I just picked up the SGT 10.1 and on the road now setting up. I have the Xoom and comparing it to the Tab, the Tab has this very lagging keyboard. Actually so bad that it will not keep up to your typing. Not liking that part. The other so far I like the design. Still need to test as I still can take both back.
I read a possible fix for the typing lag is to disable haptic feedback.
I use thumb keyboard. I had a xoom and a transformer and I know the keyboard lag you speak of.. I was expecting it on my Tab also but honestly I've not experienced any yet using thumb keyboard. I'm sure I will at some point but yeah...nothing yet.
I can confirm that haptic does indee caus the lag and that Thumbkeyboard is the way to go.

I disabled haptic feedback and so far no luck. I really like the Tab more than the Xoom so far. Still testing out.
The typing lag is horrid. It didnthappen on the I/o version I had.

OK will give that a try. It is pretty weird to have this lag
OK I switched to Dolphin HD browser and the lag is less, bt not what I want. Still haven't installed the thumb keyboard. Will have to download from market place.

Its bad if not worse with the thumb keyboard
Have you guys tried using a launcher like Launcher Pro?
This is an issue over at the TF forums too. It's up to Google to fix it, not Samsung.
yes hopefully it gets fixed quickly. Xoom works great without any lag. Everything else is great on the SGT 10.1. At least I have 45 days to return the SGt 10 if I can't get the regular keyboard to work.
Had a xoom before and experienced this, but so far on the galaxy tab I haven't had any issues like that at all. I've been using thumb keyboard and dolphin since I bought it Friday though, since there's no quick controls and I got tired of doing about:config on the zoom.

Probably premier silver for extended return.
Yes premier silver, comes in handy.
By the way, after installing Dolphin HD browser and rebooting I'm not having hardly if any lag anymore. Hope that it stays this way. Haven't tried the stock browser.
am using a 10.1v.
no lag for me using either the stock or thumb keyboard...
hmm...
OS is still at 3.0 though...
So this is a test to check the lag or lack thereof with the Dolphin browser...and I can agree...little or no lag at all.
No lag at all in mine using stock android keyboard.

I've had 0 typing lag on either of the two I've had so far using thumb keyboard. I've had haptic feedback enabled from the start as well. Maybe you just got a bad tablet.

Is is just me, or is the text entry kind of pathetic on the browser of the tab
any desktop site, like.. Facebook , or XDA, typing lags always a second, so the words and letters typed will show up after you actually type, its not smooth at all...
*laughs hard*
I think there might have been a few discussions about this. Yeah, it's an issue. Dolphin or Opera Mini will work better.
So I think I may have a fix for this. I was digging around in the keyboard settings, and noticed that the Tab ships with "Samsung Keyboard" as the default. I switched mine back to the stock Android keyboard, and it's much better. Of course there are a bunch of replacement keyboards you can use as well, but the stock honeycomb keyboard seems much more responsive than the Samsung one.
So far the Android keyboard, Swiftkey, and Swype keyboards haven't made anything better for me.
I've seen some people say disabling OpenGL in the debug settings helps, but they also say it has some other performance side effects. So... I guess I'll be using Opera Mini for a while.
The Bookmarks widget though makes it real easy to use the stock browser bookmarks (synced from my desktop Chrome browser) real easy with Opera though, so I like that.
ya so far swype is tne worst. But problem ive been having is if i type too fast the keyboard suddenly closes and im constantly having to reopen it.... Its fuggin annoying.
I've been using thumb keyboard and no lag. Its able to keep up with me
i really don't think its keyboard related
I'm using stock hc keyboard
Divineblue try doing a quick reply here on ur tab and you'll see the lag
Its fine in Google search and mobile sites but just des on desktop sites like facebook etc
lag disappears in opera mini but its a slow loading browser and I can tell decreases page quality, also can't get facebook desktop to load, no user agent option
so the hc browser really sucks then and ia behind this text lag
Is this lag a general problem with HC? Do you guys think that it will be fixed?
I got this tab on friday I love it so far but this text entry lag is driving me insane.

I use the thumb keyboard and stock browser. It lags like crazy, no different than using any other keyboard.
Has this been reported to Google?
Because of this issue alone, I postponed my purchase of any Android tablet
Web browsing accounts the most for my usage pattern. And I really hate any slow down for doing it.
See if this is fixed in the upcoming Android 3.2 (if it made to GTab) ... or hopefully ICS.
Is it at all lack of power from the Tegra or is it a glitch./-/
I bet on problem with Android Honeycomb.
It is really strange if Tegra does not have enough power on this!
We have a lot of Tegra phones and they don't have this issue. Sure, this is different OS, but that should show about "power".
Probably we need to wait for Android tablet Honeycomb that does not using Tegra.
And see if the problem still there.

lol its definitely not the tegra 2. Its honeycomb, this one is all google's fault. Kind of sad that google brags about their browser being the fastest than other browser and yet the honeycomb browser can't even handle text entry.

is it only sometimes or does it happen all the time?
I "sometimes" get a keyboard lag when using the stock internet browser but when typing documents using Polaris Office I have absolutely no problems at all and it keeps up with my mediocre typing ability.
Using other browsers I havent had any lag so im not sure if its a bug with Honeycomb and if it is then it should be fixed in future updates so I wouldnt let any reports of keyboard lags affect your decision to buy the TF. There isnt another Tablet or laptop I would choose over this right now.
Hope this helps your decision making
Mark.
Meh
I only used Polaris a time or two to check it out and haven't found any issues with keyboard lag there. However, it's fairly common using the browser (take your pick which oe, they all seem to do it to me). There's also been occasions where I was not able to use the backspace key and had to reload the page to regain that functionality. It's lagging a bit as I type this right now. Having said that, it's not missing any key presses; there's just a small delay between typing and text appearing.
Having said that I would be mindful of the battery drain issues that the device experiences when docked. Leaving it docked as I imagine you'd be likely to do carryig it around for school, will take a noticable toll on your overall battery life.
The keyboard lag is an issue with the stock honeycomb browser and it happens with ALL text input (keyboard dock and onscreen keyboard as well). There is no lag in other apps such as Polaris Office or other browsers that are not based on the Webkit android browser. For example, Firefox and Opera browsers do not exhibit this same lag. Unfortunately, though, Firefox has its own couple of issues with the hardware keyboard on the Transformer. Mozilla actually has an open bug report about it, but apparently they don't have a device in house yet to test it. I use the Opera Mobile browser for now when posting on message boards.
not too bad
Ifyou use the keyboaard for writting docs andstuff like that you will feel no la. Sometimes if you are doing something like playing games that require good syncro you can feel the smal lag but is not too bad. After that the lag in the browser is something related to the browser itself I think.
As others have said, the lag issue really only affects web browsers.
The real question should be is this only a TF issue?
Evernote--which is probably the best app for taking and organizing your lecture notes--might be a better app for you than Polaris Office. Also, think about getting a keyboard app like Thumb Keyboard to go along with your TF. If you find yourself without the dock for some reason, you can still take notes accurately & quickly.

Yea. I used swype on my HD2.
I mean I could go back, but Swype is so much quicker and easier.
I like Swype!
I've tried Swype a few times but I can't get the feel of it at all so never use it. Trying the ics keyboard now and finding it's a bit better at auto correcting spaces which is handy.
Swype rules.
S-pen toggle ICS keyboard
love this ICS keyboard layout (having such a small space bar on others just pisses me off), but is there any way to add the Pen input for it on the SGN? kinda defeats the purpose of it on this handset if you can't use it.

Swype is by far the best. It's so easy and simple and forgiving. I barely even hit my intended letters and it almost always knows what I'm typing. The idea of taping out messages or emails seems archaic now. Especially with the s-pen....it's just such an effortless pleasure.
Takes a day, max. That being said, is love to be able to use Swype on the ics keyboard.

I tried the keyboad but have no comment as of now. Why? Because it still lags just like the previous other keyboards I've tried, if your a fast texter like myself the phone is slow & cannot catch up which leads to mistakes in EVERY word I write, it's a nightmare...
I hope they fix this issue in the next update.
Currently using ''smart keyboard pro'' which I think is one of the BEST keyboards, also being VERY customizable & comes with several great skins, all of which are great in their own way, even the colours you can change...
I think the note will be FAR superior once it gets the ice cream update and will be even smoother and faster than what it already is.
I found it initially lagged but after turning off most of the features it works OK now aside from occasional lags which I assume is due to some other application slowing it down. Its auto correct can be intermittent but I have it turned down as I don't want it too aggressive
Just got a new 10.1 yesterday and gave myself a day to see how much I like it. Speed is always a big deal for me. Im actually typing from the tab now. The keyboard isnt too bad, but I dont see a autocorrection so far, but have not looked into it. The speed of the Touchwiz and homescreens is much better than most had me believe. I dont have any lag between the tapping of the arrow and the animation to show the quick apps.
The tablet also came fully updated, as far as the tablet shows through the update wizard. I will eventually check up the dev section and make sure I have the latest update today or tomorrow. The touchscreen does show a bit of lag as far as drawing with the fingers but isnt too bad and rougly on course with the A100 from Acer, my previous tablet. Battery is also great, and came 50% charged when I bought it, and didnt drop below 40% for the 4 hours I had used it before throwing it on the charger and watching some youtube and netflix.
Anyways, that was a quick review, and I love the tablet as of right now, when I thought the Tw UX was going to be a pain, but hasshown to be opposite and not too bad.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks all forth replies. I havebthe thumb keyboard already, but don't need a new launcher or anything yet, since the stock is working perfect. The next next thing I'm waiting on is the ics update in the coming months. I do plan to root this soon, but won't use an ics Rom since I use the cameras often. I may throw Task or overcome on this instead while I wait. Overall a very good tablet, and the detail is amazing as far as the resolution and everything else goes.

So I have been having this problem as of late with Swiftkey (mainly after update to MDL) switching back to the factory Samsung keyboard. Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just my imagination?

I just noticed that with swift key I'm getting Quadrant scores of 126xx and with the stock android I'm getting Quadrant scores of 130xx. Not a huge jump or anything really writing home about I just didn't know if the Samsung keyboard was optimized for a lower memory foot print or if there was something else going on. I realize that the S4 comes with stock (based of swiftkey) and Swype, but I could download the already purchased swiftkey from the store and that had some of the features I liked (learning).
Like I said, nothing big I was just curious about that little jump in score.

Perhaps try un-installing the Samsung keyboard or install the Google keyboard as well. I have the Samsung keyboard installed as well as SwiftKey and the Google keyboard installed and SwiftKey serves as my default keyboard just fine right now. Try switching it back and forth a few times to see if that helps.

Yes, they have a partnership going on for the GS4, but I still find Samsung's keyboard annoying as hell. Inserting common punctuations like comma or period is much longer in terms of the process. However, yes the predictive word is licensed.
