect.
UPDATE:
I originally didnt think I would be eligible for warranty since I bought my phone 2nd hand off ebay but I figured I'd go into Verizon and give it a shot anyway. The headphone jack was only 30 bucks but from the looks of the repair guide, it looked like a real pain in the butt.
So I just walked into Verizon today and explained my problem. The Verizon rep verified the prob and looked up my account. I was waiting for him to ask me if I bought it from Verizon but he never did. After 10 min he told me the phone is still under warranty and my replacement would be mailed to my house, completely FREE of charge, in a week!
It was much easier than anticipated! Y'all should do the same!

See my previous post. I believe they're sending me a brand new phone since its a warranty issue covered by LG and not a Verizon or insurance issue.
The prob is physical having to do with the spring that locks the male headphine jack into place.
As i said, you should try bringing it in to your carrier and see if they can do a warranty claim for you.
If you're insistent on fixing it yourself here's the part (this is for VS980, make sure you get the correct model for yohr ohone)

I have the same issue, but when I took it to the Verizon store they said they would not honor the warranty due to it being "customer provided equipment". I purchased it through Verizon, activated it on another line, then switched to my main line to keep my unlimited data. But I also don't have insurance on my line. Guess I'm out of luck unless I send it off to LG.

Thats BS...they must have thought you meant the actual heaphones.
Headphones = customer provided equipment
Headphone jack = physically attached inside of phone = NOT customer provided equipment.
Ask the verizon (or whatever carrier) to use his own heaphones and see if it works. That being said, you should double check with a second pair of headphones to duplicate problem to make sure it isnt yohr actual headphones.
Whether or not you have phone insurance is irrelevant. As long as a year hasnt passed since the G2 has been released, its covered under LG's warranty not tge carrier or the insurance company. The carrier rep you spoke with is an idiot

It's not my headphones. It's a known issue with the G2. Headphone indicator goes from connected to disconnected back to connected with the slightest movement or pressure, and it's very annoying.
Apparently, according to the in-store rep I spoke with, it's Verizon policy (and most other carriers) to not honor warranties on customer-provided equipment. Even if the manufacturer's warranty is still valid. And anytime you activate a phone that you didn't just buy from the carrier on a line, it's considered customer provided equipment. Even if you just switched it from another line you own. Even if you switch it back to that line you purchased the phone on. No more warranty. I asked and got that clarified.
