[Q] Any way to make Recent Apps button faster on Lollipop? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I would just like to have everyone know I love my Note 4 N910F but the one I absolutely hate about it is the recent apps button lag is attrocious. I was hoping that the Lollipop update would fix the massive delay/lag when pressing the recents button and although it did a little bit, there's still a massive delay. I used a Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 which were both low-mid range phones that had absolutely no lag when pressing the recents button.
I'm currently on Rooted Stock Lollipop, is there anything that can be done to make recent apps pop up more instanty? I'll flash another Lolipop Rom providing it's fast with good battery life and someone can confirm there is no recents delay?

Yes.
Force close facebook app and test recents. As soon as facebook reload itself lag come back again.

I dont use facebook.app. it is turned off and the lag is still here. Less but still is present

So basically out of all the crazy mods and development that is done on the note 4, nobody can make the recent apps button work without delay on a touchwiz rom...

Have you tried any of the solutions in this thread?

I know how u feel man. I've tried every trick known to man but nothing permanently stops this insane multitasking lag. My conclusion is that Samsung simply don't know how to fix it yet - because the problem has existed since kit-Kat

Also for the record I've tried the freezing talk back app & other stuff. Some extras I've tired include singing classic songs to my phone, installing jelly bean wallpapers & recently I've tried holding my breath whilst blinking rapidly. Nothing works lmao

I feel your pain, man. A lot of digital ink's been spent on this. No one seems to have been able to fix this. I think it's a problem with TouchWiz. I was actually curious to see whether the 6/6 Edge still had this problem but I haven't had luck finding a video where someone pulled up the recent apps menu. Frankly, I don't think this is going to be fixed for our device anytime soon, if at all -- heck, many Note 4 users don't even have Lollipop yet.
I even tried looking for a recent apps substitute and mapping the button to my recent apps button but couldn't make it work.

yesterday i had the chance to play with demo unit galaxy s6 and i can assure you the recent app button is very smooth and flawless. By the way the S6 is running LP 5.0.2 .

Awesome. Was the home button made of steel and glass instead of plastic?

I played with a Galaxy A3 and A5 which are low-mid range phones that have their recent apps button working flawless on Kitkat. Yesterday played with both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and the Recent Apps button is flawless. Maybe if someone ports a Galaxy S6 Rom over to the Note 4 then we can say goodbye to this problem. Touchwiz is meant to be toned down and lighter on resources on the Galaxy S6.

Disable the talkback service in application manager, will fix your problem

Recent apps faster
The only way is turn off multi window and freeze talkback.
It Sick but there's no other way.
I turn multiwindow back on when i need it

I can't believe it's so simple... I did exactly that and now my alb95 3.5 rom is perfect! Thank you!

The launcher redraws are killing me.

Hi
Before I start let me tell you that I just love this phone. It's amazing and super snappy.. Almost.
However the launcher redraws are so bad on this one.
Now this is my first Android cell, so I'm not sure if it's a Android issue or S3 issue.
Just a simple scenario. If I go to Play Store browse some apps, see few videos for say 5 mins max and hit the Home button, the launcher would redraw.
It easily takes about 5-6 seconds. Sometimes the home screen would appear in a second but If I hit the app drawer button, it would load for almost 4-5 embarrassing.
Now I know there are few solutions posted for it, but frankly I paid Samsung to do that for me. And to a noob like me, it's not very simple.
It's unbelievable how bad the problem is.
I think just locking it in the Memory, would solve the issue.
Why hasn't Samsung fixed it yet?
It's embarrassing that my old iTouch (I hate Apple btw.) could get out of heavy games within a second.
Why is this beast so laggy? Everyday I face this issue for 5-6 times.
It's driving me mad.
To be honest everytime I browse from more than 10 mins, I feel scared.
Will Sammy ever fix it or the only option is to go through the complex process posted in some other thread.
I'm seriously disappointed in this regard.
I'm on stock ICS, rooted btw.

Root and update now, or wait and update later.
Understand your pain bro...
I used to get some hard core redraws until I froze a bunch of apps I didn't need.. boom now the max redraw I'd have would take like 1sec and that's always the wether widget.

I agree, seems odd to me that samsung didn't lock TW into memory. I'm using Apex and while the problem isn't fully gone, it's much better than it was. They should have done a better job with the stock launcher imo.

I've also disabled lots of sammy apps (not frozen them).
Can you tell the main culpits?
I haven't had a launcher redraw since 1974 (ok, slight exaggeration). I have always rooted (there are lots of fixes for redrawers) but yes, JB fixes it.
I also downloaded Ram Manager Pro, as it has a "lock launcher in memory" option.
WHile that might have helped ( or just placebo) , but the problem is still there and I'm facing it a lot of times.

Are you using a custom Rom or still on stock? How about kernel? If you are rooted you can use titanium backup to freeze a lot of apps which will free up available RAM reducing redraws.
Use all in one toolbox. Goto boot speed up and see what 3rd party crap app is taking up your resources on boot up.

Really don't want any other ROm or Kernal as I'm quite satisfied with the Stock ones.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I do not think it'll solve the issue.
Also I want all the bells and whistles. What's the point of this mighty hardware if I have to turn off the animations and fancy stuff.
I might just get a basic Android phone.

you don't sound happy with stock, maybe you should have a go at the latest LI5 jb leaks, the odin version seems to me to be the easiest way, takes about 5 mins literally.
Rumour has it that the official will be out sometime this week as an official update, but only on international roms i think.
I think if you want to update officially, you would need to flash via ODIN the international version of ICS which is Samsung official, and that will update when the time is right. if you are on a specific carrier version then they might take a while longer to push the updates to you! (at least that is what i am led to believe!)
By the way, i have never experienced any redraw problems from TW either on galaxy s2 or s3 using stock or custom roms. the JB roms are really smooth too.

Latest leaked JellyBean ROMs give 100 MB more available RAM, which is desperately needed on this phone. Should ease your redraw problems. Try it out.

Not sure why you people have all of these problems? maybe its an app you have installed or something? I dont get any 5 second redraws or browser crashing.

Anyone else noticing lag?

Picked up the Note 3 yesterday and so far I'm loving it, however, there have been a handful of times where the device has lagged or momentarily froze. Not only does it hang, but the app crashes too. This has happened with the built-in Samsung apps.
If I remember correctly, I was bouncing around my home screen and app drawer (TouchWiz). I specifically remember swiping up from the bottom to open Flipboard, it hung, then I got a message stating My Magazine has crashed and stopped..
This is not what I was expecting from my new Note 3 :crying:
EDIT: Also, the screen doesn't come on instantly when I click the lock button. There's usually a slight delay.
yeah i get minor lag every now and then but i find that normal as i have ALOT of apps running... i was haing tw home FC, i think it FCed 3 or 4 times didnt happen again but i still uninstalled it via tibu cuz i am using nova instead... as for the waking lag yeah i get that sometimes as well but not all the time.... some widgets like the clock widget i have on my homscreen/lockscreen take 5-10 secs to load...
PS- btw this question belongs in the Q&A section, not the general section

It all depends on your definition of "lag." There's the occasional stutter or drag working with or within certain apps or combination of apps but for the most part the N3's incredibly fluid. Everyone here uses a different combination of apps with some varying in quality from outdated crap to highly polished. So everyone's experiences are going to be different. That, along with different wireless and sync environments, is why people’s battery stats are all over the place.
I have 131 apps on my device and haven't experienced a FC or any strange behavior and I've been using the phone for almost two weeks.

I know "lag" is a very subjective term, so I'll try to give you a specific example I just experienced:
Browsing in Facebook, I open someone's photostream. I click a photo and nothing happens. I click an album and it highlights, but doesn't open. Click another picture.. nothing. So I lock the screen and unlock it and it works.
This has also happened when browsing through Google Play and trying to download apps. I search, click the app, but it doesn't open. It just highlights the item I clicked.

I haven't seen one of the Samsung apps crash on me since yesterday, but then again, I haven't used my phone much today, and I'm using Nova instead of the TouchWiz launcher.
very occasionally touch barely works , only spen works. reboot clears it.
very rarely also I get an app hang or Fc, not even rooted yet. but overall runs like a dream.
I know if this was a custom or ASOP ROM, I wouldnt have those issues.

letsgophilly, do you have the octa version?
or the snapdragon 800?
The Snapdragon 800 is super fluid for me.
You might need to wait until Samsung brings the HMP update to the octa variant if you have it.
---------- Post added at 01:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:52 PM ----------
PS: the item highlight issue in the PlayStore is a playstore bug and is not "lag".
The fix is clicking another item, going back and reselecting what you originally wanted.
This happens occasionally.

I'm looking in the About Phone section but I don't see anything regarding the CPU. I believe it's the Snapdragon 800. I'm in the United States. Verizon is my carrier.
I'm thinking this "lag" is due to software bugs like you mentioned.

You have the S800 version.
Bugs it is then, Google will have to fix the playstore, also Samsung has to fix that "My Magazine" thing, I mean it runs fast but the first load and the updating is quite slow and buggy.
Other than that, It's fast everywhere I noticed, and it should be with that hardware.

There's no such thing as a "SM-900" or "SM-9005" ROM. Each regional ROM is different and can have different versions of Samsung's own apps and third party apps that are bundled with it. So one region could have force closes out-of-the-box while another doesn't.
I'll give you an example. When the N10.1 came out people were complaining they couldn't import PDFs in to S Note. After researching it, based on region, there were almost a dozen different versions of S Note used in the various ROMs Samsung deployed worldwide. Two of those versions were borked and couldn’t import PDFs. And that was within 90 days of the N10.1's release. So it's very possible that the strange behavior people are reporting could be regional. OP and I both have U.S. versions of the SM-9005 but are on two different carriers. So if he's experiencing the behavior he described after a hard reset it's probably something unique to his carrier's (Verizon) version of the s/w.
Well then, poor exynos buyers, I was tempted to get one for that lone reason, no I don't regret passing it at all and getting the 9005.

Can you confirm a wake lag?
This was an issue on the Note II as well. Even when disabling S-Wake and all that stuff, it still had a delay.
I was always led to believe it was a "feature" of the exynos with the way it handled sleeping. I was hoping that the Qualcomm processor would not have this issue???

I definitely see wake lag. I just clicked my home button and the display turned on almost a full second later.
I have power button lag. Takes a full second after pressing the power button to sleep sometimes. Clearing processes from RAM usually solves this.

Loving the N3 but to be honest the N2 was the best phone I ever owned it's still like new and flies. I remember lots of similar stories with the early N2 having problems. Maybe there are hood and bad ones. The N2 is the first phone I haven't rooted or used a launcher on. Tried, next. Apex. Nova, Themer, and aviate so far on the N3. give the n3 a chance to receive a few updates before you make up your mind. also could be initial hardware that is faulty, the very first note 2 i got had quite a few issues. sold and bought a new one few months later and that one lasted me until n3.
Just as a thought maybe a 4.3 android thing, I know when my old N7 got 4.3 it was not as stable as the previous version, also my note 8.0 and note 2 are fast more stable than my Note 3. Unloaded a load of app today and it seems better, it is fast and I am sure Samsung will issue updates. Be interesting to see how the N2 and S4 deal with version 4.3

The recent button delay is true. It's there and I haven't seen a way to fix it yet but this is the only one. The phone should perform outstanding in every way.
There's even a speed test video of the exynos version against the iphone 6+ and the note is right up there even with ultra heavy TW.

If you are planning on buying it in only 6 months, you'll have plenty of time to research, go to the store check it for yourself, play with your friend's device and there will be tons of videos comparing the note with other phones.

If you are planning on buying it in only 6 months, you'll have plenty of time to research, go to the store check it for yourself, play with your friend's device and there will be tons of videos comparing the note with other phones.

the thing is i had galaxy S2 for about 20 months, now i have S4 for a year, the note 4 doesnt look that better in the day to day performance...its the same TW...i checked htc one m8 but the camera is really bad, xperia z3...its ui looks outdated, G3...they say it lags and the battery not that good, thats the problem there is really no complete phone....note 4 is the best all around...but that lag when switching between apps kills it just like my S4....
dont buy it.
you sound like the type of person that finds faults with everything.
This is what custom roms are for, the phone itself is a powerhouse but Samsung insists that it keeps using its laggy TW on everything, put stock android on it and i bet the thing would fly.
As stated above, it seems like you do find fault in every single thing. But yes, the Note 4 lags because well touchwiz lags. I went to multiple bestbuy to try it out and it is the same touchwiz lag. But of course, upon placing other launchers and some tweaks (assuming you are going to root) all should be well.
I understand you man, I want the perfect phone too! But sadly, they are not computers which you can choose every single component of it. So you need to research and you'll find the one that best suits your needs. The note 4 will be FAR better than your s4. Faster, bigger battery, better camera, insane ppi, bigger screen.... You can flash a new rom, use a different launcher, apply tweaks or wait for the next nexus which will be huge and pure android. There are tons of options out there

This is android... u can modify or customise it at all time. Once u did, u will tell the difference. There is no perfect hardware and neither software, but Android gives u a freedom platform to configure your own phone. This is the reason why people choose Android.

Good Lord, the phone's not even in many people's hands yet. Phones on the floor of a super-store like Best Buy are horrible examples to go by. My BB has them all running in demo mode which tells you nothing but, assuming other BB's have them running in "real" mode, who knows what kind of crap's been loaded on them and how many people have screwed with the settings. According to people on its forum my Note 3 lags horribly. News to me and I've had it for a year with 152 apps running on it.
As for the G3, please. It never should have been released with S-801/QHD, it throttles to save battery, and still gets absolutely awful battery life anyway. I can't see how the Note 4 (or any S-805 and up phone) could possibly do worse.
thanks for the help....i do hope samsung fix the lag because thats the only reason many people wont buy it....i still have about 6 months to research...so ill wait
Try disabling svoice
It's called Turbo Lag. :silly:

If that lag you speak of happens when you "long press" the home button
(recent apps) then it's not really a lag at all, it only seems like it due to the
fact that the home button needs a long press to bring up the recent apps.
The solution for this is to get rid of the default touchwiz launcher and
get a launcher which has the option of re-assigning the home/back/menu
keys so after the "recent apps" are assigned to use the "menu softkey" or
the "back softkey" using a single click then you will find no more lags in
bringing up the "recent apps" or switching tasks.
Good luck!

First your not even buying a phone for half a year lol. Its been said dozens of times, if not hundreds that this version of TW is cleaned up and smoother then ever...geez! Just read. This is arguably the most powerful and fastest phone to date. Every phone has some sort of lag somewhere in the UI..get a grip. Not every TW user. I have a Note 2 that I am fairly happy with, and don't really notice lag. Its a matter of if you focus on it, you will notice it.
Maybe Samsung isn't for you if your not happy with it. There are other options.
I'm sure if you take a close look at the note4 you can see it has a back, home and recents button. sorry about that just though i should correct that. It doesn't use home button long press. That said, I saw android authority review of it and did not see any lag that Op speaks of.

Lag after 5.1.1 update

My note 4 used to be smooth , in fact it was the smoothest device i have ever seen but after update all gone and it return to be samsung device again with all lags and bugs , any scrolling in any part of the phone even in apps must have lags , anyone have this problem and can help ?

Firstly, did you update via Odin from a stock rom or from a custom rom? You may want to backup the stuff on your internal storage (such as Whatsapp chats, photos, music, videos, app data etc) using Carbon, booting into recovery after updating using Odin and selecting full wipe and wipe cache. That should fix your problems but of course it'll wipe EVERYTHING on your phone.
EDIT: Not literally "everything", just your personal data. "Everything" that you added since you got it.
Yes i updated with odin from stock rom
Did full wipe after that then did full wipe again after discovering this lag but still no difference

Everything? It won't delete OS, it's not formatting And the fact some people have problems with notification panel's lag and some not maybe is caused by a rubbish in system files, which is not deleted during reflashing ROM? (just my theory)
But for now, if you don't want to have that lag try to change the unlocking method from fingerprint to any other.
The lag still remains unresolved after updating to 5.1.1
Sometimes, there is a massive lag when pulling down the notifications bar. And sometimes when I press the multi task button, it doesn't show up until I exit the app, then only it will pop up. While using my device, all f a sudden, the phone locks itself and brings me back to my lock screen. Sometimes, waking and locking the phone also lags.
Am I the only one experiencing this? Or is there more people that experience what I'm going through?

i have exactly the same problems 5.1.1 is not bug free at all and public wifi at my school doesnt work with 5.1.1 touchwiz but AOSP 5.1.1 ROM doesnt have any of that problems so i think samsung will realese some minor update in the future to fix all of this bugs.

That's strange, as honestly, in the last hours since I installed 5.1.1 my Note 4 910C *finally* feels like the premium device experice I've been wanting.
I've loved the phone since I got it at launch, coming from a Galaxy S2, but it's only today that it absolutely flies. Zero lag. Fantastic RAM management. Ultra responsive across the board.
I didn't even do a factory reset after the install, which I almost always do ... just haven't felt the need and since its running so beautifully right now I don't want to mess with it.
5.1.1 has been the single best update in its lifespan thus far.

Find a solution to minimise this lag , i flashed the stock rom 5.0 after a factory reset then let the phone update to 5.1.1 OTA , the lag not go away but at least it minimised

i used odin to flash.. i had lag after that so i wiped the cache partition.. nothing else..

S8 is much slower than the Google Pixel?

Hi all,
Just switched to the s8 from a google pixel.
Beautiful phone, but if is noticeably slower, in many ways:
1. Poor screen responsiveness of the keyboard. Typing on SwiftKey is slower on the s8 than the pixel. It seems that take a split second longer to recognise the touch.
2. Scrolling stuttering. The pixel's scrolling is buttery smooth. The s8 seems to be seriously slopping frames for something as simple as scrolling a page of text on chrome!
3. App switcher. It's really very jelly compared to the buttery smooth Pixel.
Anyone else experienced these issues, and /or have any thoughts?
I had moments yesterday where my S8 had skipped or stuttered, but it's been perfect today.
No issues here, and I'm no samsung fan boy. I've got iPhone 7 plus, zte axon 7, lg v20, and I've owned nexus devices. But with My track record with samsung I'd know for sure in 2 weeks lol. Happy so far

Has been butter smooth for me and I have not noticed any lag on the keyboard or in any screen. Not sure why you are experiencing such poor performance.
Pixel is bare bones and Samsung is full of features and customization (some useful and others a waste). Samsung is know for bloatware which slows the phone down, but my S8 is fluid.
I noticed the same thing
I noticed a delay with my s8 compared to the pixel xl when I happened to switch between apps on both. To test it out I opened up the same two apps and double tapped the toggle window button. The s8 is slower and not as smooth. There may be an animation speed setting that makes it faster but still seems like it wouldn't be as smooth.
Typing this in noticing swift key going slower too.
My battery is at 15% so maybe something is optimizing it and slowing it down...
Started having problems again. Ironically, similar to the problems that caused me to switch from the S4 to the S8 and to what the OP mentions.. Freezing of apps and high battery draw. Stuttering and slow to switch apps and unlock. Problems with keyboard not recording keystrokes. Then it goes b as back to being perfect again.
There is an update ready, but I'm having flashbacks to the update that locked the S4 down. I know this phone is already locked down more than the S4 ever was, but still...
No problems here. It's really fast. Faster than my old S6 Edge.

Yep another week and a half we'll know, hoping it doesn't. But if it's going to I hope its before my return window. I think samsung finally made a good speedy phone.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get rid of it. (Yet) I'm pretty sure once you set it up to stop updates it doesn't show up. But same with my case I didn't know the update was going to break bixby button so I stopped it when I found out. Now mine shows, and I've tried to get rid of it by blocking its notifications thru holding down on it and going to its settings. But it still shows up. I'm still working on a work around to get rid of it. Once I do I'll let you know.

I can't remember if we can just download it and then once it offers to install maybe we could ignore it but I forgot if that was the case for 7.0 update for s7e
I'm getting stuttery scrolling across various apps. Some are smooth though, and others more like a mid-range phone from a few years ago - not what you'd expect from a flagship device today.
I'm experiencing the stuttering apps. As mentioned in this thread, disabling window animations has helped with this experience.
This is my first android phone since the HTC one X.
Can we expect any custome ROMs? Or updates to improve performance?

Not all apps are created equal, some are smoother than others simply because they're written differently.
