Hi can you give any advice please - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Just recently got my shiny new S4 in arctic blue great, I know a bit about rooting and installing custom roms as I've done it to a fair few phones in the past but with my S3 I know there were a few issues with the bug and the older phones dying also with the samsungs there is the flash counter and modified issue so here's my question/s.
Currently what is the easiest method of rooting and installing philz recovery, I'm looking at installing the omega or foxhound rom/s.
Once done will this increase my flash counter and also place my phone in modified?, if so can I set this back after doing the above, so if I do have a problem its just basically installing a stock rom again.
Thanks guys
BTW I did first purchase the black mist and noticed that it had a heating problem I even sent it back to samsung but they said that it was fine, then sold and bought the blue version this is exactly the same if not worse and on antutu stability test the phone went upto almost 40 degrees, is this normal?.

Do you have the I9500? That has an issue with overheating. However 40 degrees is not an unreasonable for a processor / GPU being pushed hard. It may seem hot, and it's not great for the battery but it is not out of any reasonable bounds. Mine is I9505 and playing vice city etc. it gets damn warm!
Flash counter can be countered with Triangle Away.
Easiest: just search.
Actually all of your questions are answered several times on here, use the search function!
At the top of the forum you just posted on is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762 start there.

Hi,
I have the UK i9505 version, had it in black mist thought there was an overheating problem, also had battery drain and it seemed laggy, so I sent off to Samsung, they basically said it was fine and the S4 gets warm from time to time which is normal. I ended up selling it and buying an Arctic Blue i9505 but it basically is the same. I cant believe a flagship phone with a 2gb ram and quadcore is laggy at times and I would honestly say slower than some dualcore phones i've had.
I love the S4's screen the camera is good quality but again takes an age to open and shoot, hence I'm hoping that a custom rom may fix a lot of these problems?.
I've had S3 & S4, HTC one and Iphone 5, all have their good and bad points shame there isnt a phone out there with, S4's camera quality (iphones speed), Iphone's speed and fluidity UI, HTC's speakers and style (superb) and S4's screen with iphones brightness, and S4's removable back with SD slot.
Someone please bring out .
With triangle away, if I root and install a recovery does this increase the flash counter and change the phone to modified?.
I will use search I always do just find asking the question easier, things like one click rooting and recovery are sometimes hard to find and you end up rooting manually and installing recovery etc when there are newer and easier tools out.
Thanks
Mav

The FAQ at the top has root instructions, probably the easiest way to do it. The i9505 shouldn't overheat, but defects do happen.
What exactly is slow, I've found this blazingly fast compared to my nexus 4 and comparable to HTC one? iOS is optimised and always looks and feels smoother to me.
A few things I found speeded things up:
1) Turn off the unlock animation. That is just laggy.
2) Enable developer options and change all windows animations to 0.5. Feels snappier to me.
3) Do not use task killers at all.
4) Factory reset after update
5) Turn off smart stay etc if not in use, same for multi window.
Triangle away should set you back on the counter and there is a post on how to unroot and return to 'original' status. I just don't have the link to hand (in work and BUSY!)
Best of luck!

Thanks Ross,
Well i've had 2 now both from phones4u new and its definitely hot at times both got warm with things like using camera and youtube, running videos etc. Surely I cant be unlucky enough to have had 2 defective units?.
I've also had the nexus 4 and that was fluid compared to this, i've tried using nova launcher but still not smooth, I don't use any samsung gimmicks and have heard about the animation will try that now, my wifes GS3 is smoother in my opinion.
I really didnt want to root and custom flash tbh just because if it is faulty and was to die on me and don't want to have the problem with possibly not being able to reset counter, hence the reason for asking peps out there to make double sure that its pretty easy to do. Samsung were absolutely crap when I contacted them about my first black mist S4, I used it on GPS satnav for 3 hours to get to airport for hols I had it charging in car also at the end it was boiling, as such the metal surround slightly moved and the phone had gaps on the side Samsung said this was fine and the heating was fine!!, the phone was only 5 weeks old, and it even had intermittent restarting problems and battery drain which I mentioned I couldnt believe their CS.

I think it may be 'technically' ok, but if you are getting a poor user experience you are completely right to return it. I do find it very warm but not overly so compared to other devices.
Where are you getting the slowdown / lag on the device? It's possible I'm just accustomed to it, but after the last update I found things a lot better. (I'm in Ireland so I'd say were using the same device, mine's black too!) There's a difference between lag/choppy frame rate/ slow down and it's not clear where your issue is. I've seen a lot of mention of lag but compared to my other devices I find this pretty nippy. Perception of it is what it comes down to. Some iPhones are slower but appear far faster due to smooth animations etc. The 0.5x did help me and it 'feels' faster loading apps etc. I do agree the HTC One feels smoother and more fluid, that seems to be down to Sense 5 more than anything, rather than actual loading times in milliseconds as it were.
I found nove VERY slow upon boot up but it 'settled' after a few minutes running.

I basically found tw to be jerky especially when you first put the screen on, things like widgets take a bit to load app drawer sometimes also lags a bit. Also internet browsing and scrolling is def jerky.
Ive got the arctic blue version now and love the look and feel of the phone. Just ran antutu benchmark again and its weird I keep getting different benchmark scores last one was 21500 prior to that almost 26000 why? My other s4 was the same inconsistent benchmarks. Also stability test showed heat started at 30 degrees and again just kept on rising to almost 40, plus worryingly it dipped from 140 to 70 in stability a few times.
Could you do me a massive favour and run antutu on your s4 and let me know what results you get out of curiosity. Im running latest stock firmware.
Thanks

2425 but it varies. The benchmarks are not reliable at all. And there's the whole Samsung benchmark debacle, it gets very hot as there's no thermal limiting. 48 Celsius!!
That doesn't sound right at all with the lag and widgets. Sounds like task manager is killing everything out something is pulling resources.
Factory reset? Are you running a rom or stock? Rooted?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

Many thanks for doing that ross, 48 degrees! mine is cool then at 40, im running latest stock, I have factory reset although the animation at 0.5 has made it a bit smoother, thanks for the tip.
I havent installed any task killer or anything like that and just a few apps that dont run in background.
Hence was really hoping a custom rom would help with heating and speed, weird thing is with my black one it ran more smoothly in power saving mode almost like when on full power the processor gets hot and throttles??.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

I'm a bit out of ideas. I'll have a think. Have a look at how you use it, in direct sunlight all day, in a case that traps heat etc. Weird to get two that are like that, but not unheard of.
Get a battery app or widget and screen shot every now and then as proof if you need to return it.
Sorry can't do more.

Thanks ross, np yes im going to test more ive still got few days left on 28 day return so will make my mind up then unsure how good phones 4u are on replacements though. With regards to the heat if your is 48 then they must all run hot on antutu?.
Thanks again ross

All variants of the S4 run hot ... the gt i9500 a bit more especially with the first firmware ... updates made things considerably better ...
I don't think that u have a defective phone ... it's just the way S4 works since u also return one and they said it's fine, chance is it was actually fine according to the S4 standards ... antutu runs at max freq so it's normal to get hot ... also battery drainage can occur from many different things ... the most common one is apps sync in the background especially when this is done with 3G/LTE ...
If u are a heavy user and u don't like the heat maybe u should consider another phone ... or buy a case ...

Hi
I dont mind it running hot as long as I know that everyones s4 is doing the same. If I know everyones is roughly reaching 40 degrees on antutu stability test then fine, but if others are say 32 degrees then thats a big difference and over time my phone would run the risk of damage.
I will post a thread asking for people to post screens and see.
Thanks fir the reply

SGS 3 days on......

Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.
Plenty of lag and memory fixes available.

is lag really a major issue out of the box?
yeah theres a decent amount of lag out of the box, but TONS of fixes available
About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.
Not only you have no GPS issues but you also have no lag.
Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.
Customers... always so ungrateful and never pleased. /spit.

It also varies based on your applications though. With some applications running, phone can't sleep properly.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.
Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.
It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.
I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.

Why does this thing run so bad?!

Just wondering if its just my tab or just the tab in general, this thing is always freezing n just runs like its a frigin g1, slow! I have the sprint version, anyone else have the same probs?
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
sory to tell dude it's your tab, i gave up my ihone4 & ipad for my tab. it's one of the best devise i ever had, maybe omething is wrong with your tab take it back get an other one.
Got a Tab last night, and even after flashing to the latest ROM it is rather unreliable in terms of performance and lag. I've already experienced several complete lock ups which is more than my Desire has had in 6 months.
So I will be returning mine for a refund tomorrow. Think I'll wait for the v2 with 2.3 or Honeycomb.
Got mine loaded to the gills, and it zips along just fine, not a single lockup.
So there's no way to fix this? I can't take it back cause it wasn't brought new, I did a reset n started all over with it tho but I have these probs... I'm guess the stupid sprint activation thing has somethin to do with it but I can't get rid of it untill I root my device... there's gotta be a reason this thing is messed up?!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I sat in a sprint store playing with their tab for about an hour. I was blown away with the speed of it. If you are not finding the Tab peppy I would look into bringing it back.
I would also say that the sprint tab i was using was a much better experience than the ATT one I bought. I kept saying to myself something is not right here. Then I flashed it and all is good.
Mine was suffering from bad browser lag until I flashed it. I don't have a Sprint Tab though. Mine is T-Mobile. I'm running Roto-JMC. It's very smooth now!!!!
Hmm
i just watced a lagg fixed galaxy s phone on youtube run super super fast.
he said it was about 2700 quadrant score ( iknow its not a good method) i dont even get half of that and my tab is so much slower.
I am keeping it though i really cant see this not getting to the galaxy s smoothness level sometime within the next months, whats your thoughts? will it get as smooth, i mean why would it not? i cant even use flash in any of the browsers except youtube mobile, and i the old desire running hd flash!
it should be able to be soo much smoother with future firmware updates or hacks?
btw. Kindle app on this is like the best e reader ever! if u dont mind only 10 hour batterylife.
I have the Sprint version full stock, and I have no freezing or lagging.
Just a long shot here, but on my Evo I was having some lock-ups out of the blue, and when I finally connected it to my PC via USB, it told me that the SD card had errors. Ran scandisk, fixed the errors, and then everything was back to normal.
i have verizon version and its blazing FAST! however it did reboot a couple of times on me but i am sure its an app i have downloaded not the tab

My Tab runs fantastic. I also have a lag fixed SGS. A lag fix switches from Samsung's proprietary file system to an ext4 file system and therefore will not help general performance, it will namely help loading apps for the first time and saving. After that, you will not be able to see an improvement. This is also why lag fix methods increase the quadrant score.
If you are seeing ANY speed issues with the Tab, you should return it. If you bought it used, you should have got some kind of guarantee... they probably sold it because it was running slowly.
You guys really have to look at the software youre running on your tabs. Mine is running flawlessly and has been almost from day one.
Start by removing bloatware and unnecessary services. Flash to the latest supported firmware using Kies. Use firefox and Dolphin mini as your browsers. Turn on airplane mode + wifi to save battery. Look into a replacement launcher like adw ex or launcherpro. Get no lock to remove the lockscreen. Etc.
Android is all about user imput - if you dont customise it you will never feel its benefits over an ipad!
It's a good idea to try different task managers like the one in ASTRO i.e. and try to catch the faulty one. I found some issues in using the yahoo mail client.
Mean the faulty process that uses much processor time, in above post.
Hmm it is not like i havent done all of the above it is still not as smooth as a galaxy s phone. I really think there is some firmware difference since all danish tabs i have tryed run like this. Tryed 4 my own encluding. In Denmark people are selling tabs allover the place since many regular customers are disappointed. Got mine half price so i am still quiet content but it does lagg and with newest official firmware jj3 via kies. Flash in any browser except youtube mobile is not usable

My Tab is faster than my Galaxy S, has been from day one. My Galaxy S isn't slow, it's running a very fast Froyo rom. My Galaxy S phone is the fastest phone I've ever seen, but it's still not as fast as my Tab.
I haven't rooted my Tab or uninstalled any bloatware or disabled any services. If the Tab were laggy, I would have done all of those things. I haven't because I don't like to mess with what works.
My guess would be that your carrier has something installed that is slowing it down. I can't imagine what, I have tons installed and nothing has ever slowed it down.
That said, Don't use the stock browser, it can be laggy, especially on Flash heavy sites. Try the Miren browser and set Flash to "on demand".
Weird how some people have problems and some dont, I have the Epic also and it flys! But this damn tab is horrible and I too experience the browser lag, restarts, freezing, u name it! I saw that someone did mention they had alot of problems till they rooted and flashed it so if you could be so kindly to share info on what exactly you did it would be appreciated, especially cause others that have flashed didnt have the same outcome... If it dont work for me then its goin on ebay cus as of now this thing is just a paperweight...

My Tab flies with no freezing... Rooted with z4 and use oclf. If i get lag in the Dolphin browser I try this trick I discovered on xda: Hold the power button to get the power off menu, then press the back button to exit that menu. Thats it. Browser will increase in speed and fluidity!

Answer to your first question:
Lag is only happening to your tab or your specific region (tab).
Solution:
Right here
Read through it quickly, bottom contains all the right info for you to flash your tab and get off of that HORRID stock firmware.

[Q] need some advice from everyone on my tablet.

Okay picked my tablet up two days ago from Walmart and I'm having issues.
1. Light bleeding in the right and lest lower corners (landscape mode)
2. Lag while scrolling in apps well choppynes. apps I know work fine they don't do it on my galaxy note 2 or my galaxy s2.
Could the lag issue be the cause of my tablet being on 4.2 so they are tuned for it? Would you guys be willing to test out alps I'm having issues with? I am rooted and have twrp installed I purchased my tablet from Walmart not sure if that matters don't know if they use inferior parts. Now would I return it keep I mean I mister have the best and when my 3 year old phone runs better on alpha there is a problem. Ate there roms to make it run better?

Not seeing those issues. I have tried several tablets over the past year and I am very satisfied with the performance and stability of this tablet See signature below for the rom I am running now. Even with stock there was no lag of any kind. Under the current rom and kernel performance is smooth and stable. I could try some apps for you.

If you can try the xda premium app as well as residentevil.net mobile app then scroll around in the dlc part
my nexus 10 has no light bleed, but it lags, occasionally. this is due to the super high res display. the tablet is pushing more pixels than it could, in the future though i think they'd release an update that further increases performance and optimizes apps to take advantage of that big display. hope this helps

Have xda premium. No lag whatsoever. Very smooth By comparison I had an Asus TF 700 and lag was a regular issue for the same reason the other poster to your question mentioned.
I have no problems with mine. Have you looked at Google Currents? See if the background sync is checked. I disabled mine after reading a bunch of posts regarding it.

Something better for my S5?

I have to say, I am almost done with vendor/carrier Android phones. I have had the S2, LG G2x, S3, HTC One X+, and now the Verizon S5, which was my choice of over the iPhone 5s for my corporate phone.
I have not done anything to my S5 yet, haven't installed a boat load of apps, nor does my company run any fancy, MDM work/play management software, and still this phone already feels bloated after a couple months of use. The lockscreen sometime takes many seconds to show up, only then to immediately disappear before I can even enter my lock pattern or swipe my fingerprint. And boy, does the fingerprint reader really blow compared to the iPhone. Try unlocking the phone while on the go with the fingerprint read... nearly impossible. The camera, wow sometimes takes over 20s to load. I thought going from a 1GB RAM phone to 2GB phone would make a difference. Needless to say the Samsung and Verizon bloatware finds way of eating resources up fast.
I'm stuck with this phone, and once again, it looks like I'll need to root and load a custom ROM to get this POS to run like a respectable smartphone. I'm capable and have done this to all my Android devices before (except my Nexus 7), but quite frankly I am tired of this and all the time I have spent, unlocking, downloading, backing up and loading and unloading ROMs. I only wish, there was a Google Play edition for Verizon or, I should just buy my own Nexus 6 when it comes out.
In meantime, what is the best recommendation of the clean/stripped/no frills ROM that will make my phone run and look most like a Nexus device?
Sorry for the rant, I'm not planning to go over to the fruity side either. So you guys are stuck with me.

First thing I did out of the box was root, install Titanium Backup Pro and freeze everything that was not system dependent. I run supersu and Xposed framework with Wanam and some other modules. The phone has zero lag and the battery life is insanely great ... I've never had an android phone (my 4th) with such incredible battery life. I am so far beyond impressed with this phone it's un-real.
Good point. And my point is, ultimately I am needing to at minimum as you suggest root and freeze with Titanium backup, which at least a bit less of time waste than installing a new ROM. That said, I mind as well while I'm at, since I really don't find anything redeeming about Touchwiz. The bigger point, I can't imagine a non-technical user wanting to do this over-and-over again for each Android phone they get.
I agree battery life is very good, even stock. I'm running in power saving mode. That is the only redeeming quality I have found so far...

Power savings mode throttles down the CPU around 30% and dims the screen. This is no way should cause the lockscreen to take over 5s to pop up or the camera 20s to load. I am not playing any 3D games or anything like this. I'm pretty sure it's just bloated software eating away at the 2GB of RAM.
My HTC One X+ never slowed to a crawl like this on power saving mode. The issue with that phone was the battery life and hence...power savings mode.

Not experiencing any of the problems you have man. INSANE battery life, extremely snappy performance, I personally have grown to like touchwiz alot. Why dont you at the very least just do a fresh flash with stock firmware and it'll fix alot of your issues or go install one of the roms like SLIMHYDE and youll never have those issues again unless the above poster was right and you just have a bad phone, which is easy to get replaced.

Probably only a slight possibility my phone is defective. Usually things speed back up if I reboot the phone. But things slow to crawl usually after about 2 days of use.
I can definitely try to do a clean reset, freeze apps, install new ROM, etc. My point is, I really shouldn't need to do this for a top of line smartphone. Again, the only Android device that hasn't presented these issues and I am happy to run stock is my Nexus 7. I guess I should save some pennies for the Nexus 6 phone...great way to suck more $$ out of me.

I guess my point is , is that very few people are having to do that . That leans more towards a bad device than anything else . Perhaps you have something that is running using system resources ?

Dude, I feel your pain. This will be my last Samsung device because of their dogsh*t software and locked hardware. The phone slows down over time, there is no doubt. The only great thing about the S5 is the hardware, putting CM would have made it by FAR the best phone out.
Regardless, I have rooted and debloated. I have enabled Wifi tethering, enabled voice recording, etc. For the most part I am pretty satisfied right now.
I am waiting for the next version of the LG phone, G4 maybe? Or a clean Google phone on Verizon.

Pretty unimpressed with my S6 (lag, lag, stutter ... )

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?
Is it just me? I am surprised I don't see a ton of people complaining about this
Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.
Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.
Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"
This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.
Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast
No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.
yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.
Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Keep in mind, however, if you do root you will most likely trip the knox counter on your device. This could cause some problems with warranty, and you would not be able to use Samsung pay on the device. If these things don't matter to you. Rooting is okay.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.
My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.
Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

If I understand correctly using the engineering bootloader results in the loss of use of the fingerprint scanner.
