Considering dumping my HD2... bad idea?

I picked up my HD2 almost a week ago, and while at first I was quite pleased, I'm already sick of WM 6.5's buggyness. I did some tweaks to try and improve performance, but without success. I'm still forced to restart my device a few times a day, still getting poor reception, and pretty lame battery life to boot. I'm fairly certain this is mostly due to WM, as the HD2's specs are top notch, and similar handsets running Android are highly acclaimed. To make matters worse, its not likely I'll ever see Android or even WP7 on this device anytime soon, if at all.
So, I now find myself ready to return my HD2 for the MyTouch Slide on Wednesday. Even though it's a pretty large step down in the hardware department, reviews have stated that it's surprisingly responsive. Is there any reason I should stick with the HD2, other than the slight possibility of Android or WP7 and the l33tn3ss of it? I really want to like this phone, but I can't stand all the issues I'm having with WM 6.5. I'm currently running the latest stock ROM, with CHT and minimal apps installed, fwiw.

1st question, do you truly close your programs? Or do they boil and grow in the background? This is likely to be the number cause of your problems.
Also, try using the phone without Sense and see if it gets better for you. Either stick to Titanium or SPB Mobile Shell. I personally use Mobile Shell since I had the phone (played with Sense for 10 minutes and found it impractical for daily use).
Not a single hiccup AT ALL. So.....good luck to you in your decision, but just try my suggestions first.

I hate reading messages like this.
When I first got my HD2 I was very happy with it. I kept it stock for a few weeks, even though I knew that the crashes could be fixed with a change in ROMs.
I don't know why HTC, T-Mobile and Microsoft would release something that clearly has not been field tested in "normal" conditions the way Apple does (see Gizmodo for details on real-world testing of Apple products prior to release).
The good news is that I am now running a great ROM that hasn't crashed on me in over 2 weeks. Not a single crash. I've never had a phone this stable! (See my sig for links)
The bad news is that I had to install a third-party ROM in order to have a useable phone. $500 is a lot of money and it's ridiculous that we have to turn to these boards to get our babies working correctly.
This is the way I feel:
If you want a phone that works 100% the way you want it out of the box, return your HD2 and keep shopping. The phone is waaay too expensive to keep just because it's the latest thing.
If you want an awesome phone that works the way you want it to and don't mind risking your warranty, I'd suggest flashing HSPL and testing some ROMs out. There are some great ROMs here that are so much faster, cleaner, better-looking and more stable than anything you will find on the shelves at T-Mobile. Just remember to tip your chef if you find a ROM that works perfectly on your rig

I actually do make sure to close all my apps when I'm done with them (even keep Task Manager on the first page.) Even with nothing besides Activesync open, I commonly get an error from Opera that "a critical component is missing."
Another bug that really pisses me off, is that when I'm browsing Opera in landscape mode and lock the screen, the lockscreen appears in landscape, and I cannot open it.
I'm mostly disappointed with the fact that this device has some of the most advanced hardware available, and yet it still lags out of the box. Watching videos of the MyTouch Slide running Expresso, I noticed that it is very fast and responsive, despite having much less horsepower under the hood. I really don't want to be forced to disable all of the eye candy or void the warranty installing custom ROMs just to get this "superphone" to run smoothly. On top of all that, it's still unclear if any better OS will be available on this device, either from the manufacturer or the devs here.
Why can't T-Mobile just release their upcoming "Project Emerald" already?

Have you upgraded to opera 10 yet? because I don't get any problems with it. I don't care for the pinch and zoom feature, so that was not a problem for me to upgrade to it. Also the UI is better looking to me and feels more like a desktop.

try opera mini 5. much faster than opera 10 or even opera 9 that comes preinstalled with the phone.
on top of that, why downgrade to the slide? have you tried flashing a custom rom to the hd2?
i know the slide may seem more responsive but please don't judge it by watching 5 minute video. i bet that phone would experience some kind of lag after a week of use. Espresso Sense UI on that slide also hogs a bunch of memory as our own Sense UI for the HD2.
But if you're still thinking of ditching the HD2 for another T-Mobile compatible phone, I'd get the Nexus one instead. It has the same snapdragon processor not to mention it does not have SENSE to slow it down at all. Completely stock android OS.

I really don't understand this "buggyness" that people have with WM6.5 I dont have any issues with WM6.5 the only issues i notice is the HTC sense messaging lag, and the lag that the HTC Peep app creates every time it updates. I had to turn off auto updating on HTC Peep cause that got so annoying.
Some 3rd party apps are particularly bad, I think the worst i have loaded right now is the Win Mobile Foursquare app from Touchality, bloated buggy POS but its the only option on WinMO at the moment
Basically all the issues with WinMo are 3rd party programs which are likely going to cause trouble on any platform, except for the one that doesn't allow real multitasking.

1. all devices come with bugs and problems
2. all snapdragon drains your battery like crazy same with the Evo.What do you expect from a 4.3 inch screen
3. In my case their times an app its the reason for my phone crashing example motweets it slow the crap out of my hd2 it took 10 minutes to remove. putting flash on opera also a few time it crash my browser.
4. for most issues theirs solutions. my advice its to call t-mobile and tell them your phone its crashing alot and tell them you want a replacement and see if that works out for you. if it doesnt sell it if your unhappy.

I installed Opera 10 immediately after getting my HD2, which is the version that keeps crashing/freezing my device. I will try installing Opera Mini 5 and see how that fares, fingers crossed!
I'm also going to flash a custom ROM to my device, and see if that makes things run smoother. Right now I'm thinking the LIA ROM, I just hope it performs as good as it looks.
The reason I'm kinda pressed to make a decision, is because I'm still within my buyer's remorse period, and can return my HD2 if I'm unhappy with it. The next best thing would be the MyTouch Slide, or the Nexus 1 (which is quite a bit more expensive, and I would have to wait for it to ship.) This really doesn't leave me with much in the way of options, at least for now, which is making this decision much harder. If I do end up returning my HD2, I might just use my old RAZR for a bit, and check out "Project Emerald" in the near future. I'm really hoping more info on this gets leaked before my BR period is up.

I felt the same as you after a week or two into it. Crashes, freezes, hiccups, etc...
After installing the latest T-MO ROM Update, along with a few tweaks like Dutty's Task mgr and Cookie's Home Tab editor, CleanRam, too. No lockups for over a week.
I was super close to selling this and getting an N1. But now it's smoothing out for me.

I just got the phone today and have already had a few issues. I know part of it is just do to the fact that I'm not used to it. I hope I can work out some of these bugs. I agree that we shouldn't have to go through these lengths just to get a phone that "just works", but after all the research I did it seems like in the end it will be worth it to have a phone that doesn't have the limits that certain other phones do. I will however be playing with a mytouch slide demo unit when I can just to see how it goes. Initial reviews seem surprisingly good.

I agree, try the nexus 1 out!! I am half tempted to get it myself!!

I took the plunge and did it. I kept having issues with the HD2's sound switching to the earpiece (including when the phone rings, playing transformers, etc.). Because it was brand new, I took it back to get it exchanged. They said they didn't have any more and I'd have to wait for a replacement, so I said **** it and got the mytouch slide. I'm liking it a lot so far. It's very snappy, zippy, cool UI, good keyboard. I think I'll be happy with my choice. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Review/Warning

I just bought an Atrix, and I thought I would post a little review because in all my research before I bought the phone, I did not find one which said what I needed to hear. Hopefully this is useful and objective.
I have owned a OG Droid, Samsung Fascinate, Nexus S, Galaxy S, and this Atrix so I feel like I have good grounds for comparison.
Out of the box...
The Good: The phone's hardware is top notch. The specs are awesome.
The Bad: The Motorola Atrix in completly stock form (the one I bought anyways) is very buggy and laggy. When I first unboxed it and was doing my initial set up and installing a few apps, a number of different programs forced close. The whole experience was slow and frustrating. I would rate Moto Blur as simply horrible and disgusting.
The fact that Motorola was able to take a tegra 2 powered phone with 1GB of DDR2 ram and make it run choppy is beyond me.
With that being said... If you don't know how to or do not plan on rooting, or modifying the software on your phone, I would highly recommended you avoid the Atrix.
If you are a fan of tinkering and modifying, then the Atrix is a great choice.

I have only noticed lag for the first 15-30 seconds after power on. None after that...
Motoblur means nothing to me, and doesn't really seem to slow down my phone. I had lunch with a bunch of other android users, and they were all impressed by the atrix' snappiness...

One thing I remembered when I had the atrix was unlocking the phone and using it was extremely laggy and slow for the first few seconds. I confirmed this with 2 other store demos. If you swipe your finger or do the pattern unlock, try bringing down the notification bar immediately. It'll be slow and choppy but if you wait a couple seconds and then try again, it'll be fine. Always annoyed me at how LONG it took to unlock the phone and get it going compared to every other android phone I've owned.

I have had no issues with performance at all on my device. It's lightning quick. The most impressive for me wasn't the CPU speed, but the file access speed. That thing installs, uninstalls, and loads applications retarded fast. They made a good choice of hardware right there.

The only lag I've noticed is for a few seconds after the initial boot up, which is understandable. To say it is very laggy and buggy is crazy. Perhaps the unit you had was defective.

Sounds like you may have a buggy device... Ive had three of them so far (one was replaced due to what I perceived to be a faulty battery and my wife also uses one). And I've not seen any of the lag you're talking about...
If it was a big enough occurance don't you think you would've read about it on these forums? This place is packed with android super users... no ones having problems like that ...

.... the fingerprint scanner makes it real quick to unlock the phone.... and it's not easy enough to be accidentally pocket-unlocked like some other unlocking systems i've seen.... such as i think HTC's, where you just slide the one thing down. Hell, with the one pair of shorts i have, i was actually able to see the screen on my iPhone 4 when i had it, and unlock it THROUGH THE SHORTS if i wanted to.
And i think it'd be expected for things to be going a tad slow as soon as it's woken up. Look at computers. Whether it's booting... sleeping... hibernating.... if you expect to be able to do something without any form of lag the second either of those are recovered from, you'd be sorely mistaken.

The Atrix is fine for people who like to tinker. The only thing we can't do is overclock our processors and change ROMs every 3 seconds. Other than that I have free tethering, no ads, root, no bloatware, free webtop thanks to a hack and a pseudo-ROM/theme loaded. Yeah too bad I can't tinker with it. *eyes rolling*

NICE!!!!!! glad someone finally said something... I mean sure u can't load cyanogen but with the way things are going with these "pseudo" roms if cyanogen put some effort into making one of those for the atrix would that not be a sufficient fix??? Because lets face it doubt the BL will be unlocked soo instead of putting all that effort I to unlocking it how about taking g advantage of the capabilities that we do have.... ???? Just sayen

Haha didn't really mean to come off as a jerk but I'm just sick of reading people's posts in the ATRIX forum hating on the phone. If it's not the phone for you so what go to the forum of the device you like!
I hope to also see some cool themes/pseudo-ROMs made available. At least we have Ken right now working his butt off on GingerBlur!

yes he difinitley is i was following that thread for a bit but i saw that with the latest release i believe it was beta7 (at the time) webtop for th laptop dock was disabled and i have the LTD so that is a feature that i definitely need... do you know if its a RC yet???

i have an atrix, i guess we just have different opinions on tinkering...i do like the change roms often and be able to upgrade to the newest android version without having to wait for the manufacture. theres so much more you can do when you open up the kernel, most of the bugs that people are having would be solved if the devs can get at the kernel. Why do you think developers are leaving the Atrix? there's only so much you can do with a locked bootloader. i never said i hated the phone(i wouldnt of bought it if i did) i just dont think it's a good phone for modding but hopefully that will change...

same with mine.. the ATT version of the Atrix must be loaded with crapware making the phone slow down. My Bell version flies right out of the box, even when using Motoblur!

It's still in Beta at 7.2 now. However I believe the webtop that was removed in the previous version was the hack to make it work with just an HDMI cable so you don't need the dock to make it work. I am on 7.2 and I have the webtop hack installed and it works perfect on my TV through just the HDMI cable.

I am really enjoying the ATRIX. I was starting to get a little burnt out on installing new ROMS every couple days or weeks. This is however my first Android phone...coming from the WinMo forums...This phone is like night and day compared to my old Tilt 2.
People have such harsh and strong opinions on everything on forums. These 'reviews' should be read as objectively as possible.

Welcome Brother I'm in the same boat =P tilt 2 to atrix is an amazingly wonderful jump ~!

I came from a captivate where roms are readily available. I enjoyed flashing and it was awesome to see how a device can mature. But the kernel development is where things truly shine. But even after all the flashing I just felt like things didn't quite work right. I thought it was the fact that 99% of the roms were based off the international galaxy s.
I love my atrix. Everything works. The battery life is awesome. The phone really flies. Motoblur sucks but its been taken care of. As long as we get more roms ill be happy. Unlocked bootloader would be nice but I don't see it happening

Pretty unimpressed with my S6 (lag, lag, stutter ... )

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?

Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.

Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.

Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"

This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.

Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast

No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.

yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.

Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.

My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.

Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

Who is really missing Rooting and Roming?

I've always had an Android phone. My last was the Nexus 6p. I felt that phone, because it was stock would not need to be rooted, but I feel into that trap. Waiting for small tweaks to a stock rom that was already pretty good.
With no root for the S7 edge, I have found that I don't really care or miss it for right now. This phone easily make it through a day or more of battery. I have a Chase account, so I use Samsung pay a lot. Theming make it easy to give this phone a better than stock touch wiz look. I've always loved wireless charging.
If I have any gripes with this phone it is low speaker volume, which if we did have root I know that could be fixed. Not having the ir blaster to change the TV around the house would have been great to keep. I have two boys, 10 and 7,and they are always misplacing the remotes.
Other than that the S7 edge address a main concern with Android phones and that is battery life.

To be honest bro, I have the s7 edge at home for Verizon & I use the Nexus 6p as my daily. It's just how smooth and fast this phone is, touchwiz laggs like crazy compared to my Nexus 6p on beans rom, also I'm running my rooted apps like servicely and I get better battery life. If the s7 edge had root and unlocked bootloader no doubt it would whoop the Nexus 6p, but currently it just doesn't man.

Yea. I am really unimpressed. I haven't system updated yet, the bugs are piling on. It runs games really well. Better than every android emulator. That says a lot, but it doesn't do much for me. I really miss root. I don't like the stock ROM, it isn't bloated, it has so much potential. It feels like an alpha release 0.78.
They were close but still a lot of work to be done.

Alpha release, if you believe that you don't understand alpha, beta, and shipping releases. This is obviously a shipping release. Very few bugs.
I've never had anice emulator run games as well as a flagship. Root is/was useful when companies couldn't put their bloatware on the phones without causing all kinds of havoc on the system. Now between cutting a bunch of bloat and increasing the specs the flagship store run super well.
I'm really not sure why you would say it's an alpha release, maybe you have a bad device and should return it.

I miss root a lot, as well as tinkering around. I imagine if root doesn't happen in the next month or two I may be tempted to sell S7E. I am not loyal to any cell until it's really rootable. Options are everything.
Have their been any announcements on any teams or members working on root, or is this something people don't want to say in the event they are unsuccessful?

I'm rather enjoying using Samsung Pay at the moment. Can't say I'd want to lose that by messing with things.

Minus the 3Mint (never heard of it), I miss all of the above, in addition to Viper4Android. Man. The stock equalizer is aight, but I can't get half the power that I did out of Viper. And I never realized how many of my apps and pages had ads until I didn't have AdAway/root. I've developed, so I realize you have to make money, but most ads are most of the time inherently dangerous.

OP I am in the exact same boat as you. I had a Nexus 6P before I got the S7 Edge, and when I got it I told myself that I would keep it stock and just enjoy fast updates and smooth performance. Of course, I couldn't stay stock for more than a few days and ended up installing custom ROMs and kernels. It got to the point that every week or so I was flashing something difference. I thought this was a huge time waster, but I just couldn't stop from trying new ROMs as I always thought I could tweak something for just a bit better battery life and performance.
Now that I have the S7 Edge I do love that I keep it stock and don't waste time on those things, or spending hours on XDA. Although, I do miss the buttery smooth performance of the 6P, the S7 lags like crazy and overheats quite often.

Dead on. I wasted a few years on the nexus program. It's fun but very tedious. Now I just enjoy my games and use my device. The fiancé much enjoys me not up late at night resetting things up due to a bad flash, bug, etc.

I cannot disagree with you more. I want to remove the bloat. I want to be able to modify the edge because i keep having unintentional touches. There should be an option to disable it. I want to be able to install apks that need root. I want Adblockers. I want to fully customize it . I want so much but this phone can not deliver any.

That is what I mean. With rooting phones it becomes slightly tedious.
My wife has an iPhone and I admired how that phone just works with very few hiccups. I don't believe any phone is perfect, but I like Android better and I feel this phone is close to being perfect with a few quirks.

The honeymoon of a new and good device soon goes away. Then logic kicks in I won't be that guy who says we won't ever get root, but I don't know if I can go another month of not updating my S7E with a custom rom, not having ad blocker, and a smoother and fluid device. Call me a sellout, but there is a line between denial and reality. A lot of folks are ok and willing to hang onto S7E regardless of root - not I. I would rather better performance and less battery with root than our current situation.

But if you use the Samsung browser you CAN use AD blocker without root, as it supports it as an add in. Google it.

Terrible performance after Galaxy S8 SM-G950U One UI/Pie update

My phone performance is terrible, everything runs slow and lagging since I took the update. Phone performance was very good before. Anyone else experience this and have any ideas to bring performance back to par?

Factory reset or full wipe after updating to a new firmware. Also, do not restore Google apps, just start from a scratch.

I also have serious lag, it feels like a budget phone. I've had this phone since it launched, and installed every update without precaution. This is the first time experiencing these issues.
Frame rate is terrible, especially while scrolling. Delays in pressing buttons or launching apps have grown from milliseconds to sometimes two or three seconds. No other problems(aside from poor design choices). It feels like aggressive power throttling, not memory issues.
As soon as I saw that so much manual power management has been replaced by a "learning" system, I'm skeptical that the usual fixes will do anything for my problems, especially considering there is no other malfunction. Anyone else?

Samsung Galaxy s8 SM-G950W. Yes. Ever since the update, my Samsung is losing files., running slow and unable to use previously used apps. Substranum, fonts etc.

It's Samsung way of saying - "Buy galaxy S10"
I didn't fell any difference at all in performance.

Well, that's what I was waiting to hear. If ppl aren't universally having the issue, then a factory reset may cure the problem. I'll give it a try soon.

Yes i just got bad performance after installing pie (custom rom, so i always factory reset or it wont work) but yeah after 14 days my phone start to slowing down like old smartphone and the apps is not starting correctly (e.g i must start magisk manually or the root wont work (the app cant detect if phone is rooted even when magisk hide is off)).
I try the LightROM and ALEXIS and both have this problem (performance way worse on lightrom). I know this isnt their fault but the samsung fault (maybe because its early relase? Or...).
Note : performance is normal in the first day, but after 14-30 days the phone start to acting weirdly (the apps behave weirdly) dunno why.
Btw i use SM-G950FD

After restarting about 5 times, then manually clearing cache partition, I was able to get smooth performance. Unfortunately, I still have to restart at least once a day to prevent lagging animation. This is with light usage: streaming, facebook, email.
I turned on "reduce animations" in advanced features, and set the animation scales to 1.5 with dev options. This seems to help prolong smooth operation, but I still have to restart daily. Next step is factory reset, I have a lot to backup...

fresh install thru odin and start all over again is really good solution. at the beginning i also experiencing lag

Mine has an issue of having the fingerprint not working after it was changed. I have to do one of the following:
1. Restart and boot via safe mode then if it works, reboot again
2. Restore Settings from synced backup
3. Reset Settings
So much of a hassle.... I am thinking of rooting this soon.

My company bought Samsung J4plus on good deal from Three, has super sensitive reception, my own S8 only get EDGE or worse, J4 has 4G all over!!
anyone know if s9/S10 that good??

Had the same problem so flashed official firmware (for my carrier, downloaded from sammobile) with Odin. This part can be done without of rooting your phone.
Do this first (back up your data before as clear flash will delete everything), and test after if it works well. If not, root it (https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa...w-to/guide-root-install-twrp-samsung-t3747535) and install adaway from xda labs.
If you root the phone or install TWRP, e-fuse will break and you cannot go back after that. Warranty will be void and the Samsung fit app won't work anymore.
Fortunately, there are workarounds on a rooted phone (https://tinyurl.com/yy37gnwv) so that is not a big deal, at least for me.
Not sure when you root it if wave pay services will work so do some research first.

Has your lag subsided after time? Mine appears after a night's sleep. It never fails: Restart in the morning, smooth scrolling all day. Next morning, laggy, stuttering scrolling until I restart again. I've uninstalled all unused apps and left power mode on high performance. No change. As soon as I wake up, animation lags like a budget phone. Everything else is reliable, just not the animation.
Of course, I don't actually know what's going on, but I'm willing to bet that this new power management system that we can't control is to blame. If I have to go through all the odin, etc steps, I may just roll back to oreo. Pie is prettier, but I want my smooth operation back.

S10e gets similar reception to my A8(2018). When I got the A8 I had a S8 before that, and i don't remember there being any difference in signal. I live in poor signal area, so if a phone had bad signal, I'd probably remember because I owuldn't have any signal at all.

This is really quite unacceptable. I took the OTA update and the lagging began. I've never had an issue with an OTA update. I've never done a factory reset after an OTA update either. Flashing custom ROM is different but this is from Samsung...
Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve daily reboots or a factory reset? I just find that really inconvenient.

Yes, I agree. It's hard to know at whom who to point the finger. Google, Samsung, or both. Regardless, it's very disappointing, and hurts my impression of both companies.
I'm currently allowing the phone to run for 7 days to see if the root method listed above by robyos may be feasible for my tmo s8.
If manually restarting is the only hurdle for you, it can now be set to restart automatically (I guess they anticipated this?) Settings > device care > three dots > auto restart.
It feels like a duct-tape band-aid, but it's there. After my 7 day test, I'll probably give this auto-restart a try. However, I'm concerned about the terribly annoying tmo jingle at each restart.

I'm thinking the problem may be googles not Samsung's...I had a OnePlus 5 for almost 2 years. At some point after the pie update it would stutter while scrolling or during animations intermittently. Even a factory reset didn't fix it. The phone was still fast but it was aesthetically annoying seeing the stuttering.
I drown the phone in the ocean on vacation this month and had to replace it so I got a used s8. I haven't had the same issue with scrolling but I've only had it for a couple weeks so far on a fresh wipe. It had some "normal" Samsung lag that the OnePlus didn't have while opening apps and it doesn't keep nearly as much in memory (4gb vs 8 GB RAM). But I'm still thinking the problem may be with pie itself since people were complaining about stuttering on both Samsung and OnePlus phones.
Hopefully my s8 is not affected and it's only certain ones experience it.

Wow! It's sad to hear an 8gb phone would still have the same issue. I wonder if this has to do with power management. Perhaps it's squeezing a tiny percentage of battery life out of saving some frames. It drives me crazy and gives me a headache. I wish they'd provide a simple switch for whatever this is.
This os feels like they ventured into breaking what works in an endless quest to fix what wasn't broken. Perhaps some team of programmers is celebrating minute improvements, but it's coming at the expense of the consumer, who never signed up to be the guinea pig. Each update seems to remove or break basic reliability and functionality that we paid for. I feel like I paid a premium price to become a software tester.

So reboots don't seem to fix the lag I'm experiencing when opening and closing certain apps. This phone was plenty fast before for me. Other issues are present now too. Auto adaptive display brightness doesn't work as well. I also really think it's sheet that you can't disable GPS and have the battery saving mode anymore! WTF Samsung.
