[Q] is there keyboard lag on the dock? - Eee Pad Transformer General

I'm planning to get a transformer for school for note taking and such. I've noticed that some people said they've gotten keyboard lag when typing
Does anybody have keyboard lag and if you do.....would/ does it affect your time to finish typing up a report or anything?
Thanks

Yea. There's some lag. It doesn't affect me much. I wouldn't let this sway your decision on picking this bad boy up

is it only sometimes or does it happen all the time?

I "sometimes" get a keyboard lag when using the stock internet browser but when typing documents using Polaris Office I have absolutely no problems at all and it keeps up with my mediocre typing ability.
Using other browsers I havent had any lag so im not sure if its a bug with Honeycomb and if it is then it should be fixed in future updates so I wouldnt let any reports of keyboard lags affect your decision to buy the TF. There isnt another Tablet or laptop I would choose over this right now.
Hope this helps your decision making
Mark.

Meh
I only used Polaris a time or two to check it out and haven't found any issues with keyboard lag there. However, it's fairly common using the browser (take your pick which oe, they all seem to do it to me). There's also been occasions where I was not able to use the backspace key and had to reload the page to regain that functionality. It's lagging a bit as I type this right now. Having said that, it's not missing any key presses; there's just a small delay between typing and text appearing.
Having said that I would be mindful of the battery drain issues that the device experiences when docked. Leaving it docked as I imagine you'd be likely to do carryig it around for school, will take a noticable toll on your overall battery life.

The keyboard lag is an issue with the stock honeycomb browser and it happens with ALL text input (keyboard dock and onscreen keyboard as well). There is no lag in other apps such as Polaris Office or other browsers that are not based on the Webkit android browser. For example, Firefox and Opera browsers do not exhibit this same lag. Unfortunately, though, Firefox has its own couple of issues with the hardware keyboard on the Transformer. Mozilla actually has an open bug report about it, but apparently they don't have a device in house yet to test it. I use the Opera Mobile browser for now when posting on message boards.

not too bad
Ifyou use the keyboaard for writting docs andstuff like that you will feel no la. Sometimes if you are doing something like playing games that require good syncro you can feel the smal lag but is not too bad. After that the lag in the browser is something related to the browser itself I think.

As others have said, the lag issue really only affects web browsers.

The real question should be is this only a TF issue?

Evernote--which is probably the best app for taking and organizing your lecture notes--might be a better app for you than Polaris Office. Also, think about getting a keyboard app like Thumb Keyboard to go along with your TF. If you find yourself without the dock for some reason, you can still take notes accurately & quickly.

[Q] Keyboard Lagginess on display units

I just got home from Best Buy where I played with their Xoom for about 20 minutes. Anytime I tried to use the keyboard (in the browser or just doing the google search on the home page), the keyboard only registered like 1/5 keystrokes I made. The line "just testing out this new xoom" would come out as "j tesgo t ewom" or something like that. I watched as I was typing and it looked like the keys were lighting up. Is this just a bad display unit or does the keyboard really suck this bad?
Let me put it this way, I am typing this on my xoom almost as fast as I can type on a computer. It does get laggy in the browser on more complex sites, but it shouldn't lead to that much mispelling. The keyboard is at least as good as the ipad in terms of speed.

Best Buy has some crappy units on display for some reason. ANGRY BIRDS lagged when I used the one at Best Buy.

i find the keyboard quite laggy. I am typing this post in the quick reply box and am running about 1-2 keystrokes behind. And this is with stock or Thumb keyboard.

The xda forum makes the browser lag like crazy, probably because of all the elements that are on the page at once. Use the xda app instead.
Not sure, but as far as my personal experience goes, every single floor unit of any device I've tried is always slower than the real thing. With the amount of abuse that the devices get, and in the case of Android the people messing with things that they don't know the reason for make everything laggy.
I remember using the Galaxy Tab at a T-mobile kiosk and having it run pretty smooth, then trying one in a Sprint store than absolutely lagged out and crashed several times. It really depends what people have been doing to them.
Let me also +1 the Xoom soft-keyboard- between the responsiveness and accuracy of the touchscreen, the size of the keys, and the medium autocorrect setting, what used to be a chore typing on soft keyboards has now made sending E-mails FAR easier (which my client certainly appreciates, as now I respond to E-mails coming thru in late at night or early AM much faster ).
I found that when I went to bestbuy the display unit was terrible because everyone installed apps and put a ton of widgets on the desktop. When I actually got my own xoom it was perfect and never had any issue browsing or using the keyboard. So I guess the point I am trying to make is that its more what people put on it then the unit itself and when you have tons of people messing with it a lot of things get screwed up.

The unit at the best buy I was at didn't have a google account tied to the device. You couldn't use the market, gmail or any google application. So nobody put extra apps or widgets on there. Maybe they messed with the settings? All I know is the keyboard was horrible. It would enter a couple letters, miss a couple letters. Half way through typing something it would auto-close the keyboard. Something must have been messed up, I guess. Otherwise I assume everybody would be complaining, which they aren't. I just wish I could have tested the device with the keyboard working correctly so I knew what to actual expect since I'm still on the fence between this and the ipad 2.
Sorry but its not the store unit's fault. This is something ive noticed and subsequently been annoyed with using my Xoom. Usually its while im using the keyboard in the browser window. It just cant keep up and misses keystrokes. It wouldnt be so bad if the keystrokes were just behind, but it lags enough where it doesnt even register some keystrokes. but like i said this is mainly in the browser. Plus for the person who mention Angry birds, i noticed this myself. Which is something thats alway bothered me about Non-Apple(dont shoot me im not a fanboy) hardware/software. If there was one thing i never experienced on my iphone/ipad it was subsequent slowdown while using apps and such. Everything was as quick the first time as it was the last time. Slowdown to me is a major nusiance becuase it seems to happen in intervals as apposed to consistantly. i hate that. Sometimes AB is smooth as silk other times its choppy, but i never know why or when.
I have noticed the lag too. Not on all sites but some especially XDA.I have seen many others complain about the same thing in other posts. Obviously an issue that needs to be corrected by Google in an update.
I have yet to see any lag playing Angry Birds.

Interesting since the unit I messed with had a ton of stuff. The only time I have noticed some keyboard lag occasionally was in the web browser when on some intensive websites but other than that seems to be fine. As a note you could try out a different keyboard on it if they actually have a Google account such as swift key and see if that helps. Also id see if you can go to another store such as Verizon and test it out there since normally it works well without lag for me.
That is very strange, I played with my new xoom and it was quick on all apps except for SBM but it makes sense since its not optimized yet but as far as browser and keyboard I haven't experienced any lag yet. Side note Google body was very underwhelming.... more for children then Med students or anything past high school.

I get no lag but I use voice to text a lot and that works great
I thought that I was the only one that noticed a little lag on the keyboard..... nothing I can't handle or that stopped me from buying the Xoom

My problems with the keyboard are how it freezes up during a keystroke and the only way to stop it is to turn the Xoom all the way off. It can be a bit laggy, but it seems to depend more on the app being used vs the keyboard its self.

Ya it probably depends on if the app is optimized yet for honeycomb so the keyboard lag issue should be fixed when everything becomes more compatible.

Browser text entry lag

Just recieved my 32gb tab 10.1.
Screen looks much nicer than the Xoom, I had.
Doesn't feel as solid, but is definitely nicer to hold due to the thinner design.
The browser is absolutely awful to use, the text entry in any dialog box is way too slow and the display lags at least a word behind what I have typed.
Tried the built in browser, dolphin hd, and firefox. All text entry is miserably slow. Even on the Google search page.
I was able to improve it a little bit by disabling javascript, but not by much.
Trying to select and edit what I have entered is a true exercise in frustration.
Any suggestions on how to improve?
I'm running retail HC 3.1.
This is a really basic use case and its really disappointing.

Are you charging while trying to use it? It seemed to be the source of the problem for one user, unfortunately I do not yet have mine to try for myself.
I just got mine earlier today and so far text entry in the browser is great. I've read about issues when using it in portrait mode, is that the problem you're having? I've also used mine while plugged into the charger and I can type two-handed pretty fast without any issue.
it's a know bug for honeycomb. it's slow in froyo and gb, but crappily slow in hc. one fix, at least for this forum, is to select xda classic. you can find it to your lower left after scrolling all the way down this page.
yeah, it did same with my Transformer! so it's honeycomb.....
I have experienced none of this lag, but I installed swype first thing
Mine lags too but it's almost unnoticeable because I type so damn slow
Yeah, so type slower lol
could be this problem:
http://www.android-honeycomb.com/20...ortrait-came-from-a-bug-in-the-nvidia-driver/
I know on my Xoom when I flashed the Tiamat kernel that the issue was almost all but gone. Greatly improved.. so I'm just waiting for source to drop and an EXT4 kernel to show up (hint Supercurios) ha.

browser keyboard lag fix... kind of

I found this in one of the xoom forums
Type about:debug into browser bar
Nothing seems to happen
Go to menu>settings>debug
Disable opengl rendering
It's still not perfect but it is significantly better than it was for me
I'm no programmer so do any of you know what opengl does or if it will hinder the browser by disabling that function?
Disabling wide viewport makes the choppy page scrolling a bit more bearable
Does it affect any other performance?
Like the smoothness of page scrolling ... embedded YouTube playing ...

Page scrolling is not as smooth
Viewing youtube videos in the browser doesn't work without it apparently
I'll probably keep it disabled for typing in forums and then toggle it on when i need it for videos. It feels pretty nice to have responsive keyboard presses
You know, I scratched my head thinking about this issue.
How is it possible this happened to a company like Google?
Didn't they test it?
I meant, come on! The problem is obvious and very easy to reproduce, they should have test the keyboard functionality on a web forum!
Probably they don't have test department ... or what???
Unbelievable

It is pretty lame that I have to choose between typing and smooth page scrolling.
Until we get an update to fix the issue I'll keep turning opengl on and off accordingly.
I've tried other debug settings but to no avail
I haven't had (or maybe noticed due to the tracing input method) any keyboard lag using Swype. That was the first thing I installed after I powered up, so I can't compare with the stock keyboard. YMMV.
Also, you want to leave OpenGL enabled, as that is the hardware acceleration library. Would make sense that your page scrolling becomes choppy (and probably pegs your processor - and thus your battery - too). Maybe somebody more familiar with this can explain why there OpenGL would introduce keyboard lag.
Finally, it's annoying - very annoying sometimes - but Android and Google's products in general really are in a perpetual state of beta. It's irritating when you run into issues, but that's also how Android became the powerful (if unpolished at times) platform that it is today so quickly.
this is very annoying i dont know if i can put up with this lag. ive only had it for a day but i do alot of forum typing. might return it and reconsider something else
Most of my favorite forums use TapaTalk so I'm OK for now.
I've also gotten used to typing in a notepad app, then copy the text to the browser. I do that on my phone all the time. I mainly do it that way because I've responded to posts on my phone, hit the submit button, then the page does not load. Hit the back button & all my text is gone.
I've been copying to & from a notepad app for so long, it's not an issue for me at the time.

Did you notice it with the stock keyboards? I've used those plus thumb keyboard and still get lag
OpenGL is the hardware acceleration library for Android. For an application like the browser, there can be two implementations of the "drawing" code for the application. If you wanted to draw some text on the screen, you could use either a bunch of standard text widgets, or you could render the text like a game would - with OpenGL. OpenGL lets you do things that a game would want to do, like scroll the text, rotate it, scale it, etc.
The OpenGL implementation of the browser would be much faster, and lets the device offload a lot of the graphical elements to the GPU.
Perhaps the problem here is that the keyboard (not OpenGL) is being composited on top of the OpenGL browser. That compositing implementation may be borked, or may be done in the CPU rather than the GPU.
So: Who's fault is it? Hard to say. It could be Google's implementation of compositing, or it could be the hardware vendors' (Samsung or Nvidia) implementation of OpenGL for their hardware.
I wonder if other OpenGL apps do the same thing. Someone find a game or graphic intensive application that also uses the stock keyboard and see if you get lag there, as well.
Great insight. I just won an ipad2 and immediately bought the xoom with intention if selling the ipad2 and breaking even, but this keyboard lag is killing me! The ipad2 is so much smoother. Google needs to iron these things out if they expect to make a dent in the tablet market.

I agree with the lag issues in the web browser. Sometimes it's so bad, I tend to wonder if taking my iPad 2 back for the Tab was a wise decision. I really hope TouchWiz can address that issue.

Slow Text Entry?

Is is just me, or is the text entry kind of pathetic on the browser of the tab
any desktop site, like.. Facebook , or XDA, typing lags always a second, so the words and letters typed will show up after you actually type, its not smooth at all...
*laughs hard*
I think there might have been a few discussions about this. Yeah, it's an issue. Dolphin or Opera Mini will work better.
So I think I may have a fix for this. I was digging around in the keyboard settings, and noticed that the Tab ships with "Samsung Keyboard" as the default. I switched mine back to the stock Android keyboard, and it's much better. Of course there are a bunch of replacement keyboards you can use as well, but the stock honeycomb keyboard seems much more responsive than the Samsung one.
So far the Android keyboard, Swiftkey, and Swype keyboards haven't made anything better for me.
I've seen some people say disabling OpenGL in the debug settings helps, but they also say it has some other performance side effects. So... I guess I'll be using Opera Mini for a while.
The Bookmarks widget though makes it real easy to use the stock browser bookmarks (synced from my desktop Chrome browser) real easy with Opera though, so I like that.
ya so far swype is tne worst. But problem ive been having is if i type too fast the keyboard suddenly closes and im constantly having to reopen it.... Its fuggin annoying.
I've been using thumb keyboard and no lag. Its able to keep up with me
i really don't think its keyboard related
I'm using stock hc keyboard
Divineblue try doing a quick reply here on ur tab and you'll see the lag
Its fine in Google search and mobile sites but just des on desktop sites like facebook etc
lag disappears in opera mini but its a slow loading browser and I can tell decreases page quality, also can't get facebook desktop to load, no user agent option
so the hc browser really sucks then and ia behind this text lag
Is this lag a general problem with HC? Do you guys think that it will be fixed?
I got this tab on friday I love it so far but this text entry lag is driving me insane.

Has this been reported to Google?
Because of this issue alone, I postponed my purchase of any Android tablet
Web browsing accounts the most for my usage pattern. And I really hate any slow down for doing it.
See if this is fixed in the upcoming Android 3.2 (if it made to GTab) ... or hopefully ICS.
Is it at all lack of power from the Tegra or is it a glitch./-/
I bet on problem with Android Honeycomb.
It is really strange if Tegra does not have enough power on this!
We have a lot of Tegra phones and they don't have this issue. Sure, this is different OS, but that should show about "power".
Probably we need to wait for Android tablet Honeycomb that does not using Tegra.
And see if the problem still there.

I put my comments in that thread too..
The laggy text in the browser is total fail

Does 3.2 fix the typing lag/blue highlight when typing text in a text box?

Subject says it all. I have owned the Xoom with 3.0, the Asus TF with 3.1, and the Samsung GT 10.1 with 3.1. all suffer from horrific keyboard lag when typing in form boxes, as well as the text being highlighted in blue when typing (which many people believe to be related). It is very apparently when typing a post here at XDA.
The issue has been completely fixed in Samsung's Touchwiz ROM for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I believe the fix is in the framework or the webkit rendering engine (not the browser.apk itself), because third party browsers like Dolphin Pad also have the issue fixed in Touchwiz (and in stock honeycomb 3.1, dolphin DOES have the typing lag/blue highlights).
I'm trying to figure out if this is something that Samsung fixed themselves, or if they maybe got early access to some new new google code, possibly pre3.2 stuff. So my question to you Xoom folks is, is the typing lag and blue highlights still in 3.2, or is it gone?
Thanks.

Well, maybe it's fixed, or maybe I never did experience that terrible lag (or only a couple of times). I rarely use the stock browser. I usually use Dolphin HD and don't have problems with it.
I don't use the XDA app though...I always use the browser...don't know for sure, but people have complained about the xda app itself, so maybe that's the problem.
I still see it sometimes with the deodexed stock 3.2 ROM using the default Browser, but not too often.
This has been a problem inherent in android at least going all the way back to Froyo (when I started with AnOs) but I assume it has always been there.
It can be unbelievably bad especially when trying to move the curser only to find that it consistently appears on another line many words away from where you are tapping. And all the people who I personally know using android have experienced this at least once in their use (some are new users).
I hate beat the dead horse, especially because I am an android user, but this is the kind of thing a person would be publicly executed for at Apple or least get off easy by only losing their job.
If it is actually fixed I will be very happy, at the same time I feel like why should we have to applaud a painfully slow departure from incompetence.
Unfortunately Google's "2.0" is what other people call "beta".
