Miracast on the Nexus 7?

In articles released today, Nvidia said the Tegra 3 chipset will support miracast (an open streaming tech similar to DLNA) for mirroing/streaming to other devices/ monitors. Will the Nexus support this and would this be their workaround for forgoing the MHL/HDMI? Or would it only be on future models? -Ara

I'm very curious about this too.

I've looked into this briefly and from what I gather, any device that supports WIFI direct should be able to do this. I think I read somewhere that the N7 has wifi direct. Miracast is only a standard. There are other non-standard devices out there that can also do the same thing, but requires changes to the core android files.
Search for xbounds on youtube and the internet. You will see some demos of it. it requires an hdmi dongle that has wifi on it that communicates with your device.
In any event, if the N7 doesn't support miracast, it will support xbounds via a custom ROM (if and when somebody decides to build a custom ROM with xbounds integrated). Then all that is required is the xbounds dongle. Unfortunately, there is not much information on xbounds and when it will be released.

What would I need to purchase to get this working?

Hopefully, we don't need to buy stuff, we just need to update our devices when miracast comes down. There's a list of compatible devices on the Wi-Fi Alliance website. -Ara

I've not found any hardware that you could plug into say an HTML Monitor that will work with this yet. I do think it will be coming available soon though.

I reckon it will work with a Nexus 7. Hopefully the dongle isn't too expensive and my Nexus 7 will be my new PSone.

Shouldn't need a dongle. Maybe a Raspberry Pi but everyone should have one of those anyway Search "Android Transporter" for more info.

Nexus Q might get Miracast support
Nexus 7 and most Tegra 3 (also Galaxy S3) phones/tablets can get a fw upgrade to enable miracast (most that support WIFI Direct probably can have Miracast enabled).
Now that google is having another round of tinkering on the Nexus Q before release we might end up with Miracast support in it as well.
Personaly I think Miracast will be added out of the box and maybee even Google TV.
I only hope that it won't be possible to disable mirroring from inside an app using the API, if so I'm sure some streaming services will disable mirroring of the screen while using there apps lika HBO Go have done to Airplay

Using a Raspberry Pi would be like a dongle... I'd like to get my hands on one to play, currently, there is a 12 week delivery time on those as well and you most likely would want it in some sort of case for it as well.
While most likely a solution, not a real clean one for mass marketing. That will come though.

Hopefully it does include support, but that is still a bit pricey and also not very portable.
Think of something you put in your briefcase, take out for a meeting, plug into the HDMI port of whatever display is in the room and play. So it needs to be portable, reasonably priced and easy to use out of the box without a lot of fiddling with it.

I am thinking that these will do what we need on the display side. Now to enable it on the Nexus 7.

Has anyone heard any updated news on miracast? I tried Google but all I found was old news. I'm really tired of waiting.

I'm seeing the ability to share pics and videos in the specs.
We can't currently do it with our Galaxy Nexus to and from the SGS III (and I haven't been able to test it with any other devices) so is there something new in Android Beam coming with the Nexus 4?
In other words, can we get some wifi direct lovin?!

My guess is (I have experienced the same thing) that the S3 is not capable of reviecing so large files via NFC.
and my simple guess is that if the S3 would have CyanogenMOD or something else it would work..

Shame since I have so many more friends with SGSIIIs than GNexii ... I actually don't know anyone with a GNex here where I live but I have three good pals with SGSIIIs.

The Galaxy Nexus can send pictures via NFC. I tried it out with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus & GSM Galaxy Nexus. It'll take a while, but NFC picture transfers do work (I haven't tried videos though).

I think it is the same old Android Beam though I was hoping it was something newer that would allow sharing with the GSIII. Good old proprietary Samsung. Google should have asked that NFC sharing was more standardized but true to Android platform tenets, Samsung went and made it better. Can't really blame them.

NFC only send very small data packets (~20kb). When it "shares over NFC", what they mean is the NFC initiates a Bluetooth connection, and sends the file via that.

I really feel sorry for myself for believing in those Sam****'s commercials. I need to stop believing in them real quick.

They (SGSIIIs) do everything they say in the commercials ... This is about the Nexus line and how it needs to get on the WiFi direct bandwagon or make it optional so that we Nexus folks can send large files with all NFC enabled devices--particularly the SGS III, which happens to be the most popular.
If the Nexus 4 somehow does this, I'd definitely go pick one up. That's why I want to know what's up with them.

We'll I have a Nexus 4, and attempted to send a small photo I grabbed from the internet to my brother-in-law's Galaxy Note 2, and both phones respond to the NFC detection. My phone says "Touch to Beam", and I tap the screen, and the Galaxy Note 2 says "Incoming beam.." But after 10 to 15 secs, says "Incoming beam failed".
I tried it with my wife's phone (SG3), and the same problem happened. This is very disheartening.. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 4 rocks, love how smooth, and clean the O/S. Just the fact that I can't take advantage of Android Beaming to another Android device sucks at the moment. Knowing the SG3 is almost everywhere now.

So it looks like either S-Beam won't play nice with non-Galaxy S devices and/or the Nexus 4 doesn't use WiFi direct to actually send the file like S-Beam does.

You know I've been playing around with NFC and Android Beam the past few days too and I'll share some of my results.
I've been able to "beam" links, youtube videos, and a picture. The devices I have available to try were my Nexus 4, a Galaxy Nexus (running 4.2 stock), and a Nexus S (running CM10 stable). All worked like it was supposed to. I did try to send a song to my brother's Nexus S, but it did the "Incoming beam..." thing that JayCapo pointed out. It eventually opened Google Music, but it never transferred.
Dunno, yet. Will try more and different scenarios.

I've only tried using Android Beam to receive a photo, which works fine, and that's with another Nexus4 device.
As for wifi direct, the option is there, but I've not tried it yet.
In the wifi settings page, press the menu (three dots?) in the bottom right and select wifi direct.

Eeeek WiFi direct just kind of sits there not doing anything. I can connect to devices but the option to share doesn't seem to show up in the gallery or anywhere else. That's for another thread.

[Q] Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy

Other flagships have hardware that support this - does the Nexus and is Android 4.2 likely to support it? (4.1 does not).
Why is it useful? Well if you use a heart rate monitor for sports, it will last longer. It can also be used to connect devices.
It's a huge feature for me as a runner. Currently I use a Garmin 305 which is an awesome, if ugly, product. With apps like strava / endomondo and more, it would be nice to have all this, with GPS and music on one device

I believe Bluetooth 4.0 is present on this device. Check the spec sheet on Google Play, but I'm 99.99% sure.

The hardware is present for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) but as yet, no version of Android supports it.
There is an issue thread on google regarding this - if people star it google might treat the issue as a priority.

I think google is looking to NFC for nearfield communication forgetting some of the cool uses bluetooth can be put to.

The Broadcom BCM4330 supports BTLE (http://www.broadcom.com/press/release.php?id=s549642), and according to this website: http://www.ubmtechinsights.com/repo...market-reports/Report-Profile/?ReportKey=8713
The LG Optimus G uses that Broadcom chip, so it's possible that the Nexus 4 also uses it?

It doesn't look too good. Although they have rewritten the stack, there is no mention of Bluetooth Low Energy or Bluetooth Smart.
Apart from the issue raised with google in my first post, I have no idea how to reach out to them regarding this. Does anyone know? This is Android general rather than device specific. Pretty much all the new handsets have hardware that support BLE but there is no OS support in Android

Any updates on the BLE support? I am working on a BLE breakout board and would like to get it working with the Nexus 4 rather than just the computer via a dongle. From what I've found online there is a BLE stack in 4.2, yet for some reason I can't find it or get anything to work.

What exactly would this do? I understand the low energy stuff, but I don't see what else it has, and whether we have to enable it first, or something.

BLE is a wireless protocol that peripheral devices can use to interface with your phone. Somewhat similar to regular bluetooth (and other proprietary wireless links), it can allow a sensor to wirelessly stream data or allow a phone to control a robot or any other device with BLE. I'm not sure if that answers your question. The real benefit is that BLE uses significantly less power (upon other things) and thus can enable a new set of devices. For example, part of my dissertation is a cardiac monitoring system which I would like to connect to my Nexus 4.

Would love to play with the Stick-n-Find and/or Meterplug. And upgrade my Fitbit to the Bluetooth 4.0 version so I don't have to keep plugging that stupid dongle into my laptop.

Arrrghg - your post is what I found when searching for Fitbit, which I just bought. Very frustrating our N4's can't support the BT connection yet. I also hate that stupid dongle!

The new Fitbits use BLE too? Wow, Google need to get Android caught up, really never expect them to be behind with technologies.
So, should I send my H7 back, or wait???

I just bought a Fitbit One which uses BLE. I'm with you guys in hoping Google gets this feature added and supported very soon. It would be really nice!

This will be addressed with K release.

Coming from Android (possibly)

I'm looking at the 950XL as it seems to have all the specs of the Nexus 6P but also includes USB 3.1, which is very important to me (I currently have a Note 3 which needs upgrading).
Project Astoria quite interests me; can you use any Android App with this, or just certain ones?
One thing I like about Android is the ability to flash ROMs; I don't think there's anything like this with Windows is there?
(Slightly dodgy topic to talk about) On Android I can just search for an app adding the word 'apk' on Google and download it for free. Is there anyway to do this on Windows?
I used to run Windows Mobile and before that Windows CE, before switching to Android

I just saw your question. Here is some of what I know. As of right now there is an app called 'bluestack' that allows you to run apks as if on android with google services this is a win 8 app though.
There are plus' and minus' here.
1. The feature that makes what you that interested in are win universal apps. That announced by MS is supposed to be repackaged Android apks and converted to universal apps. They then would use Windows services. (a minus or a plus depending on preferences)
2. Blue stack (and its alternatives)may need to be updated to a win 10 universal app. The biggest upside to the 950/xl are that dual booting maybe possible. And a full emulation is possible almost like having 2 phones in one. I say that because of how windows runs or promises to run. With win10 it should be a hackers/tinkerers/dev dream. Leading to more of the apps you may want to port over.
3. Porting maybe possible with the tools MS provide. You maybe able to repackage apks on your own into win10 universal apps.
4.this is the last thing. You maybe able to enjoy 3rd party win10 apps. There are alternatives to twitter for example on windows but no actual Twitter app which some say are better than Twitter's actual app. Also some reporters have said that microsoft are offer to build apps(official) for companies like Twitter and then hand it over to them and they then take over maintenance. But that hasn't worked so far.

Many thanks for your reply. I've been reading a lot, trying to get my head around the new Windows Phone experience. It seems vastly different from what I used to have on my HTC HD2, which was my last Windows Phone.
One app I use a lot and I find useful is Truecaller, it tells you who's calling, even if you don't have their number in your phone. I presume this needs some sort of integration with the OS. I wonder if Project Astoria offers this level of integration.

My last windows phone was also the HD2 and I've used android ever since. I recently bought a lumia so I could try windows 10 preview. There are a couple of things I miss:
- the ability to transfer files to/from my NAS through WiFi without having to go through a pc
- swipe keyboard doesn't work in some places, eg works in messaging but not in browser
- android .nomedia facility
- banking - my bank is HSBC and they don't have a windows app
If the 950x windows 10 version fixes the first two of these then that will be my next phone.

My banking app also isnt on WP10.
I also like to use DOSbox to play old games on my phone.
Also Torque for hooking up to cars ECU via a bluetooth OBD2 reader.
No Starbucks app
I also use my LG Gwatch to receive notification on my wrist at work. As Im not allowed to get my phone, this is a very very handy feature for me.
I think I'm too invested in Android right now. I am a real Windows 10 Phone wannabe though. I wish I could afford both the Nexus 6P and Lumia 950XL.

Windows Lumia 950xl check every check in the box for what i want in a smartphone on the hardware side... But my issues is that i know that you can port apps over but how many official apps from ios and android made it to the windows store. Once they have app they will have me as a new consumer

I figured this thread would be a good place to ask since it already existed. A little background. I'm a heavily entrenched Android user since the Evo 4G days and have service with several telecoms and own several phones as well. I saw the new presentation and I was really impressed, however, I need some help to see if the switch is right for me.
1) I use Google Voice to manage all of my numbers and phones. I heard that Skype doesn't allow number Port In, however, does allow forwarding. Does anyone know if this is true? Why don't they allow number Port In? Is it coming in the future? Any creative solutions around this?
2) I don't own a P.C., so Continuum really intrigues me. I've always owned PlayStation and loved being able to stream my PlayStation to my Sony phones and play remotely. Would I be able to stream XBoxOne to my phone and use Continuum to play on a monitor? What about streaming to a T.V. for Netflix or other apps like that?
3) I'm really interested in turning my home "smart". I know that Android has a big IoT platform and it'll be great with NEST and the other things they have coming down the pipeline. What about Windows? Is there a platform available? What products support it? Can it all be phone controlled and do apps exist for them?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I'm sure there are others in my boat who might have similar questions.

So in theory you can do this with windows phone right now. remember one windows isn't anything new. windows 8.1 is on the xbox one. And you can use the pass through feature on any windows device. On windows 10, its all the same, even on mobile because on phone it is full windows running (just slightly different ui, right now if windows 10 on desktop is told its on an under 6inch screen it locks into mobile or atleast the apps do, per windows weekly). Even though it is mobile you could run full photo shop on the phone with a couple of hacks. The one issue is Windows doesn't run well on Arm processors snapdragon 810 and 808... Look out also for a zenfone 2 running Windows 10 mobile. Also the is some one hacking the zenfone to port windows 10.
My dream is for the test windows 10 mobile rom that was being tested on xiaomi mi4 could get ported.
Also microsoft has debated on creating a rom that's flashable to android devices. That helps them get the 1billion user goal. And also attract devs and hacking enthusiasts.

No, it is not full Win10.
It only runs "universal" apps (the successor of the "metro" apps of windows 8/8.1/10)...

Truecaller is already available on win10 mobile. It shows info about who is calling but also can act as your call and text message spam filter, a feature I don't think they have on Android.

I'm in the same boat. The 950 checks all my boxes hardware wise, but I do think it'll be hard to switch.

Figure that would be a good device to test everything out on and see if I can make the switch. And I could probably sell it in a few months to close to what I paid for it.

I actually waited to the last minute if a really serious device comes out this year from Android and only three came "close but no cigar" (the others far behind including the Note5, a series I used to be a fan and they stupidly killed by turning to a fashion series like S series):
- LG V10. I don't like the little screen (mostly the awkward positioning and that is not AMOLED but is always on - which kind of defeats the concept) and I don't care about the two selfie cams. Also you make it tough. Why not water resistant (at least) also?
- Z5 Premium. I always liked the Z series, but they failed to really advance it and now you can even call it ugly. 4K for a non-4K ready world is just a nice selling bullet. You put a super-MP camers, with no OIS and a simple single LED flash. Goofy.

I started with windows hacking until I bought a HTC evo 4g. I have had 4 nexus devices and currently on the nexus 6. When the 950xl becomes available i am ditching the 6 for windows again after several years of android. Just out grew android. It was fun buy going back to where it all started.

No, only universal apps are able to run on Arm and X86 Plattform. W10 is similar on Arm and X86 but all Apps / Programms has to do the step and create Universal Apps while also Microsoft seems to work on Phones which are based on X86 CPU.
So this is a first step into the future which will provide same stuff on Desktop, Tablet and Phones. While Android has no Desktop OS and Apple has IOS and MAC OS seperated, Microsoft did the next step to Melt all worlds together. Now it is on us to support this way and on them to work continously to improve the process.

Totally agree and i don't like the way Samsung is heading, no microsSD, removable battery etc.
MS is no Saint with privacy, but Google is ignoring us users more and more.
A bought a 950xl just a few days ago.
Having a Android device for years, this Lumia is fun, new etc.
Although i must say, the available / working apps is a bit....
Anyone has a working Tapatalk yet?

Yes, apps, always been lacking there. I have a feeling that's gonna change. Windows phone hacking & development is coming back. I will hold on to my nexus and gonna get the 950xl

Same for me, I used Sammy phones for some years now and it seems they lost the track more and more. For sure there is a need for more apps but its a bit a Chicken and Egg thing. If you ask Software companies they tell you that there are not enough Windows phones to make it worth to develop a APP and if you ask customers they tell you that there are not enough apps to make it worth buying a Windows Phone... Actually I see Windows Phones appear in more and more companies where they replace IPhones. ALso the Bridge Projects seems to be more promissing then the Astoria one. For us as WP users we must not care about as most good apps exist for IOS and ANdroid at the same time. If the porting from IOS work good, we will get a lot of apps soon. The rest is on Microsoft then, they have to motivate companies to create a lot of universal apps. Actually the 950/950XL seems to be the only phones with some inovation right now. Lets see end of 2016 where we are.
I forget to mention that there exist a Tapatalk app and it works. Not that good but it works and do the job.

Wireless Android Auto

Does s10+ support wireless android auto? I can't fond any info about it.

I read that the car's side also has to be compatible? So probably most existing cars won't support it anyway?

Yeah the car unit needs to support it also, My car radio support it but my current Note8 does not support it even with android pie was thinking of switching to s10 if ever it is supported.

I am not 100% positive, but I beleive the only limitation to WIreless Android Auto is the phone must be on PIE - so with that, I assume that the S10 phones will work wirelessly.
I have a Google Pixel and use Android Auto a lot and frankly, I find the wired solution better - connections wirelessly take longer - where with my unit, when I am plugged into USB, the connection is nearly immediate. That is never the case with the wireless android auto connection.
Don't get me wrong, when it connects it works well - but sometimes I don't have the patience to wait so I just plug in.... I guess we will find out for sure how it works with the S10s when they arrive (or if someone already has one, maybe they can chime in....

i am using a Kenwood Excelon DDX9905S head unit, custom installed in a BMW X1 - connect time wirlessly with android auto is up to about 30 seconds after car is started.

Wow I have pioneer w8400 I hope it dies not take that long. I wish someone can test if s10 works cause my S9 with the latest pie update does not work with it such a shame very simple update but samsung just ignore to include it.

Not specifically about WIRELESS Android Auto, but I hope they come out with a fix to this.

Sadly my truck does not currently support Android Auto wirelessly. Perhaps GM will update the software. The truck is less than a year old.

I think you need to change your headunit, I think it is more on the hardware side in headunit.

I have an aftermarket deck (Pioneer NEX8400) that does support Android Auto Wireless (and Apple Car Play Wireless that does work with my work phone). The Samsung S10+ (and my previous phone the S9+) with PIe do not support wireless Android Auto. I complained to Samsung support about this as the Pixel has had it working for a while now. They apologized for not offering it in this Pie build.

From what I've read, it just sounds like Google is hand picking devices it works for. Bullcrap is what it is. I left Samsung a few months ago after being loyal for 6 devices in a row, to get the Pixel 3 XL. I was unhappy enough with just the screen touch recognition on the P3XL to get rid of it, and came back to a S10+. I am totally happy with my S10 again, I feel at home........but if this is Google's plot to get people to switch? Stupid.
I know this thread is back from March, but figured it needed a bump. Is this something that can be added with root? Any dev's in here? I haven't rooted my last 3 devices, but with my previous devices I certainly flashed those more times than a sexual offender at a playground. I'd get back into it if this is something the dev world can make work!
