Thanks for catching this. However, if people want faster access to the list of cached / running apps then disabling the double click S-Voice functionality in the settings makes the holding down of the button to get to the list of these apps appear faster. Also that is a good thing to do as holding down the menu button now gets you to Google Now which works better than S-Voice anyway. Thanks for posting this.

Poor Multitasking

Anybody experience apps being killed by OS when multitasking?
For example, I have 2 tabs open in Opera. I received a mail and opened Gmail. After reading the mail and return to Opera, Opera is killed and all the tabs have to reload. This happens all the time even when there are plenty of RAM available! (<550MB/766MB)
*Note: This doesn't occur on my SGS2 that is running Gingerbread. My SGS2 multitasks flawlessly.
Yeah, I too have this problem just by switching from one app to another and back. I will pay more attention to see what else I can notice about it.
Edit:
Mine was with Dolphin HD and some other app.
I have not had this problem. But I only use the stock browser.
likewise, when using Dolphin HD with at least 3 tabs opened, then an SMS will come via GO SMS, when I return back to Dolphin, all tabs were loading
i used to have windows mobile phone (Not windows phone)
i used a application called Alt+tab and set a hard key to it.
and works like a charm.
that's almost 10 years ago.. but this top of the line tablet still cant do proper switch running app action.
That is why we need ICS. I have no big problem with HC but that reloading of tabs are really annoying. On my Note with ICS i can do so much more without the frustration. They have virtually the same specs so only thing i can do is wait for ICS.

Perhaps. I do suspect HC is the issue too. My SGS2 running Gingerbread multitasks without issues unless it is running out of RAM while the issue occurs all the time even if there are plenty of RAM available on my SGT 7.7!
I'm having the same problem. What makes it worse, is I got this thing as a sketchpad, and wanted to screencast my drawings....I've successfully completed a few, but I've had a few crash on me. Not just annoying....FRUSTRATING. I was really hoping this was going to be the answer to apples thrust toward "production-level" devices.
I'm needing too many work-arounds to make it so...

exactly, multitasking in HC really annoys me especially when i'm browsing!
i guess, we will only need to wait for ICS. =(
Same here, Even small apps close if they are in the background,
SAMSUNG WE NEED ICS!!
JFSG,
Try this: under developers option in settings - at the bottom under category "apps", see if the box next to "don't keep activities" is checked.
If it is checked then un-check it.
This is just an idea, since I don't have a 7.7 and haven't messed with honeycomb in a while, but I thought I would throw it out there. I had a similar problem and found that I had checked this option.

They're no développer options in HC ;-)
I'm wondering if this is related to how the stock tablet has always had such low free memory even when all the background tasks are closed. Someone brought it up in another thread and got the excuse of how android is soo efficient and it frees up memory as you need it, blah blah. That may be right, but I don't feel a top tier device should be such that switching tasks like this causes the background tasks to be wiped just because the free memory is already so low. I may be wrong, but I'm just wondering.
My Razr Maxx w/ Eclipse and CM9 Touchpad both start w/ over 500MB free memory and i don't see this issue on those devices.

Opening contacts lag.

Hey everyone, I've always been a fan of HTC and sense UI but few days ago I got the Note III to try Samsung for the first time.
Its been a great experience so far but touchwiz seems to be laggy at times especially when performing the simplest of tasks. Opening contacts is sometimes disgusting on the Note III. It takes a few seconds to open and for a phone packed with the S800 clocked at 2.3Ghz, 3GB of RAM its quite disappointing.
I posted this just to see if I'm the only one experiencing this if not I hope I can get a solution plus I've already downloaded the 27MB stabilisation update.
Thanks in advance.

Hey there... I've never had a HTC phone so I can't comment on their sense launcher but yes Touchwiz isn't all that great in some areas.
Like you said the contacts can take a couple of seconds to come up, does speed up if you've opened it recently but that's beside the point. The hardware on the Note 3 is blistering fast and Samsung should really hold up on their feature list and work on their launcher more.
It's funny with new Samsung phones you hear so many people say the thing they did was install another launcher. Listen up Samsung.

hi ,
al i can say i had many htc device's ( htc desire hd, htc one x and a few others )
i then( for various reasons ...eg ,mainly battery life ..heat ,bad customer service etc ) switched to note 2 and now note 3.(Very happy overall ).
first of all ,i never use Touchwiz ,been using Nova premuin all along and very happy with Nova.!...
I do not have any noticeable lag, on my n9005 ( as you summed it up .." S800 clocked at 2.3Ghz, 3GB of RAM " and I say its just the opposite of " disappointing. " )
My contacts etc opens fast, smooth .. ,No problems .
battery i get, + - 3 % drain overnight re 10//12 hours etc .etc
i am still on original stock ,not rooted and have done no updates, and i am enjoying my Spen features !!!!
i feel i have " tweaked " my phone just right !
So my advice is not hoping on some update ,but start looking at ways in how you can identify lag etc .(reading, searching, worked for me )
I will give you one tweak ,that worked for me( previous note 2 and 3 ) ..pressing home button normally resulted in a slight lag .,
I disabled Svoice( i dont use it ) my lag on phone home button is no more !
good luck

Hey thanks man, this fixed the lag I'v been getting with my Note 3 all I did was go into S-Voice and unchecked the "Open via home key" box.
This fixed the lag when pushing the home key, and also the lag when turning on the phone screen via power button or home screen.
Exactly, couldn't have said it better. I love the hardware but touchwiz is a let down. I'm currently running Nova Launcher which makes the OS look more premium and not cartoonish.

Have you been using the music app?
Can you check the available memory to verify if you don't have a memory leak?
Stock music app seems to leak memory and cause these issues.

3-4 seconds???? This is unusual...Wow. Something is definitely wrong with your device.
Mine takes 1 second, if my phone has been "idle" for few minutes. If screen has been off for a minute, it wakes up as soon as I press home button.

Samsung forgot the Exynos devs first... the lack of interest and development is because of Samsung's actions in the past.
I just "upgraded" from an S3 to an S5 (both on Verizon). If I let the screen go off on its own, wake up takes multiple seconds. This lag is ridiculous. I'm pretty underwhelmed after this "upgrade"...may return and wait to see what else comes out in the next few months.

My friend go to settings and svoice and unckeck the option (open by double click home button) I also had some delay but it reduced a bit because the phone waits for the second click to activate the svoice.
If you are still getting more then 2 sec some thing is wrong with your device. Try to restore it to factory by Samsung comp app.

I just thought it was funny how such a first world problem this is... LOL
But hey, if I paid this much money, it should do what it's supposed to. Hope y'alls lag go away.
Like they say," bad internet (or in this case phone) does not make a person rage, lag does."
This is even worse than I thought (I've only had the phone for a week). There are times when waking up takes 10+ seconds and requires hitting the home button 3 or 4 times. Phone is stock Verizon (no root or custom ROM), SD card, Galaxy launcher (instead of TouchWiz).
I think i read around saying that was only an issue on the exynos devices where the SD card messes with the phone's performance?
Personally with my snapdragon 900I with a 32gb sandisk class 10, i havent been experiencing any performance slow downs.

No issues here with a Class 10 16GB sd card - this is a remnant when I had a S3.
Then moved on to Nexus.
Edit: Exynos, G900H
I just got my s5 yesterday and everything was going smoothly, and quick. Today I noticed the lag on wake. I noticed since I set up the smart remote that it placed controls on the lock screen. Through the smart remote settings I removed the lock screen controls and the phone is waking up again with no lag.

[Q] Any way to make Recent Apps button faster on Lollipop?

Hi guys, I would just like to have everyone know I love my Note 4 N910F but the one I absolutely hate about it is the recent apps button lag is attrocious. I was hoping that the Lollipop update would fix the massive delay/lag when pressing the recents button and although it did a little bit, there's still a massive delay. I used a Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 which were both low-mid range phones that had absolutely no lag when pressing the recents button.
I'm currently on Rooted Stock Lollipop, is there anything that can be done to make recent apps pop up more instanty? I'll flash another Lolipop Rom providing it's fast with good battery life and someone can confirm there is no recents delay?
Yes.
Force close facebook app and test recents. As soon as facebook reload itself lag come back again.
I dont use facebook.app. it is turned off and the lag is still here. Less but still is present

So basically out of all the crazy mods and development that is done on the note 4, nobody can make the recent apps button work without delay on a touchwiz rom...
Have you tried any of the solutions in this thread?

I know how u feel man. I've tried every trick known to man but nothing permanently stops this insane multitasking lag. My conclusion is that Samsung simply don't know how to fix it yet - because the problem has existed since kit-Kat

Also for the record I've tried the freezing talk back app & other stuff. Some extras I've tired include singing classic songs to my phone, installing jelly bean wallpapers & recently I've tried holding my breath whilst blinking rapidly. Nothing works lmao

I feel your pain, man. A lot of digital ink's been spent on this. No one seems to have been able to fix this. I think it's a problem with TouchWiz. I was actually curious to see whether the 6/6 Edge still had this problem but I haven't had luck finding a video where someone pulled up the recent apps menu. Frankly, I don't think this is going to be fixed for our device anytime soon, if at all -- heck, many Note 4 users don't even have Lollipop yet.
I even tried looking for a recent apps substitute and mapping the button to my recent apps button but couldn't make it work.

I played with a Galaxy A3 and A5 which are low-mid range phones that have their recent apps button working flawless on Kitkat. Yesterday played with both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and the Recent Apps button is flawless. Maybe if someone ports a Galaxy S6 Rom over to the Note 4 then we can say goodbye to this problem. Touchwiz is meant to be toned down and lighter on resources on the Galaxy S6.
Disable the talkback service in application manager, will fix your problem
Recent apps faster
The only way is turn off multi window and freeze talkback.
It Sick but there's no other way.
I turn multiwindow back on when i need it
I can't believe it's so simple... I did exactly that and now my alb95 3.5 rom is perfect! Thank you!

it's supposedly fixed in 5.1.1.

Note 5 kills apps way too aggressively.

Killing apps too aggressively. MIght be same issue the S6 has.
If I hit the home button, it will kill whatever app I was using. But if i jump from app to app using recents, then the apps seem to stay alive longer.
Anyone figure out why going to home kills the last app? Specifically, Im trying to use SMS backup and restore and it keeps saying restore interrupted.
Samsung's idea of RAM management is sadly to kill anything as quickly as possible, great for making sure you always have RAM available, not good for keeping apps open in the background though. It's not a bug really, just bad memory management policy really.
Same issue on an S6. I tried to confirm, if I hit the home button and open the app with the icon, the app reloads but if I use the mutlitasking button, the app stay open.
I tried with both TW and Nova, same results.
That's insanly stupid...
PS : I already knew the issue but what I didn't know is that if I use the multitasking button it don't reload because I usually return to home.
This is a problem that happen to the new Samsung phones. Since my S6 Edge got the 5.1.1 update it got better however I don't have this problem on my Note 5.
I had page opened on the browser. Went to the home screen, took about 7 pictures. Opened browser again and the page was open. Didn't releoad.

I think it may seem a little better on the Note 5 but its still really bad. I watched a Note 5 on T-Mobile killing 5 apps with 1.6GB of free ram. I don't know what Samsung is doing in the background but on their new phones free ram has literraly nothing to do with when the phone kills apps in the background.
