Make the 6 GB of RAM 8 GB and I would prefer 6 core as we would be building for the I9100, I9100G, I9300, n7000, n7100, grouper and mako

I am an another country for my work now. give me a few days (2 -3)

Does this effect RAM??

Correct. Android 1.6 can only handle 256MB (i think anyway). Its like Windows XP and the 3.2GB RAM limit - sure you can put more than that in the machine but it will only see the maximum amount it can use.
384 but close enough ;-)

can anyone see the size of the RAM being increased over time, perhaps not with 2.1 but in the future, only reason i'm asking is because this is one of the few 1ghz high end phones with less than 512mb of ram and this is a requirment for android 3.0. thinking ahead here . it's just dissapointing to know :/
i'm still very excited about 2.1's arrival which i have been searching for almost every day
just got my xperia x10 last week after a long hard choice between that and the HTC desire and i've never really been a Sony Ericsson fan as all my old phones had software issues and crashed a lot, not what i expected.
Any way it really is a brilliant phone but like everyone says 'the outdated software' is the phones only major dissapointment.

there have been some posts on websites about the recommended requirements, which to be fair seems a bit steep for a mobile operating system, now unfortunately i can't past the link you'll have to Google 'android 3.0 recommended requirements' or something similar
details below
Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2
Eldar also confirmed my musings about the death of third party User Interface shells like HTC Sense, MotoBlur, etc;. Android 3.0 basically kills the need for them.
Still, there’s some hope for third party vendors here – while Google takes over the UI on the high end, vendors get to keep their UI shells/improvements on mass market Android smartphones, running Eclair or Froyo.
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.
When I run diskusage it shows me having 465 for data so it looks like we dont even get 512. Will the 2.1 update let us install all this stuff on the sd card?

[Q] Actual Storage on the Nexus 7

How much GB of storage does the 8 GB and 16 GB versions of the Nexus 7 actually have?
The 8 GB model has 5.74 GB on it
So the 16 gb version should have approx 13.74 gb available.
It should have 13.74, unless the unusable space is directly proportional to that of the 8gb. In this case it would have approximately 11.118 gb for the user.
any way to change your order from 8 GB to 16 GB?

I don't fully agree with this guess (no offence!). Let me have a go!
So, with an 8 gig model (this is 8*10^9 bytes not 8*2^30 bytes - it's how all hard drives are sold) we know this has a usable space of 5.74Gb. Now, just the raw drive will have 7.45Gb of space (this is the marketed 8 gig figure's actual size - 8*10^9/2^30). So 7.45-5.74 suggests 1.80Gb of space taken up by the filesystem and the operating system and whatever else is on there. So, the raw drive size of a 16 gig model is 14.9Gb using the above formula. Assuming that the overheads are constant (I've no idea if this is a valid assumption or not but I would imagine the size of the OS is) then my estimate is 14.9-1.80 = 13.1Gb. (All figures are correct to 3 significant figures.)
I'm half way through a maths masters (it's summer - I'm bored) so I have some confidence in using my calculator, but, I don't know if my understanding is correct! If when someone does get the 16 gig model I'd like to know the actual answer (I'm getting the 8). I hope someone can prove me wrong/right!

he's most likely basing it off of an existing device.
For Example, my 16GB Galaxy Nexus shows 13.33GB total space in the storage settings. But in various apps it reads as 13,648MB.
Anyway, exact storage for 16GB will be above 13GB.

I have always been confused by this. I have always felt like saying a device has 8, 16, or 32 GB of memory is false advertising since every time I get a device with that amount of memory, there is usually much less free space. I didn't realize that the amount of memory the OS takes up isn't factored into the equation, and the whole bit vs byte confuses me as well. Oh well, lol. Thats why I never became a computer engineer, I guess.

[Q] Nexus 4 storage free ( vs One X+ )

Hello,
I am going to buy a new smartphone next week and I am torn between One X+ and Nexus 4.
Nexus 4: 350 euro
One X+: 450 euro
I am interested in camera quality and also storage since I am going to take a lot of pictures and videos. So 64gb of space in X+ is very compelling versus 16gb on nexus, and dropbox offer for 25gb is also a bonus. What I have been thinking though is that with the 100 euro less paid, I could have bought the package from Dropbox for 100gb and have enough space for storage. But then I am forced to upload whatever I take online and delete them from the phone.
How much storage does Nexus 4 have free after the basic apps installation (gmail, chrome, google+, messengers, skype etc) ?
Another issue I am thinking is Ram on X+, 1gb is not very future-proof I think so this can be a problem with latest android versions.
Does it worth the 100 euro more to go for One X+ ????
What's your opinion ?
Thank you

I'm having N4 and it shows 12.8Gigz available out of the box. IMO go for HOX+ if you are looking for camera quality and storage. 64Gigz is more than you can bargain for.

+1 to this, go for the HOX+ if you care about camera quality and available storage. I personally don't see cloud storage as being a valid substitute for device storage and the camera on the N4 isn't great. The only thing is the 100 Euro price difference, surely you can find something cheaper?
With Google you get 15GB free storage as well, and your photos are automatically uploaded to Drive. And if you fill up that 15GB (between gmail and drive) then you still get unlimited storage for photos at 2MP I believe.
However I really don't think the camera on the Nexus 4 is particularly good...... Unless I'm holding it wrong
Edit There are plenty of storage services that provide more storage than dropbox, try box.com or even SkyDrive or Ubuntu one. In my sig is copy who give you 15GB to everyone or 20 if you use that link.
Another edit - Mediafire is another site, damn fast servers and if I remember everyone gets 50GB. And there's always Mega!! Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but another 50GB to be had. Mega though has no account recovery system so you forget your details you lose everything (at least I think that's right?)
I am not looking for a file hosting service. I want one of the clouds I use if I decide to use them for photo storage. And these are, gdrive, skydrive and dropbox. It's just that dropbox is the only one with a linux client.
As for the phones though, I guess I am going for the One X+ due to the storage mainly and better camera. Is the 1gb ram less going to be a real problem for the next android versions ? at least for another 1.5 years ???
I strongly doubt the RAM will be an issue but you won't be officially updated much and the GPU is likely to struggle with heavy gaming. Other than those two issues the HOX+ should be a decent phone I think.
Well, I play no games at all, except for some simple ones, puzzle like! So gpu is not a problem as long as it does not become a bottleneck for the OS graphics.
I always root my devices so latest updates is not a problem, but it will be if 1gb of ram is insufficient for a new version...
Are there any reports or leaks for upcoming android versions and their requirements ?

There's a rumour something will be announced/released June 10th. So maybe just wait until then.
As for RAM 1Gig is still a lot, on my nexus there is usually between 1/2 - 1 gig free RAM. photo editing etc might make use of more RAM though.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about this. Who cares if it comes with a 64-bit processor versus a 32-bit? Do you need 4GB+ of ram for arguing that you must have a 64-bit OS? Or are you hoping they launch it in 64-bit so you get the next latest and greatest processor? Android L will launch in 32/64-bit flavors. I would put my bet on the tablet containing the 64-bit version.

Totally agree with adio01, I believe that having 64 bit support will only be useful if you need to allocate more than 4GB of memory. There is however, a per process limit of 3GB on 32bit. So 64bit support would make sense if you:
a) Have more than 4GB of RAM
b) Have an application that is very very thirsty and needs more than 3GB of memory
Scenario a is obvious. If the device has less than 4GB of memory there is no problem. 64bit actually introduces some additional overhead so it might actually perform marginally worse than 32bit.
Scenario b is very unlikely on a mobile device. This would make sense when doing heavy video editting or photoshop on a desktop.
It does look good on the box though but that would be beneficial to marketing only.
So what's the screen size for it? Some sites say 5.9 and others 5.2. I'm hoping it's not 5.9..
64bit has lots more advantages than larger memory addressing capabilities!

About RAM Management on X86 platform

Hello everyone!
First the video link ( is in PT-BR, but my text has the translation of the point of interest ) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiS1463v92o
Recently, the marketing manager of ASUS Latin America, Marcel Campos gave an interview for these guys to talk about the launch of ZF3 in Brazil , and also the ZF2 that are very successful here.
They were told many things , but one in particular caught my attention :
From 31:00 video , when they spoke of ZenUI , the interviewer asks :
- " If the zenfone has 4gb RAM , why ASUS included a RAM cleaner in ZenUI ? "
And Marcel Answer:
- " Simple: Because of the X86 platform."
I have no knowledge to contest this information , then I would a developer who understands RAM management opine about it . Is that really true? What changes in android management ARM vs. X86 ?
I don't know, too. But i'm using a zenfone 2 with an intel SoC (x86), free RAM always < 1GB. But my friend has a Zenfone max, which has a Qualcomm SoC, free RAM in most case > 1 GB

I think that's not true at all. Many are using Custom ROMs and their RAM is well-managed up to 2.8gb free at normal usage unlike with stock ZenUI that you can hardly get 2gb free RAM
