Hi Guys,
Just got my S4 on Saturday, and I've been messing around with it, trying to get it set up in the way I like, and I'm enjoying it so far!
One issue I'm having, however, is with Smart Keyboard Pro. I've used this on all my previous Android phones are really enjoyed using it, but for some reason, it now seems to be missing letters, almost as if it's lagging behind somewhat. I've installed Swiftkey and this seems to work fine, as does the stock keyboard, but I much prefer to use SKP.
I initially thought it could be to do with AirView, but I've turned that off now and i'm still having the same problem...
Anyone else had this?

I've used SKP on the SII, SIII and now SIV (i9505) too and haven't noticed anything untoward with it ...
I used it on my S2 too, under various ROMs, ICS, JB... was brilliant! I've switched to swiftkey for the moment, i seemed to be having issues with the space bar... Might just be me but I've never had it before! I can't deal with the puncuation on swiftkey thought...
The stock keyboard is SwiftKey too I believe?

I am having the exact same issue. I first thought it was a touch screen problem but then noticed, as you did, that it's unique to Smart Keyboard. Any updates?

No luck I'm afraid, I didn't get anywhere with it so made the switch to SwiftKey. Quite like it now I'm getting used to the layout!

Ok my fellow nexus one lovers... I had a Nexus one for about a month, and upon first opening the phone, there was dust, so I immediately got a replacement. I thought it was cool that next day when I show up at work, they had sent me my replacement so I was quite suprised on the service. Anyways, the phone was great, loved every aspect EXCEPT when texting, it wouldn't register my delete, and instead, a stupid smiley... in a way, I was getting pissed cause google was "smiling" at me when I was trying to do something else.
So my question is, I really want to go back, or wait for the HD2, but I feel the nexus is a better fit, especially when I use almost all the google features... but the texting/screen issue is a factor... I know people all over have this issue, and there isn't a resolution yet (that I've found) so what do I do? Wait? Suck it up and get it again? What are your suggestions???

It took me 3 phones to get all my issues fixed. If you're worried about fast customer service, get a phone that is supported directly by a carrier (Mytouch3g, droid, etc).
I have a good friend who just got a droid after being a huge crackberry fan. He loves it.
The nexus one is a pilot program so there will be growing pains to endure.
In terms of the touch issues watch your other fingers around the edge of the touch screen. I notice whenever my screen goes wonky a finger that shouldn't be touching the screen is.
Keep in mind you can get other keyboards than the stock that are agruably better anyway.
Good luck and thanks for supporting Android.
Didnt realize you were talking about screen issues, since using Cyanogen I havent expierenced them, but I dont know if they've been fixed for regular users.
hmm I didn't pay any attention to it after I rooted/flashed cyanogen... guess I'm going to have to think about this one a little bit. but overall I loved it. Do you guys think it will be fixed.... someday?
Well its an issue that theyve been made well aware of on their support forums so I would assume theyre working on a solution, I dont know why they wouldnt be.
just curious, but are you using the stock keyboard?
No, im using better keyboard right now and use smart keyboard and swype from time to time, just like to mix things up every once in a while, I type so fast on this thing now that smart keyboard and better keyboard have pretty much made swype useless to me. Smart Keyboard is free in the market and Better Keyboard is like 2 bucks and is pretty similar but is theme-able which I like. I also dont use auto correct or suggestions or any of that stuff so I dont know how they work for those.

Smart Keyboard and Better Keyboard are really just the stock keyboard with minor differences and more customization (but nothing innovational), if you really want to enjoy your typing experience - I suggest installing the HTC_IME, the typing creation cooked up by HTC for their Sense UI phones.
Nothing really beats it, I don't see how anything could. Swype though, is lovely.
I still feel like I type faster on smart or better keyboard, it could be I just havent gotten used to HTC IME yet, i used it all the time on my mytouch but ive just gotten so use to these keyboards that I dont even have to look to type, like typing this whole thing for example. I guess in the end its all just personal preference.
whats the "htc ime" ? link? seems interesting

Seriously I never tried it before the note and I find it far quicker and more accurate to type, really impressed.
And definitely wouldnt use another keyboard now that didnt work by tracing out the word.

Yea. I used swype on my HD2.
I mean I could go back, but Swype is so much quicker and easier.
I like Swype!
I've tried Swype a few times but I can't get the feel of it at all so never use it. Trying the ics keyboard now and finding it's a bit better at auto correcting spaces which is handy.
Swype rules.
S-pen toggle ICS keyboard
love this ICS keyboard layout (having such a small space bar on others just pisses me off), but is there any way to add the Pen input for it on the SGN? kinda defeats the purpose of it on this handset if you can't use it.

Swype is by far the best. It's so easy and simple and forgiving. I barely even hit my intended letters and it almost always knows what I'm typing. The idea of taping out messages or emails seems archaic now. Especially with the s-pen....it's just such an effortless pleasure.
Takes a day, max. That being said, is love to be able to use Swype on the ics keyboard.

I tried the keyboad but have no comment as of now. Why? Because it still lags just like the previous other keyboards I've tried, if your a fast texter like myself the phone is slow & cannot catch up which leads to mistakes in EVERY word I write, it's a nightmare...
I hope they fix this issue in the next update.
Currently using ''smart keyboard pro'' which I think is one of the BEST keyboards, also being VERY customizable & comes with several great skins, all of which are great in their own way, even the colours you can change...
I think the note will be FAR superior once it gets the ice cream update and will be even smoother and faster than what it already is.
I found it initially lagged but after turning off most of the features it works OK now aside from occasional lags which I assume is due to some other application slowing it down. Its auto correct can be intermittent but I have it turned down as I don't want it too aggressive
So I have been having this problem as of late with Swiftkey (mainly after update to MDL) switching back to the factory Samsung keyboard. So I gave in and noticed that I actually get less lag and issues with the Samsung Keyboard. In fact my Quadrant scores have increased since I just use the Samsung keyboard.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just my imagination?

I use the release version of Swype and I've noticed it automatically switching back to the Samsung keyboard once in awhile too. Ended up finally deleting the Samsung keyboard. Never noticed any lag or issues with Swype though.

The stock keyboard is SwiftKey but designed different for this phone. I love the stock layout but I cannot type on it whatsoever. I don't know if it's the smaller keys or what, I also have a very difficult time hitting the space bar on the stock keyboard or swype. So I use the SwiftKey keyboard from the Play Store.

I just noticed that with swift key I'm getting Quadrant scores of 126xx and with the stock android I'm getting Quadrant scores of 130xx. Not a huge jump or anything really writing home about I just didn't know if the Samsung keyboard was optimized for a lower memory foot print or if there was something else going on. I realize that the S4 comes with stock (based of swiftkey) and Swype, but I could download the already purchased swiftkey from the store and that had some of the features I liked (learning).
Like I said, nothing big I was just curious about that little jump in score.

Perhaps try un-installing the Samsung keyboard or install the Google keyboard as well. I have the Samsung keyboard installed as well as SwiftKey and the Google keyboard installed and SwiftKey serves as my default keyboard just fine right now. Try switching it back and forth a few times to see if that helps.
isn't Samsungs keyboard licensing SwiftKey?

Yes, they have a partnership going on for the GS4, but I still find Samsung's keyboard annoying as hell. Inserting common punctuations like comma or period is much longer in terms of the process. However, yes the predictive word is licensed.
I'm just wondering what keyboard everyone is using. The only reason I'm curious is because my favorite keyboard which is Swift Key doesn't work to well with the Edge display. The keys that are on the edges sit on the edge part of the display making them easy to miss.

i disagree. i use swiftkey also, and my keys on the edge work just fine. i haven't had a single problem with them. also, for some reason, swiftkey's predcitive type has really gone downhill in the last year. it use to be spot on, and now it seems to mess up many words i type. but it is still my preferred until some other keyboard can show me a reason to switch.
I'm still using Swiftkey, and have no problems with the keys that are on the Edge.
I came from a BlackBerry Z30, so I use the BlackBerry keyboard. Personally I think BlackBerry hs always had the best keyboards, and I swore I'd never use a virtual keyboard...until I used theirs. I've tried a few other VKBs, but nothing comes close to BlackBerry. I know this is a totally subjective topic, BTW.

Maybe I'll give it another shot. I just remember hitting the #2 every time I tried hitting the #1. Maybe it was because it was my first day with the phone and I was still getting used to the whole edge thing.

I also have the same issue with SwiftKey - keep pressing the wrong keys when they are ont he edge. Perhaps it depends on OS firmware or version? I have Exynos S7 Edge 935F, with XXU1APC8 firmware. It is very annoying and I see lots of mistakes when i type now - ive been a 2 years swiftkey user with S5 - no issues there.
Using swiftkey for now. Haven't had any issues so far with the keys on the curved edges.

Those of you using a 3rd party keyboard, did you disable the package for the Samsung Keyboard? I notice that it's still running even though it's disabled and not in use.

I wouldn't disable it. I'm not sure how disabling it in settings compares to freezing it in Titanium backup, but on the GS3, if the OEM keyboard frozen or deleted, you could run into problems after a reboot, because the phone looked for the OEM keyboard to enter the password or pin the first time around. I don't know that the S7 works the same way, but I doubt it's using any signficant amount of memory or battery so I wouldn't take the chance.
I prefer swiping, the default Samsung keyboard just isn't accurate enough for me so I use Swype which I've found to be the most accurate

Yeah seems to be an issue for me as well, the keyboard animation doesn't seem to keep up with my typing speed, I am a very fast typer, but this was never an issue with my old htc one m8, I have tried the stock as well as SwiftKey. Might try the Google keyboard even though I am not a fan of it, but it might be the only keyboard that can keep up with my typing speed.
And yeah, as expected the Google keyboard doesn't lag at all when typing really fast.

Not for me though, Google keyboard doesn't lag at all, animations sound typing etc is all on point with my typing speed, I typically go crazy on a new keyboard and type out a sentence really fast to test this, Google keyboard is the only one that has kept up.
But yeah I agree the fact that other keyboards lag is disconcerting, but it might be a problem with the keyboards and the apps themselves rather than Samsung hardware.

Figured it out thanks to a mac forum!
It was happening because I switched to condensed mode display. As soon as I reverted to standard display settings, the lag has disappeared.
Thanks for the input.
I have had this lag ever since I bought the device. On Google keyboard and all others that I have tried. No change when I switched over to condensed mode. When comparing it to the smoothness of my old z2, it is a joke.

I had lag on the Samsung keyboard from day 1. Switched to Google keyboard helped. Have noticed no difference when I switched to condensed a few weeks ago. To see the fluidity in my old z2 is frustrating. Should have listened to my own advice and never bought a cr*psung.
