Samsung Keyboard vs Swiftkey - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I have been having this problem as of late with Swiftkey (mainly after update to MDL) switching back to the factory Samsung keyboard. So I gave in and noticed that I actually get less lag and issues with the Samsung Keyboard. In fact my Quadrant scores have increased since I just use the Samsung keyboard.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just my imagination?

I use the release version of Swype and I've noticed it automatically switching back to the Samsung keyboard once in awhile too. Ended up finally deleting the Samsung keyboard. Never noticed any lag or issues with Swype though.

I'm using SwiftKey and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

I use the Kii keyboard
Love the 90s Good Times.

I've been using Swiftkey since the phone came out, and on all my other devices, haven't had a single issue or loss of any performance whatsoever!

The stock keyboard is SwiftKey but designed different for this phone. I love the stock layout but I cannot type on it whatsoever. I don't know if it's the smaller keys or what, I also have a very difficult time hitting the space bar on the stock keyboard or swype. So I use the SwiftKey keyboard from the Play Store.

I just noticed that with swift key I'm getting Quadrant scores of 126xx and with the stock android I'm getting Quadrant scores of 130xx. Not a huge jump or anything really writing home about I just didn't know if the Samsung keyboard was optimized for a lower memory foot print or if there was something else going on. I realize that the S4 comes with stock (based of swiftkey) and Swype, but I could download the already purchased swiftkey from the store and that had some of the features I liked (learning).
Like I said, nothing big I was just curious about that little jump in score.

Hello, Sorry if I post at the wrong place. Currently having swiftkey keyboard installed, however, even though it's setup to be the default keyboard, samsung keyboard being put back to default keyboard. anyone had this issue? thanks

Perhaps try un-installing the Samsung keyboard or install the Google keyboard as well. I have the Samsung keyboard installed as well as SwiftKey and the Google keyboard installed and SwiftKey serves as my default keyboard just fine right now. Try switching it back and forth a few times to see if that helps.

isn't Samsungs keyboard licensing SwiftKey?

Funny you said that... I had to freeze the Samsung KB in TB to keep it from constantly taking over as default from Swype.

Yes, they have a partnership going on for the GS4, but I still find Samsung's keyboard annoying as hell. Inserting common punctuations like comma or period is much longer in terms of the process. However, yes the predictive word is licensed.

Just picked up the Tab 10.1 at Local Best Buy

I just picked up the SGT 10.1 and on the road now setting up. I have the Xoom and comparing it to the Tab, the Tab has this very lagging keyboard. Actually so bad that it will not keep up to your typing. Not liking that part. The other so far I like the design. Still need to test as I still can take both back.
I read a possible fix for the typing lag is to disable haptic feedback.
I use thumb keyboard. I had a xoom and a transformer and I know the keyboard lag you speak of.. I was expecting it on my Tab also but honestly I've not experienced any yet using thumb keyboard. I'm sure I will at some point but yeah...nothing yet.
I can confirm that haptic does indee caus the lag and that Thumbkeyboard is the way to go.

I disabled haptic feedback and so far no luck. I really like the Tab more than the Xoom so far. Still testing out.
The typing lag is horrid. It didnthappen on the I/o version I had.

OK will give that a try. It is pretty weird to have this lag
OK I switched to Dolphin HD browser and the lag is less, bt not what I want. Still haven't installed the thumb keyboard. Will have to download from market place.

Have you guys tried using a launcher like Launcher Pro?
This is an issue over at the TF forums too. It's up to Google to fix it, not Samsung.
yes hopefully it gets fixed quickly. Xoom works great without any lag. Everything else is great on the SGT 10.1. At least I have 45 days to return the SGt 10 if I can't get the regular keyboard to work.
Had a xoom before and experienced this, but so far on the galaxy tab I haven't had any issues like that at all. I've been using thumb keyboard and dolphin since I bought it Friday though, since there's no quick controls and I got tired of doing about:config on the zoom.

Probably premier silver for extended return.
Yes premier silver, comes in handy.
By the way, after installing Dolphin HD browser and rebooting I'm not having hardly if any lag anymore. Hope that it stays this way. Haven't tried the stock browser.
am using a 10.1v.
no lag for me using either the stock or thumb keyboard...
hmm...
OS is still at 3.0 though...
So this is a test to check the lag or lack thereof with the Dolphin browser...and I can agree...little or no lag at all.
No lag at all in mine using stock android keyboard.

Swype - I used to love you

Hi! Is it just me or has swype become almost unuseable since a few ROMs back when it went from popping a box up to horizontal suggestions above the keyboard.
I'm not talking about the aesthetics, it seems as though the dictionary selection, accuracy and changing of half typed and corrected words is just terrible.
Prior to the update I used to breeze through, now I'm lucky to swype in a few words without an epic correction struggle against its will to correct and change.
Swype, once a selling point and a joy to use now just plain sucks for me, and the thought of using it turns me off productive tasks.
Just me? Bad settings? I look forward to peoples input. I can't exactly remember when the change occurred, it was when it went horizontal instead of pop up.

no problem here, actually I feel Swype 3 to be better than 2, fast, accurate and reliable.
Feel the same, maybe I swipe too fast, had to correct three times inn the first eight words

I don't intend to hijack, but I couldn't have an android phone without Swiftkey X on it... only complaint is that I have to use the gmail app for my email instead of the Samsung email one because it is very buggy on the Samsung one....
Same here. Old swype was more accurate.
I did two things:
1) Remove swype that comes with the rom, install the beta from swype.com (its newer)
2) Disable autocorrect
I absolutely love the new one. Much better than before and just as accurate.
The new Swype rocks! Especially with the horizontal word choice window. I can't even consider going back to 2.7. No problems with accuracy whatsoever with the new version on my phone.
It's not just me! Latest Cognition 1.50 just released and Swype has been reverted to 2.x, Designgears said the following:
"I think the new versions suck too, it is no even usable anymore, I can type my message 3x faster with the stock samsung keyboard."
/dance!!!

Quit the bull - if you didn't mean to hijack, why are you doing it? Is this an accidental hijack? Jerk.
On topic - never been a huge Swype fan, but been playing with it a bit this weekend - and I concur with those that say the new version is hopeless.
Still a noob with it, but my accuracy was much, much better on the old version.
Not sure I'll stay with Swype anyway - old dog, new tricks....
Make sure you check your Swype accuracy settings. I put mine closer towards the error tolerance end now. Still works fine.

I don't like it that much, have to swipe twice/thrice for a simple word like 'or'. I used T9 Trace on my S8500 before and it never had any problem, even if I swiped on some wrong letters it ultimately gave me the right word.
I am on 2.72 version, at default setting.
Regards.
Yep same here. Spent more time struggling with auto-correction than actually swyping.
I use TouchPal's keyboard now. Surprisingly accurate even when you mash the wrong buttons, high degree of customisability (you can even use the classic numpad keyboard), and they will also be implementing the swyping functionality in the next major release (hopefully more usable than the current version of Swype).
I've found, disabling auto correction helps a million.

I absolutely agree with every word you said. Please if someone can tell me a way of downgrading to an older version, i will be ever grateful. Its terrible now!!
from my perspective.. swype 3 is better than swype 2 .. well the horizontal word suggestions eats up a line, but in exchange it's easier to scroll down (or right ) for the words.. it's true that it's not perfect when selecting words.. but overall.. it's still the best keyboard...

How do you disable Auto Correction? Can't find it in settings!
Swype 3 beta says you can't install it on a phone that was shipped with swype pre installed. Anyway to get the new 3 beta of swype on official firmware?
Is there any way to downgrade though?

Issues With Smart Keyboard Pro

Hi Guys,
Just got my S4 on Saturday, and I've been messing around with it, trying to get it set up in the way I like, and I'm enjoying it so far!
One issue I'm having, however, is with Smart Keyboard Pro. I've used this on all my previous Android phones are really enjoyed using it, but for some reason, it now seems to be missing letters, almost as if it's lagging behind somewhat. I've installed Swiftkey and this seems to work fine, as does the stock keyboard, but I much prefer to use SKP.
I initially thought it could be to do with AirView, but I've turned that off now and i'm still having the same problem...
Anyone else had this?

I've used SKP on the SII, SIII and now SIV (i9505) too and haven't noticed anything untoward with it ...
I used it on my S2 too, under various ROMs, ICS, JB... was brilliant! I've switched to swiftkey for the moment, i seemed to be having issues with the space bar... Might just be me but I've never had it before! I can't deal with the puncuation on swiftkey thought...

What 3rd party keyboard are you using?

I'm just wondering what keyboard everyone is using. The only reason I'm curious is because my favorite keyboard which is Swift Key doesn't work to well with the Edge display. The keys that are on the edges sit on the edge part of the display making them easy to miss.

i disagree. i use swiftkey also, and my keys on the edge work just fine. i haven't had a single problem with them. also, for some reason, swiftkey's predcitive type has really gone downhill in the last year. it use to be spot on, and now it seems to mess up many words i type. but it is still my preferred until some other keyboard can show me a reason to switch.
I'm still using Swiftkey, and have no problems with the keys that are on the Edge.
I came from a BlackBerry Z30, so I use the BlackBerry keyboard. Personally I think BlackBerry hs always had the best keyboards, and I swore I'd never use a virtual keyboard...until I used theirs. I've tried a few other VKBs, but nothing comes close to BlackBerry. I know this is a totally subjective topic, BTW.

Maybe I'll give it another shot. I just remember hitting the #2 every time I tried hitting the #1. Maybe it was because it was my first day with the phone and I was still getting used to the whole edge thing.

SwiftKey. Works fine for me.

I also have the same issue with SwiftKey - keep pressing the wrong keys when they are ont he edge. Perhaps it depends on OS firmware or version? I have Exynos S7 Edge 935F, with XXU1APC8 firmware. It is very annoying and I see lots of mistakes when i type now - ive been a 2 years swiftkey user with S5 - no issues there.
Using swiftkey for now. Haven't had any issues so far with the keys on the curved edges.

I wouldn't disable it. I'm not sure how disabling it in settings compares to freezing it in Titanium backup, but on the GS3, if the OEM keyboard frozen or deleted, you could run into problems after a reboot, because the phone looked for the OEM keyboard to enter the password or pin the first time around. I don't know that the S7 works the same way, but I doubt it's using any signficant amount of memory or battery so I wouldn't take the chance.
I prefer swiping, the default Samsung keyboard just isn't accurate enough for me so I use Swype which I've found to be the most accurate

Yeah seems to be an issue for me as well, the keyboard animation doesn't seem to keep up with my typing speed, I am a very fast typer, but this was never an issue with my old htc one m8, I have tried the stock as well as SwiftKey. Might try the Google keyboard even though I am not a fan of it, but it might be the only keyboard that can keep up with my typing speed.
And yeah, as expected the Google keyboard doesn't lag at all when typing really fast.

Not for me though, Google keyboard doesn't lag at all, animations sound typing etc is all on point with my typing speed, I typically go crazy on a new keyboard and type out a sentence really fast to test this, Google keyboard is the only one that has kept up.
But yeah I agree the fact that other keyboards lag is disconcerting, but it might be a problem with the keyboards and the apps themselves rather than Samsung hardware.

Figured it out thanks to a mac forum!
It was happening because I switched to condensed mode display. As soon as I reverted to standard display settings, the lag has disappeared.
Thanks for the input.
I have had this lag ever since I bought the device. On Google keyboard and all others that I have tried. No change when I switched over to condensed mode. When comparing it to the smoothness of my old z2, it is a joke.

I had lag on the Samsung keyboard from day 1. Switched to Google keyboard helped. Have noticed no difference when I switched to condensed a few weeks ago. To see the fluidity in my old z2 is frustrating. Should have listened to my own advice and never bought a cr*psung.
