Before I start let me tell you that I just love this phone. It's amazing and super snappy.. Almost.
However the launcher redraws are so bad on this one.
Now this is my first Android cell, so I'm not sure if it's a Android issue or S3 issue.
Just a simple scenario. If I go to Play Store browse some apps, see few videos for say 5 mins max and hit the Home button, the launcher would redraw.
It easily takes about 5-6 seconds. Sometimes the home screen would appear in a second but If I hit the app drawer button, it would load for almost 4-5 embarrassing.
Now I know there are few solutions posted for it, but frankly I paid Samsung to do that for me. And to a noob like me, it's not very simple.
It's unbelievable how bad the problem is.
I think just locking it in the Memory, would solve the issue.
Why hasn't Samsung fixed it yet?
It's embarrassing that my old iTouch (I hate Apple btw.) could get out of heavy games within a second.
Why is this beast so laggy? Everyday I face this issue for 5-6 times.
It's driving me mad.
To be honest everytime I browse from more than 10 mins, I feel scared.
Will Sammy ever fix it or the only option is to go through the complex process posted in some other thread.
I'm seriously disappointed in this regard.
I'm on stock ICS, rooted btw.

I used to get some hard core redraws until I froze a bunch of apps I didn't need.. boom now the max redraw I'd have would take like 1sec and that's always the wether widget.

I agree, seems odd to me that samsung didn't lock TW into memory. I'm using Apex and while the problem isn't fully gone, it's much better than it was. They should have done a better job with the stock launcher imo.

I've also disabled lots of sammy apps (not frozen them).
Can you tell the main culpits?
I haven't had a launcher redraw since 1974 (ok, slight exaggeration). I have always rooted (there are lots of fixes for redrawers) but yes, JB fixes it.
I also downloaded Ram Manager Pro, as it has a "lock launcher in memory" option.
WHile that might have helped ( or just placebo) , but the problem is still there and I'm facing it a lot of times.

Are you using a custom Rom or still on stock? How about kernel? If you are rooted you can use titanium backup to freeze a lot of apps which will free up available RAM reducing redraws.
Use all in one toolbox. Goto boot speed up and see what 3rd party crap app is taking up your resources on boot up.

I'm rooted, but everything stock. And I intend to keep it that way.
Really don't want any other ROm or Kernal as I'm quite satisfied with the Stock ones.
I use Nova launcher btw.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I do not think it'll solve the issue.
Also I want all the bells and whistles. What's the point of this mighty hardware if I have to turn off the animations and fancy stuff.
I might just get a basic Android phone.

you don't sound happy with stock, maybe you should have a go at the latest LI5 jb leaks, the odin version seems to me to be the easiest way, takes about 5 mins literally.
Rumour has it that the official will be out sometime this week as an official update, but only on international roms i think.
I think if you want to update officially, you would need to flash via ODIN the international version of ICS which is Samsung official, and that will update when the time is right. if you are on a specific carrier version then they might take a while longer to push the updates to you! (at least that is what i am led to believe!)
By the way, i have never experienced any redraw problems from TW either on galaxy s2 or s3 using stock or custom roms. the JB roms are really smooth too.

Latest leaked JellyBean ROMs give 100 MB more available RAM, which is desperately needed on this phone. Should ease your redraw problems. Try it out.

Not sure why you people have all of these problems? maybe its an app you have installed or something? I dont get any 5 second redraws or browser crashing.
Hi everyone, I have recently updated my Galaxy Note N7000 to jellybean through kies. And the phone now is smooth in screen transactions and lot of new features added to Touchwiz, but the phone has become too slow, laggy and unresponsive. Is it happening with every Galaxy Note user or is it just me?
I mean, even the phone app is taking around 5 seconds to load, and sometimes after a call is disconnected the phone dial pad is shown broken, battery backup is reduced now. Black clipping issue still there and for me it looks like it has even become worse now. The back button has become too unrespinsive compared to working on ICS, I mean the back button takes effect after nearly 2 seconds after pressing which was not there in ICS.
Seeing all these issues I feel jellybean is not a worthy upgrade compared to ICS when we see the mobiles working. But jellybean itself is too good to see with new Touchwiz.
Is it happening only with me or is it same to every Galaxy Note N7000 user out there?

I'm on a custom ROM based on the stock JB, and its been smooth for me.
Which version did u flash? Sounds like u need to start again. Full wipe (safe kernel) and reflash. Should fix most issues.

Actually the jb is not bad but i didnt like the TW UI at all. I like the ics version of tw. Rest i like it but still waiting for my regional update.

Same problems here. Phone feels very sluggish since i'm running XXLSZ.

Earlier, 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 were also very unstable, wait, haste is the enemy of perfection.

Same. I agree with you. I will stay on the latest version of ICS for Germany. I think it's N7000XXLRT. Only feature is Multi-Window and new Touch Wiz and Google Now.
Multi-Window - only apps which were optimized
TouchWiz - I always use Apex launcher
Google Now - Lag
I don't feel project butter.

There is something wrong with JellyBean on the Note
my kid's friend just got a S3 Mini and that runs just fine on a duel 1ghz
the note with duel 1.4ghz takes ages to open contacts for example

My exp with JB update was horrible
On the first day I updated my phone with JB (indian JB). I did not even rooted my phone so I used kies for the JB update, for 2 days it was running fine with horrible battery performance and on the third day when I was trying to share wifi for iPad all of a sudden it got switched off and stuck on samsung logo....
power+volume up + middle big (horrible looking button) was not working. My only hope was it was going to download mode. As I only use one number, so it become nightmare for me. After getting help from ThaiDai I was able to flash with GB.
Now I am using GB in these JB days. This note made me feel to switch to iPhone/ sony (previous phone and literally you cannot make any mistake with flashing /rooting because they they provide some excellent PC software to revive your phone).
Here is my side of the story. Downloaded and flash the Indian ROM as soon as it came online in Sammobile. Was working fine for few hours and then it started lagging like crazy. It was so bad that I went to GB, did a full wipe and flashed it again using mobile odin again and the same result.
Transition from one page to another took around 1 sec. So this time went to GB, full wipe and used Kies to update to JB (updated this morning only). The phone feels fast. Lets see what happens in few days.
The caption of the thread is true to the last letter, overall, compared to gb and ics performances. Here I refer performance, not features.

photo editing problem
None of you have mentioned the problem with photo editor...In the ICS version, one could select part of an image and copy it to another image,which isnt possible anymore..
Also i dont think you can edit a part of an image(color,etc) since u cant select it..any way around this??

i have other problem with jb, s pen. among all the custom rom only sweet rom has s note woking fine, but other rom s note is pretty laggy. Unfortunately all of the rom still have problem with photo note and s planner(using s spen) it is so laggy(not responsive) i dont use s pen that much but just curious to know if anybody can fix it cuz jb is suppose to be butter smooth right?

My Note is after update on JB slow and laggy and make me crazy. :crying:
I tried speedmode kernels an d impovements are almost non noticable.
Almost all the problems mentioned here by everyone is true. I hope these problems are rectified in the 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 update. And seeing the news that Galaxy Note 1 will no longer be updated more than to 4.2.2 makes me feel even bad. Anyway I will thank samsung for giving jellybean at most, but, the worst part of Samsung is that it gave a very buggy jellybean update. Looks like, some how Samsung just wants to get rid of previous flagship devices.
I don't know about others but somehow I kind of like the new TW interface. Folders look pretty neat now compared to boxes in ICS. camera is a bit quicker now. Sound output from speaker is REDUCED (why???). Google Now works fine for me, even on 2G speeds Google now responds perfectly but obviously it takes little more time than on 3G. Gallery looks pretty but takes time to load every time even after being on running apps list. Radio (FM) works fine. Black clipping issue still there and is more worse than previously noticed (anyone agree on this? Or is it just me).
Multi-window supports third party apps as well, not just samsung inbuilt apps(that's good).
I am attaching screen shots of OS version and build number and etc etc with screen shots of third party apps working on multi-window feature.

not sure if this helps, but when I went to ICS I had similar probs (V.V.V.laggy) on the GB rom and samsung support suggested a hard / full reset and that solved it.
has anyone tried that? just dont forget to backup!

Hard reset and FORMAT internal memory(in settings). It's laggy only at the beginning.

Can anyone guide us noobs and un-initiated S4 owners on how to get stock android on the device and the best samsung apps like the dual camera shot etc working?
I am not a fan of the lag at all. I hate that samsung phones are so sluggish despite their claims of the fastest processors around.
NOTHING BEATS THE NEXUS 4 HANDS DOWN..
Perhaps we can achieve close to the Nexus 4 benchmarks with getting the S4 down to the bare minimum?
Any thoughts?

Benchmarks dont mean jack. If your after numbers go get a Nexus 4. Either use AOSP or a very refined TouchWiz ROM. Also, I must be the only person here in XDA that doesn't have a "laggy" Galaxy S4. My "last year" Note II doesn't even lag so I should see no problem with yours. Maybe its ther user than the phone? Turn S Voice off and make the animation scales all at 0.5x.

I'd like to keep the S4 thanks. The Nexus 4 benchmarks is not what I am after. What I am after is a fast OS which does not lag when moving from screen to screen or doing just the basic functions like going to the call or text app. Have you seen the time it takes to render the photos that the phone itself has taken?
Hit the home button, there is always a half a second lag no matter what.
All animations and S Voice turned off.
Yes, it seems like its the user not the phone in your case too. Have you ever owned a Nexus 4?

No lag for me too. Stock Rom. I normally root and start messing as soon as I get a phone but just ha dot felt the need so far, and I got it on launch day!

I am quite surprised by the responses here.
Since no one has disputed the liquidity and smoothness of the Nexus 4, let me re-phrase my question.
How can we get the S4 to be as fast as the Nexus 4?
I would like to keep the S4 but I want to be as fast as the Nexus 4.
1. Fast fluid response to swiping home sceen
2. no lag when you press apps icon
3. no lag on swiping apps
4. no lag when you press home button
5. no lag in rendering photos in gallery (when you swipe to a new picture, it is blurry for a second or 2 while it renders and then shows full resolution)
6. no lag in phone and messaging apps
All animation fixes and S_voice already done but lag still experienced.
Please advise.

Why would he do that when the S4 has significantly higher results in all benchmarks?
Im confused as well I am sorry I do not understand why you would want the S4 to be like the Nexus when the S4 has no issues I have 3 S4s they are all smooth with no lag and run fast between screens going on the web all is well here..........I haven't even rooted my phone yet lol

I think you fail to realise that there is a significant lag in all S4s, you are immune to it because you don't know any better.

Just recently got my shiny new S4 in arctic blue great, I know a bit about rooting and installing custom roms as I've done it to a fair few phones in the past but with my S3 I know there were a few issues with the bug and the older phones dying also with the samsungs there is the flash counter and modified issue so here's my question/s.
Currently what is the easiest method of rooting and installing philz recovery, I'm looking at installing the omega or foxhound rom/s.
Once done will this increase my flash counter and also place my phone in modified?, if so can I set this back after doing the above, so if I do have a problem its just basically installing a stock rom again.

BTW I did first purchase the black mist and noticed that it had a heating problem I even sent it back to samsung but they said that it was fine, then sold and bought the blue version this is exactly the same if not worse and on antutu stability test the phone went upto almost 40 degrees, is this normal?.

Do you have the I9500? That has an issue with overheating. However 40 degrees is not an unreasonable for a processor / GPU being pushed hard. It may seem hot, and it's not great for the battery but it is not out of any reasonable bounds. Mine is I9505 and playing vice city etc. it gets damn warm!
Flash counter can be countered with Triangle Away.
Easiest: just search.

Hi,
I have the UK i9505 version, had it in black mist thought there was an overheating problem, also had battery drain and it seemed laggy, so I sent off to Samsung, they basically said it was fine and the S4 gets warm from time to time which is normal. I ended up selling it and buying an Arctic Blue i9505 but it basically is the same. I cant believe a flagship phone with a 2gb ram and quadcore is laggy at times and I would honestly say slower than some dualcore phones i've had.
I love the S4's screen the camera is good quality but again takes an age to open and shoot, hence I'm hoping that a custom rom may fix a lot of these problems?.
I've had S3 & S4, HTC one and Iphone 5, all have their good and bad points shame there isnt a phone out there with, S4's camera quality (iphones speed), Iphone's speed and fluidity UI, HTC's speakers and style (superb) and S4's screen with iphones brightness, and S4's removable back with SD slot.
Someone please bring out .
With triangle away, if I root and install a recovery does this increase the flash counter and change the phone to modified?.
I will use search I always do just find asking the question easier, things like one click rooting and recovery are sometimes hard to find and you end up rooting manually and installing recovery etc when there are newer and easier tools out.

The FAQ at the top has root instructions, probably the easiest way to do it. The i9505 shouldn't overheat, but defects do happen.
What exactly is slow, I've found this blazingly fast compared to my nexus 4 and comparable to HTC one? iOS is optimised and always looks and feels smoother to me.
A few things I found speeded things up:
1) Turn off the unlock animation. That is just laggy.
2) Enable developer options and change all windows animations to 0.5. Feels snappier to me.
3) Do not use task killers at all.
4) Factory reset after update
5) Turn off smart stay etc if not in use, same for multi window.
Triangle away should set you back on the counter and there is a post on how to unroot and return to 'original' status. I just don't have the link to hand (in work and BUSY!)

Well i've had 2 now both from phones4u new and its definitely hot at times both got warm with things like using camera and youtube, running videos etc. Surely I cant be unlucky enough to have had 2 defective units?.
I've also had the nexus 4 and that was fluid compared to this, i've tried using nova launcher but still not smooth, I don't use any samsung gimmicks and have heard about the animation will try that now, my wifes GS3 is smoother in my opinion.
I really didnt want to root and custom flash tbh just because if it is faulty and was to die on me and don't want to have the problem with possibly not being able to reset counter, hence the reason for asking peps out there to make double sure that its pretty easy to do. Samsung were absolutely crap when I contacted them about my first black mist S4, I used it on GPS satnav for 3 hours to get to airport for hols I had it charging in car also at the end it was boiling, as such the metal surround slightly moved and the phone had gaps on the side Samsung said this was fine and the heating was fine!!, the phone was only 5 weeks old, and it even had intermittent restarting problems and battery drain which I mentioned I couldnt believe their CS.

I think it may be 'technically' ok, but if you are getting a poor user experience you are completely right to return it. I do find it very warm but not overly so compared to other devices.
Where are you getting the slowdown / lag on the device? It's possible I'm just accustomed to it, but after the last update I found things a lot better. (I'm in Ireland so I'd say were using the same device, mine's black too!) There's a difference between lag/choppy frame rate/ slow down and it's not clear where your issue is. I've seen a lot of mention of lag but compared to my other devices I find this pretty nippy. Perception of it is what it comes down to. Some iPhones are slower but appear far faster due to smooth animations etc. The 0.5x did help me and it 'feels' faster loading apps etc. I do agree the HTC One feels smoother and more fluid, that seems to be down to Sense 5 more than anything, rather than actual loading times in milliseconds as it were.
I found nove VERY slow upon boot up but it 'settled' after a few minutes running.
I basically found tw to be jerky especially when you first put the screen on, things like widgets take a bit to load app drawer sometimes also lags a bit. Also internet browsing and scrolling is def jerky.
Ive got the arctic blue version now and love the look and feel of the phone. Just ran antutu benchmark again and its weird I keep getting different benchmark scores last one was 21500 prior to that almost 26000 why? My other s4 was the same inconsistent benchmarks. Also stability test showed heat started at 30 degrees and again just kept on rising to almost 40, plus worryingly it dipped from 140 to 70 in stability a few times.
Could you do me a massive favour and run antutu on your s4 and let me know what results you get out of curiosity. Im running latest stock firmware.

2425 but it varies. The benchmarks are not reliable at all. And there's the whole Samsung benchmark debacle, it gets very hot as there's no thermal limiting. 48 Celsius!!
That doesn't sound right at all with the lag and widgets. Sounds like task manager is killing everything out something is pulling resources.
Factory reset? Are you running a rom or stock? Rooted?

Many thanks for doing that ross, 48 degrees! mine is cool then at 40, im running latest stock, I have factory reset although the animation at 0.5 has made it a bit smoother, thanks for the tip.
I havent installed any task killer or anything like that and just a few apps that dont run in background.
Hence was really hoping a custom rom would help with heating and speed, weird thing is with my black one it ran more smoothly in power saving mode almost like when on full power the processor gets hot and throttles??.

I'm a bit out of ideas. I'll have a think. Have a look at how you use it, in direct sunlight all day, in a case that traps heat etc. Weird to get two that are like that, but not unheard of.
Get a battery app or widget and screen shot every now and then as proof if you need to return it.

Thanks ross, np yes im going to test more ive still got few days left on 28 day return so will make my mind up then unsure how good phones 4u are on replacements though. With regards to the heat if your is 48 then they must all run hot on antutu?.

All variants of the S4 run hot ... the gt i9500 a bit more especially with the first firmware ... updates made things considerably better ...
I don't think that u have a defective phone ... it's just the way S4 works since u also return one and they said it's fine, chance is it was actually fine according to the S4 standards ... antutu runs at max freq so it's normal to get hot ... also battery drainage can occur from many different things ... the most common one is apps sync in the background especially when this is done with 3G/LTE ...
If u are a heavy user and u don't like the heat maybe u should consider another phone ... or buy a case ...

I dont mind it running hot as long as I know that everyones s4 is doing the same. If I know everyones is roughly reaching 40 degrees on antutu stability test then fine, but if others are say 32 degrees then thats a big difference and over time my phone would run the risk of damage.
I will post a thread asking for people to post screens and see.

hi guys, first of all i dont have the note 4 but planning on getting one in about half a year, but there is a video i saw on youtube and the note 4 lags in switching between apps just like any other samsung its slower than the G3 and iphone ( no surprise here )....is this lag real?? because if it really have that lag maybe i should buy something else....that you think....??

The recent button delay is true. It's there and I haven't seen a way to fix it yet but this is the only one. The phone should perform outstanding in every way.
There's even a speed test video of the exynos version against the iphone 6+ and the note is right up there even with ultra heavy TW.

If you are planning on buying it in only 6 months, you'll have plenty of time to research, go to the store check it for yourself, play with your friend's device and there will be tons of videos comparing the note with other phones.

the thing is i had galaxy S2 for about 20 months, now i have S4 for a year, the note 4 doesnt look that better in the day to day performance...its the same TW...i checked htc one m8 but the camera is really bad, xperia z3...its ui looks outdated, G3...they say it lags and the battery not that good, thats the problem there is really no complete phone....note 4 is the best all around...but that lag when switching between apps kills it just like my S4....

This is what custom roms are for, the phone itself is a powerhouse but Samsung insists that it keeps using its laggy TW on everything, put stock android on it and i bet the thing would fly.
As stated above, it seems like you do find fault in every single thing. But yes, the Note 4 lags because well touchwiz lags. I went to multiple bestbuy to try it out and it is the same touchwiz lag. But of course, upon placing other launchers and some tweaks (assuming you are going to root) all should be well.
I understand you man, I want the perfect phone too! But sadly, they are not computers which you can choose every single component of it. So you need to research and you'll find the one that best suits your needs. The note 4 will be FAR better than your s4. Faster, bigger battery, better camera, insane ppi, bigger screen.... You can flash a new rom, use a different launcher, apply tweaks or wait for the next nexus which will be huge and pure android. There are tons of options out there

This is android... u can modify or customise it at all time. Once u did, u will tell the difference. There is no perfect hardware and neither software, but Android gives u a freedom platform to configure your own phone. This is the reason why people choose Android.

Good Lord, the phone's not even in many people's hands yet. Phones on the floor of a super-store like Best Buy are horrible examples to go by. My BB has them all running in demo mode which tells you nothing but, assuming other BB's have them running in "real" mode, who knows what kind of crap's been loaded on them and how many people have screwed with the settings. According to people on its forum my Note 3 lags horribly. News to me and I've had it for a year with 152 apps running on it.
As for the G3, please. It never should have been released with S-801/QHD, it throttles to save battery, and still gets absolutely awful battery life anyway. I can't see how the Note 4 (or any S-805 and up phone) could possibly do worse.

If that lag you speak of happens when you "long press" the home button
(recent apps) then it's not really a lag at all, it only seems like it due to the
fact that the home button needs a long press to bring up the recent apps.
The solution for this is to get rid of the default touchwiz launcher and
get a launcher which has the option of re-assigning the home/back/menu
keys so after the "recent apps" are assigned to use the "menu softkey" or
the "back softkey" using a single click then you will find no more lags in
bringing up the "recent apps" or switching tasks.

First your not even buying a phone for half a year lol. Its been said dozens of times, if not hundreds that this version of TW is cleaned up and smoother then ever...geez! Just read.This is arguably the most powerful and fastest phone to date. Every phone has some sort of lag somewhere in the UI..get a grip. Like i said, im sure ill see you in the s6 thread crying about something else long before you reach in your pocket to finally upgrade...good luck

Not every TW user. I have a Note 2 that I am fairly happy with, and don't really notice lag. Its a matter of if you focus on it, you will notice it.
Maybe Samsung isn't for you if your not happy with it. There are other options.
I'm sure if you take a close look at the note4 you can see it has a back,home and recents button. sorry about that just though i should correct that. It doesn't use home button long press. That said, I saw android authority review of it and did not see any lag that Op speaks of.
